MEET THE TEAM Hello Style readers!

EDITORIAL COORDINATOR

Welcome to our October edition. This month, we talk to Steve Claydon, entrepreneur and super sales trainer about the effect COVID-19 has had, not only on his own business, but our local ones as well. Let’s be honest, this year has been a shocker. But as restrictions lift and people are out and about again (with 1.5metres between us), we, just like Steve, are looking forward to a bigger and better future for local business. Though celebrations might look a little different this year, we are saying yes to Oktoberfest! Style is looking forward to hitting a local brewery, not to mention having a go at the home-made Kartoffelknödel (find the recipe on page 23). October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in this edition Style writer Katherine Sampson talks to June Warry, a cosmetic tattooist who helps breast cancer survivors who have had a mastectomy feel feminine again. Read her story on page 18. And as we begin the final stretch of 2020, Style looks to the future in our education feature (page 40). See what our schools have to offer as they shape our leaders of tomorrow. We hope you enjoy our October edition of Style Magazine.

2020 has seen many local businesses living in limbo, keeping their heads above water and waiting for a return to ‘normal’ or at least a bit closer to it. But what if riding those waves of change could initiate innovation and partnerships, making them stronger than ever? Steve Claydon thinks it can. By JOSIE ADAMS

E

ntrepreneur, author, motivator and the architect of a flawless sales strategy, the Toowoombabased business consultant, proud husband and father of two, has seen his fair share of challenge in 2020. Steve’s not going to sugar-coat it. He admits it’s been painful. The previous couple of years, Steve and his business partner, Darcy J Smyth, developed an immersive training event where personal and professional learnings were developed through playing a highly strategic game, described as a sales-type Survivor. The Sales Game was set to make their business Why Bravo a success. “2020 was set to be the biggest year for us ever. We had managed to crack the US market and had a bunch of opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and the US already booked into the calendar,” Steve said. “We were to fly out to New Zealand the next day. Then we got a message saying the airports were closed. “From there it was a downhill mess,” he said. “We went from doing over 100 flights a year to now, zero. Our focus was always on face-to-face consultation and experiential learning. Our business model was essentially void.”

6 TOOWOOMBA STYLE | OCTOBER 2020

In a state of shock, Steve said he knew the only option was to put The Sales Game on a virtual platform. “We honestly thought that it was impossible to run virtually,” he says. “But that’s the one thing that I think COVID-19 has taught us more than anything. We need to be really careful about what we think is impossible. “We have now been able to open the business up to entirely new locations, with clients joining us from the UK, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, India, even Belarus. Look, if someone had told me that this is what our business would look like in 2020, I would say they were joking. But you’ve got to roll with it.”

And if the ability to innovate through these changes is the key, it’s a relief to know some things have stayed the same. In business, Steve said the psychology of selling has essentially stayed the same. At its very foundation, it’s about solving problems. “Humans have always had problems and we will continue to have problems. But has the pandemic changed those problems? Yes. Absolutely. We talk about a new world; a new normal. So, let’s think about the new problems. And that’s where future industry and business are going to come from – solving our new problems.” In saying that, though, he admits the

days of the hard sell are probably over, as consumers reprioritise what they consider as value. “Perhaps previously it was all about business. But I think ultimately, consumers have a more holistic approach when it comes to looking at businesses they want to deal with. “It’s not just about the product or the solution or even the service anymore. The curtain seems to be opening, and I think consumers will respond positively to sharing stories behind businesses.” Local, face-to-face small businesses may just have the upper hand too. When discussing post-pandemic consumer trends, it’s not only the business’s back

story. Patriotism and customisation are also the rise. “We care more about how things are made, where things are grown. We don’t just want to be a single buyer; we want to be a collective buyer and to be a part of a community, part of something that’s bigger than ourselves.” But with a recession declared and unemployment in Queensland reaching 8.8 per cent in July, how can local consumers support the small and local businesses they love when money is so tight? “The way I think about value and sharing value is in three areas:

knowledge, network and capital,” Steve said. “And while you may not be able to support your local business right now with capital, you can support them by sharing your network, or sharing your insights, experiences or knowledge. “You know there is so much power in being a buyer right now. And I think businesses would love to know what they can do better.” Those values can also be used business to business, which ultimately may be the difference between boom or bust in the current economic climate. “From a tactical perspective, I think

one of the most important things for small local business is to look at strategic partnerships. There’s an opportunity for businesses to work collaboratively and complement each other and this goes for not only sharing knowledge and sharing networks, but also it could potentially relieve the problem of capital that many businesses are struggling with right now. “I like to think that COVID-19 has put a lot of businesses in hospital. You know, you might have had a great business previously. Now, through no fault of your own, you’re in hospital and things aren’t great. It’s a long road to recovery. “Then you look around and you realise

how many other businesses are in hospital. So, then it becomes more like ‘okay, so how do we all get out and start again? How can we support each other and grow stronger?’ “And I truly hope that this is what will happen to local business. That eventually it comes back stronger than ever.” Steve Claydon is the author of several books including The Opposite Effect, The Project Principle, The Future of Selling and children’s book Sammy the Salmon. He is also the co-creator of The Sales Game. Steveclaydon.com Whybravo.com Sales.game

| Bee venom breakthrough

By FRANCES VINALL

B

ee venom is seemingly effective in killing aggressive breast cancer cells, an astonishing new study from an Aussie scientist has found. Results revealed the venom - from honeybees sourced in Western Australia, England and Ireland - rapidly destroyed triple-negative breast cancer and HER2enriched breast cancer cells. The scientist behind the research, Dr Ciara Duffy, said a specific concentration of honeybee venom could kill 100 per cent of cancer cells. She said the treatment had minimal effects on normal cells. “The venom was extremely potent,” she said. Dr Duffy, from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and The University of Western Australia, used the venom from 312 bees to test the effect on the clinical subtypes of breast cancer, including types with limited treatment

options. The key ingredient was the compound melittin, naturally occurring in the venom, which Dr Duffy said can be reproduced synthetically. “We found that melittin can completely destroy cancer cell membranes within 60 minutes,” she said. “No-one had previously compared the effects of honeybee venom or melittin across all of the different subtypes of breast cancer and normal cells.” She said melittin in honeybee venom also had another remarkable effect: within 20 minutes, melittin was able to substantially reduce the chemical messages of cancer cells that are essential to cancer cell growth and cell division. “We looked at how honeybee venom and melittin affect the cancer signalling pathways, the chemical messages that are fundamental for cancer cell growth and reproduction, and we found that very

Bee venom breakthrough |

quickly these signalling pathways were shut down,” she said. Western Australia’s chief scientist, Professor Peter Klinken, said it was an “incredibly exciting observation”. “It provides another wonderful example of where compounds in nature can be used to treat human diseases,” he said. Dr Duffy’s research was conducted as part of her PhD. “I began with collecting Perth honeybee venom,” she said. “Perth bees are some of the healthiest in the world. “The bees were put to sleep with carbon dioxide and kept on ice before the venom barb was pulled out from the abdomen of the bee and the venom extracted by careful dissection.”

When it’s cold in the morning and warm in the day, you can feel like you weren’t prepared enough as you sweat through lunch and freeze by the time afternoon tea rolls around. Layers are your best friends when dressing for this time of year and here are the five essential items you’ll need. By AMANDA HERRON | Personal stylist at Art of Style Scarves – it might sound a little obvious, but these guys are your best friends! They are fast and easy to add or remove and keep your neck warm from the wind when you need it most. You don’t have to spend a lot on scarves, so find some that are the right colour and pattern for you.

Jackets – choose something in a cotton or poly blend that can still ‘breathe’ so you don’t get too hot, but the weave is tight enough to keep the wind out. Think denim jackets, blazers and bomber jackets. Full polyester windbreakers tend to trap the heat in, so keep one in your car but avoid wearing it in the office. Portmans Blazers are great style pieces for your work wardrobe.

Ankle boots or closed in shoes – something you can hide a sock in to keep your feet warm! It’s not revolutionary, but it does make sense to put an extra layer on your limbs where the circulation isn’t as good. Wittner and Midas have great versatile shoe options.

Hats – this look may be too bold for some, but if you can find a hat that suits your face and your style, you’ll take it with you everywhere. They are great for keeping your head warm and then keeping the sun off your face later in the day. A must-have if you’re heading to the markets! Check out Myer for some great options.

