Where will I study?
This full-time course will be taught at your local centre.
What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course? Potential students require no specific qualifications for this course. Students should, however, have communication, problem solving and working with others, numeracy and ICT skills at SCQF Level 3 or above. All students will be expected to have a keen interest in horticulture and land-based industries.
Will I receive a recognised qualification? Yes, upon completing the course you will achieve an SCQF credit at Level 5.
How can I continue to develop my skills? After successfully completing the course you will be able to progress to further Higher National awards in Horticulture.
Why should I consider an NC Horticulture course? Do you want to learn the basic practical skills involved in horticultural practice? Do you want to enhance your employability skills and career prospects with a qualification that will cover not only practical skills but also the theory surrounding the many topic areas of horticultural practice? Do you want to work towards a qualification which will enable you to study further at Higher National level? If yes, then this course may well be the right course for you. You may be a school leaver looking to study for a future career. You could already be working within landbased industries but looking to improve your skills. Or you may be a more mature student wishing to change career direction and return to study. The course will help you develop a wide and increasing knowledge of the theoretical skills involved in horticultural practice and gain confidence and practical experience in a range of horticultural tasks. You will also be given the opportunity to experience and explore the very diverse areas which exist within landbased industries.
The course will introduce the following areas: • Soils and growing media • Plant identification • Plant husbandry – common disorders • Basic botany • Planting and maintenance • Horticultural machinery – operation and maintenance • Plant nutrition • Plant production from seed • Garden design • Home and allotment gardening • Drystone dykes – building and repairing • Soft landscaping – general plantings • Vegetative propagation
