Why should I consider a Working in the Community course? Are you looking to follow a career in community or youth work? Do you want to develop and hone your organisational, planning and interpersonal skills in a practical group based environment? Do you want to improve your employment prospects through a practical and thorough understanding of the diverse areas encountered in the planning and execution of a group based community project? If yes, then this course may well be the right course for you. You may be a school leaver looking to study for a future career. Or you may be a more mature student wishing to change career direction and return to study. Taught as a short full-time course over 15 weeks, this course will allow you to experience the different areas encountered in a community based project and acquire the skills needed to create an environment that enables effective group working. The course will be highly practical in nature and will provide the opportunity for the students to experience and develop both interpersonal and communications skills.


The course will introduce the following areas: •

Self awareness

Self in society

Self and work

Practical abilities

Enterprise activity

Customer care skills

Preparing for employment

Communications

Using a keyboard

Information technology

Building employability skills

Dealing with work situations

First aid

Manual handling

Students who successfully complete the course will achieve three group awards in Personal Development, Enterprise and Employability and Employability.


Where will I study?

The short full-time course will be taught at your local centre. The course will be delivered three days per week for 15 weeks.

What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course?

Potential students require no specific qualifications for this course. All students will be interviewed individually by the course tutor.

How can I continue to develop my skills? A natural next step for those students who wish to build upon and develop their skills is the SVQ2 Youth Work course. This course will explore and develop the knowledge, organisational and planning skills required not only to meet the needs of young people in a variety of situations but also to ensure the effective operation of youth based groups.