Cardigans – these are great layering items that can exist invisibly under your work jacket, or they can add a pop of colour if you’d like. Some cute options can be found from Review.

THE TRICK TO GETTING YOUR MAKEUP AND DRESS TO MATCH When you have a bright, sparkly dress on, with stunning gold hoops and rings that sparkle with diamonds, sometimes toning down the makeup is the best course of attack. Makeup artist and beauty guru at HCP, Jaime says finding that happy balance to get your make up and dress to match can make a huge difference in the complete look. “If you have a glittery dress, you can’t put too much glitter on the face or it will just be too much!” For our look in this month’s magazine, Jamie has found the sweet spot by opting for a matte eye look with a elegant swatch of glitter to keep the balance between the model’s gold earrings and shimmery outfit.

communities. For some survivors, a mastectomy is what it takes to conquer evil and defeat breast cancer. What this involves is the complete

and have experienced a mastectomy have reduced sensation in the tissue, so it’s not necessarily as painful as a regular tattoo. For June being able to help her clients and these women in such away, especially in the past ten weeks, she finds her business’ therapy is therapy for herself. “The fact that what I create on clients is something that they can't share with anyone else that they're doing it purely for themselves, to boost their confidence, to give them colour and definition, and I guess life, back into their face and body. “That's something that I really love to see when they sit up on the bed and they see their results because my results are instant. “Quite often it's a teary moment between myself and the client; they've trusted within me to create a look for them that they're going to walk around proudly every day,” June told Style. June completes her work from her own clinic, Beauty Effects in Toowoomba City, and is the ‘go-to’ for Toowoomba’s Hope Horizons. lucky enough to have reconstructive surgery to recreate what is being lost. Moreover, it can be done at the same time as a mastectomy, through immediate reconstruction. One thing that sometimes cannot be saved are the nipples – which can be one of the most vital parts of a woman’s breast that helps her feel feminine again. We spoke with June Warry, one of the few beauticians who specialises in the cosmetic tattooing of the areola. Helping return a woman’s breast to its former glory is what helps survivors feel whole again, June says. “They really enjoy the reflection that they see back in the mirror. “They enjoy seeing that colour there. “They’ve done something for themselves, and I think that’s a huge thing to come away with,” June says. “It’s life changing for a lot of clients and it gives themselves permission that they are worthy and if this makes them feel better, go for it!” It is important to note that these cosmetic tattoos aren’t permanent, which can be good in the fact you can always adjust the look each time the procedure is done, and also that women with implants

NEW Toowoomba business woman Simone Files no longer needs to sleep sitting up thanks to specialist surgery at St Vincent’s Private Hospital last year – and she couldn’t be happier.

T

he director of a busy property management agency Blackbird and Finch and mum-of-three is leaner and healthier than ever. Severe reflux saw her in constant pain and medication wasn’t giving her much - if any - reprieve. After a consultation and gastroscopy with Dr Evan Willingham from Toowoomba Bariatric Surgery, the relief pathway became clear. “Evan suggested a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass to fix the reflux and help me lose some weight,” Simone said. “His goal was for me to get to 66kg but I have now lost more, a total of 36kg in just over 12 months since having the surgery in July last year. “My reflux issues were fixed instantly and I am now on no medication other than multi-vitamins.” Simone says she does have one regret – that she didn’t have the surgery sooner. “It was one of the best decisions I have ever made; I feel great,” she said. “I still get to eat and drink what I like, just in much smaller quantities. “Now I look back I can see that being overweight really did limit me in doing the things I wanted to. “I would shy away from being in photos. “The other day I even contemplated

going jogging, something I wouldn’t even have thought of doing before.” The clothes she now chooses are a size eight to 10 – down from a size 20. Simone credits her successful journey to a healthier life to the comprehensive support offered through Dr Willingham’s practice. “Evan is such a lovely doctor, he really cares and wants to look after you. “Tia the practice nurse and Steph the accredited practicing dietitian are both great and they are there to answer any questions.” Dr Willingham explained there were several weight-loss surgery options available to patients depending on a variety of criteria. “Many people have the impression that being overweight is due solely to a lack of willpower, but it’s much more complex than that,” he said. “We take the time to understand each patient’s history and goals to work out an individualised plan to help them. “Bariatric surgery is evolving and patients need to be supported, and we will soon be offering evening patient information sessions.” Toowoomba Bariatric Surgery can be reached on (07) 4580 0828 to obtain further information.

Simone Files couldn’t be happier with the positive effects of weight-loss surgery last year.

Weight-loss surgery can help you get to a healthier life Recent research shows there are scientific reasons why conventional diets, exercise programs, or medication have limited long-term success for people who are severely overweight or obese. Bariatric (weight-loss) surgery options include:

Nutrients not to forget during pregnancy By LINDA BACK | Naturopath, Nutritionist, Herbalist Certified Metabolic Balance® Coach

F

inding out that you are expecting a child is one of the most amazing experiences you can have. And making sure you are getting all the nutrients they need for their growth and development is truly the best way to set your child up for a lifetime of good health. While most women know that it is a good idea to get enough folate during the preconception period and the first three months of pregnancy, there are a few other nutrients that you may not realise are arguably just as important. For instance… IODINE is a mineral found in seafood, egg yolks, as well as cocoa powder and some dairy products. Iodine is crucial to the health of the thyroid gland, and when your thyroid is not functioning as well as it should, you may feel unusually tired, mentally drained or experience digestive discomfort (three things you don’t need extra help with when you are pregnant!). Your body needs extra iodine during pregnancy, as your baby’s healthy brain development relies on you getting enough through your diet or prenatal supplement. CHOLINE is a nutrient found in foods such as lentils, beans, peanuts and egg yolk. Many women are unaware that they need a good supply of choline during pregnancy – and it is important to note that this nutrient is also vital for bub’s brain development too. Getting

Meeting the needs of women and their families across the Darling Downs!

enough choline may help reduce your risk of pregnancy complications such as neural tube defects or preeclampsia. With research showing that just over half of pregnant women, and less than half of breastfeeding women, get enough choline each day, ensuring you are getting enough choline is a good idea – both for you and your baby. Finally, a good-quality PROBIOTIC

may be helpful during pregnancy. Not only can these help with digestive discomfort that many expectant mums experience, certain strains of probiotics have been shown to be very helpful in minimising the risk of allergic conditions such as eczema in infants. With childhood allergies on the rise, it is vital to remember that 70% of the immune system is located in the digestive tract,

and I always recommend my pregnant patients take certain strains of probiotics (beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract) for this reason. Probiotics can also be used to help improve immunity to common childhood illnesses such as colds and ear infections. Restoring hormonal balance

By Ali Adams | Yogi

F

eeling a little overwhelmed by this year? Particularly if you’re a woman! Navigating lockdowns, home-schooling, working from home and financial pressure has put an enormous amount of stress on many of my clients who say they feel constantly anxious and more inclined to go for that glass of wine a little too early and frequently. Stress and some of the unhealthy ways of dealing with it can have a seriously negative effect on women’s hormones. And once your hormones are out of balance, you can start to feel even worse.

Setting some time aside everyday for yourself to just breathe and move gently can be a great start to feeling better. Even a quick ten to twenty-minute practice will have a notable effect on your physical and emotional well-being. Yoga has many tools to build your emotional, mental and physical resilience and self-care is so important, especially in these difficult and uncertain times. So, find a quiet place with few distractions, and have a go at these easy yoga poses that promote detoxification, regulate hormonal imbalance and relieve stress.

Eka Pada Rajakaptosana - Pigeon pose. This relieves tension in lower back, hips and glute muscles and can assists with stress and nervous tension. It also aids digestion, hormonal imbalances and bloating.

