Hello and welcome...

to Trends Boutique, firstly just a little about me, I am a 42 year old mum of three, previously worked in Retail Therapy before the Billericay branch sadly closed to business. After so many friends, family and complete strangers suggested I should take heed and open a shop similar to Retail Therapy myself, i decided why not. So here I am, situated at Unit 22 in Barleylands Farm, Barleylands Billericay. Opening on Friday 3rd April, I am hoping to bring back the affordable trends we had all grown to love in Retail Therapy, both day and evening wear, shoes and handbags, with the odd surprises thrown in to keep you all interested, I intend to give my customers a really pleasant, relaxed, no hard sell shopping experience. Affordable, fashionable clothes, shoes and bags for all ages can be found here at Trends Boutique so why not come on over and have a browse through the rails and remember to say hello, we love a friendly chat at Trends Boutique. I look forward to welcoming you to Trends Boutique soon.

Easter: When The Impossible Becomes Possible The cross and the resurrection went together in the announcement of the good news about Jesus in the early church. So much of the teaching of the church fathers focuses on the resurrection as the proof that Jesus was the promised Messiah, that sin could be forgiven through him, and that he was the one appointed by God to be our Saviour. For without that first Easter Day, the cross is a defeat; there is no forgiveness, no salvation, no new life, no hope beyond death and Jesus’ mission was a failure - albeit a heroic one. In short, without the resurrection, the Christian has nothing on which to build their faith. Many people look upon Jesus’ resurrection as a myth, yet there is a huge amount of credible historical evidence (from Roman and Jewish historians) to support the fact that Jesus lived, was crucified and rose from the dead. But that should come as no surprise because the Christian God is a supernatural God. We believe that He created the world in a supernatural way; that Jesus was born by supernatural means, to live a supernatural life and to be a supernatural Saviour; a God whose supernatural nature is grace and peace. The writer John Stott makes the point: “Authentic Christianity is supernatural Christianity. It is not a tame and harmless ethic, consisting of a few moral platitudes, spiced with a dash of religion. It is rather

resurrection religion, a life lived by the power of God.” You may be a bit sceptical about Jesus’ resurrection, but one thing we can’t deny is the experience of the many Christians down the centuries, and around one billion people in the world today, who celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead and who would testify to the fact that a risen Jesus has changed their lives. But some people don’t want to believe because Jesus’ rising from the dead means that He is who He says He was and that’s (almost) frightening isn’t it? Philip Yancey echoed this sentiment when he wrote: “In many respects I find an un-resurrected Jesus easier to accept. Easter makes him dangerous. Because of Easter, I have to listen to his extravagant claims and can no longer pick and choose from his sayings. Moreover, Easter means he must be loose out there somewhere.” And if Jesus is ‘loose out there somewhere’ then we have a responsibility to look for him, don’t you think? The resurrection is far more than a passport to eternal life. It is the key to everyday life, to new life, to abundant life. The impossible becomes possible. It is possible for us to have confidence about the future, to love our neighbours, to forgive our enemies, to resist temptation, to be content with what we have. As those who

seek to know the power of His resurrection, we can do all things through the one who gives us strength. Might I encourage you to do all you can to look for Jesus this Easter? You can ‘find’ him in the: Praise of Palm Sunday; Poignancy of Maundy Thursday; Sorrow of Good Friday and the Joy of Celebration on Easter Day. May I extend an invitation to join with us here at Emmanuel or another of the many great churches in Billericay? May God’s richest blessing be upon you as you prepare to celebrate all that Easter brings. Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

For those with existing debts there are record deals available right now to let you cut the cost and save £100s or £1,000s. Yet as the old adage goes, banks are companies that’d lend you an umbrella when the sun shines and ask for it back when it rains. So getting cheaper credit when in debt is tricky – however I have developed credit card eligibility checkers which can help you check what debt cutting cards you’re able to get before you apply. If you can lower the interest cost, then more of your repayment clears the actual debt, not just services the interest – meaning you’ll be debt-free far quicker. So here are the key debt cost cutting need to knows… I make no apology for saying… stop borrowing. If you’re struggling, borrowing to make ends meet just elongates the problem - making it even costlier and more difficult. The tips below will help, but if you keep adding to the debt nothing will fix it. So take a deep breath, do a budget and examine all your spending to see if you can cut back. Best buys are only best if you can get them. While there are many great rates on offer, you need to pass a credit score to get them, and many fail at that hurdle. Worse still when you apply it leaves a footprint on your file and lots of those in a short space of time can hit your future credit worthiness. I’ve given evidence to Parliament on this ‘anti-shopping around’ system - little’s been done. So to fight back on my site we’ve built a free eligibility calculator – which tells you which cards you’re most likely to be accepted for. Just as importantly it does this without leaving a footprint on your file that lenders can see – so you can home in on the right one, minimising applications. To try it go to www. MoneySavingExpert.com/eligibility. Shift credit or store card debt to 35mth 0%. A balance transfer’s where you get a new credit card that repays debts on the old credit or store card(s) for you, so you owe it instead at a lower rate. The longest 0% deals for those new to the card company now last nearly three years (a year ago they were 30 months), but as with many things in

