SUSHI PLEASE!

International Sushi Day Is June 18, 2023

We encouraged our readers to enjoy a nice Prime Rib dinner at a casino in April’s issue (since April was National Prime Rib Month) and we immediately received tons of suggestions, opinions, and personal experiences through emails and online messages. All the awesome feedback from our fans prompted my team and I to start another reader poll in the May issue which casino has the best hamburger? Because, as you might have guessed, May was National Hamburger Month. Well, now I’m calling all Sushi lovers for this month’s challenge because it’s International Sushi Day on June 18. We can’t wait for you to tell us which casino serves up your favorite little scrumptious seaweed-wrapped fish delights.

From Michelin-starred restaurants to the grocery store shelves, sushi is everywhere. It’s not hard to find a decent roll, but the history and trivia behind the marriage of rice and fish are a mystery to most. Contrary to what many people think, it is a Chinese creation that was made popular in Japan. Another fun fact: the heat of real wasabi comes form the antimicrobial chemicals present in the plant and was used in sushi to kill any parasites and microbes in raw fish. Today, fish is flash-frozen, ruling out the fear of parasites. So, don’t be afraid when I tell you that some restaurants use fake wasabi which is just a blend of horseradish and mustard with green food coloring.

My team and I are so grateful to all of you for your correspondences. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us. As we compile all the results based on your suggestions, we will announce the final casino winners in all categories in an upcoming issue.

PLAYERS NOT HAVING MUCH LUCK LATELY

Losing Interest, Spending Less Money, And Feeling Cheated

Q: These “new” slots nowadays seem so different than the slots from a few years ago! They are so much harder to win anything on. I used to put in $20 at a time and now I have to put in $100 at a time. You can hit the button ten times and not get anything. I wanted to know, who checks these slots and who oversees the casinos to make sure everything is fair? Are the Indian casinos here in Arizona monitored like the ones in Vegas?

A: Judy, both the commercial and tribal casinos are heavily regulated and closely monitored by several state and national agencies. There are actually three distinct regulatory levels for all tribal gaming operations. First, tribal governments regulate gaming on their reservations with their own commissions. Second, tribes that have compacts with the state (like Arizona does) are regulated by state government agencies (like the Arizona Department of Gaming ADG). Finally, the National Indian Gaming Commission and Federal Government agencies such as the U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. Treasury Department, and the Department of the Interior, also play significant roles in the oversight of tribal gaming. Then, of course, there are also agencies like the FBI, IRS, the U.S. Attorneys, U.S. Marshalls, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs; all of whom have some level of regulatory involvement.

The ADG Machine Compliance Technicians randomly inspect gaming devices at all of Arizona’s casinos on a regular basis. Their visits are unannounced and they are usually able to do spot checks at 8 to 10 casinos every month! The ADG technicians announce their visit to the Tribal Gaming Office first and then a Tribal Gaming Agent, a Casino Slot Technician, and a Casino Security Officer accompany the Machine Compliance Technicians around the casino during the inspection. A typical spot check may consist of up to 50 different slot games. While there, the ADG technicians open the slots, enter the setup menus and verify the percentages and the software. Then, they perform communication tests with the accounting system and run bills and tickets through the acceptors. They also make sure to check that all the accounting meters (credits in, credits out, credits played, etc.) are working correctly.

Q: I was putting a $100 bill in a slot machine and 5 minutes t outrageous, usually in the $2 to $3 range. I was bringing several hundreds of dollars for each casino trip and I was going once a week or once every s my luck or if the casinos have done something and changed their slot games because

A: Mia, thank you very much for your comment and for being our reader. We appreciate you very much. We’re so happy that you are enjoying the game of Blackjack. With a house edge at 2%, and even lower using basic strategy, it’s a game that will definitely give you some play time without putting a dent in your wallet. And, did you know that a player will get dealt a Blackjack hand of 21 about once in every 21 hands (a very cool coincidence)? Have fun playing Blackjack and good luck!

Q: The companies that make the slots need to stop making them so ridiculous or people are going to seriously lose interest and stop going to the casinos! It’s insane how difficult it is to win now. Nobody wants to just be beaten over the head.

A: Tina, we wholeheartedly agree! The volatility is absurd! $

VIDEO POKER CORNER

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How To Play Those Tricky Hands

Video poker is the best slot game to play on the casino floor. Period. With returns of over 100%, when playing perfect strategy on some games, it’s amazing to me that more people don’t play this great video slot. However, making poor holds can decimate your bankroll and bring that payback percentage down by 10-25%, easily.

Playing optimum strategy on every hand, and on every video poker game, plus knowing the changes to the strategy between a one-line, multi-line or specialty game, is not easy. We’ve all been there pondering two or more potential holds staring us in the face on the deal. How many times have you said or heard someone else at the casino say, “Hmm, what should I hold in this situation?”

