Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Billericay, Ingatestone, Ramsden & Stock and Chris is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

From the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary’s recent statements, it seems very likely that Parliament is soon going to be asked to authorise British air strikes in Syria, the key argument being Daesh forces do not recognise the border between Iraq and Syria. However, I find myself questioning again the strategy and long-term thinking of such a policy. Our military interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan post-2006 and Libya have all exhibited such shortfalls at one level or another. Even in Syria we have in effect taken different positions in this civil war and ruled out options, such
as by excluding the Iranians from negotiations, which might have made a settlement easier in the early days. Meanwhile, it is not obvious what meaningful contribution a small number of RAF aircraft will make, especially since the US and Canadian air forces have already been conducting air strikes in Syria for over a year. In addition, it is generally accepted air strikes alone will not defeat Daesh. Yet there appears little progress when it comes to the provision of ground
forces from neighbouring countries. Furthermore, even if Daesh were defeated, who would take up the reins in Syria? If the Assad Government were able to re-take the territory vacated by Daesh, few in the West would regard this as a favourable outcome. Over a year since Parliament authorised RAF strikes on Daesh in Iraq, our strategy remains vague and confused. Until this changes, I will find it difficult to vote for military action.

All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day: Trick or Treat? Why, you might wonder, when Christians invented Halloween, are so many fearful of the festival? After all, there wouldn’t be a Halloween in the first place if it weren’t for the church. ‘Halloween’ as some of you will know, is a contraction of ‘All Hallows Eve’ the day before All Hallows Day (All Saints Day). The Church has celebrated All Saints Day on November 1 since around 998 AD and celebrates the belief that those who die with genuine Christian faith have nothing to fear from death as they continue their relationship with God beyond the grave. Somewhere down the years the festivities evolved so that on ‘All Hallows Eve’ children began dressing up. In medieval times it was known as ‘A Danse Macabre’ and celebrated victory over the powers of evil and death that Jesus won through his own death on the cross. The Apostle Paul does something similar in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 15:55-56 when he uses this chant: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul uses words to taunt death, viewing it as an enemy that has been vanquished and uses the same kind of mocking tone that football fans use when their team beats their local rivals (Billericay Town vs Canvey Island, perhaps?). In a similar way, those early Hallows Eve festivities were
14
mocking the forces of darkness for having no power over those who put their trust in Jesus. Many people bemoan the commercialisation of our calendar with Halloween now the third biggest grossing festival of the year. Some Christians believe that refusing to open the door to trick-or-treaters or forbidding our children to go to Halloween parties is seen to be an opportunity to testify to Jesus when we are asked why we are not participating. But if we choose to abstain from the festivities, do we lose the opportunity to explain Halloween’s origins or to talk about our own belief about the death of Jesus and challenge some of the more sinister activities associated with Halloween? I say this because the commercialisation of Christmas and Easter has not stopped the church from celebrating their underlying message. And, just as we can explain the birth of Jesus at Christmas, his resurrection at Easter, should we not also take the opportunity of All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day to explain Jesus’ victory over death?
for family members of all ages with crafts, stories, games and a party tea (You’ll be able to watch the Rugby World Cup Final at 4.00 pm, I will be and join us afterwards!). Memorial Service on Sunday 1 November at 3.00 pm (lasts for one hour) at Christ Church, Perry Street. This service reminds us of the peace, hope and comfort that God promises to give us in death as we take the opportunity to remember our dearly departed loved ones. Please contact me if you would like more information on either of these. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name. These significant days in the Church calendar offer an opportunity for Christians to act out their belief in the power of Jesus over death and the grave and, it’s because of this, I invite you to join with us at our: Light Party on Saturday 31 October from 6 to 7.30 pm at Emmanuel Church. This is a fun alternative to Halloween

October is surely one of the best times for walking in our local woodlands. The leaves change from the dull and tired green of late summer to brighter colours. In our local woods, the dominant tree colours are the almost lemony hue of the Sweet Chestnut, the more orange-tint yellow of the Hornbeam and the Oak’s reddish-brown which turns to the hue of dull rust and has leaves that, nowadays, can linger on the tree until December. Whereas the common Sycamore is not spectacular in Autumn, its cousin the Field Maple, has colours that do enhance the woodlands and, in our parks, there is a richer red in naturalised Norway maple or perhaps an exotic import such as the Japanese Maple. On bright still days the colours are highlighted by sometimes blinding golden sunshine.