life longest isn’t always best. Aim for the lowest fee card, ensuring you’ve enough time to clear it. Top picks and golden rules at www.mse.me/ balancetransfers. Shift your overdraft to 0% too. Debit cards can be debt cards too - if you’re in your overdraft it’s often more costly than credit cards, especially if you bust your limit. So there are two ways to get out of this. a) Switch to a 0% overdraft: Top bank for customer service www.firstdirect. com offers a £250 0% overdraft (you must pay-in £1,000/month) and for accepted new switchers a free £100 which should help reduce the overdraft straight away. For some www. nationwide.co.uk 0% overdraft may be bigger, but it’s only for a year and is 50p/day after. b) Shift it to a 0% ‘money transfer’ credit card. A few balance transfer cards also let newbies ‘money transfer’. This is where it pays a lump sum into your bank account, which can then clear your overdraft so you owe it instead. Top pick is www.mbna.co.uk which gives 24 months 0% money transfers for a one off 2.2% fee (though it’s 22.9% rep APR after the 0% ends). Yet be careful, follow the balance transfer rules above and for more picks and full step-by-step help see www.mse.me/ moneytransfers.

Can you cut the cost of existing loans? It’s complex, as you need to factor in that most loans charge up to two months’ interest to repay them early. - Who should try? Those who can get a substantially lower APR loan (eg, more than a fifth off, so from 10% to 8%), and have a while left to repay. Full options in www.mse.me/cheaploans. - How much can I save? Someone who is 2 years through a 5 year 12% loan for £5,000, paying it off

with a 4.9% loan, could save around £1,000. Don’t pay all debts equally - attack the highest APR. Once your debts are as cheap as possible, list them all, including overdrafts, in order of APRs. Focus all spare cash to clear the highest APR one as it grows fastest, and just pay the min on the others. Once that’s clear, move to the next highest. I’ve never seen a debt crisis that isn’t solvable - don’t give up hope. The solutions above are for cutting debt costs. Yet for some, it’s much worse than that. Do any of these apply to you... - You can’t meet even just the minimum monthly payments. - You have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year’s salary. - You have sleepless nights or serious depression/anxiety over your debts. If so then you’re likely in a debt crisis and that means the solution you need is totally different. The most important thing I can tell you is I’ve never seen a debt crisis that isn’t solvable. It may not always be quick or easy, but there is a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. The first step is to go for free, one-onone debt counselling help from www. adviceguide.org.uk, www.stepchange. org, www.nationaldebtline.org or, if you’re struggling emotionally too www.capuk.org.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Global Recognition - Club member Nick Lamborn is to receive a presentation at the House of Lords for his leadership in raising funds for the Thriftwood special needs School 6th form academy. In addition to funds raised by Mayflower Rotary through such events as Summerfest and Christmas Market, Nick inspired the whole of Rotary District 1240 (East England) to contribute as well as obtaining matching grants from Rotary International. The Thriftwood project has been hailed as an excellent example of what Rotary is about and what can be achieved when clubs collaborate on a project. Summerfest on July 12 and Christmas Market on Dec 6 are already starting to get booked for stalls so two more great community days for Billericay are well under way. Before that there is a full programme of events, some social, some fund raising, some a bit of both. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Hello Folks, thanks for pausing awhile. Well all the excitement of our own little general election has passed and we are ready to start a new year in July with a new ‘cabinet’. Our next President will be Dave Parker, with yours truly as Secretary (or ‘Rewrite’, as the minutes will probably have to be corrected regularly!) Other posts have also been filled and new programmes are already being planned. Ten club members and assorted partners visited Bletchley Park last month and proved very enjoyable. It was a really interesting day and a chance to marvel at the work of a former secret service. (How did they do that?) Our darts tournament is a now a distant memory and was won NOT by a Billericay club member, but by a fellow Lion from Romford Lions, who came to join us for the evening. Well it serves him right and he has to keep the trophy polished all year! The Taste Night, with food from the Caribbean, due on April 16th promises to be yet another success with a capacity crowd of over 100 people seated and more queuing to take part. This event has become a very popular fund raising activity for us and was sold out in early December. Don’t forget to come and have a chat to Lions’ members on our Saturday morning bookstall in the High Street. It’s always nice to meet up for a chat and make new friends. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.