Well, if you want to be one step closer to becoming an expert video poker player then let’s take a closer look at some of those sticky situations and make sure you are using perfect strategy (and not hunches) on all those holds. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

Should I hold the kicker when I’m playing Triple Double Bonus Poker if I’m dealt three Aces and a 2, 3, or 4?

Yes! A resounding yes! The long term mathematical advantage, the return to player (RTP), is much higher when the kicker is held. Most people want two chances to get an Ace back on the draw, which is why they discard the kicker. However, this is the worst video poker mistake to make. Always make sure to hold a kicker card with any three dealt twos, threes and fours as well when playing Triple Double Bonus Poker.

Do I have to hold the kickers when playing Double Bonus or Double Double Bonus Poker?

No! Only hold the three-of-a-kinds in these games. The reason that the kicker is held in Triple Double Bonus and not these poker games is because the four-of-a-kinds are bonused. For example, in Triple Double Bonus Poker, the four Aces with a kicker pays the exact same win as the Royal Flush!

Why do I feel like I’m discarding all five cards frequently when I’m playing Deuces Wild?

Because you are! Using basic strategy, you will be discarding all five cards almost 20% of the time, so be aware and try not to get frustrated. Just know that discarding all five cards will yield wins over 6% of the time!

What do I hold if I m dealt a wild Royal Flush with three deuces or a five

Hold the wild Royal Flush and hold the five kind. Yes, it may be very tempting to go for the four deuces, but it s a losing play in the long run. Especially, when you are playing a deuces game that bonuses certain five-of-a-kinds.

If I’m playing a straight up video poker game like Jacks or Better and I’m dealt a four card flush with three cards to the Royal, what do I hold?

The correct play, with the highest expected value, is to hold for the Royal Flush.

If I’m dealt a full house of three Aces and a pair, do I hold the full house if I’m playing Triple Double Bonus Poker? No. Drop the full house and only hold the three Aces (and one kicker if dealt a two, three or four). Make sure to hold all other dealt full houses. Furthermore, never hold two dealt pairs if one of the pairs are Aces. Hold just the Aces and drop the other pair. Hold all other dealt pairs.

If I’m playing Ultimate X, and I’m dealt a straight or a flush with three high cards to the Royal, do I hold the three high cards or do I hold the straight or flush for the big multipliers on the following hand?

This is a difficult and complex question with many answers which depend on the dealt hand. However, in most situations, you want to play for the multipliers, so you would hold these dealt hands. $

EVEN AGENT 007 HAD A FAVORITE GAME

Here’s Why James Bond Chose This Popular Game Over All The Others

Ian Fleming’s James Bond character was as stone-cold cool as any secret agent could be. A British Secret Intelligence Service member with a code name of 007. And although the author initially thought he would write a dull character who just haphazardly traipsed into intrigue, Bond surprised him. He morphed into our culture as austere and sophisticated. He liked his martinis shaken, not stirred. And his preferred game of choice, baccarat, was high-stakes and prestigious.

Bond played (and profited handsomely while playing) baccarat in no less than six of the 007 movies made. In fact, the 1971 film Diamonds are Forever is set in Las Vegas, which gives viewers a picture of Sin City from long ago that’s hard to believe.

Although the form of baccarat Bond excelled at the most was chemin-de-fer, where a single player posts a maximum bank the other players wager into, the game was similar to what we play in Arizona. To compensate for a house-banked game, Arizona baccarat takes away the individual Player-Banker options to stand or hit that Chemmy offers and uses a standardized set of rules just as blackjack does, such as dealer must hit until hard 17 or better is achieved.

That’s my long-winded way of saying baccarat is still a cool gamble. And, like 007, you can play the game effortlessly while enjoying a shallow house edge like blackjack and craps.

The Best Things About Baccarat

Although several forms of baccarat are still offered across the globe and in Arizona, mini or EZ bac is now the standard game where the dealer handles the cards, hits the Banker, and Player two-card draws according to set rules. There is no 5% commission like the larger table game offered.

So, you can take it easy, choose Player or Banker, and enjoy the game while the dealer does all the work. Just avoid regularly wagering on the Tie, Panda 8, and Dragon 7 bets because the house edge runs over 7% on each.

The best thing about baccarat is the nearly breakeven odds, but EZ bac also offers a speedy game like blackjack. On average, you’ll get 70 hands each hour. Unlike Let-it-Ride or WPT, where you’ll only see about 50 hands.

Because of the 3 to 2 payoff for blackjacks and optional double down and splitting, a player at blackjack only wins about 42.5%

of their hands and pushes 8.5%. That means the house wins about 49%.