COLLECTABLE CREATIONS Your old collection could be worth a mint

I

t’s long been the hope of coin collectors to find a 1930 penny worth $20,000 and Toowoomba’s resident coin expert says it’s unlikely more of these will be found. Most people collect for a hobby, but for the more serious investor, prices for most coins and bank notes - like predecimal - are good value at present. Dennis Kronk of Collectable Creations explains: “Some coloured coins from the Australian Mint have increased in value like the first $2 red poppy coin bought for $10 is now selling for over $250. “It’s all to do with supply and demand, the fewer minted and the more people collecting, the price goes up.” With gold value at historic highs, gold coins like sovereigns and $200 gold koalas are now in high demand. Dennis even gives the ‘best price in town’ for gold including unwanted or broken gold jewellery. Collectable Creations antiques and collectables store buys and sells all

manner of coins and notes. Their customers are very surprised to discover they can own a genuine 2,000 year old Greek or Roman coin, even English hammered from only $50. Collectable Creations is surely one of the most interesting shops in town, packed full with a variety of collectables and antiques gained from constantly buying old and interesting articles like lamps, phones, signs, oil tins, tin toys, cow bells, clocks and war medals. Diversity keeps the business going and Dennis has added fossils and crystals to the treasure trove of collectables. Some of the most popular items are the large Megalodon teeth, ammonites, trilobites, large amethyst caves and pink rose crystal spheres. Collectable Creations is open from Wednesday to Saturday at 339 Ruthven St, Toowoomba, but is available to come to your home to buy on other days. Phone Dennis on 0409 272 620

CLIFTON’S HEALTH SERVICES COOPERATIVE

F

An abundance of medical services leaves Clifton in a healthy position

or over 70 years, Clifton’s Health Services Cooperative has been there when it was needed most. The stand-alone, not–for–profit organisation has been a cornerstone of the community — harnessing the commitment and expertise of the many doctors, nurses and health administrators who have worked together to care for the people of Clifton and the surrounding Downs area. Whether it has been through the Clifton Co–op’s 12–bed private hospital, the Clifton Medical Practice (which employs eight doctors) or the Nirvana Hostel (a 15–bed residential aged–care facility) they have always put the community first. This care and attention is just as evident in the Clifton Nursing Home with its 38

residential aged-care beds which now includes a new wing — Sunflower Lodge: a 12–bed, dementia–specific residential memory support unit. And, for independent living, there’s always the welcoming Vedette Villas — which provides eight self–sufficient units operated on a subsidised rental basis. Together, these facilities have been assisting the community since 1949 and the dedication and service of the staff within is assured for many decades to come. With doctors on call and registered nurses on–site for the hospital and nursing home 24 hours a day/seven days a week, you can rest easy that you and your family will be in the safest of hands.

HYDROSMART Smart system boosts yields - Fix your water today

O

nce installed, farmers can expect to pay about $10 a year in electricity to power their Hydrosmart. It’s a small price to pay for a nifty bit of gear that reduces bore salinity, protects plumbing equipment and has been proven to increase yields in crops and help fatten cattle faster. Hydrosmart’s physical water conditioning system is a simple, sustainable and effective approach to conditioning water. By applying it, farmers get the advantages of using a technology which requires no chemicals, no filters and no maintenance. Reflecting back, CEO of Hydrosmart Paul Pearce said the company’s roots started 23 years ago servicing vineyards in South Australia, as the business was surrounded by the McLarenVale, Barossa Valley and Clare districts. The technology took off and, since then, Hydrosmart’s have helped growers from a range of farming sectors including strawberries, broccoli, olives, apples,

citrus trees, right up to broadacre farms and livestock. Hydrosmarts have become a mainstay on many outback homesteads which, of course, rely on bore water. From go to flow, the installation process doesn’t take longer than a few hours. “We ask that the Hydrosmart is protected, so it may take time to put a small shed or enclosure area around it so it’s safe from the elements and any animals,” he says. “It will keep working for decades of use and there are no running costs other than $10 in power to run it yearly.” So how does it work and why is better than simple static magnets? Well, the technical answer is: “Using a computer program with electromagnetic fields and resonance frequencies that are put into water via coils wrapped around the plastic pipe loop giving water over 3 meters of contact time and oscillating ( jiggling ) H20 molecules we influence the polarity and ionic charge upon elements and minerals dissolved and present in

that activated water which in turn helps to weaken their bonds and produce a wide range of beneficial outcomes. This provides a simple ‘physical’ solution to many problems in the use of that water - particularly highly mineralised salty, iron or calcium rich sources.” But, in a nutshell, the device softens hard water to improve overall yields. Just like a good overnight rainfall, which can only be gifted by the weather gods, farmers can notice a difference to their crop within a few days. “We have had vineyards report seeing vines perk up within a week of applying one as the flushing away of sodium and chlorides at the root zone acts like a rainwater event and plants pick up rapidly,” he says. “They can pull up more water and nutrient for better growth and longer stronger canes, better canopy and grape quality and yield.” A beef farmer contacted Hydrosmart when they realised their poll Herefords

were unable to gain weight on their regular bore water. “They had water, but it was not allowing the cattle to fatten up,” Mr Pearce says. The bore ran water with moderately high levels of salinity (7000 ppm) which Mr Pearce says the cattle were not enjoying at all. The farm turned to Hydrosmart who supplied them with a 30mm pipe sized resonance frequency water conditioner to treat the water which was considered very low quality for beef cattle. After installation the cattle began putting on weight again as they drank from the Hydrosmart conditioned saline water. “After moving over to Hydrosmart in January one lamb feed-lot in New South Wales said that they observed a 15 per cent weight gain over six weeks,” Mr Pearce says. Farmers interested in installing a Hydrosmart can claim purchase back on COVID-19 business tax relief schemes or using various government drought relief offers.

PREMIER QLD Don’t miss out on travel for 2021

P

remier QLD has been providing school bussing, project bussing, school, private and event charters, trips to sporting venues, school excursions and extended trips as well as domestic and international trips. Tammy Bell is the senior manager and has been in the transport industry for more than six years. “Their coaches run anytime day or night as required,” she says. “We’re already booking Snow trips for 2021, general charter and sporting trips.” HOW DID COVID-19 AFFECT YOUR PREMIER QLD? It was a very challenging time causing a large decline in our charter work; we are extremely fortunate that we have essential school runs and project bussing keeping the business operational during these times. Things are now improving with charter work and school excursions starting up again. HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH THESE HURDLES? Our coaches are always kept to the

highest standards of cleanliness but this was taken to a whole new level of disinfecting and sterilising after each and every transfer. Social distancing measures were put in place, training, PPE purchased to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers, COVID tracing, zero contact with customers and clients, meetings done via Zoom, Teams, etc. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU FOUND DURING THESE TIMES? With zero contact for all deliveries, our staff and drivers have become more self-conscious and aware of their hygiene, not only for themselves but also for their buses. Meetings are all through Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet which has allowed more time in the office and better production. WHAT ARE PREMIER QLD’S CURRENT OPENING DAYS AND TIMES? ueenslanders are extremely fortunate to have a climate that allows for shorts and dresses most of the year round. For those living with varicose veins, many are self-consciousness of other people noticing and so limit their clothing choices, becoming used to concealing their legs under maxi skirts, trousers, or even long socks. Others may not be bothered by the appearance, but instead suffer from aches, swelling and restless legs at night. These symptoms can be exacerbated during the heat of summer, making the sunny lifestyle we are renowned for something to be dreaded rather than enjoyed. Regardless of which category patients fall in to at their final review, following successful treatment we commonly hear them say they wished they had come in

LEAF SHIELD Be prepared before it’s too late!

C

leaning gutters is a job that nobody likes doing, but if it’s not done regularly, there can be costly consequences. Spring is renowned for windy conditions making it especially important to protect your gutters and prevent the nasty build-up of leaves and debris. Flooded ceilings and rusted gutters are the most common problems people experience as a result of clogged gutters. Gutters filled with leaves and debris are known to attract nests of unwanted critters including ants, cockroaches and

other insects. Leaf Shield specialises in all types of gutter guard including stainless steel and aluminium gutter guards. The company has a solution for any type of leaf, no matter how small - including jacarandas and fine needles - and its gutter guards can be fitted onto any roof type. Leaf Shield can also prevent birds, snakes, possums and vermin from entering your roof and gutters. With summer just months away, now is also the perfect time to prepare your gutters from summer storms and periods

of heavy rainfall. Owner of Leaf Shield Gutter Protection Sherrie Blundell said the business can offer its customers a range of products that can keep your valleys and gutters flowing beautifully in the heaviest of downpours. “Stormwater coming into your roof due to blocked gutters or valleys can cause major problems,” Ms Blundell said. Valleys often get overlooked, but if leaves and debris build up here, water can be forced in under tiles or roofing sheets and you can end up with internal damage. “Insurance companies and repairers say that many homeowners could have prevented internal water damage if their

homes had been guarded.” Leaf Shield Gutter Protection is one of the few companies that can supply and fit a successful valley guard product. Leaf Shield valley system uses saddles along the entire length of the valley on metal roofs. On tile valleys, the mesh is installed under the tiles and across the entire valley. This stops the leaves from blocking the valleys and allows the rainwater to run down the valley gutter, as designed. Phone the team today on 1300 362 246 for an obligation-free quote. LIFELINE DARLING DOWNS Highfields officially opens Lifeline store this October

