With the clocks springing forward, we now have lighter evenings. That means summer is on its way! The first holiday of the year is upon us with Easter. If you are going away, we hope you have a great time, and that the sun is shining for you! Please take some time to read the article by our ever present writer Revd Paul Carr on page 26. We also have some new editorial writers this month; Richard Pond with a marketing piece and Adam Adshead from the Cater museum. These are regular articles so please keep checking back for the next instalment. There was a recent post about our Billericay magazine on Facebook. To say we were blown away by all of the positive comments is an understatement! Thank you to everyone who left kind works! So all that is left is to wish you a great Easter From everyone at Around Town Magazines

Leaking Flat Roof! Is Your Roof Secure? The Great British weather can change and strike back at us anytime! Is your flat roof ready to cope? Are you one of 70% of home owners in the UK incorporating a mineral felt flat roof? Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. It is fact we receive more emergency calls after a below zero cold period which is often followed by winds and rain. If you have any doubt why not book a free site survey ASAP.

When a flat roof is replaced there are Part L Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. PLEASE CALL FOR FREE INFORMATION REGARDING THE PART L LAW.

MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION: ALL PROPERTY OWNERS PLEASE BE AWARE

In 1999, High-Tech Roofing first introduced the most advanced flat roof technology to the homeowner. Protan, based in Norway, has a pedigree in the design and manufacture of water- proofing materials dating back to 1939, and producing the first roofing membrane in 1971. Protan is our preferred PVC single-ply flat roofing system and will cope with all climates, millions of square metres are installed here and abroad with a proven

The Solution

THE HOME-OWNER SHOULD ALSO BE MADE AWARE that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old.

track record stretching over four decades. Protan is predominantly an architect-specified roofing system, winning many awards serving the very competitive commercial sector. A High-Tech roof is dimensionally stable and solar reflective, the material is unaffected by climate change and 100% resistant to moss & algae growth. The membrane has a unique anti-slip finish allowing the roof to be walked on and is aesthetically pleasing. As it is a vapour permeable product it will never blister or become brittle and crack. High-Tech will create a 100% storm resistant watertight roof, maintenance free and guaranteed for life never to leak. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR SPRING DISCOUNTS High-Tech have for the first time introduced a Spring Discount. This is due to the mild weather experienced throughout January & February leaving our order books not as strong as we would expect this time of year. All our Roofing products can be discounted to a maximum of 15%. The discount structure will depend on timing and work specification. All discounts will be discussed on an individual basis with our pricing surveyors. There is no obligation to buy.

Marketing for Businesses I have the pleasure to announce that Around Town Magazine has asked me to run a series of marketing tips in this fantastic monthly magazine. Over the next 12 months, I will be bringing you a series of lead generation tips that you can implement into your marketing plan to help you grow your businesses. My name is Richard Pond and I have been working in the marketing industry for over 20 years now. Over that time, I have seen many changes in the way we market our companies including the introduction of email, the internet for mainstream businesses, social media, smartphones and self-shot marketing videos to name just a few. The big question I get asked on a weekly basis is what I should be doing to market my business online. I have been really lucky over the last few years to work closely with some of Billericay’s fantastic businesses both at my training courses and on a 1-2-1 basis.

Over the course of the next year I will be covering a number of subjects within this magazine including: How to create a marketing plan, how to define your ideal client or clients, Facebook for business, using video in your marketing, how to measure everything you do online, email marketing, how to write a killer headline that gets your posts and emails opened and much more. Running a small business isn’t easy you have to wear a number of hats, but with my monthly tips, hopefully, marketing and lead generation will start to become a bit easier. If you have any suggestion on specific things you would also like me to cover then please get in touch with either myself or Around Town Magazines and I will try my hardest to include these in the monthly articles.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Mayflower Rotary is to charter the third Rotary club in Billericay on May 23. It has been Mayflower’s “satellite” over the past year. Now its 19 members led by Lynn Talbot will become The Rotary Club of Billericay Town in their own right recognised throughout the international movement.

They have already raised an incredible £6,000-plus for good causes from a series of events and helped at the town’s Summerfest, Christmas Market and soapbox derby run by Billericay Rotary Club. Like most Rotary clubs worldwide, the new club will be dual gender and will begin with all but two of its members being ladies. All are either in business or professions or recently retired. Meanwhile Mayflower is preparing for their popular annual SummerFest at Sun Corner on July 7. Billericay Town Football Club is to add to the Fest’s many attractions with a penalty shoot out. Want to know about Billericay Mayflower or Billericay Town club and share productive leisure hours with a role in the Billericay community? Contact secretary@mayflowerrotary.org

