Top Strategies to Erode Toxic Behaviors and Build Teams of Everyday Civility in Healthcare ACHE 3-Hour Workshop Mitchell Kusy, PhD Professor, Graduate School of Leadership and Change, Antioch University; Organizational Psychologist; Fulbright Scholar in Organizational Development
Uncivil, toxic behaviors are more rampant and deleterious than most think. In his national study, Dr. Kusy discovered that a whopping 94% of leaders work with a toxic individual. Worse yet, 51% of professionals working with toxic people reported an increase in patient errors, 57.6% a decrease in critical thinking, and 75% noting that these errors could have been avoided. Who are these individuals and why do they get away with such bad behaviors? In this session, you will discover both the systems that enable such behaviors to continue and the powerful strategies to stop these behaviors in their tracks. This session will explore what toxic behaviors look like and their impact to three arenas: our personal well-being, team performance, and the patient experience. Some say: “Why not just fire the toxic person?” These people are clever chameleons who are gifted at “kissing up” to those with perceived power and “knocking down” to others — thus disguising the impact of their behaviors on critical decision-makers.

Friday, June 17 Attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of what makes these people “tick,” the immediate actions leaders need to take, and the long-term strategies to address the systems that enable people to get away with bad behavior. It’s not about being “nice.” Rather, it’s about respect as a key driver of individual performance, patient safety, and team effectiveness. This workshop is presented locally by the Arkansas Hospital Association and the Arkansas Health Executives Forum. The American College of Healthcare Executives has awarded 3 Face-to-Face Education credit hours to this program. To receive credit, participants’ names and signatures must appear on the sign-in sheet.
All registered hospital attendees will receive a copy of Dr. Kusy’s book Why I Don’t Work Here Anymore.
