UNKNOWN CURIOSITY The story begins with a Chinese stranger decided to explore Garibong because of mix of curiosity and familiarity. The more she explores, the more she feels alienated due to the tension built up from her disconnection with the local people. In the end, in contrast to what she thought initially, she felt more comfortable after speaking to a friendly local guy. However, he instead might have completely opposite thinking. From this story board, what we’re able to learned from is the question Is it responsible to base your judgement on linear observation without interaction? We should keep an open mind when approaching certain things as there might have been more layers to explore. The world is a dynamic and diverse environment. We don’t know what we don’t know.

THE OPEN LOOP The quiet neighbourhood of Garibong is more than what meets the eye. This documentary explores the impact of the influx of Chinese immigrants on the locals, how the daily life of the residents succeeds in holding true to its authentic roots whilst the Chinese immigrants adds to the richness of the community.

NARRATION- MIRROR
MIRROR The movie has a narrative that views from the perspective (eyes) of the people of Garibong. The main themes of this film are the transition between fear, fragility and contentment. It begins with the view of these colored-beings that appear in Garibong while the locals were just having fun with the ‘Gachapon’ machine. The mood changed as soon as these beings appear and the people seemed discomforted. A series of these interchanging views of the beings as purely colored to slightly humanized portray the altering response of Garibong’s people towards strangers. The two main highlights of the film is the paradox that exist in the social structure of Garibong and the repercussive effect that negligent decisions cause in the society. 'Not enough parks meant that elderlies are begin hanging around the streets or in front of stores'. The Korean Chinese shop owner felt that the place was chaotic because of the drunken Chinese at night are always fighting. The main reason for her to come to Korea was to make money. To her, it is a lot easier to make it in Korea than China. Because she spends all her time running the shop, she barely has any time to care about the social construct of the area.

He's the owner of a small store and 4-5 houses in Garibong. He saw the history changing in the town. He says at the past there were many Chosun people, but now there's increasing number of the Chinese from the mainland. He's finding it difficult to communicate with them. Because he owns several houses, he wants Garibong to be reconstructed by huge companies, although he supports the left wing political parties. He thinks it's also good for people living in Bul-jip(Bee hive), as he believes their quality of lives will be improved.

The girl, Chinese Korean from Changchun, she has only been to korea for 1 year, works at the kts telecom company in garibongdong. She lives in Korea with her mum who takes any job she can find. Due to the fact that she has only been to Korea for 1 year, she feels that she has no say in the future development of the area nor does she really care about what's going to happen. However, she does feel that the area is chaotic and she can't connect with anyone on an emotional level and that is because she feels Korea isn't her home.

MR HYUN JI PIUK PRIEST I was sent here (Garibong) by my superior to be an assistant to the current priest of the Catholic church. We are actually developing a program right in the centre of Garibong where we teach school children the Korean language, rules and culture that is located in a small apartment. We intend to assimilate the Chinese society into the Korean culture through these educational methods – not only through our religion as a Catholic. We try to discourage negative assumptions of the Chinese society by the Koreans and also create awareness in being open to foreigners as being similar human beings (in reference to the Korean stabbing case in Garibong). Koreans and Korean-Chinese have been moving out of Garibong due to the large immigration of the Chinese into this area – statistically roughly from 80% Koreans to currently only 30% remaining. I believe Garibong has a lot of potential due to its diversity and require gradual change – little by little – not too quickly if not it will turn bad for the people who lives there.

I just only moved here from China 3 months ago. I came here to help my son babysit his kids while looking after his grocery store in Garibong. I do not really feel anything wrong with Garibong as I do not spend enough time out in the streets to actually have a connection with the locals here. I think I will be staying in Garibong for a long time as I wish to be closer to my family and there is no point for me to return back to China. There are not much jobs in China and this is a good opportunity for my son and family as they are able to own their business here in Korea.

I have been in Garibong for almost 13 years now. I feel that our people (China Chinese) do not really care about the change that will happen. Even if I had an opinion, I do not think it would matter as they (the officials) would just ignore it. The streets are horrible, definitely needs change in that part. Apart from that, I think Garibong is a very safe place. I lived here for a long time and I had never felt threatened before. A lot of our people (China Chinese) come and go very often so we do not really have the power as a community to have a say.

By coming here, he thought he would have higher income so that he could send more money to his family back in China due to the exchange rate between Yuan and Won. However, in the year when he arrived South Korea, the Won currency was dropping drastically which mean his initial intention coming to Garibong was shattered. Unfortunately, he couldn’t go back to China anymore as he has sold his shop and house there.

A 16 year old boy who lives in Guro which has just moved from Harbin, China roughly 1month ago. Although he is Jooseun(Korean Chinese), he is unable to speak in Korean but only English and Chinese, although he is currently learning the Korean Language from a language School so that he could be admitted to one of the Korean University. He lives with his mother and his uncle who owns the place they live in. When asked about how he feels about Garibong and whether he would stay here for a long time , he felt that he belong here and that the conditions here were really good, in comparison to where he was at before and he would love to stay for the future. If there could be improvements, it is also welcomed. He was involved in a local Community Centre nearby where he goes around helping to pick up rubbishes on the streets.

Paths of flickering floor lights that lead locals and outsiders of Garibong Dong to a communal space. The space consists greens, seating, and the beacon of hope. The beacon of hope is an installation, a tall light pillar where all the ends of the light paths gather. Its function is to illuminate the space and its purpose is to symbolize hope.