L

ifeline Darling Downs and South West QLD LTD are one of the largest charitable organisations organisations operating and based in the Darling Downs and South West Queensland, employing over 230 staff and supported by more than 250 dedicated volunteers. Derek Tuffield OAM and CEO has been part of the organisation for the past 33 years. “We are delighted to be opening a brand-new store in the Highfields Central Shopping Centre,” Derek says. “Residents in the area have been asking for one for some time and now it has come to fruition.” The Highfield’s store will officially open on Saturday, October 17, at 9am. “We encourage the community to pop in and support their new ‘Op’ shop,” Derek says. This additional store will increase their ability to support the suicide prevention and various community focused services as the profits from the stores provide

much needed operational funds. You can find the new store located at Shop 4, Highfields Central,10517 New England Highway, Highfields. The new store will be open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm. Through the use of technology, we discovered that we had the opportunity to provide services to clients in our catchment where previously we hadn’t due to location and distance. 3 things you need to know

By AMANDA SCHMIDT | Director at Kennedy Spanner Lawyers If you have been left out of the Will, you may have rights.

CAN CHALLENGE A 1WHO WILL? A spouse (married or defacto) and a child of a deceased person can challenge a will, or their estate if there was no will. Someone who was financially dependent on the deceased can also challenge their will. If there is a mistake in the will, or if the will is invalid, and also if the will-maker was under undue influence or lacked capacity to make the will, a challenge can be made.

LONG DO YOU HAVE 2HOW TO CHALLENGE A WILL? Strict time limits apply. In Queensland you have six months from the date of

death to give notice to the executor of your intended challenge. You have nine months from the date of death to file your application. If you miss the six months and the estate has been distributed you may be too late. If you miss the six months and the estate has not been distributed, then act quickly to give notice and commence the proceeding. If you miss the nine months you will need special permission granted by the court to be able to proceed with your challenge. Other states have different time limits.

HAPPENS WHEN A 3WHAT WILL IS CONTESTED? Once you decide to contest the will, notice is given to the executor of this. Try to explore settlement of your claim before commencing proceedings as a resolution will minimise your legal costs.

An application is filed in either the Supreme or District Court depending upon the monetary value of your expected settlement. In support of the application an affidavit is filed. The application and affidavit are served on the executor. The time frame for the steps to be taken in the proceeding are agreed with the executor and a directions order is made. The executor then serves your application and affidavit on all beneficiaries under the will and also on anyone else entitled to challenge the will. After the executor, and all persons served with your application, have had the opportunity to file their own material, a mediation occurs where attempts are made to reach agreement. Mediation is often successful but if not, the challenge proceeds to court and a Judge decides the outcome of your challenge.

W

armer days, that wonderful aroma of new blooms filling the air and the dazzling explosion of colour that comes with them, it can only mean one thing - spring is here. It’s an incredibly beautiful time of the year in the Toowoomba region and also a very busy one for us in the real estate industry. For many, spring is traditionally the season they put their homes on the market. But just because the sun is shining and the birds are singing doesn’t mean that ‘sold’ sticker is a foregone conclusion. You need to make sure your home is presented in the very best light to ensure you get as many prospective buyers through the front door as you can. Yes, that means rolling up the sleeves for a bit - but it’s a small sacrifice to

achieve your desired outcome. To get top dollar you wouldn’t sell your car covered in dust and bird droppings obviously you’d clean it first. And it’s the same with your home. Taking the time to give your house a quick spruce up will make a world of difference. Give those countertops a wipedown, hide the washing and ironing away, vacuum the floors and give the bathroom a quick scrub. It all contributes to a cleaner presentation that buyers most definitely notice. The same goes for outside. I’ll be the last to lecture anyone on their garden presentation - mine needs a LOT of work at the moment (but then again, I’m not looking to sell). Spending just a few hours mowing the lawn, trimming back unruly shrubbery and hedges and weeding garden beds

makes all the difference. And as you wipe your brow after you’re done, take a moment to appreciate what you’ve achieved and how your efforts have gone an immeasurable way towards securing that sale.

There are a lot of buyers currently competing for a limited pool of houses in the region, so make sure they’ll want to stop at yours and not just keep on driving.

Kartoffelknödel

Potato Dumplings with mushroom sauce

4 Servings

30 Prep time (mins)

45 Cooking time (mins)

INGREDIENTS FOR KARTOFFELKNÖDEL 750g potatoes [that cook to crumble] (ca. 4 medium large potatoes) 250g parsnips, peeled and cut diagonally into 1-1.5cm thick coins 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 large pinch of salt 80g plain flour 80g potato flour 1 large egg Flat parsley, finely chopped for a garnish (optional) METHOD FOR KARTOFFELKNÖDEL

1. Water to a boil and set to a medium heat and cook for 20-25 minutes until the

potatoes are tender. Drain and put the potatoes back on the stove. There you leave them with the stove turned off until the residual liquid evaporates and the skin of the potatoes is dry. 2. Meanwhile, steam the parsnips, over simmering water, until soft (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat. 3. As soon as the potatoes are cooked, you peel them while they are still hot and then press them through a potato press (alternatively you can grate them with a grater). You do the same with the parsnips. Then you put everything aside until it has completely cooled down. 4. Now add the crushed garlic to the potato mix and season it with a little salt. Then sprinkle with the flour and potato flour and mix loosely with your hands. Then mix in the lightly beaten egg with a fork. Now knead the mix well with your hands until it results in a soft dough that can be formed into dumplings (if it is too sticky, add a little more flour or potato flour). Now you form eight dumplings. 5. Bring some salted water to the boil in a large saucepan and then turn the stove on to a low level so that it simmers gently. Then you carefully place the dumplings on the base in the simmering water. Now partially cover the pot and simmer for 15-20 minutes. While the dumplings are cooking, you can prepare the sauce (see right). 6. As soon as the dumplings rise to the surface, use a shallow spoon with holes (slotted spoon) in it to remove them from the water. Then drain well and serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS FOR SAUCE 400g mushrooms, thinly sliced 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons plain flour 2 shallots [or one brown onion], finely sliced 500ml vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped METHOD FOR SAUCE

1. In a large pan, melt the butter on medium to high heat. Then add the shallots and

mushrooms and cook for 10 minutes until the mushrooms are soft and most of the liquid has evaporated, stirring occasionally. 2. Now stir in the flour and set the stove to medium heat. Then let the sauce cook for another one to two minutes. 3. Now gradually stir in the stock. Finally add the thyme. 4. Now set the stove to a low level and stir until the sauce has the desired consistency (approx. five minutes). If it is too thin, you can add a little more flour. If it is too thick, add a little more stock. Then season with salt and pepper to taste. 5. Now serve the dumplings and the sauce and garnish with parsley (optional).

Volume: 19 Litres Original Gravity: 1.051 SG Final Gravity: 1.014 SG Alcohol by Vol: 5.0 % Bitterness: 18.1 IBUs Est Color: 26.0 EBC

Beer Time with Adrian Cubit October is normally the month having a pint or two is totally kosher. That’s because it’s the month Oktoberfest is usually held! This year is a little different, so none of the big fancy festivals are taking place, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t at least cheers. Meet Adrian Cubit - the man behind 4 Brothers Brewing, for a bit of Beer Time!

WHAT IS 4 BROTHERS BREWING? We opened the doors to our brewery back in April 2017. We’re located in a small, industrial area in North Toowoomba. Our taproom (bar) is open seven days a week, where we welcome visitors to come share a beer with us. We pride ourselves in using local ingredients, stocking local products, and supporting other local businesses and community groups as much as we can. Currently we can produce around 15 kegs a week, however we have expansion plans in the works which should see this capacity increased and a move of locations into the CBD. We supply beers to select local venues and bottle shops in and around Toowoomba as

B

eer is a major part of German culture. The country has approximately 1300 breweries (Australia has around 500) that produce more than 5000 brands of beer. Many different styles of beer were developed within various regions of Germany. At 4 Brothers, we brew a few of these styles as well, including our Hefeweizen, Dunkel and Rauchbier (smoked beer). And as part of our upcoming Homebrew Heroes event, we will also have a Doppelbock and Berliner Weisse on tap. Germany also developed essentially the world’s first food safety law, the Reinheitsgebot, in 1516. This regulated the brewing of beer, limiting the ingredients that could be used in its production to water, barley and hops.