However, you’ll see some serious streaks at EZ bac since the odds of either the Player or Banker’s hand winning are so close. For those of you who love to increase your wagers and follow streaks, check out how blackjack and baccarat streaks compare.

Blackjack Player Streak Odds Baccarat Player/Banker Streak Odds

A streak of two wins = 22.5% A streak of two wins = 25%

A streak of three wins = 10.6% A streak of three wins is= 12.5%

A streak of four wins = 5% A streak of four wins = 6.25%

A streak of five wins = 2.4% A streak of five wins = 3.125%

A streak of six wins = 1.1% A streak of six wins = 1.56%

Remember, each wager is independent of the last. All streaks go both ways at some points, so don’t double up trying to get even!

A SIMPLE CARD COUNTING SYSTEM

That Offers A Straightforward Way To Extend Your Play Session

Many Blackjack players attempt to learn to count cards only to get discouraged because of the (perceived) complexity of the system. You have to assign a plus or minus value to each card, get a running count of the cards you have seen, and divide that number by the decks left to be played. Then you must use that number to determine how to play the hand you are dealt and also decide on how much to wager on the upcoming hand.

Most players lose track of the count in a casino situation and find it’s too difficult to play the hands accurately. Rest assured, I have good news for you future card counters. This method will give you a slight advantage over the casino and, if you play the hands correctly, you may even come out ahead in the long run.

How The System Works

The first step is to make sure you know basic strategy perfectly. Make yourself some flash cards like you used in grade school to ensure you are playing flawlessly. Practice before you go to the casino so you don’t make any mistakes.

This system uses an unbalanced count. With most counting systems, such as the Hi-Lo system, you have a count of 0 when you get to the end of the deck. However, with this system (if you were counting a single deck game) you will be at a count of 4 at the end of the deck. The value you use for the cards is listed below. Make sure to practice counting a single deck until you can do it in about thirty seconds. You should always end up at 4 if you did an accurate count.

cards 2-7 count: +1

cards 8-9 count: 0

cards 10-Ace count: -1

You count the cards in pairs. For example, player one is dealt a pair of twos, so your count is +2, the second player is dealt a two and a ten (+1 and –1) which cancel each other out and make your count still +2, and so on. You count the dealer’s up card last and then you count the hit cards. Always do it in the same order so you don’t get confused. During your count, use basic strategy to play the hands.

At a count of +1 or less you bet the minimum, at a count of +2 the deck is in your favor so you start to increase your bet. The

higher the count, the better for the player. So, you increase your bet as the count rises. Just don’t go crazy increasing your bet sizes because that’s how the casinos identify card counters. At a count of +3 or higher, make sure you always take insurance. Yes, this is normally a bad bet, but when you’re counting cards it’s worth it.

The main reason this count is so effective is because, as your count rises, there are more tens and Aces which increase the probability of getting a Blackjack. I know what you’re thinking; if the player is more likely to get a Blackjack, isn’t the dealer more likely to get one as well? The answer is yes, but you get paid 3 to 2 if you get one while he/she doesn’t. With this count, you will know when the deck favors the player.

This system is definitely not as complex as other systems so the new player is not as likely to make mistakes. Just remember, when increasing your bet size do it gradually so you don’t attract attention! I have been banned from casinos and it’s not much fun to get the tap on the shoulder.

Prescott Frontier Days Near Bucky’s Casino June 28—July 4

There is no better way to spend a summer evening than at the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Since 1888, Prescott Frontier Days Inc. has presented the annual World’s Oldest Rodeo at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. This year, the rodeo will take place on Wednesday, June 28 through Tuesday, July 4. Join them to see your favorite events, including steer wrestling, bareback riding, tie-down roping, women’s breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, women’s barrel racing, bull riding and a whole lot more great entertainment!

July 4, 1888, became the birthday of the professional rodeo when a group of Prescott, Arizona, merchants and professional businessmen organized the first formalized “cowboy tournament” and offered cash prizes. “Cowboy Contests” continued and were planned, promoted and carried out by a committee of local merchants. From then on, rodeo has grown into a multimillion dollar enterprise with more than 700 professional rodeos in 50 states.

Prescott Frontier Days, Inc., is an organization of people of all ages from the Prescott area. They give their time and talents, as volunteers, to put on a number of events each year. There are currently over 200 active members and during the peak period, around the 4th of July, that number swells with an additional 800 volunteers, who typically stage a Golf Tournament, the Prescott Frontier Days, Inc. Rodeo Parade, an Old Timers Gathering, and of course, the 8 performances of the “World’s Oldest Rodeo.”

Don Felder

Hon-Dah’s Festival Grounds July 1

Don Felder is set to take the stage at Hon-Dah’s festival grounds at 8 p.m. (gates open at 7 p.m.) on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Tickets can be purchased at the gift shop. Or you can call 1-928-369-7577 for more information.