The leaves are vital to the plants in the summer but in the winter when there is insufficient sunlight for them to photosynthesise, they are a liability so discarded and build up on the ground, giving that distinctive Autumnal smell of damp and decay. In the hedegrows and scrub, the black fruits of elder and bramble dwindle this month, picked by us or eaten by wildlife or left to wrinkle and rot on the stems. These berries are a vital food source for birds and mammals. You can witness a blackbird gorging on the elder but the dormouse, fattening up for hibernation, will feed when out of our sight. The hawthorn berries are bright in the hedgerows and our local thrushes are joined by flocks of Fieldfares and Redwings arriving from Scandavia to enjoy the feast. Fungii sprout up in the grasses and around the bases of trees and on trunks of dead wood. They spread their spores in Autumn and can produce an great variety of colours, especially the bright red agaric fungus and the miscellaneous colours of waxcaps. The woodlands are at times silent, and it seems as if birds are entirely absent, until perhaps you hear outbursts of squarking jays. If you encounter a flock of mixed blue, great and long-tailed tits then suddenly the woodlands are alive with their contact calls as they move and feed through the canopy. The flocks may include a treecreeper on a trunk or a hyper-active flitting goldcrest. I recall being amazed at the numbers of birds in a feeding flock which was revealed when a sparrowhawk passed through the woods, generating an explosion of alarm calls. A guided walk may be the best way of enjoying the woods in Autumn, such as the Essex Wildlife Trust’s 7 Woods Walk from Belfairs in Daws Heath on 4th October or the Fungus Foray at Norsey Wood on 24th October.

Mortgages This is a crucial warning for anyone with a mortgage. Mortgage rates are at historic lows, but the window to take advantage looks to be slamming shut. The Bank of England Governor has said he believes UK interest rates will rise from their sixyear slumber at 0.5% before the end of this year. If that happens, today’s rates will look cheap as chips. So everyone with an outstanding home loan should be checking now to see if they can do better – and possibly lock in at a dirt-cheap rate ahead of possible rises. The potential savings here are huge - here’s a tweet I got from Christopher on the back of warning about this. “Sorted - mymonthly repayments fell from £785 to £533.” So let me run you through the 8 things you need to know. 1. Check your current deal. A mortgage is the biggest expenditure most people have, so I’m always slightly surprised that when asked, not everyone knows their rate and details. Check now that you know… a. The current rate: And monthly repayment and amount outstanding. b. Type: Is it a fix, tracker, discount or SVR (standard variable rate, ie, bog standard bank rate)? c. Deal deadline: If it’s a short-term deal, such as a two-year fix, when does it end? d. Term: How long is it, for example, 25 years, and when it must be fully repaid by. e. Penalties: Are there any penalties if you repay or leave early? f. Your loan-to-value (LTV): The proportion of your home’s current value you are borrowing. As an example, £80,000 on a £100,000 property means an 80% LTV. The lower the LTV, the better deal you can get, so if your home’s increased in value you may gain, even without other changes (both Nationwide.co.uk and Halifax.co.uk have tools showing the rough change in prices in your area). If this is all gooblydegook, my free printed www.mse.me/remortgageguide booklet can take you through it in detail.
2. Benchmark your cheapest deal at speed. Recently we’ve seen two-year fixed deals (for those with low LTVs) plummet to almost one per cent - that’s unthinkably cheap and longer fixes and variable deals are at or near historic lows too. Yet a host of factors affect what your cheapest deal is, the easy route’s using a comparison site. Just plug in your home’s value, the amount you want to borrow and other details and it should list what’s likely to be available to you. Some sites only list deals available to brokers, missing out some lenders, including HSBC, Tesco Bank and First Direct. So it’s worth checking a comparison site that includes direct-only deals. These include my ownmse.me/mortgagebestbuys, andtotallymoney. com’s mortgage tool. 3. Fees can be £1,000s - factors them in. The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact fees have, especially for mortgages under £100,000. This can skew which is cheapest for you. So you should always incorporate the fees – do this by spreading them over the fixed or tracker period (as after you may shift again to another deal). Eg, £1,000 of fees over two years is £1,000 / 24 = £42 a month. To help, the comparison at: www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys does this for you, so you can see the real cost of different mortgages side by side. 4. How much can you save? Now you know your rate and what’s out there, work out the potential savings. I’ve eight tools to home in on the right answer for you atmse. me/mortgagecalc, including help comparing two mortgages and estimating if you should ditch your fix.
5. Can you afford a cheaper mortgage? 15 months ago mortgage affordability checks were introduced to stop people borrowing beyond their means – I believe that’s definitely the right move for those getting new borrowing or extending existing debts. Yet, perversely, most lenders (and from March all lenders) are forced to apply these rules to those trying to switch deal too, leading to some being told “you can’t afford to get a cheaper rate”. This is something I’m lobbying to try and get changed. Yet you need to be aware. Lenders will check you can afford your mortgage if rates hit 6-7%. They also want evidence of income, big bills and expenses, even eating out, so be frugal in the months before applying to make your situation look as good as it can. 6. Should I get a fix or tracker/discount? With a fixed mortgage, the amount you repay is, er, fixed, so it’s like buying an insurance policy against possible rate rises. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – sometimes at the provider’s whim. Currently you only pay a touch more to fix. Predicting future interest rate moves is difficult – though pundits think the general direction’s up, the question’s just how quickly. So instead focus on your finances. The more crucial the security of knowing exactly what you’ll pay, the more you should edge towards fixing - and fixing longer. If a rock-bottom deal’s your driver, edge to short-term trackers if cheaper.
Some phone only brokers likelcplc.co.uk are feefree, just getting commission from lenders - others charge fees like Which.co.uk (£499), but can cover a wider range of products. If you want face-to-face help, then ask friends for local recommendations or useunbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk.
THIS IS A CRUCIAL WARNING FOR ANYONE WITH A MORTGAGE. 8. Is your credit score good enough? These days it isn’t just about getting the best mortgage, but the best that’ll accept you. Credit scoring plays a huge part of that, and managing your credit worthiness months in advance is part of the task. I’ve 36 tips in mywww.mse.me/creditrating guide, but some key ones include a) Ensure you’re on the electoral role, via gov.uk/ register-to-vote b) Never withdraw cash on credit cards. c) Never miss a repayment on anything – even late payments hurt d) Check your credit files at Equifax.co.uk, Experian.co.uk and Callcredit for errors – you have a statutory right to do this for £2 e) Avoid payday loans like the plague (both for your credit score and your financial health). f) Avoid other applications, such as credit cards and contract mobiles, just before applying.
7. Mortgage brokers can help boost acceptance. You can, and often should, use a broker to help you find the right deal. They have info unavailable to consumers, eg, lenders’ credit and affordability criteria. A good broker can ease acceptance by matching you to the right deal - and the mortgage interview’s quicker too. But ask the broker how much using them will cost and if they check all deals available to them, not just a panel of lenders.