OKTOBERFEST Held in Munich, Bavaria every year, Oktoberfest originally started as a royal wedding celebration in 1810. Containing horse racing and other spectacles,

well.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO BREWING? Growing up, my dad always Homebrewed. And while he would brew beer for himself, he would also brew non-alcoholic drinks like ginger beer and lemonade for us boys. Then in my late teens, I started to learn how to brew as well. And then I brewed on and off during my adult life, and I reckon like most blokes, had a bit of a fantasy about opening my own small brewery one day.

Oktoberfest grew from year to year. A visit from a Greek delegation in 1832 is said to have inspired the Zappas Olympics, which later became the modern Olympic Games. Although morphing over time, the modern Oktoberfest still contains a costume parade, after which the Munich Lord Mayor opens the first beer barrel accompanied by a 12-gun salute. Oktoberfest runs for 16 days ending on the first Sunday in October. The festival attracts over six and a half million visitors who consume around 6.7 million litres of beer. Traditional beer tents are still a major part of the festival, containing local breweries and brass instruments playing traditional folk music. Only beer brewed within the city limits of Munich and conforming to the Reinheitsgebot can be served at Oktoberfest. Outside of Germany, numerous Oktoberfest Celebrations are held around the world, many of which were founded by German immigrants or their descendants. They are a celebration of German culture with parades, food, music, and of course, beer.

INVEST IN THEIR EDUCATION, NOTHING IS WORTH MORE

A

s we begin final stretch of 2020, students begin to look at their future, prepare for their careers, their tertiary education choices and the rest of their life. Without the tremendous support and compassion their schools have provided for their students, teachers and families, we wouldn’t have as many incredible young school leavers as we do. In this education feature we look at the facilities that make students great and set them up for the future. Schooling doesn’t last long in the big picture, but it really is the beginning of anything you want! Like infamous human rights activist Malcolm X once said, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” So go forth and be great, and celebrate tomorrow today!

STUARTHOLME SCHOOL WHAT DID YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT THE WAY THAT STUARTHOLME HANDLED COVID-19 THIS YEAR? During the period of learning remotely, Stuartholme created ‘STU@HOME’ which essentially included everything we would do at school, but just at our home. We still studied all our subjects and interacted regularly with our teachers and classmates via Zoom. Sporting, music and social justice opportunities were made available to us. While we were apart, we could still build our community and stay connected.

IMOGEN FRASER School Captain 2020 HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT STUARTHOLME? I have been at Stuartholme for the last six years.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I was fortunate enough to be offered a scholarship at ANU in Canberra. I am excited to be relocating and getting straight into my degree of International Securities Studies. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT STUARTHOLME? The relationships with not only staff and teachers, but of course all the wonderful friends I’ve made. I know I won’t see them every day, but I’m sure we will still keep in touch.

WHAT WAS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT STUARTHOLME? There is no one stand-alone memory. I think my fondest memory is all the relationships I have been able to build.

WHAT ABOUT STUARTHOLME MADE IT THE PERFECT SCHOOL FOR YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL? Stuartholme challenges you to develop your own personality and be an individual. There is definitely not a onesize-fits-all approach.

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO STUDENTS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Use this time to find out who you are as a person. Stuartholme provides so many opportunities, so take advantage of them and try new things.

ST THOMAS MORE’S Meet the Trethewie’s WHAT ARE THE ATTRIBUTES YOU VALUE WITHIN OUR ST THOMAS MORE’S COMMUNITY? St Thomas More’s has such a great community feel. She has taken every opportunity to step inside classrooms, meet with staff members and is looking forward to meeting the parent community as COVID-19 restrictions allow. Ms Evans’ own philosophy of a personalised and holistic approach to education embraces The Glennie School’s long-standing tradition of ensuring each Glennie girl thrives in her own spiritual, emotional, academic, physical and extracurricular pursuits to become All She Can Be®. “A strong commitment to developing the potential in every girl while maintaining high-quality educational standards is important and something Glennie prides

itself on,” Ms Evans said. Joining Ms Evans as part of the school’s leadership structure for 2021 will be newly elected school captains, Sandra Miller and Kari Donaldson. Glennie’s captains traditionally express their leadership through community and connection and this will be no different for Sandra and Kari. “COVID-19 will certainly impact our captaincy plans, however, it will drive us to find new and creative ways to encourage our girls to stay positive and feel connected,” Kari said. “Relationship building, service to others and encouraging all girls to do their best in academia, sport, music, art and extracurricular activities will be at the heart of

our plans for 2021,” Sandra said. In 2019, Sandra created the ‘SONDER’ project which encourages Glennie students to donate stationery items to local schools with families that may be struggling financially. She is passionate about humanitarian issues and hopes to explore a career in criminal law and psychology. A boarding student from Boggabri, NSW, Kari has recently worked closely with school staff to highlight the impact of the COVID-19-related border closures on NSW boarding students and their families. school. Attending the College since Prep, Ashlyn has now taken on a traineeship with a local business in companion animals as well as the Head Start program in media production through the University of Southern Queensland. “I’m really lucky to have the opportunity

to explore two completely different career paths while completing high school,” Ashlyn said. Studying media arts in Year 9 fueled her passion for the film industry. “I find it really interesting, all the work that goes on behind making a film. I’m really interested in things like editing and directing,” she said. With a brand-new suite of electives now on offer in the senior school, Ashlyn is looking forward to studying in the areas

of drama and biology, keeping her foot in the door for both her passion for animals and media. “Mr Naiker has shown me the possibilities that are available through school to start planning my future,” says Ashlyn. She attributes the College careers retreat to her motivation to explore such a variety of opportunities. Juggling her time between school, a traineeship and uni course, Ashlyn knows she has the support of her teachers and family, and commends

the university and Mary MacKillop Catholic College for the support she and her fellow Head Start peers have had throughout the program. “The Head Start program at USQ has shown me the type of writing style required for assignments, which has transferred to my assessments at school as well!” Ashlyn said. With just over two years remaining at school, Ashlyn is well on her way to success, which ever path she chooses.

from a little leaking air in your Air Leak testing The Arrabri

By GEOFF GIBSON

O

ne of the major energy costs for your home is running the air conditioner. And of course, we do this because we like to live comfortably — not too hot, not too cold. It’s just not possible for that cost to be avoided completely, but it can — and should — be minimised! The ideal situation is that once your air con has brought your temperature to the right level, all it has to do is maintain that. So your air conditioner should only cut in when the temp begins to move away from your setting. But there’s that sneeky little breeze seeping in under the front door, and the garage door, and the laundry door and the back door. And around the sides of your sliding windows — all your windows. So your air conditioner runs to keep up with constant additions — sometime all day and all night. Bottom line is: the better we can manage the air tightness of our homes the better we manage the energy requirements for heating and cooling of our homes. Air leakage alone accounts for 15-25% of winter heat loss! The CSIRO have air tested 30 newly constructed homes in South East Queensland and have come up with an average of

Look for this column in next month’s Style... we will continue digging deeper into what ‘sustainability’ means for your home.

an Air Infiltration rate 12.5 air change overs per hour. This sounds incredibly bad but we need to compare that to a older Queenslander design tested at the same time that came in at 35 air change overs per hour. One of Geoff Gibson Homes standard home designs – The Arrabri – was recently completed at the Avenues at Highfields. This home included, as all our homes do, the appropriate sealing of all the external doors and windows. We verified the Air tightness of the home with a Blower door test and this resulted in a Air Change rate of 3.9 per hour. From this test we can confirm that our homes are three times more efficient than the industry standard. This great result has come from our attention to detail insuring the integrity of the entire envelope of the home. So when it comes to practical things to proactively keep energy costs down — before they get a foothold — the first and easiest on the list is seal the entire surround of our external doors and windows. There’s little point in putting in an expensive air conditioner without these simple steps. Well, it sure makes a whole lot of ‘cents’ to us and our customers. That’s why it features among our standard inclusions.