So, what have Billericay Round Table been up to over the last month or so? Well, the answer to that is “quite a lot!” Following on from the previous month where we donated £11,000 to the Hanningfield Sailability project to allow them to purchase two specialist sailing boats to allow people with disabilities to get sailing out on the open water at Hanningfield Reservoir, this month we were able to donate a combined total of around £8,500 to a variety of local charities and good causes. Needless to say, it’s an amazing feeling to be able to help out in our local community as much as we are, and much of this is as a result of the continued support of Billericay residents at events such as the annual Fireworks display at Lake Meadows, where every penny of the proceeds raised is put straight back into projects that help those most in need. The donations and pledges made will (amongst others) aid charities such as St Lukes Hospice, BOSP, the Street Pastors and SNAP, all of whom do some amazing things for those who need it most. As well as these donations, Billericay Round Table have also been having plenty of fun with some of our social activities. There was a very competitive evening of go-karting over in Rayleigh that really separated the men from the boys, and we’ve got our annual Ladies Night Dinner/Dance coming up where we get to thank our significant others for all the support they give us throughout the year. So what is coming up for our members in the next few months? Some of us have signed up to compete in the Nuclear Rush race in Brentwood that involves participants running around 6km through rough and muddy terrain with a whole load of obstacles to get past on the way, a few of us have signed up for the London 10k race in July, and a brave few are looking at doing a fire walk! Exciting and challenging times ahead!

The first duty of an MP is to try and be a good constituency MP. Since being first elected, I have done this through holding surgeries, convening meetings and raising issues with those responsible, both in Parliament and in the constituency – often ‘below the radar screen’. This also involves assisting charity and community groups further their ambitions as their reach and expertise deserves our fullest support. If re-elected, I will continue to work hard on behalf of constituents. Under the Conservatives, the economy continues to improve and is now the fastest-growing in the developed world. The deficit is being reduced, taxes are being cut and jobs are being created. Locally,

businesses have benefitted and unemployment has almost halved since the last General Election. A thriving economy helps to resource strong public services, which are at the core of our communities. We will continue to protect NHS funding, improve school standards and reduce crime. Through the ‘Triple Lock’ guarantee, by which pensions go up annually by the greater of earnings, inflation or 2.5%, the Conservatives have increased the state pension by £800 each year. A Conservative

Government will continue to protect pensioners’ ‘universal benefits’. As a longstanding Eurosceptic, I led the Parliamentary campaign for an in/out EU referendum, believing it is essential the British people are allowed their say on this important issue. My letters to the Prime Minister, signed by 100 Conservative MPs, persuaded David Cameron to promise a referendum by 2017. Only the Conservatives are willing and able to offer an in/out referendum.

JOHN BARON

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Basildon and Billericay

General Election - Thursday 7

Basildon is my hometown. I love living here. I’m proud to be from Essex and I’m proud to be standing for parliament in a town where I know I can make a real difference. The crux of my plan is simple; as your Member of Parliament, working people will be my absolute priority. To that end, I will do five key things. A STRONG ECONOMIC FOUNDATION I will balance the books and cut the deficit every year while securing the future of the NHS. None of Labour’s manifesto commitments require additional borrowing.

HIGHER LIVING STANDARDS FOR WORKING FAMILIES I will freeze energy bills until 2017 and give the regulator the power to cut bills this winter, ban exploitative zero-hours contracts, raise the minimum wage to £8 and provide 25 hours free childcare a week to working parents. AN NHS WITH THE TIME TO CARE I will vote to put 20,000 more nurses and 8,000 more GPs into the NHS. We will join up services from home to hospital, guaranteeing GP appointments within 48 hours and cancer tests within one week. CONTROLS ON IMMIGRATION I will vote to change the law to mean people who come here won’t be able to claim benefits for at least two years and we will introduce fair rules making it illegal for employers to

undercut wages by exploiting workers. A COUNTRY WHERE THE NEXT GENERATION CAN DO BETTER THAN THE LAST As a 26-year-old I am dedicated to speaking up for my generation so I will vote for tuition fees to be reduced to £6,000, an apprenticeship for every school leaver who gets the basic grades, and smaller class sizes for 5, 6 & 7 year-olds. Unlike John Baron who lives in London and George Konstandindis who lives in Bedford, Basildon and Billericay is my home. I’m going to fight for it and defend it in the House of Commons.

Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Basildon & Billericay

Two issues – one local and one national - which concern many of us are the future of both the NHS in England and the Greenbelt in Basildon Borough. With ever increasing demands on our green spaces and greenbelt all parts of Basildon Borough are faced with potentially devastating changes to the quality of life for residents and insupportable burdens on infrastructure. From Billericay to Langdon Hills there are threats of large scale housing developments which Liberal Democrats locally

will continue to oppose. We support the Billericay Action Group’s analysis of Basildon Council’s projection of housing need figures which do not address the real needs of local residents. The priority in new housing construction must be for those in housing need, not merely aspirational housing - to a large extent for people from outside the borough - which gives developers the biggest profits. The future of the NHS is something which concerns many people. Like many, I have the strongest of personal reasons to help protect the NHS and as a party we will

resist any attempts by other parties to privatise the NHS. Liberal Democrats in government have stopped the Conservatives’ privatisation plans and we reversed Labour’s policy of allowing private companies to ‘cherry pick’ lucrative NHS contracts and get special favours. While I accept, reluctantly, that there may be a role for some private sector provision of NHS services, I strongly believe that the NHS should always remain free at the point of delivery and be based on patients’ needs and not on their ability to pay.

Cllr Geoff Williams M.B.E. Basildon Borough Councillor

7th May 2015...... you decide Following my local survey and canvassing since February, the responses in order of popularity are as follows. - Committing an additional £3billion of annual spending on the NHS in England and Wales - Ensuring people on the national minimum wage do not have to pay income tax - Introducing a new system of control for immigration using an equivalent of the Australian points-based system with no distinction between EU and non-EU citizens - Cutting the amount spend by Government on overseas aid - Holding an immediate referendum on whether or not

the UK should be a member of the European Union (EU) - Increasing spending on defense and the armed forces - Abolishing inheritance tax - Increasing the number of grammar schools - Scrapping HS2, the planned high speed rail line between London, the Midlands and Northern England - Removing “green levies” for energy companies. These are real UKIP policies endorsed by real people. Labour, can’t run a proper campaign here, and they spread lies about UKIP.

Everyone knows that it is a two horse race here, and UKIP is the only real challenger. However, the second horse remains complaisant. People are ready for a real change. They want their voice to be heard and they do not want once again to sign a blank cheque and a blank mandate. The government has failed in its promises to eliminate the deficit, reduce immigration and improve education and NHS. Stop moving the goal posts. Judgment day is only 6 weeks away.

The original business bearing the name Timmins (N.A.Timmins) was started in 1952 by Norman and Shirley Timmins as a plumbing company and moved to Warley Hill in 1958. In the mid-sixties Norman started enlarging the business by employing a carpenter and a general builder. In 1986 Simon Timmins joined the business and the business expanded further in 1989 by employing an electrician. This enabled a complete service to all customers. From then on (and to this day) we are able to undertake almost any type of job. We have designed and installed heating systems and domestic water systems in everything from small flats to large office blocks, Churches and even in a convent! In 2004 due to expansion the company took up residence at Cockridden Farm, Brentwood Road where we are today, shortly after Norman and Shirley retired. In late 2010 Simon decided that he needed to restructure the business

and not wanting to see the business close when he retired sought to find a way forward. At this point Daniel who was currently employed by Timmins as a plumber, suggested that I meet with Simon with a view to taking over the company and moving it forward, as I have been running my own property maintenance company for 20 Years In February 2011 with Simons help, the new business was formed as a limited company (TPSL) with Daniel and myself as Directors. In May 2011 we were pleased when Matthew was able to join the company as a Director and as our electrician. Thus achieving Simon’s hope, that the new company would be a local family run business, whilst still keeping the Timmins good name with little or no effect on our customers. Today the business is thriving, but like all good companies, it is only as good as its staff, most of which have been with us since day one, so a lot of credit must go to - Simon, Wendy (Office Manager) Samuel & Jacqui (office) Mark & Matthew (plumbers and heating engineers) Andy (roofing/general) Alan

