WELCOME
With the clocks going forward the lighter evenings are with us again. There are green shoots to be seen everywhere and the bluebells are out. Let’s hope that the weather continues to improve as we are now in Spring! With Easter coming up later this month, school age children will be on their breaks. This is sometimes made difficult by schools breaking at different times. If you are planning on going away for the Easter break, we hope you have a great time and that the sun is shining for you. This month sees our What’s On pages increasing as we bring you even more 4
news and events that are taking place in the Beaulieu area. Please take the time to look and support these events, if you can. As always, we would like to thank our advertisers and contributors. Their support is helping us to make this magazine grow into a community magazine supporting your community. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the positive comments we have had about this magazine. It is very rewarding knowing how well it is being received.

LOCAL MP
A
Update From The Local MP
fter nearly two years as Chelmsford’s MP I eventually secured a question to the Prime Minister during Question Time. Each week, questions to the Prime Minister are selected on a random basis drawn by a ballot from over 600 MP’s. I chose to use the opportunity to speak out on behalf of Chelmsford’s campaign for increased infrastructure, and especially about our second railway station. Every time I’m out and about in Chelmsford, residents want to discuss the need for improved road and rail links. They understand the need for more homes for local people, but we are all concerned that we need the infrastructure as well. The government has committed a record £5.5 billion to a Housing Infrastructure Fund. Last year two massive schemes for Chelmsford were successful in making it through to the final round for funding. These are for the new station at Beaulieu Park and a North East Bypass which would link the A12 at the Boreham Interchange to the A131 near Great Leighs. These would both help to take traffic away from the centre of Chelmsford. Essex County Council has now submitted its detailed final bid for £218 million from the fund. This has been a massive amount of work by our local Councils and as the City’s MP I will keep fighting for it at every opportunity. There is much concern in our national newspapers about knife crime and people will be very concerned about the recent incident involving a young person in Chelmsford. In Chelmsford and Maldon there were four violent incidents involving knives last year. This is four too many, but it is much less than in many other parts of the UK. Last year 150 additional officers were added to Essex Police and another 240 are coming on board this year. In Chelmsford the police are actively using “Stop and Search” to tackle drug and knife crime. The number of “Stop and Searches” went up from 80 in the last quarter of 2017 to around 500 in the same period last year. This activity has led to the police being able to make significant arrests. Members of Chelmsford police “C shift” team have just won the award for the best
community police response team in the country, and our local “Pubwatch” scheme was recently ranked as number one in the country especially for the work they have been doing to make the city centre safe at night. Please do keep reporting crimes and any intelligence into the police. It makes a very significant difference to their work. I was also very pleased to hear that the Delay Repay 15 minute is going to be introduced on Chelmsford trains from 1 April. Commuters pay a large amount for their train travel and when there are delays they should be properly compensated. First Buses have also announced a series of improvements that will start on April 28. These include new weekday evening services to Chelmer Village, an additional bus to cover the Galleywood, Great Baddow, Springfield to Beaulieu routes and additional stopping services to the Vineyards shops. It is vital that the bus services are reliable, and I hope that performance improves. Many Chelmsford constituents write to me about the environment. I joined Members of Parliament for a recent debate on climate change. In the next thirty years the world will be much more crowded and much warmer. The Global population is expected to reach at least 9 billion, and the population of Nigeria is predicted to be larger than that of Europe and the US put together. How much warmer it becomes depends on the action we all take. The science is very clear, mankind cannot continue to pump more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere without causing permanent and irreversible damage to our planet. The good news is that the UK has cut its greenhouse gas emissions by more than any other developed country, but we are all aware that there remains a great deal of work to do. Thank you to the young apprentices from Chelmsford whom I met during National Apprenticeship Week. They are an inspiration to all!
If you have an issue you would like me to help with, as ever, do not hesitate to get in touch – my email is

ARE YOU BACKING UP YOUR COMPUTER? If you have important data on your computer, be it documents, photos, videos or music, it is a very good idea to back your computer up in case of hard drive failure, theft or malware attack. Your computer will very likely be insured as part of your contents insurance. Computers are replaceable but your data is not. To be considered “backed up”, your important data needs to be stored on at least two separate devices. Ie, your computer and some kind of backup drive. That way if one fails, you can get your data from the other. In some cases you may want to store
10
the backup drive in a separate location to protect from fire risk, especially in the case of businesses. You can back up your data to a local USB flash drive or hard drive using free backup software. Alternatively it is also possible to back up to the “cloud”. For cloud backup you do need a fast Internet connection and there is also a cost for the online storage. If you would like any further help or advice on this or any other IT issue, please call DH Computing on the numbers shown in the advert.