TOOWOOMBA STYLE | OCTOBER 2020

TOP TILE TRENDS

Make a stunning statement TERRAZZO TILES

One of the biggest trends of the year is terrazzo tiles. From the traditionally small to the more contemporary slab-size, the tiles make a bold feature choice. Offering a variety of colours including ontrend pastels and earthy tones and textures for a natural look to dark and contemporary for a sleek feel. Well-known for being low maintenance, easy to clean and environmentally friendly, these tiles will be seen on everything from floor and wall tiles.

WOOD TILES

Choosing an ultra-durable wood look tile over hardwood will offer a warm and elegant look with a lot less maintenance. Each tile just like timber offers their own unique style and character.

Imagine it Now

Home |

Wirebrushed wood-look tile shows the appearance of subtle, intentional wire scratches. The rustic, handscraped wood-look tile features the appearance of long, ingrained scrapes, making each individual plank appear handcrafted, unique and rare and the distressed wood-look tile is often mistaken for handscraped looks. Distressed looks, however, appear as though they’ve been through a lot of wear and tear. You can expect to see the appearance of scrapes, burns, knots, wormholes and more, giving it an aged, antique look.

METALLIC TILES

Trending in bathroom floors and as accent walls, metallic tiles stands out and follow the theme of using new technologies to create looks that had previously been impossible. Less common than colours, but no less eyecatching, were the metallic finishes, varying from subtle golden hues to shimmering, highly reflective surfaces. Unusual manufacturing processes were implemented to achieve finishes that add a sparkle amidst the neutral tones through the majority of the show. Keep your eye out for these metallic looks – you might be surprised by how many of these are already prominent.

Potting Mix Get it right yourself or buy premium grade.

Regular Fertilising The nutrients in that little pot won’t last long so keep feeding.

Home |

P

Penny McKinlay:

I recommend growing spring annuals in pots and placing them in bare spots around the garden.

Del Wagland:

We grew succulents and clivias in pots. If you are going to plant annuals in pots make sure you use a liquid fertilizer regularly.

Wayne & Narelle Schick:

Despite the frosty conditions at Oakey, we have beautiful displays of potted carnations in all different colours.

Peter & Carol Mullen:

Birds nest ferns grow well in pots when kept undercover and watered regularly. Geraniums look good in hanging baskets and fuchsias are always lovely in pots.

Julie Roggeveen:

It’s important to understand the potting mix used at the time of planting will not last indefinitely. The plant will need to be taken out of the pot, its roots and foliage trimmed, and then repotted with a fresh medium. With this in mind, select a pot that is widest at the top so that plant can easily be taken out when needed. Pot plants are totally reliant on you for food and water, so make sure you give them both.

NEED RELIABLE WATER IN TIGHT SPACES?

Vicki Layton:

I love my calibrachoa (looks a little like a mini-petunia) in a hanging basket as it has a long life and is always in flower. It gets watered every day and some sort of liquid fertiliser once a week.

Ed & Sheila Power:

We have begonias, petunias and tulips in pots. Bulbs are planted in the third week in July so they are ready for the Carnival flowers. Tulips are fussy but if you plant them in pots you can move them around in the garden for visual effect and to suit the conditions. I always keep some spares for Carnival time. At least annually, we repot all our pot plants. Because pot plants are inclined to dry out, we create our own potting mix which includes peat moss, compost and water crystals. Some commercial potting mixes will become ‘hydrophobic” which means they repel water.

Peter & Carol Mullen:

Hibiscus do surprisingly well in pots – you just have to shape them a little and feed them plenty of nutrient.

ot plants are often the visual focus of courtyards, verandas, patios and in strategic locations throughout a garden. They are versatile, attractive and maneuverable. But how do you display them to look good and what plants thrive in pots? Aren’t pot plants the first to die? What do you do if the plant outgrows the pot? So many questions … here’s what Toowoomba’s top gardeners said:

irst step: choose a playlist to get you motivated, pour yourself a cold drink, open some windows and light a candle (away from the window) or you can diffuse some essential oils: I like wild orange and lemon essential oils. They are great for freshening up your home and boosting my mood and energy. Now that the warmer months are upon us, It’s time to switch out my bedding to something that’s more breathable and light weight. There’s nothing quite like climbing into a freshly made bed after a long day. After I strip the bed, I like to give it a quick spray with a disinfecting spray. Glen 20 should do the trick. I sometimes will make my own spray using a mixture of 50/50 water/vinegar and 20 drops of my favorite essential oil. (Lemongrass is my go to and smells divine.) Make sure you let your mattress dry completely before making your bed and wait a little while after you get out of it in the morning too. Science has proven that making your bed as soon as you get out of it is a sure way to encourage and trap dust mites which can trigger asthma and allergies, and we don’t want that! A good rule of thumb is to wait 20 minutes while your sheets dry out after your

sweaty slumber. Ew, right? Now that I have stripped the bed, it’s time to shake my winter blankets out and let mother nature disinfect them before I pack them away until next winter. I hang my winter doonas in the sun on a hot day to air out before I pack them up. I use breathable woven baskets with lids to store my linen. I keep my quilt covers in one basket, fitted sheets in another and pillowcases in another. I use the RABBLA baskets from IKEA. I also like to keep a few pillows and blankets out for emergencies and to interchange my textiles when I’m trying out a new style and mood. If you have fans and air conditioners, then now is the time to clean them. Wipe over your fan blades with a microfiber cloth and give your air conditioning vents a scrub too. You’ll be sure to use your fans more often now that it’s warming up and we don’t want to be flinging more dust around our freshly cleaned homes. Next step, and my most disliked task, yet the most satisfying: vacuuming! I always clean the dust filter out before

I

would say I’m a bit of a sceptic when it comes to ghosts, spirits and the paranormal. I’ve never had an experience that couldn’t be explained; felt haunted or told by a voice other than mine or anyone else in the room to ‘GET OUT!’ That was until I went for a tour of the Haunted Mansion at Woodlands of Marburg. The architecturally marvellous home was built in the late 1800’s. Woodlands has been a Grammar School, a seminary, and was initially a family home. Honestly, a hair raising mixture of ghostly people linked to a single place; especially when the idea is to go along and be spooked. The tour is led by the incredibly talented Katie Harvey, a paranormal investigator and medium with more than 24 years of experience in the field, which is longer than I’ve been alive – so she knows more about the supernatural than I know about life in general. Our tour started in the cemetery and grotto of the property, The small graveyard really sets you up and prepares

54

TOOWOOMBA STYLE | OCTOBER 2020

“I would know, I’m a sceptic” you for the insane experience which follows. You meet the dead priests and brothers who now lie forever in the cemetery, and don’t be surprised if you start to feel unusually cold or see people that shouldn’t be there – now is the time we prepare for the paranormal. At this point I was still fairly sceptical about the whole situation; we walked through a graveyard and over bodies, but at least Katie was able to share some incredible stories of the lives that once walked the grounds. We continued up into the mansion where Katie’s team of supernatural investigators had set up all their ghost equipment, from specially adjusted radios to infrared cameras and other communication devices. We learned about who had lived here, and who the team had experienced on their own adventures in the mansion. A young boy named Billy, whose death is still of a somewhat mystery; Thomas Smith, the first owner and resident of Woodland’s; his wife Mary Stuart; as well as servants and nuns alike who ‘haunted the halls’.

