Screen Siren Kate Winslet, the Oscar-winning star of Titanic and the mother of two young children, is the face of Lancôme Rénergie Multi Lift. She talks to Arnotts about style, the meaning of luxury and her ultimate travel destination.
You have been a Lancôme ambassadress for almost seven years now. Is it still a relationship that you feel excited about? My goodness ... time has flown by! Is it really seven years? I guess this must mean that Lancôme’s anti-ageing skin care products really do work! I feel excited to be a part of a company that has such a genuine commitment to discovering more about what real women need. What have you particularly enjoyed discovering about the Lancôme universe? The Lancôme universe is vast and endless. They are always a step ahead, thinking of the next incredible product. For example, Rénergie keeps evolving faster than I can keep up. I am hoping Visionnaire will become a range of its own and become more than one remarkable product. How would you define luxury? Luxury is having the time to be with the people you love. To laugh and to keep laughing ...
What trip would you love to take? I want to take my little family to explore New Zealand. I know it fairly well from working there and I have relations there, too. How would you define your character? I have a lot of energy, and I find it hard to sit down. I am curious, I am open and I am adventurous. How would you define your style? Simple, and chic (hopefully!) on red carpets. But in my day-to-day life it’s functional with a lot of scarves and boots. What couldn’t you live without? My voice. What is your motto? You only have one life. Live it. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully being as happy as I am now. With our first campus built for the Golden Hat Foundation.

LA story
Smashbox, the make-up that was created to address the needs of photographers, started out by chance, and is now one of the key players in the cosmetics industry. Liz Dwyer talks to the driving forces behind the brand.
I
t’s often people’s frustration that leads to the greatest innovations. And it was the bugbear of acclaimed photographer Davis Factor that originally led to the evolution of cosmetics company Smashbox. “When I started out as a photographer, the make-up artist on set was constantly applying powder on the models’ faces. That really bugged me and I thought there has to be a better way, so I set myself the task of discovering it.” And so, Smashbox began. Behind it were two brothers, Dean and Davis Factor, who, in the late 1990s, were already considered 64

Hollywood heavyweights, namely because they were great-grandsons of make-up mogul Max Factor. And secondly, because they had just launched an achingly cool photography studio in LA, which would go on to become the epicentre of every celebrity photo shoot, west-coast editorial, and eventually LA Fashion Week. With a slew of starlets passing through the studio daily, Dean and Davis realised that they needed to develop make-up that met the demanding needs of a photo shoot. So the two – Dean, a business guru with an MBA, and Davis, a leading celebrity/fashion
photographer – merged their skills to create Smashbox Cosmetics in 1996. “We wanted to create make-up for everyone that solved the same problems at home that we solve here in the studios,” Davis says. Overnight, the brand generated a frenzied media buzz, with a host of celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron and Madonna lending Smashbox cosmetics their highly coveted seal of approval.

“All our products are tested out in the photo to studio. If it works in the tough studio environment, it will work out in the real world.” But despite being so well placed in media and make-up circles, and opening counters in over 50 stores, the first few years proved turbulent for the brothers, who took a serious financial hit. “Our sales projections were really off. We overestimated how big the sales would be. We ended up spending so much more than we made and taking out a high-interest loan,” Davis says. It wasn’t until 2000, when they had their first real breakthrough with the Photo Finish Foundation Primer, that their endeavours bore fruit. The now-legendary formula was

first created to minimise touch-ups during a shoot so a photographer’s flow wouldn’t be disrupted. “Everybody would go, ‘wow!’ and when I put make-up on top of it, we noticed the make-up started to look fresher,” Davis continues. In the years that followed, their expertise in photography, fashion and beauty turned Smashbox into a hub of Los Angeles style and culture. The studios served as the official home to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in LA and the Hollywood Style Awards. And it’s this unique “in the trenches” positioning which has continued to drive success and, moreover, relevance of their problem-solving make-up line. “We have make-up that we’re using on trendsetters every single day, and everyone gets a piece of that,” Davis says. “No other cosmetics brand can make that claim: created, tested and photographed at a real studio.” Such was the success of the brand that in 2010, the brothers sold the brand to cosmetic giant Estée Lauder. Dean and Davis still remain heavily involved with the brand, keeping their philosophy real. “We offer service with a smile, and never say no. We take the ego out of everything we do,” Davis says. The ego may be removed, but the energy and effervescence is still clearly there, and Dean and Davis still possess that illusive X factor. The Smashbox spring/summer 2013 collection is available in Arnotts now.

