Where will I study?

This full-time course will be taught three days per week over one year at your local centre. You can also study on a part-time basis over two years.

What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Potential students should have attained one relevant Higher (at a C pass or above) or have achieved a 12 credit NC qualification in a relevant subject such as Digital Media Computing. Mature students will be considered based upon interview and relevant work experience.

Will I receive a recognised qualification? Yes, upon completing the course you will receive a recognised qualification at Higher National Certificate level.

How can I continue to develop my skills? After successfully completing the course you will be able to progress to HND Computing or apply for direct entry to year two of a BSc Computing degree programme.

Or you may be a more mature student looking to change career direction and return to study. HNC Computing is one of the SQA’s longest established and most popular Higher National awards.


Reflecting recent computing development and trends, this course will help you develop and hone transferable skills which will have an immediate application in both the workplace and further education. The course will introduce the following mandatory units: • Computer System Fundamentals • Developing Software – An Introduction • Professionalism and Ethics in Computing • Team Working in Computing • Troubleshooting Computing Problems • HNC Computing - Graded Unit 1

You will also be able study further in a range of optional units which may interest you specifically including: Database Design Fundamentals, SQL – An Introduction, Multi User Operating Systems, An introduction to Project Management, E-Commerce – Publishing Web Sites and An Introduction to Systems Development.