April Savings Round Up

I

t’s been a busy few weeks in the savings market and at Savings Guru HQ with a host of rate changes, two new banks entering the market and an awards evening! New easy access table toppers As we predicted, Family Building Society withdrew their table topping premium saver account, paying 1.51%. In fairness, it lasted a little longer than we expected. Fortunately, no sooner had it ended, Kent Reliance were launching a 1.50% easy access account joining Marcus and Virgin Money at the top of our best buy tables. While all our best buys are online only account opening, Kent Reliance has launched a 1.40% easy access account that is available through its branch network in the South East and by post. RCI Bank secures UK Banking licence A mainstay of our easy access tables over the past few years has been RCI Bank, owned by French car manufacturer Renault. It has Brexit proofed its business by obtaining a UK banking licence and coming under the protection of the UK’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme, rather than the French equivalent which its savers deposits were previously covered under. Two new banks enter the UK savings market Banks were like buses in the last month. Having only seen the launch of Marcus since 2017, Arbuthnot Direct and Smart Save Bank, owned by Chetwood Financial, joined the market. Arbuthnot launched with competitively priced 3 Year (2.40%) and 5 Year (2.50%) Fixed Rate Bonds. Smart Save Bank launched with a 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond paying 2%, the best outside of the Islamic Banks dominating the top of our one year tables. Unsurprisingly, that rate lasted less than two weeks before being withdrawn. The online application process was impressively simple and easy though, so we look forward to seeing future product launches. Zopa Bank to be next? We don’t expect this flurry of new launches to end

22

anytime soon. Peer to peer lender Zopa obtained a banking licence at the end of 2018 and is in a testing period known as mobilisation. We expect to see Zopa launch fully in the summer and, given the impact it has had on the peer to peer lending market, with over £3bn lent, we anticipate big things. Monzo partners with OakNorth for savings accounts Fintech darling Monzo has partnered with OakNorth to enable the later to provide savings accounts to its 1.6 million current account customers. Monzo had previously launched savings accounts with Investec in November 2019 but these were closed to new customers in February this year. The tie up with OakNorth sees four savings accounts launched: • • • •

Instant savings - 1% 6 Month Fixed Rate Bond -1.36% 9 Month Fixed Rate Bond - 1.46% 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond - 1.53%

There’s also two ISAs – an Instant Savings Cash ISA 1.14% and a 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond ISA 1.38%. The accounts can all be opened and managed via Monzo’s mobile app and come with a £500 minimum opening balance, so are accessible and very easy to use for their customers. However, the convenience comes at a price with OakNorth offering around 0.35% better rates for the same products direct. Monzo customers will also be able to find other providers paying around 0.50% more. This is definitely a step forward for Monzo customers, but we expect that there will be other savings partnerships for their current account holders going forward and their prospective savers will probably be hoping that the rates on offer get closer to the market leaders. Government savings schemes flop With Brexit dominating the political agenda, one piece of news slipped out from the Office of

Budget Responsibility almost uncovered. The budget watchdog announced that the £845m the government expected to be used to top up payments for Lifetime ISA (LISA) savers by 2021 has been halved from £845m to £420m. Similarly, just over 90,000 savers have joined the Help to Save scheme, where the government gives 50p extra for every £1 lower income earners save. This is substantially under the 195,000 forecast. Both schemes have been launched with good intentions but have been poorly executed. LISAs are far too complex and confused with the dual but fundamentally completely different savings objectives of house purchase and retirement. Help to Save is a noble idea but incentives aren’t the reason why the poorest fail to save, lack of money to spare is. British Bank Awards Savings Guru finished runner up in the Consultancy of the Year category of the British Bank Awards, beating global heavyweights including Deloitte, Capco and CapGemini. Congratulations to winners 11:FS and thank you to every one of you who took the time to vote for us. What are the best rates currently? Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross It’s amazing how many people wear a cross as a necklace or an earring and yet have little, or no, Christian faith. The cross was first worn by early Christians to show others they were followers of Jesus and to remind them of His death and the sacrifice He made the cross for their sins. We’ve become so accustomed to crosses worn as jewellery that we are not shocked by the fact that it was actually an instrument of execution! I know … take a deep breath - but that’s exactly what a cross is. Cicero, the Roman philosopher and politician, described crucifixion as: ‘The most cruel and hideous of tortures’. Indeed, it was one of the cruellest forms of execution known to mankind. It was abolished in AD 315 because even the Romans considered it too inhumane. How would you respond if Pandora started producing electric chair earrings; or lethal injection cufflinks or a hangman’s noose necklace? Would you wear one of those? I guess not … and you wouldn’t be best pleased to receive one as a gift either. But why it is that the cross is a symbol of the Christian faith? Why isn’t it a cradle to remind us about the much-loved Christmas story? Or a scroll to remind us of Jesus’ amazing teaching? Or a crown, to remind us of Jesus’ claim to be a King? No - it’s a cross, to remind us of His death. Whilst many people may want to remember Jesus’ life, the Christian remembers His death. The cross reminds us why Jesus died. The hymn writer Isaac Watts puts it this way: When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

www.billericaychurches.org

See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of Nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all! The cross is only wondrous, of course, if Jesus rose from the dead – but that’s what Christian’s believe. The writer and Atheist, Richard Dawkins, wrote: “If the resurrection is not true Christianity becomes null and void.” And for once I agree with him!! Jesus’ death on the cross only makes sense if He rose from the dead and that’s why Easter is such a significant celebration in the Christian Church and why following Jesus is life changing for those who do because it means He was able to deliver on all the promises He made during his life. May I extend an invitation to join with us here at Emmanuel, or any of the great churches in Billericay, as we journey through Holy Week from: the Praise of Palm Sunday; Poignancy of Maundy Thursday; Sorrow of Good Friday; the Fun of the Family Time Easter Egg Hunt on Holy Saturday and the Joy of Celebration on Easter Day. May God’s richest blessing be upon you as you prepare to celebrate all that Easter brings.

than indulging in speculation and second-guessing as to the cumulative effect of future decisions that may or may not be taken by other MPs, and indeed EU officials, I can only vote on the facts as I see them.