“My favourite piece of furniture is my Chrysler Desk from The Conran Shop – a retro deco working desk inspired by a great period in American automobile design. Six years ago, I published a book with Sir Terence Conran called Outdoors. It’s a weighty, inspirational volume full of the work of garden designers worldwide and, as a huge fan of Terence, this was a momentous occasion for me. To mark it, we held a joint book signing in his Marylebone Road shop and that evening, amid the joviality, I spotted the piece and bought it to celebrate. Since then it has travelled with the family from our London home to Co Wicklow. Every time I sit at it to sketch garden plans, I remember the privilege of having been part of such an intriguing partnership.” diarmuidgavindesigns.co.uk

His latest venture is a sleek space on Drury Street where he runs cookery classes and caters for private parties and events.
“I love my new Darwen rug from The Conran Shop at Arnotts. Its design is taken from a collection of simple sketches drawn by Sir Terence and they are hand-woven in India. I personally love drawings of any kind, almost more than a finished painting, as there is something so wonderfully immediate about a pencil drawing and this rug captures that.”
“I hate shopping with a passion, unless it’s for food or kitchen appliances, but I had been trying to buy a large flat screen TV for a while. I was finding it frustrating and every retailer was giving me conflicting advice. I called into the Arnotts Electrical department in an attempt to make a final decision and was impressed by the staff, their advice, and the prices. I settled on a Samsung 51” HD Television which I now use in my new private dining venue, Medley, and it’s perfect. A big selling point was the picture quality and HD resolution. It has very crisp images which is important as I link it to a HD camera so that guests can see what I am cooking and a new filter and panel structure eliminates layered images and produces clear images from almost every angle. The size was also a major factor as I needed a big screen for demonstrations and also for rugby afternoons and movie evenings.”

“My can’t-live-without piece of kitchen kit has to be the Kenwood Chef machine – it really is incredible. It makes light work of whisking, beating and folding and brings an edge of professionalism to home cooking. It is an absolute joy to work with and is build to last forever. l’ll admit I don’t think I’d manage in the kitchen without it!”

neville Knott As one of Ireland’s best-known interior designers, Neville Knott heads the school of Interior and Furniture Design at Dublin Institute of Technology. Neville also brings his passion for colour to Crown Paints as their dedicated Colour Consultant and sits on their Influencers panel, predicting colour trends for the season ahead. Some of these colours can be spotted in Arnotts, as Crown supply paint for their window displays and interior room sets in the furniture department. We can see Neville back in action this April, when his popular interior design show, Neville’s Doorstep Challenge, returns to TV3 for a second series. “I bought an old house about a year and a half ago that was in a very sad condition at the time. We were doing lots of sanding and I was frustrated because the vacuum cleaner we had kept packing in. So, I decided to buy a Nilfisk vacuum cleaner and honestly it was the best investment and is still my favourite household object today. I’ve tried all the other brands but the Nilfisk really is continuously fantastic – vacuuming everything while the larger hose and arms and lighter weight make it easier when reaching those tricky places. I can’t fault it.” MAGAZINe

Snappy dresser Jason Robinson, the British and irish lions rugby star, was nicknamed Billy Whizz because he was so mind-bogglingly fast. And now, discovers ben Webb, he has made a quick and typically successful break into fashion.
T
here was always something a little different about Jason Robinson, OBE, World Cup winner and all-round rugby hero. He was smaller than most rugby players, but faster off the mark. While other players seemed to huff and puff and play as though the world was on their shoulders, he wore a disarming smile, as though only half-interested, before darting into a gap that the mortal rugby eye could not see. Both on and off the pitch, he is a hard man to keep up with. This year, while working closely with HSBC as an ambassador for the Lions, he has also made the transition into fashion by launching his own clothing range with Gagliardi, which is stocked exclusively in Arnotts.
are rugby players becoming snappier dressers? I’d like to think so! Rugby has a stereotype that doesn’t really fit with fashion. The players are in the public spotlight more often these days, and so they are certainly becoming more conscious of how they dress off the field. Which are the most stylish teams? England
have recently been criticised for wearing purple. The All Blacks kit is iconic in rugby. It’s simple, but they always stand out and look good. The most stylish though is the English kit. have you alWays been interested in fashion? During all the years I was involved in sport, I was given things to wear, but had no input into the items. When I retired, I knew I wanted to become involved in business and the more I got involved in fashion, the more passionate I became. hoW did you get involved in starting your clothing range? When I stopped playing, I turned my attention to fashion. Fortunately, I was able to take on a role with Proskins, a company that specialises in high-technology fabrics and compression wear. I developed wider links in the industry and met Sam Borg from Bortex at a trade show. We are both into rugby and from

there I formed a partnership with Gagliardi in Malta. hoW much input do you have into the design? I have as much input as possible. It’s about more than just putting my name to a product. As well as coming up with ideas, I am working with fabrics and designs and other things in the background. What sums up the Jr range? The JR range is stylish. I wanted something that reflected me as a person, and I think it does just that. It has a good balance of looking fashionable whilst still maintaining a sporting edge. What is the secret to looking stylish? It’s important to dress to suit your body type. Owing to my athletic build, it has always been difficult to buy clothing that fitted well, but Gagliardi offers specially fitted suits and weekend wear that look stylish. It’s perfect for me.
When on tour, What Were the first things you packed? Boots! When you’re going away on a rugby tour, you can’t forget your boots. You also had to make sure you brought the appropriate clothing. The climate in Cape Town, for example, was very different from somewhere like Wellington, where it was very windy. are you enJoying life after playing professional rugby? Yes. It is difficult to adapt after playing professional rugby for so long. That’s why I have tried to take such an active role with the JR range and Gagliardi. I do try and stay involved in the game as much as I can, though. Rugby gave me so much and took my life in a direction it never would have gone otherwise. I remain active in helping grass roots coaching programmes and other charitable schemes centred on rugby.