Don Felder is renowned as the former lead guitarist of The Eagles, one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time. “Fingers,” as Felder is known, is a true American rock and roll guitar hero and one of the most innovative riff-generating songwriters of the modern rock era.

The “Fingers” nickname is well-warranted, as anyone who has ever watched the man’s hands blaze across whatever guitar fretboard can readily attest whether it be acoustic or electric, single-neck or double-neck. In fact, the inherent prowess of those dexterous digits helped Felder navigate the burgeoning rock scene in his native Gainesville, Florida, while he was growing up there in the 1960s. That formative time included a stint teaching guitar to a young sandyhaired Southern gentleman by the name of Tom Petty. “Who knew he would become such a rock music icon?” Felder muses. “I was so proud to see Tom become as popular and influential as he did.”

Spending more and more time on the road as the front man of his own tight-knit solo band made Felder realize he needed to put in the time to hone his own distinctive voice into a finely tuned instrument. “That’s just how I work,” says Felder. “A lead vocal has to fit the song it has to fit the timbre and texture of the song. Otherwise, you’re a onenote samba.” $

MY TOP 7 CASINO GRIPES

And Losing Isn’t One Of Them

Whenever I visit a casino, I go prepared to win! Call me an eternal optimist! Don’t get me wrong, I accept that gambling is a form of entertainment, so the amount of money I take with me to a casino is what I feel I can afford to part with. However, if lady luck happens to not come my way then of course I’m disappointed, but that’s gambling.

I believe it’s just silly to expect to win at the casino ALL the time. I have my ups and downs and if one casino visit isn’t the greatest then I look forward to my next visit in the hopes that my luck will change for the better. Therefore, not winning at the casino every single time I go is not one of my gripes. I do, however, have several other complaints which detract from my overall casino entertainment experience. And, some of them really piss me off.

1. Sitting next to people at a casino that are whining and grumbling about losing is completely annoying. The huffing, the puffing, the protesting, and the criticizing isn’t a whole heck of a lot of fun. In fact, I’ve found that these kind of party poopers actually carry a contagious negative attitude that spreads like spilled water.

If it’s not going well at a machine, then just change machines! If it’s not going well in general, leave! The casino is not going to close before you have a chance to visit again.

2. On the flip side, I can’t stand the overly excited hyperfreakazoids either. You know the kind that yell like they’ve just won a million dollar lottery every time they get a win even if it’s just for a couple of dollars. I relish the energy and the excitement of the casino. However, sitting next to this type of person (or worse yet, a group of friends standing around all screaming in unison) is pure torment!

There’s nothing wrong with having fun at the casino, but please be respectful of those around you. Would you like to have someone screaming in your ear for an extended period of time?

3. Most casinos in Arizona have gone completely smoke-free. However, there are a few that still have smoking sections or allow smoking in the bar areas. And, although most smokers are extremely respectful, there are also incredibly obnoxious and inconsiderate smokers as well who decide that blowing smoke in other people’s faces, scattering ash on top of them-

selves, on top of others sitting next to them, on the slot machines and all around is okay. Well, it’s not okay.

Be aware of the direction the smoke is traveling and, for Pete’s sake, use the ashtrays that are provided.

4. Which casino visitor isn’t as bothered as I am by those niggling, pesky hoverers? The quiet lurkers are annoying because you just feel their presence, but the blustering oglers that interject maddening comments like “ooh, that was close” and “aah, what an awful bonus” are downright infuriating. As if I need my very own play-by-play commentator!

If you’re a hoverer, stop it! Go get your own machine, sit down, play, and have fun. Stop standing around and join in on the action!

5. I’m playing my favorite video slot machine, I get into the bonus, and all of a sudden the lady next to me decides she wants to strike up a conversation. Not the most opportune time! I consider myself a “people person.” I love meeting new people and I love socializing. But, when I’m in front of my favorite video slot machine, or trying to focus on using optimal strategy at the blackjack table, it’s a little difficult to carry on a conversation.

If you want to talk to the stranger sitting next to you at the casino, make sure your timing is convenient and appropriate.

6. Another annoying action people do, that seems to have gotten worse since the pandemic, is to hit and smack the machine buttons very loudly. It’s baffling to me how it doesn’t hurt them after a while?

If you’re angry to the point you’ve become aggressive, and potentially violent, it’s time to walk away. Cursing and abusing a slot machine can only bring more harm to yourself and others.

7. I want to be treated with kindness and gratitude by all the employees at the casino from cocktail waitresses to the slot attendants to the blackjack dealers to the security officers and everyone in between. I have two dozen casinos to choose from in Arizona alone and I chose to come play at your casino.

A casino is a business, just like any other business, and you are the customer. So, if you’re not satisfied with the level of service you’re receiving, don’t continue to provide them with your patronage. $