RUGBY WORLD CUP World Cup fever has gripped the nation after an enthralling opening game as well as a huge upset caused by Japan over the South Africans. We thought that we would help those people who have been captured and are just starting to tune in to the tournament by showing you the recent interview with three of England’s front row on their opinion on certain things prior to a ball being kicked. Who do you think your toughest opponent will be at the World Cup? Jamie George: I think Wales will be tough. A lot of other people have to travel a long way and based on the recent fixtures I would say they would be the main threat. They’ll be very difficultaand we’ve Australia diffcult nd tthen hen w e’ve ggot ot A ustralia as well. But Wales, I’d say, just because of the rivalry between us. Dan Cole: You’d like it to be in the final. I think every game poses its own unique criteria, if you look at Fiji in the opening game, you don’t want to look past that opening game because Fiji have upset us in previous World Cups. They’re going to be ready and it’s going to be the biggest night of their rugby careers. So, that will be tough. Joe Marler: I think they’ll all be tough games, the England vs Wales and England vs Australia games will both be tough, but I think the Wales game will be ferocious. What is your favourite World Cup moment? JG: 2003, obviously. That’s the boring answer. But I think it was more the journey that 2003 team went on; going in as favourites and then struggling against a couple of the teams, Samoa and then going behind against Wales in the quarter final. To come through and win that game was pretty special. DC: England winning the 2003 World Cup. I was 16 at the time and just watching at home, I was new to rugby, had only been playing for a couple of years but that was definitely the best moment. JM: Obviously ‘03 winning it, seeing the team winning it and then I quite
liked, for comedy in that tournament, when England had too many men on the pitch against Samoa. Also, Jonah Lomu running over Mike Catt. Who is the best player you have ever played with/against on show at the World Cup? JG: The Vunipola brothers probably. Their all round game, both of them, they’re big lads but they have so many contributions in a game and those contributions have such an impact on that game. I’ve not seen anything like that for a long time.
it. I think being there is going to be enough for me.
JM: Mo Fa’asavalu. Unbelievable bloke.
JM: I can’t predict a winner because it’s very tight.
Best ever World Cup performance? DC: As a player it was probably Dusautoir’s effort in the World Cup final last time round against New Zealand. I think what he did was monumental. As a team I’d probably say England in 2003, the fact you go to extra-time against Australia in Australia, I think that’s the best performance with everything stacked against you. JM: Any team that beat Wales. Maybe Samoa in 1991. I was one, I remember it well though. Funniest World Cup moment? JG: I can’t remember exactly which game but Jonny Wilkinson had a kick in front of the posts in 2003 and so everyone had just run back because they knew he was going to get it. I think it might have been against Samoa. And he ended up hitting the post and came back to him, it was 15 on one and didn’t exactly go too well for him. Is there a souvenir you want from the World Cup? JG: The shirt itself I think has got to be the main thing. That would be a hugely proud moment for me if I manage to pull it on for a game. That would be unbelievable. DC: We got given a World Cup cap for taking part (in 2011). I think in Maori culture they have certain gem stones they give out, we got given one of them each. JM: I’ve haven’t really thought about
Winner? JG: You can’t look much further than the home team, can you? DC: Too Diffcult t to o ppredict. redict. W ithout Too Difficult Without being arrogant, I’d back England.