Photos of these people and their professions line the walls, which can come in handy when trying to identify the spirits you might encounter. My first paranormal experience came with a heartbeat in the walls. A light thudding, even and monotone and not being made mechanically! I knew it wasn’t mine because it was too slow, like a sleeping heartbeat; at this point I allowed myself to actively try to connect with any beings in the building who no longer lived. We walked upstairs and into the old bedroom of Thomas Smith, filled with a chair, duchess and poster bed; the room felt like it had not been used since his passing. We were shown how the special ghost equipment worked - in particular, spirit balls and trigger items. Spirit balls are essentially light-up cat toys, but they can only be set off with touch. I wasn’t fortunate enough to see any set off as such, but rather not set off at all. One minute even the slightest knock would trigger the ball, the next something as hard as the table being banged by us would not make it light up. Something seemed to be blocking it. Marbles were Katie’s choice of trigger item in the mansion, as a young boy named Billy, who lived at the property, drowned when he was seven and was said to love playing marbles. So, don’t be surprised if you literally ‘lose your marbles’ while on this experience. We then ventured into Thomas Smith’s study, where a radio was set up on the desk and adjusted to flick through 100 channels every minute. With this, spirits can ultimately hijack the device and use our own words to communicate with us. But this wasn’t the strangest thing that happened in that room. One of the investigators sat down at the desk and opened a drawer. Instantly he was met with a growl of a male’s voice, “get out!” A sickening feeling came over the investigator. Needless to say, none of us sat down at the desk afterwards, although another woman on the tour also felt instantly sick to her stomach after we left the study, so heed my words when I say this really isn’t for the faint-hearted. I’d

also be cautious if you have a pacemaker, because these spirits were turning off every piece of equipment they had; my phone’s battery was cut in half, and I had it on aeroplane mode! The next room was Mary’s room. This was where we all heard the voices of the spirits. ‘Will’, ‘Tom’, and ‘Mary’, were all clearly heard multiple times through the equipment. We also heard the likes of a Bob or Robert who was quite present. Then it got personal as the names of others in our group were said. “Michael, move” the voices demanded, and listed the names of the investigators in the room too. I never heard my name, but I think I was okay with that. What I did experience was a draft, a thin breeze that I can only describe as the same as if a door had been left slightly open. I kept needing to move around the room to move away from the breeze, which followed me and reached me everywhere I went. Another woman in the room had intense hot and cold flushes, but the temperature monitor in the room barely swayed from its moderate 17 degrees. The final location we ventured into was the cellar; a tight staircase leading us to a room built of stone and concrete. It was at this point of the experience we could chill out, by choice – have a drink or two and discuss with others on the adventure what they had experienced, returning yourself to reality with discussion. At the very least, if you are not lucky enough to feel that wisp of the paranormal, you achieve knowledge of an incredible homestead hidden in the beauty of Marburg. There is more to the property, as it’s used as a café and motel on weekends and even a wedding venue, but when the lights all turn on it goes from haunted to hunky (can we call a mansion hunky? I’m not sure, but personification, let’s go with it). With us all locked in Queensland - many thanks to COVID-19 - I would strongly urge you to try this experience and take a tour of the haunted mansion at Woodlands of Marburg. Bring a torch, a jacket and some of your best ghost stories for a truly haunted October you cannot forget.

Toowoomba’s oldest homes we all forgot still existed By KATHERINE SAMPSON

O

ur town has grown immensely in the past 20 years, so it’s no surprise that what Toowoomba used to be is almost impossible to imagine now. If you’re wanting an incredible historic story on the history and people of Toowoomba back when the roads were dust and a litre of milk cost 3 cents, we sat down with local history guru Peter Cullen aboout five of Toowoomba historical homes, and they’re more interesting than you might think. The Millbrook, Harlaxton House, Weetwood Homestead, Smithfield House and Ascot House were all built in the late nineteenth century and each has a remarkable story!

MILLBROOK This was the home of Toowoomba’s first mayor, William Henry Groom, and his wife Grace. He played a huge part in Toowoomba history including being the owner of The Chronicle during the 1800s. The home was originally built on Ruthven Street, in the vicinity of what is now Rumours, in the 1860s – a prime location for the town’s mayor. When W.H Groom died in 1901 his wife chose to have the house moved to its current placement at 9 Philip Street. Peter Cullen says the Historical Society believes she moved the home to be away from the river that runs through the centre of Toowoomba, others have said she moved Millbrook to get away from the main thoroughfare and constant sound of carriages and horses. SMITHFIELD HOUSE There are a tonne of big names in the creation of this beautiful home in the now Smithfield Estate in Harristown. Designed by James Marks and Son, the same designer of St James Parish Hall on Russell Street, and constructed by Harry Andrews for James Taylor. Mr Taylor was a member of the Queensland Parliament and Mayor of Toowoomba in 1890. Peter Cullen says that Taylor was sometimes called the King of Toowoomba as his influence on the development of the city was so great. Taylor died before he had the chance to move into Smithfield; instead the house became the dwelling of Oscar Flemmich. He built extensive stables on the grounds, but left during WWI due to the pressure of the anti-German community at the time. Smithfield then became the Glennie Memorial School when the Anglican Church purchased the property, but it didn’t last long before the house fell into ruins in the mid-1960s before being restored into a restaurant a decade later. Today the house is owned and lived in by private residents.

Weetwood

Millbrook Ascot House

Smithfield House WEETWOOD This isn’t just the horse race we look forward to each year, but rather a beautiful old home located at 427 Tor Street. Built by Richard Godsall Weetwood was also designed by James Marks, but for Richard Scholefield. Scholefield managed a handful of stations including Westbrook when he first arrived in Australia in 1862. The house was named after a suburb of Leeds in the UK that was well known to Scholefield. He created a name for himself in Toowoomba as a Justice of the Peace and was a member of the Downs Club, the Royal Agricultural Society and unsurprisingly the Toowoomba Turf Club. Thanks to his

extensive involvement in the industry the Weetwood Handicap was instituted in his honour. Scholefield’s wife Eva lived in estate until she died in 1939. ASCOT HOUSE Hidden in Newtown at 15 Newmarket Street lies the incredible Ascot House. It was built in the 1870s as a private residence for a Toowoomba storekeeper Frederick Hurrell Holberton, who later became a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Ascot House was originally titled Tor House, probably from Holberton’s connection with Devon in England. Tor House was purchased by William Beit Jnr who had it renamed to Ascot

House in 1894, probably because of his interest in horse racing. A now prominent part of Ascot House is its ‘folly,’ an extension Beit Jnr wanted so he could better see the horse racing at Clifford Park. In the early 1900s, the property was subdivided, while Ascot House was bought by estate agent Frederick Bennett a few years later as a wedding gift for his wife. The excitement didn’t finish there, during WWII the house was requisitioned for accommodation of American troops. After the war the property was sadly converted into flats before its current owner restored it to a glory we can all enjoy once again.

Road trip games to try next time you’re stuck in the back seat

By KATHERINE SAMPSON

I

grew up in the country, while the rest of my family were Brisbanites - so my family were always doing lengthy drives between the mirages of sorghum and the towering monstrosities of Brisvegas. Today it’s pretty simple to keep the kids entertained when stuck on the road for a few hours, but not everyone wants their young ones to be looking down at a screen for the journey either. I have two sisters myself and can remember countless times we would squish into the back seat and kick up a fuss if anyone’s arm even grazed our own; we solved our differences by distracting ourselves with road trip games. Although they might seem out of date now, I can assure you time flies when you’re having fun and keeping occupied with these entertainment choices.

GUESS THE MOVIE SONG My sisters and I are self-proclaimed Disney buffs, but just the songs, so we would theme our game to the Disney franchise. Considering the last time we played this was 2012 and Disney have gone next level with their music, it’s probably not a bad game to try playing! RULES: • Pick a song • Sing the song (Be careful the film title isn’t said in the song or you might get caught out). • Other players need to guess what film that song is from. • If you guess correctly, you get to sing the next song.

THE LIST GAME If you have heard of the board game Scattergories, it’s pretty much the same thing. This game isn’t limited to a specific knowledge, but it takes a keen memory. RULES: • Pick a category to work from (car brands, vegetables, colours, types of flower, names starting with a particular letter, etc). • Taking turns, go around the group listing off things in the chosen category. • If you say an incorrect answer or repeat an answer you’re knocked out of the round. • The winner choses the next categories.

NUMBER PLATES Remembering your own number plate can be tough sometimes, so this game is pretty handy for that. The jist is you see a number plate and you need to make up a phrase to match the letters on the car. So if the number plate was 123 GIP you could say “Girls in pajamas” or “Gorillas isolating particles” the sillier the better! RULES: • See a number plate, preferably not a personalised plate; they’re too easy. • Each person comes up with a phrase. • Decide as a group who has the best, funniest, cleverest phrase and award that person a point. • First to 10 points wins!

