ARKANSAS HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION

ARKANSAS HOSPITALS MAGAZINE . 33

ARK ANSAS HOSPITAL S 2019 BY THE NUMBERS 105

Hospitals of all types are located in cities, towns, and communities throughout Arkansas.

102

Hospitals and other health care organizations are members of the Arkansas Hospital Association.

43

Community hospitals have fewer than 100 beds.

28

Hospitals are designated by the federal government as Critical Access Hospitals, having no more than 25 acute care beds.

39

Counties are served by a single hospital. Eighteen of those counties are served by a single Critical Access Hospital.

38

Counties in the state count hospitals among their top five employers. In 22 counties, a hospital is among the top three employers.

25

Arkansas counties and cities believe their hospitals to be important enough that people in those areas have voted to provide local tax support for the hospital.

23

Arkansas counties – more than 30 percent of all counties in the state – do not have a local community hospital.

61% 56

Of AHA member hospitals are charitable, not-for-profit organizations, while 28 percent of the hospitals are operated by private, for-profit companies, and 14 percent are public hospitals – owned and operated by a city, county, state, or federal government. AHA members are designated Trauma Centers within the comprehensive, statewide trauma system, which has been credited with cutting the rate of preventable deaths due to injuries by 50 percent.

17,840

Arkansans sought inpatient or outpatient care from the state’s hospitals each day in 2017*, on average, for illnesses, injuries, and other conditions that required medical attention.

35,517

Newborns were delivered in Arkansas hospitals in 2017. The Arkansas Medicaid program covered almost 65 percent of them.

Source: Self-reported information provided to the Arkansas Hospital Association. *A 2% sales tax was approved in 2004/2005 to build the hospital building. Due to refinancing, a portion of that 2% now goes to support other city bulidings. Another refinancing in 2013 allowed some savings to be allocated to maintenance and equipment for the hospital for a 5-year period. The portion for maintenance will sunset in 2020 (approved for 5 years). NA=Information not available
