ArmenianNewYear The world follows the Gregorian calendar, therefore at the stroke of midnight on the last day of the year the old year paves the way for the New Year. With the arrival of the New Year, all the old regrets are tossed out, old heartburns swept aside the whole world gets busy with new resolutions, new courage to face the world and new grit and determination. The practice of celebrating the passing away of the old year and welcoming the New Year with open arms is not of recent origin. It is centuries old‌. The history of New Year celebration dates back to the 2000 BC when it was first observed in ancient Babylon as an event to greet the new time during the middle of March and was an initialization of the modern concept of greeting the new time. During the 18th Century, January 1st was accepted as a beginning of the New Year. In spite of this change, Armenians in many regions of the country, like Udik, continued to celebrate New Year on Navasard. Gradually at the end of the 20th century all Armenians adopted the 1st of January as the official first day of the New Year. In Armenia it was a custom for children to gather in-groups on New Year's Eve and go around their village, greeting the New Year by singing songs to their neighbors.

They usually received lots of fruit as present. Decorating a New Year's tree was not one of the customs in the past. Within the family, it was a custom for the family members to exchange presents, but, a wife never received a present from her husband, as this was considered a disgrace. Children in the family, the youngest ones following the elderly, would go to their father, who had the presents hidden in his coat, and after kissing their father's hand everyone would receive his present. Parts of the traditional New Year's meal like various dried fruits, raisins, different kinds of nuts, gahin and others would have been previously prepared, but the pastries, cakes and harisan would have been prepared on the 30th of December. The most important among the pastries was the Darin, which was presenting the New Year. Armenian women liked to cook Darin for their family. The bread was kneaded with luck and good wishes pressed into the dough before it was cooked. Darin was big flat bread, which had a coin hidden in it. The person who found the piece with the coin in it was considered the 'lucky' member of the family for the New Year.

TraditionsofChristmasCelebration New Year is a time of the year when the “Box of Miracles” opens to grant everyone with love, kindness and dreams. It brings joy and enthusiasm spreading its lovely spirit over people’s homes. In addition to the New Year revelries and the pleasure of exchanging gifts Christian world celebrates also Christmas. Due to the differences of Julian and Gregorian calendars Christmas is celebrated on various days. Catholic Church celebrates Christmas on December 25 according to Julian calendar and the Orthodox Church celebrates it on January 7 according to Gregorian calendar. Armenian Church being the only Apostolic Church in the world celebrates Christmas on January 6. It is interesting that until the 4th century Christians all over the world had been celebrating Christmas on January 6. But even after the adoption of Christianity many nations, especially the Romans, continued to solemnly celebrate the sun worship which fell on December 25. To prevent the pagan traditions the Roman Church declared December 25 the official birthday of Jesus Christ in 336. Later Christmas day moved to December 25 nearly in the whole East and January 6 remained as the day of Epiphany and Christ’s baptism. Adhering to ancient traditions Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates both the holidays of Christ’s Birthday and Epiphany together on January 6. The Orthodox Church begins celebrating the holiday on the evening of January 6 by the divine service in church and continues the festive ceremonies on January 7. According to the Armenian Church the week preceding the Christmas celebration is a lent period. People are usually coming out of lent in the evening of January

