Valentine’s DAY

A

A

Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship. It is celebrated in many ways worldwide and falls on February 14 each year.

ccording to the legend St. Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. During that time, there was an Emperor who ruled Rome named Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married and outlawed marriage for all young men serving in his army. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him imprisoned, and later put to death. Some stories say that the young couples, who Valentine had married, gave flowers and letters to Valentine when they visited him in the prison. Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and the story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure... Many people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing appreciation for the people they love or adore. Some people take their loved ones for a romantic dinner at a restaurant while others may choose this day to propose or get married. They give greeting cards, chocolates, jewelry or flowers, particularly roses, to their partners or admirers on Valentine’s Day. It’s a special day to honor the people in your life that make your everyday worth living your friends, children, significant other, parents and even your pets. Celebrate the feeling that can make a bad day better and evoke happiness that will move the clouds.

CELEBRATION OF TRNDEZ

40 40

days after Christmas, on the 14th of February, the Armenian Apostolic Church and all the Armenians celebrate Tyarnyndaraj, or as people like to call it, Trndez. According to the Bible, 40 days after the birth of Christ, Hovsep and Mariam took the Baby to Jerusalem to present Him to God and to the temple, as it was accepted. An old man called Simeon, who had asked God to give him life to see the Son of God, came towards them. This is how the holiday came into existence, and its name Tyarnyndaraj means “to go towards God”, that is to say “towards Christ”. The name Trndez, accepted among people, means “Let God be with you”. Tyarnyndaraj is celebrated with great solemnity. Especially newly-weds look forward to this holiday as Garegin the Second, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians, proclaimed Tyarnyndaraj as the day for blessing the newly-weds. The celebration of Tyarnyndaraj begins at the evening of February 13 as according to church calendar, new day begins after divine service when blessing of fields and gardens is performed. Later, festive bonfire is made in the yard of church. This right belongs only to the newly-wed bridegroom married that year. Later the couples jump over the fire. Those who are present light their candles from the candle lit at church, return home and make a bonfire in their yards, as when presenting Christ to the temple people met Him with chandeliers and icon-lamps. In the morning of the 14th of February, after the holy mass, at all churches blessing for newly-weds is performed to strengthen their alliance of love and loyalty. Customarily it is accepted to visit newly-weds on the occasion of Tyarnyndaraj with presents.

BUN BAREKENDAN FESTIVE MASQUERADE

BB

arekendan is an old Armenian traditional festival that we are seeking to revive as a form of civil action by calling upon the citizens to “wake up” and become involved in social processions in Armenia. Word Barekendan derives from the two roots–“bari” which means “good” and “kendan” or “kendani” which means “alive” or “living”. This year festival of Barekendan is celebrated on February 19. As all holidays Barekendan also has its sacrament. Besides the festive celebrations and feasts it has spiritual counsel. As the Great Lent begins the day after Barekendan, it is the final call for people to be uninhabited in their actions prior to the start of fasting. On the eve of Barekendan after the evening ministry in church the altar stage is covered with curtain, which symbolizes the exile of Adam from Eden and till the Easter the Gospel is not taken out from the alter symbolizing the hidden treasures of church. In particular, this holiday is an occasion in which traditional norms and routines are rejected and reversed. People wear masks, costumes and participate in games, performances and jokes as a way of expressing their opinions. The holiday is transformed to a masquerade spreading fairy happy mood over people. In this regard the holiday is often compared with other festive days but the most consonant one is “Fat Tuesday” or “Pancake Day” which is celebrated in several countries. It coincides with the eve of the Great Lent and presents a day of joy and revelry, games and competitions. The dish symbolizing the holiday is the pancake which is made of such ingredients that people does not use during the forty days of the Lent. Thus, Barekendan symbolizes the virtues of human spirit and the lent symbolizes the evil. In other words, Barekendan is the release from the hardships of the lent which means passing from sadness to joy and from the torture to peace.

WHAT MAKES ARMENIA SPECIAL???

EE

KHACHKAR

ach culture possesses a certain original element which becomes a symbol of the entire national culture. In Armenia that symbol is considered to be “khachkar, the so-called cross-stones, in other words-the monuments of Armenia. Khachkar is an art decorative-architectural sculptures based on the ancient national traditions and are made in different shapes. Khachkars are outdoor steles carved from stone by craftspeople in Armenia and communities in the Armenian Diaspora. They act as a focal point for worship, as memorial stones and as relics facilitating communication between the secular and divine. Khachkars reach 1.5 metres in height, and have an ornamentally carved cross in the middle, resting on the symbol of a sun or wheel of eternity, accompanied by vegetative-geometric motifs, carvings of saints and animals. Once finished, the Khachkar is erected during a small religious ceremony. After being blessed and anointed, the Khachkar is believed to possess holy powers and can provide help, protection, victory, long life, remembrance and mediation towards salvation of the soul. Among more than 50,000 Khachkars in Armenia, each has its own pattern, and none looks alike. Khachkar craftsmanship is transmitted through families or from master to apprentice, teaching the traditional methods and patterns, while encouraging regional distinctiveness and individual improvisation. A typical cross-stone is made out of slate of volcanic basalt or tuff. The central symbol of any khachkar was a new-born, growing like a tree or a flower, cross- the symbol of a new eternal life. Under the cross they cut a circle: the circle with the cross on it symbolizing celebration of birth of life, also called sun crosses. Above the cross

16

they usually placed common Armenian faith symbols-an eagle, a lion, a bull and an angel. For Armenians they were four beginnings of the universe-fire, water, earth and air. The cross is truly ancient and was used by Armenian Pagans long before Christians adopted the cross in the 9th century. Old Pagan fertility dragon stones (vishapakar) can be seen in Armenia near lakes, rivers and springs, where they represent the Tree of Life and the biblical Garden of Eden including fishshaped vishapakars that were carved and erected thousands of years before the Christian khachkar stones. Although the vishapakars evolved into khachkars, the fish tail was retained along with its Tree of Life and Wisdom interpretation. An addition was the equilateral geometry which symbolizes harmony, Sacred Geometry. Unfortunately, in the past few years, invaders have looted and vandalized many khachkars, destroying thousands of these stone treasures. The stone-cutters who made khachkars are called varpets (masters). Their art is alive and is in demand even now. Khachkars keep the spirit of Armenian people. It is quite natural that the art of Armenian khachkar is compared only with another magnificent phenomenon of the Armenian medieval art, that of Armenian miniature. The biggest cemetery with ancient khachkars in Armenia is near the settlement of Noraduz. A millennium of Armenian history is embodied in the khachkars over there. In 2010 Armenian cross-stone art was included in UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list. In every culture there is a distinctive element which is not found anywhere else, and which has become a symbol of the entire national culture.