TOOWOOMBA REGIONAL ART GALLERY From Saturday, October 3, to Sunday, November 1. Art as a Lifelong Journey by Roslyn Hartwig A new body of work by local artist Roslyn Hartwig exploring memory and the essence of landscape. Hartwig’s exploration has resulted in a collection of watercolours that are quasi realistic and textural landscapes that are unique. While her landscapes do not depict a particular place, they are suggestive of areas within the world we live. The works draw on past experience, both her own and the viewers, in order to make connections with familiar places. Together they build a record of her journey so far, while firmly establishing the future direction of her paintings. This exhibition is part of the Cam Robertson Gallery exhibition program that showcases the work of artists, curators and arts organisations in the Toowoomba Region. DETAIL: Roslyn HARTWIG | Overflow 2020 / watercolour on board / 46 x 61cm / Reproduced by kind permission © the artist

Style Artist chats to

Jayde Chandler

Tell us a little about yourself I am a mother of four living with my husband on our sheep and cattle property in Central Western Queensland, with Barcaldine being our closest town. I have a background in agribusiness and Interior Design. Describe your style? Varied but mostly I love to create multilayered, highly textural, abstract landscapes. I love to focus on the perfection of imperfections and use a mixture of palette knives, brushes, my fingers or even a stick from the firepit. Mark making is an integral part of my work. The thicker the paint the better. What inspires you? My outback surrounds, magnificent skies, memories of my childhood fossicking through dry gully beds, my children’s exuberance towards life, and my travels. When did you start painting? I picked up a palette knife almost two years ago. I had to pursue what I had previously been too afraid to. It is terrifying but I didn’t want to have lived a life without having a go! How has it evolved? I began painting landscapes but was longing to be more adventurous bold and carefree. So began my more expressive and abstract pieces, whose story is told through symbolism and emotion. I find these works far more challenging, they require more imagination and confidence. Why do you enjoy painting? I love painting for the escapism it brings. My first works were completed as a direct response to years of continuing drought and I found the release extremely helpful. You cannot think of anything else whilst painting. Some highlights of your artistic life? Gaining representation with Paper Pear and Art Gallery 19 Karen. Exhibiting at Wild Canary and Inverell Contemporary Art Exhibition. What do you like about Toowoomba? The gardens. The established tree-lined streets just make this city sing. What is your dream goal or project? Hmmm, there is a great part of me that would love to host other artists from all over Australia for artist retreats on our property here in outback Queensland.

A great agent and a great result!

I highly recommend Leanne Gillam

Exceptional

Leanne is a great agent. She is friendly, organised, and very professional in her approach. At our first inspection, Leanne had fact sheets about the property and it was very obvious that she knew the history of the house. She made time for us to inspect the house and extensive grounds, was always available and kept us fully informed on all aspects of the purchasing process.

Leanne is not only a fantastic agent but an incredible compassionate and understanding person.

Leanne recently sourced a new home for us closer to Toowoomba after we sold our farm.

Selling your family home alone is an emotional, scary overwhelming and confusing time.

Her ability to really listen to her clients, think laterally, and then work tirelessly to achieve a result is a testimony to her professionalism, qualities we found somewhat lacking in many of her peers.

I would highly recommend Leanne to anyone looking for a Real Estate Agent. Susan REVIEW submitted by buyer.

Leanne is truly amazing! We cannot recommend Leanne highly enough. Leanne went above and beyond to help find us a buyer during what turned out to be an incredibly challenging time to sell one’s home. Always thinking outside the box and coming up with new ideas and ways to promote our home despite the COVID-19 restrictions. Her knowledge is outstanding and her communication was prompt and thorough every step of the way. So glad that Leanne was recommended to us — we know we made the right decision in choosing Leanne to sell our home. Tracy and Mal REVIEW submitted by seller.

Leanne made this process so personal, she showed throughout the entire sales process that I was not just a number to her, she was very sympathetic and understanding to my situation and kept me well informed throughout the entire process. She explained all my options, so that I understood completely how the process would work. What could have been an extremely stressful time was made easier with Leanne. I would highly recommend Leanne, she is a very honest, compassionate, hardworking and caring person.

Ask the Medium Clairvoyant/Medium Catherine Sheridan has been using her gift to help others for over 20 years in both Australia and overseas. If you have a question for Catherine, email it with your name and age to toowoombaads@news.com.au

TAMMY, 19 Dear Catherine, I’ve had these two guy friends for two to three years now and I’ve friend zoned them both from day one. But they’re both amazing people and like brothers. Do you see me ever being in a relationship with either of them? Hi Tammy, I feel if you choose one over the other I see a fallout with the other. I am hearing keep them as friends but the choice is yours. There is another man coming in as I can see him coming into your life. You will be very happy with him. I hope that has helped you and thank you for your question.

KYLIE, 49 Dear Catherine, Can you see me changing jobs or towns? Hi Kylie, There are new beginnings on the horizon for you but not right now. I’m feeling a male around me and he feels like a father or grandfather. I am getting near the ocean would be a better option for you but just wait till a job opportunity opens up for you. Keep planning and the doors will open magically for you in the very near future. Allow things to unfold naturally so please don’t force it. Soon you will see the reason why for your wait. Just wait for that door to open and then full steam ahead. Thank you for your question.

GAIL, 24

JAIME, 32

Dear Catherine, Are what my godson’s parents are telling everyone true?

Dear Catherine, My mum works full time in a day care and goes home and just wants to be alone, even on weekends. My sister and I are really worried for her, is there something she’s not telling us?

Hi Gail, I am hearing they are stretching the truth. They are only saying parts of the story not the whole picture. They are showing me a closet door closed and I am getting the feeling of something being hidden and unseen. They are showing me two people whispering in each other’s ears. I have a lady here with me saying choose another two people to be his godparents if you want to. Trust your inner knowingness, your intuition. I keep getting the word “lies”. I hope this helps you with confirmation on what you already know to be true. Thank you for your question.

Hi Jaime, I am hearing she has heard or received bad news about something which has rocked her. I am feeling a female presence around her and she is saying she will tell you both when she is ready. She doesn’t know how to tell you both but she loves you both dearly. Just allow her to open up when she feels to. I am seeing that she is sad and worried about things. She will come around and tell you both very soon if not already. Don’t worry, all is well. It doesn’t feel major. I hope this makes you and your sister relax a little. Thanks for your question.

We are in trying times at the moment and the world is seeking peace. Peace from these energies, peace from the COVID pandemic, peace from the fear. This is a time of patience where we all need to come together, to join hands and help each other through this by supporting one another. Even if it is over the phone. Compassion IS needed at this time especially for those that are suffering. Practice meditating, deep breathing and staying focused as the end result draws nearer. Try sending love healing light energy to all those that are going through difficult times as everything will get easier for many very, very soon. There is a solution to this problem and there will be a positive outcome. Spirit are helping those who are trying to find the vaccine/solution. It is very close now. There are new beginnings for the whole world and we all need to learn from this experience. To change the way we look at things and towards each other. Love and acceptance are the key here. We just need to be patient for a little while longer. I see businesses will get on their feet but this month of October 2020, is a time for patience. Just relax and know that the end is near. Soon the gates will open and people will be able to travel again, but in the meantime try and help those that need a hand. Open your heart and show compassion, love and understanding. There are many who have been unable to see their loved ones who have crossed over to the other side but know they are all fine and have been well looked after on the other side by loved ones and spirit. Many of them were greeted by their family, welcoming them to the other side. There are many Angels hard at work on the other side which we don’t see but need to appreciate and show gratitude for, as they are greeting those without family and helping them to cross over. These souls are all being well cared for and looked after. There is freedom coming soon, so please be patient for a little while longer and in the meantime find what your passion is, find a hobby, join a group of like-minded people, learn something new, stay grounded and get your hands into the earth. Be present, stay positive, focused and always follow your heart.

t Mary’s College students shook off the dramas of a difficult year to finally celebrate their school formal at Picnic Point on Friday night. With COVID-19 restrictions still firmly in place, the graduating class of 2020 made the most of the occasion in what was a described as a special night by staff. While students were required to walk 1.5m apart from their date and had to be temperature-checked before entering the function centre, the school permitted the boys to bring someone of their choice. In fact, the poses for the photographs displayed here were the only times the students were allowed to stand close to each other. Dancing was not permitted but the students still had fun, with teachers hiring a DJ and running trivia. Boys heard from proud St Mary’s old boy Dr Devon Naidu, owner of Westside Orthodontics, who spoke about the school’s values, and how they held him in good stead. The formal was supposed to go ahead earlier this year but was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. All photographs were taken under strict hygiene and health standards to meet with government guidelines.