5 after Divine Liturgy when people take lights from church to their homes as signs of divine light and blessing. After the Liturgy in church people take part in the ceremony of “Water Blessing” to symbolize the baptism of Christ in Jordan River. And the miraculous water blessed by the Holy cross and sprayed with Sacred Chrism is distributed to people. The lent period ends. But nowadays not everybody follow to the rules of lent as it is impossible to resist to the temptation of Christmas festive dishes. Since ancient times different nations have preserved the traditions of baking various types of bread and pastry. According to the ancient Armenian tradition the ornament of the New Year table is Gata (Sweet Bread). The main pastry of the feasts is round-baked bread called “Tari” (Year) decorated with nuts, walnuts and raisins which are the symbols of prosperity. Armenian women used to put a coin in the paste of the bread while baking. Then in the evening of Christmas they cut the bread into 12 pieces as the symbols of 12 months of the year to give to the members of the family. And the person who finds the coin is to get all the success of the coming year. Customs differ from place to place. For example, the Orthodox people gather around the table of “Holy Supper” which consists of 12 dishes, one to honor each of the Twelve Apostles. In spite of the custom differences, the holidays of New Year and Christmas are the favorite ones in Christian world. Christmas is considered to be the most domestic holiday which is celebrated in a warm homely atmosphere. This is a period of time when all are happy and hurry to congratulate each other wishing “MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!”

Lilian Keshishian Minister of Tourism and Sport in Uruguay

This time TourInfo had the opportunity and honor to conduct an interview with the Minister of Tourism and Sport in Uruguay Lilian Keshishian. Lilian Keshishian is an Armenian-born politician who works and lives with her family in Uruguay. For the first time she came to Armenia in 2005 on the 15th anniversary of the Armenian Parliament. At that time she was elected as a deputy and was the first Armenian deputy in whole Latin America. During this official visit she is the Minister of Tourism and Sport and had a lot of fruitful official meetings with the members of Armenian government. In the interview the minister confesses that she had few time to walk in the street, but she noticed a lot of changes. More and more hotels, restaurants, shopping centers appeared in the city. This is out of doubt. But at the same time there are many problems in villages which can be seen not only in Armenia, but in all the countries of the world. In spite of these difficulties people go on being warm, hospitable, polite… She can say that some changes are just obvious and there are things that the government is trying to maintain. As for the tourism Uruguay has made a lot of success for the recent years. They had nearly 3 million tourists and more than 2 million dollars of income from tourism industry. Uruguay worked a lot with the countries of the region. The minister thinks that Armenia has a great potential as a touristic country. First of all as a religious destination, besides, cultural, historical… Armenia sets apart from the countries of this region as a Christian country as it is surrounded mainly by Muslims. But there should be taken measures to make people recognize Armenia as a country with huge cultural and historical heritage. If people aren’t conscious of this, no one can speak about tourism. Besides, she added that tourism needs a lot of investments. Actually investing money in this sphere is not useless expenses. But not only economical factor, cultural, educational factors are impor-

tant as well. And the most essentialthing is that tourism is a peaceful activity. Both the government of Armenia and Uruguay plan to maintain good relations in the sphere of tourism. An agreement was signed between two countries on cooperation in the field of tourism. Uruguay has studied the statistics of tourism in detail and has also been occupied with preparing human resources for tourism industry. She is sure that they can give us a lot in this context. The minister was greatly delighted with sports in Armenia, especially with chess which children pass at school as a curriculum subject. She claims that it’s a challenge for the 21st century. They in their turn are good at football and can help us in this kind of sport. Although the two countries are far away, there is warmness and love between them. Besides, there are a lot of Armenians in Latin America who are reluctant to cooperate with Armenia. In her opinion, Armenia has a great potential to combine sport and tourism because now Armeniatakes high places in the world famous competitions in such types of sports as weightlifting, chess, etc. She thinks that tourism and sport can walk side by side. The minister visited some places of interest in Armenia. Especially she was impressed by Tatev monastery and vine-press that is considered 6 thousand years old. Armenia has all the conditions to develop different types of tourism such as vine tourism, archeological, cultural tourism… And of course, Ejmiatsin is another wonderful place where one can feel the Christian spirit of Armenia. The meeting with Catholicos was very impressive and warm. The memorial to the victims of Armenian Great Genocide Tsitsernakaberd is of crucial importance for the Armenians living abroad as their parents were the people who rescued from East Armenia and settled in different countries of the world. At the end of the interview Lilian Keshishian wished Armenians all over the world a lot of peace.