Dark horse? JG: I think a lot of the Pacific Island teams have come a long way recently. I think they’ve got some really strong talent and anything can happen in these World Cups, we’ve seen it in the past. DC: Samoa probably. If you look at the players they’ve got, I know a couple of them from Leicester, and I think a lot of the boys are based in Europe and are very good players. If you look at their results over the last couple of years, they’ve beaten Wales, taken South Africa close, when they get all their players together they have a very good side. JM: Uruguay.... An interesting insight into the tournament, as it unfolds we will see how accurate or perhaps inaccurate our boys were in their assessment.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB The annual Bell Boat race on the river Chelmer on Sunday September 13, this year in aid of BOSP, saw Mayflower Rotary win the competition for the first time. Having won 5 of their 6 races, there was a race off against the Oceans 8 team, who also won 5 of their 6 races, which Mayflower won literally by inches. Mayflower’s only defeat came against Billericay Round Table with the younger service club determined not to be beaten by an older service team. The successful crew were Rotarians: Ellis, Johnson, Taylor, Randall, McEvoy, Roberts and Dewis together with Johnson Jnr. A great time was had by all 7 teams and challenges are already in place for next year’s event. Upcoming Events Oct 3: Swing Dinner & Dance with Diane Moore and Steve Dunnett at Burstead GC. Sold out. Oct 17: Casino evening in aid of Little Havens Hospice. Nov 7: Assisting Round Table with Fireworks at Lake Meadows. Nov 29: Assisting Billericay Town Council with Christmas Lights switch on. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Hi folks, time to share some Lions news. As the nights draw in and the summer ‘heat’ fades in our memories, the Lions are enthusiastically working on their autumn activities. On Saturday, November 14th at Christchurch Hall, we will be holding a ‘Trial by Jury’. You are invited with friends and relatives to be a member of a ‘Jury’ of 8 people per table, trying to deduce which defendant on trial is guilty of the vicious killing of a prominent member of the community. You will be able to question the defendants directly with clues galore to help you, but beware of red herrings. The evening costs £7 per person and you can bring your own drinks and nibbles. Tickets are selling fast, so if you are interested then please contact the number below. As a fund raising event, all profits will go to local charities.
Out in the community the Lions received warm feedback from attendees of the recent Senior Citizens’ Concert. This was appreciated by local folks, many of whom rarely attend social events. Thanks also goes to all of you who helped to make this a success. Our social events continued apace during September and included a quiz walk and meal in Rochester. This was great fun with members combining exercise whilst the teams tried to get their heads around some of the trickier questions. For details of all Lion’s events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
September proved to be a fantastic month! We had a “Survival” evening over at Thriftwood Scout camp, where we attempted to make shelters and “make” fire… Trout cooked over an open fire made a good dinner, and there were also blindfolded bushtucker trials which proved amusing for those watching! We also joined forces with Witham Round Table to take part in the Rotary Club Bell Boat Race on the Chelmer and came a creditable 4th out of 7 teams, also taking the accolade of being the only team to beat the eventual winners, moral victors of the event then! We also kept everyone entertained by turning up in fancy dress as Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Haddock, Captain Scarlet, a Pirate Captain and an Officer (who attempted to be a Gentleman) amongst others! October is looking like a busy month, not only with activities, but also with final preparations for the Annual Billericay Fireworks Display on Saturday 7th November, keep your eyes peeled in the local press, social media and the internet for further details of how to book your tickets. Are you looking for something new to do in October? •Wednesday 14th October: Water Polo. Having seen first-hand the varying degrees of swimming ability amongst our motley crew, we’re not sure if it’ll look like water polo, or just a bunch of blokes flapping about in the water! •Wednesday 21st October: Monthly Muster. Here we will be looking at our final preparations for the Fireworks Display. Beer, pizza and good company will also be part of the evening! These aren’t the only events we’ll be involved in during October, so if you’re an active and adventurous guy aged 18-45 who wants to get out and DO MORE, come and try us out! Get in touch by emailing us at domore@billericayroundtable.co.uk or contact us via Facebook!

PLOT
Benefits of Garlic As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.
October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.
and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.
If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests,