DAN THE VICAR
N
ot long ago a woman stopped me in the street. She appeared from the shadows late in the evening as I walked to my car. She was gaunt and withered, pawing at me in desperation for money. I didn’t have my wallet so I talked with her very briefly before going about my day. Somewhere along the way home it occurred to me that no money, does not equal, no charity. Just because I couldn’t give her cash didn’t mean I couldn’t help her. I could have. I could have at least heard her story. Who was she? Where was she from? Where was she going? I kid myself that I had no time but I had time. All I was doing was going home to
Easter Charity watch Netflix or something. When I think about this encounter I am reminded that charity can unwittingly be reduced to moving funds from one place to another but real charity requires more than dolling out cash to faceless/ nameless domains. Charity is ideally not an isolated act one does for another. It somehow involves relationship. It has mutuality to it. She was a person, with a story. Perhaps she would never have accepted a real offer of help and she may have taken advantage of my kindness so I decided somewhere deep within not to offer it. I stayed distant. Mercifully, God doesn’t do that

with us. In fact, even knowing that many of us would not accept love, God moved heaven and earth to show it anyway. God came and lived among us in the person of Jesus. At Easter we celebrate the real, deep, extraordinary charity of God that doesn’t just throw loose change at the problems of the world but gives His life for them. Easter charity is something I’m still struggling to understand. It’s amazing and challenging and awesome and difficult; to somehow bring life to others, not just give money. Easter charity changes the world. Easter charity means I must face issues using everything at my disposal not just my bank balance.

THE SAVINGS GURU April Savings Round Up
I
t’s been a busy few weeks in the savings market and at Savings Guru HQ with a host of rate changes, two new banks entering the market and an awards evening! New easy access table toppers As we predicted, Family Building Society withdrew their table topping premium saver account, paying 1.51%. In fairness, it lasted a little longer than we expected. Fortunately, no sooner had it ended, Kent Reliance were launching a 1.50% easy access account joining Marcus and Virgin Money at the top of our best buy tables. While all our best buys are online only account opening, Kent Reliance has launched a 1.40% easy access account that is available through its branch network in the South East and by post. RCI Bank secures UK Banking licence A mainstay of our easy access tables over the past few years has been RCI Bank, owned by French car manufacturer Renault. It has Brexit proofed its business by obtaining a UK banking licence and coming under the protection of the UK’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme, rather than the French equivalent which its savers deposits were previously covered under. Two new banks enter the UK savings market Banks were like buses in the last month. Having only seen the launch of Marcus since 2017, Arbuthnot Direct and Smart Save Bank, owned by Chetwood Financial, joined the market. Arbuthnot launched with competitively priced 3 Year (2.40%) and 5 Year (2.50%) Fixed Rate Bonds. Smart Save Bank launched with a 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond paying 2%, the best outside of the Islamic Banks dominating the top of our one year tables. Unsurprisingly, that rate lasted less than two weeks before being withdrawn. The online application process was impressively simple and easy though, so we look forward to seeing future product launches. Zopa Bank to be next? We don’t expect this flurry of new launches to end 14
anytime soon. Peer to peer lender Zopa obtained a banking licence at the end of 2018 and is in a testing period known as mobilisation. We expect to see Zopa launch fully in the summer and, given the impact it has had on the peer to peer lending market, with over £3bn lent, we anticipate big things. Monzo partners with OakNorth for savings accounts Fintech darling Monzo has partnered with OakNorth to enable the later to provide savings accounts to its 1.6 million current account customers. Monzo had previously launched savings accounts with Investec in November 2019 but these were closed to new customers in February this year. The tie up with OakNorth sees four savings accounts launched: • Instant savings - 1% • 6 Month Fixed Rate Bond -1.36% • 9 Month Fixed Rate Bond - 1.46% • 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond - 1.53% There’s also two ISAs – an Instant Savings Cash ISA 1.14% and a 1 Year Fixed Rate Bond ISA 1.38%. The accounts can all be opened and managed via Monzo’s mobile app and come with a £500 minimum opening balance, so are accessible and very easy to use for their customers. However, the convenience comes at a price with OakNorth offering around 0.35% better rates for the same products direct. Monzo customers will also be able to find other providers paying around 0.50% more. This is definitely a step forward for Monzo customers, but we expect that there will be other savings partnerships for their current account holders going forward and their prospective savers will probably be hoping that the rates on offer get closer to the market leaders. Government savings schemes flop With Brexit dominating the political agenda, one piece of news slipped out from the Office of Budget Responsibility almost uncovered. The
APRIL 2019
B eau L ieu budget watchdog announced that the £845m the government expected to be used to top up payments for Lifetime ISA (LISA) savers by 2021 has been halved from £845m to £420m. Similarly, just over 90,000 savers have joined the Help to Save scheme, where the government gives 50p extra for every £1 lower income earners save. This is substantially under the 195,000 forecast. Both schemes have been launched with good intentions but have been poorly executed. LISAs are far too complex and confused with the dual but fundamentally completely different savings objectives of house purchase and retirement. Help to Save is a noble idea but incentives aren’t the reason why the poorest fail to save, lack of money to spare is. British Bank Awards Savings Guru finished runner up in the Consultancy of the Year category of the British Bank Awards, beating global heavyweights including Deloitte, Capco and CapGemini. Congratulations to winners 11:FS and thank you to every one of you who took the time to vote for us. What are the best rates currently? The savings market does move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. At time of print, our best personal savings rates are:

A TRIBE CALLED SWEAT Pearly Whites & Fat Loss
I
’ve got my 2 x year dentist appointment today, and it got me thinking about fitness and fat loss…
the time...yet they’re sure to sign up for an annual transformation challenge and/or detox program? How do you think that works out (no pun intended) in the long run?
Imagine this…
You don’t brush your teeth daily, but you’re sure to get in your two cleanings per year. How do you suppose that’s going to work out for you? Ask any dentist and I’m sure they’ll agree that if you had to choose, it’s better to do your daily work (brush & floss 2-3x/day) than get two major cleanings a year. Now, doing both is clearly ideal because even with the best daily practice you’ll still benefit greatly from that deeper cleaning you can only get at the dentist.
The regular daily/weekly stuff that you do OK with is always going to produce far better results than trying to be “perfect” for 6 weeks here and 21 days there…. Now, if you can do both...you’re in real business! IMPORTANT NOTE: You don’t actually have to be “perfect” during a challenge or detox to be successful. That’s just setting yourself up for failure. Consistency always trumps intensity in the long run. It’s the tortoise and the hare.
So, how does this relate to fitness?
Focus on the things you can do most of the time like working out 2-3x/week, drinking 1.5l of water per day, and taking your supplements.
Well, do you know anyone who’s not so great at getting in their regular workouts 2-3x/week and eating supportively most (doesn’t need to be all) of
That will serve you much better than going all in a couple times per year and then going right back to unsupportive habits the rest of the time…
I’d love to hear back from you… Tell me if you found this to be helpful or if you have a different system that works well for you I’m always game for learning ways to be more productive

THE CRISIS COACH Life Goals Part 1: Destination unknown... Search and Rescue!
A
navigator would know where they want to go, and with a bit of map reading and possibly a couple of corrected wrong turns “please take a U turn at the next available opportunity” they will eventually arrive at their destination. A wanderer would set out, see where he or she ended up, and perhaps it would be a nice adventure but there is a risk it could be a disastrous cliff top type dead end! The same can be said for life decisions, a navigator might know that he wants to work with animals and be interested in medical science, and so decide to be a vet. He would find work experience, train, qualify and eventually he would achieve his goal and become a vet! Easy right!? Yes, if you know where you want to go. It is not so easy if you don’t know where you want to go with your life. Some lucky ones can easily identify what they truly want to do with their lives, the rest of us are the wanderers who travel through life without that critical map or end destination. We hope the journey is pleasant and wait for an epiphany that one day “hey presto!” like magic we will realise what it is we want to do with our life. Unfortunately, this method of finding and achieving our life goals, my fellow wanderers, is as useful as the Ostridge sticking its head in the sand… its an unhelpful waste of time and you will find yourself at a dead end without a map! Where exactly do you want to go? This question is not just for the young who are setting out, it is a relevant question for everyone in all stages of life. Because as we grow, we often change, and perhaps we have wandered around for too long and perhaps today is the day to seize life by the
horns and do something amazing! The beautiful thing about happiness, selffulfilment and identifying what you want to do with your life, is that all the answers are held within you. You do indeed have the answer, all you need to do is find it. Let the search and rescue begin! First you need to unpick who you are, what makes you feel passionate and motivated? Core values are descriptive words that will identify what in life is meaningful to you and what you are passionate about. I’ve given some ideas below, go for any word that defines you and what drives you. Find 7-10 core values that define you the best. Adaptable, Adventurous, Affectionate, Ambitious, Assertive, Attentive, Beauty, Balance, Bravery, Bold, Calm, Caring, Certainty, Change, Cheerful, Clever, Comfort, Community, Compassion, Confidence, Connection, Control, Creative, Daring, Devout, Different, Empathy, Empowering, Energy, Entertainment, Ethical, Exploration, Fairness, Family, Fashion, Flexibility, Friendly, Fun, Generous, Growth, Guidance, Harmony, Independence, Innovative, Inquisitive, Just, Knowledge, Lively, Love, Loyal, Mellow, Meticulous, Nurturing, Outrageous, Passionate, Persuasive, Playful, Relaxation, Risk taking, safety, selfless, sense of humour, spirituality, Tough, Unique, Universal, Victorious, Virtuous, Wise, Youthful, Zen. Once you can identify who you are, the next step is to set the destination by putting your core values into action… and then you too will be a navigator! To be continued.
NLP Coaching helps clients to find out what they really want, to feel positive and empowered, and to turn dreams into reality. 26