John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP For Basildon and Billericay

The Government is doing its best to spook Brexiteers such as myself into supporting the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement. However, rather

Having campaigned to leave the EU, I have done all I can to honour the referendum result, voting against Withdrawal Agreement, against ruling out ‘no deal’ and against extending the Article 50 deadline. The key problem is that Brexit-supporting MPs such as myself are outnumbered by an overwhelmingly remaindominated Parliament which voted to trigger Article 50 and yet is now trying to ignore it. This is unacceptable and would further undermine trust in our

democratic system. Ruling out ‘no deal’ and pushing back our exit date is not keeping faith with the EU referendum result. All MPs now have to make a difficult decision whether to support this flawed deal, or risk the prospect of Brexit being delayed or marginalised further. I respect my colleagues who vote differently, but without substantial improvements, I will vote against the deal when it returns for a third time to the House of Commons. In the absence of an agreement, ‘no deal’ is the default outcome of our votes two years ago to trigger the Article 50 process. This is the promise I made to constituents at the General Election, and I fully intend to keep it.

STREET PASTOR Caring listening helping

Billericay Street Pastors continue to patrol in uniform the High Street area on Friday and Saturday nights. In this last month our volunteers have given 134 hours of time on patrol and even more now as they continue to train both new recuits and experienced volunteers who keep up to date with strategic changes. We have also deployed at Lake Meadows on the days after the horrific attack of the young lady who was taking her child for a walk. We continue to pray for them both, for the police in their investigation and for the community who have had a shock. We have found that people are very resilient and have continued to use the park and it’s amazing facilities. We enjoyed giving reassurance to young families using the play area, to the many hundreds of dog walkers and to the commuters who zig zag the park in their way home.

building relationships with the young people and the staff and hope to continue to support the pastoral work. We have just recruited 5 more volunteers who are undergoing training. Rail Pastors deploy to the Greater Anglia route to offer a listening ear to people who are maybe struggling with life issues. We are on hand to support the rail staff in Suicide interventions and enjoy hundreds of conversations with commuters as they go about their work day.

Not only are we training but we are also preparing for Schools Pastors continue to support Billericay School and several public events including the Soap Box Derby have added in some after school patrols initially around and Summerfest where our volunteers will be happy to the back gate and underpass. We are really enjoying explain personally what we do and why.

Thank You to the community for your continued support. We are on Facebook and Twitter if you want to know more. Billericay@streetpastors.org.uk PLEASE MENTION AROUND TOWN MAGAZINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

Welcome to the first in a series of articles about The Cater Museum. “The what ?” I hear some of you cry ! Yes, we have a small museum in the middle of Billericay’s High Street dedicated to the history of the area and its inhabitants. You may well have walked past it many times but between the entrance to Lauren Cole and that of Lord of London jewellers there’s a mysterious third door: A Doorway into the Past. Welcome to The Cater Museum ! The museum first opened to the public in May 1960. It was established by Alice Cater in honour of her late husband William who was a local antiquarian. Those who know the museum inevitably remember one exhibit: our two-headed lamb. But over the coming months I want to highlight some of the museum’s other objects that tell so many stories about life in a Billericay of a very different era. We’ve the door of a house once owned by Christopher Martin who sailed on the Mayflower; we’ve a sea chest said to have circumnavigated the world twice with Admiral Walton, hero of the Battle of Cape Passaro in 1718; there’s a beautifully decorated cigar case, brought home by a soldier returning from the Peninsular War after fighting the French and we’ve a map of the proposed canal

to Billericay - never built, primarily because Billericay is at the top of a hill ! On July 6th we have an event remembering “Peace Day” in 1919 when Billericay celebrated the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. There’s a wonderful poster on display showing the events that took place almost 100 years ago - including a competition for the smartest presented horse (first prize £1, second prize 15 shillings), a “Marathon Race for servicemen past and present”, a decorated procession of farm vehicles and finishing with a “Comrades of the Great War” sing-song. The museum is entering a new and exciting phase with Katie Wilkie our Curator and some amazing volunteers supported by a Board of Trustees including new Chairman Adam Adshead (founder of the Billericay Community Cinema) and new Vice-Chairman Chris Taft who is Head of Collections at the Postal Museum in London. The Cater Museum is open Monday to Friday between 2pm and 5pm and Saturday between 1pm and 4pm. You can follow us on Twitter @ CaterMuseum, on Facebook catermuseum or find out more in our website catermuseum.org.uk Adam Adshead Chairman, The Cater Museum