Last month saw the launch of our second series of Countryside Walks around Billericay. We marked the occasion by following one of the routes on a bright and breezy Saturday afternoon, crossing the River Wid and following paths over open farmland. The vistas were good but, not untypical at this time of year when the crops and grass verges have yet to flourish, the wildlife sightings were patchy. A few finches and thrushes sang on the boundaries of housing and in little pockets of woodland, a Skylark or two sang overhead, a single Yellowhamer was near a strip of game cover and we passed through a noisy flock of House Sparrows and a small flock of Linnets at the animal sanctuary. There will be more wildlife here is the late Spring as this is one of the better areas for farmland wildlife, thanks to the tenant farmers using the Environmental Stewardship scheme. We saw Fox and Muntjac Deer, a few Peacock butterflies fluttered by and on our return to the car park a Pipistrelle Bat performed very obligingly in the dimishing light of late afternoon. I should mention the vast flock of woodpigeons, of probably around 1000 birds, which were clustered together, perhaps disturbed by a predator that we missed. The woodpigeon has exempted itself from the decline affecting so many of our farmland bird, they can still find food on autumn-sown crops. Their success is also down to the long breeding season; even when summer has passed they will carry on rearing young birds in the scanty saucer-shaped nests.

Spring is here; this month frogspawn will hatch in the ponds, more butterflies will emerge: early season specialities such as the Yellow Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell and Orange-tip. As the buds break out into fresh bright green leaf, our ancient woodlands become canopies over carpets of bluebells. It’s a time of excitement for those of us who love songbirds but also a time of trepidation. So many of our long-distance migrants have declined and we wait to see how many will return. Last summer was generally poor for warblers and nightingales but, along the River Wid, I found more Yellow Wagtails than in recent years. Last April, I recall finding this delightfully-coloured bird alighting on a stalk of barley then hearing the call of another close by, perhaps its mate. Whilst they are still coming back in pairs there is hope. At least two Swallows are needed to make not just a summer but more Swallows. One of the summer-visiting birds is the House Martin, once a familiar site in most built areas but now confined to small local colonies around our area. There are more in the North West of the country - it is no co-incidence that you see more insecteating House Martins in areas where we get fly-splattered car windscreens. This species is the subject of a survey by the British Trust for Ornithology this year - if you know of any local nest sites please get in touch. Leaflets for the Countryside Walks are available from the Billericay Library, Norsey Wood and EWT Visitor Centres at Thorndon Park and Hanningfield.

After completing a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bike ride or a 6.2 mile run, I am certain that a great sense of achievement would overcome any feelings of exhaustion or tiredness. The ultimate test in stamina would be completing all three of these back to back. Welcome to the world of Triathlon! With the famous London Marathon fast approaching, more and more people all over Essex will be stepping up their training in preparation for the great event. However, Triathlon is fast becoming the new way to test your stamina and being used all the time to raise money for charities in need. My first exposure to the world of Triathlon was while watching the Sydney Olympics in 2000, a number of people plunged into Sydney harbour with the Opera house glistening in the background, they were starting the first leg of the gruelling event. After the swim a commentator then said “now for the 25 mile bike ride”, my eyebrows immediately rose, but I nearly entered a state of shock when I realised it climaxed with a 6 mile run. Now, 15 years later, I can totally see that if you are ready to test yourself to limit that Triathlon not only offers you variety, but pushes your entire body to the maximum. There are people that train individually for such an event and produce great results. However, there is a club in Essex that are tapping into those that like to train within a group of people and also those who thrive the competitive element of sport and wish to compete against and train with peers and friends regularly. The East Essex Triathlon Club

based just down the A127 in Rayleigh has been going for many years and they are the club to join if you are looking to train for events throughout the year in Essex. They train every week, Saturday morning they do a long run and on Sunday morning they hit the roads of Essex on their bikes, this all starts from the Market Car Park in Rayleigh. During the week they have Tuesday night track sessions at the Basildon Sporting Village as well as Monday night swimming sessions at Runnymede pool Castle Point and Thursday night at the Basildon Sporting Village again. I have been speaking to Zena, a member of the club about Triathlon and its growing popularity. It seems as though Triathlon is now becoming the ultimate challenge, even rivalling marathons and half marathons? Why is popularity increasing? More generations of 40+ adults are still enjoying sport. Some may have come from other sports such as athletics or swimming and realise they can still be competitive at triathlon, which celebrates winners from age groups in 5 year gaps. Many people start triathlon just for a one off event but stay because they find it a friendly inclusive sport. We have also had Olympic and world championship success with the likes of the Brownlee brothers and Chrissie Wellington which has increased the popularity too. London 2012 no doubt has had a big impact, especially the success of the Brownlee brothers as you have mentioned. With Rio looming, what can we expect from East Essex Club to get more

youngsters taking an interest and giving it a go? We have regular training sessions for any young people wishing to take part in triathlon and also host a number of events each year including the Go-Tri series, which provides a short, low key taster event at Basildon Sporting Village (for adults and children) and can be entered on the day!
