Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Rayleigh and Chris is finding that his approach
is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Constable Landscapes Ltd WE CAN TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A PICTURE
For all your driveway and patio requirements,
October is surely one of the best times for walking in our local woodlands. The leaves change from the dull and tired green of late summer to brighter colours. In our local woods, the dominant tree colours are the almost lemony hue of the Sweet Chestnut, the more orange-tint yellow of the Hornbeam and the Oak’s reddish-brown which turns to the hue of dull rust and has leaves that, nowadays, can linger on the tree until December. Whereas the common Sycamore is not spectacular in Autumn, its cousin the Field Maple, has colours that do enhance the woodlands and, in our parks, there is a richer red in naturalised Norway maple or perhaps an exotic import such as the Japanese Maple. On bright still days the colours are highlighted by sometimes blinding golden sunshine.

The leaves are vital to the plants in the summer but in the winter when there is insufficient sunlight for them to photosynthesise, they are a liability so discarded and build up on the ground, giving that distinctive Autumnal smell of damp and decay. In the hedegrows and scrub, the black fruits of elder and bramble dwindle this month, picked by us or eaten by wildlife or left to wrinkle and rot on the stems. These berries are a vital food source for birds and mammals. You can witness a blackbird gorging on the elder but the dormouse, fattening up for hibernation, will feed when out of our sight. The hawthorn berries are bright in the hedgerows and our local thrushes are joined by flocks of Fieldfares and Redwings arriving from Scandavia to enjoy the feast. Fungii sprout up in the grasses and around the bases of trees and on trunks of dead wood. They spread their spores in Autumn and can produce an great variety of colours, especially the bright red agaric fungus and the miscellaneous colours of waxcaps.

The woodlands are at times silent, and it seems as if birds are entirely absent, until perhaps you hear outbursts of squarking jays. If you encounter a flock of mixed blue, great and long-tailed tits then suddenly the woodlands are alive with their contact calls as they move and feed through the canopy. The flocks may include a treecreeper on a trunk or a hyper-active flitting goldcrest. I recall being amazed at the numbers of birds in a feeding flock which was revealed when a sparrowhawk passed through the woods, generating an explosion of alarm calls. A guided walk may be the best way of enjoying the woods in Autumn, such as the Essex Wildlife Trust’s 7 Woods Walk from Belfairs in Daws Heath on 4th October or the Fungus Foray at Norsey Wood on 24th October.

Mortgages This is a crucial warning for anyone with a mortgage. Mortgage rates are at historic lows, but the window to take advantage looks to be slamming shut. The Bank of England Governor has said he believes UK interest rates will rise from their sixyear slumber at 0.5% before the end of this year. If that happens, today’s rates will look cheap as chips. So everyone with an outstanding home loan should be checking now to see if they can do better – and possibly lock in at a dirt-cheap rate ahead of possible rises. The potential savings here are huge - here’s a tweet I got from Christopher on the back of warning about this. “Sorted - mymonthly repayments fell from £785 to £533.” So let me run you through the 8 things you need to know. 1. Check your current deal. A mortgage is the biggest expenditure most people have, so I’m always slightly surprised that when asked, not everyone knows their rate and details. Check now that you know… a. The current rate: And monthly repayment and amount outstanding. b. Type: Is it a fix, tracker, discount or SVR (standard variable rate, ie, bog standard bank rate)? c. Deal deadline: If it’s a short-term deal, such as a two-year fix, when does it end? d. Term: How long is it, for example, 25 years, and when it must be fully repaid by. e. Penalties: Are there any penalties if you repay or leave early? f. Your loan-to-value (LTV): The proportion of your home’s current value you are borrowing. As an example, £80,000 on a £100,000 property means an 80% LTV. The lower the LTV, the better deal you can get, so if your home’s increased in value you may gain, even without other changes (both Nationwide.co.uk and Halifax.co.uk have tools showing the rough change in prices in your area). If this is all gooblydegook, my free printed www.mse.me/remortgageguide booklet can take you through it in detail.
2. Benchmark your cheapest deal at speed. Recently we’ve seen two-year fixed deals (for those with low LTVs) plummet to almost one per cent - that’s unthinkably cheap and longer fixes and variable deals are at or near historic lows too. Yet a host of factors affect what your cheapest deal is, the easy route’s using a comparison site. Just plug in your home’s value, the amount you want to borrow and other details and it should list what’s likely to be available to you. Some sites only list deals available to brokers, missing out some lenders, including HSBC, Tesco Bank and First Direct. So it’s worth checking a comparison site that includes direct-only deals. These include my ownmse.me/mortgagebestbuys, andtotallymoney. com’s mortgage tool. 3. Fees can be £1,000s - factors them in. The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact fees have, especially for mortgages under £100,000. This can skew which is cheapest for you. So you should always incorporate the fees – do this by spreading them over the fixed or tracker period (as after you may shift again to another deal). Eg, £1,000 of fees over two years is £1,000 / 24 = £42 a month. To help, the comparison at: www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys does this for you, so you can see the real cost of different mortgages side by side. 4. How much can you save? Now you know your rate and what’s out there, work out the potential savings. I’ve eight tools to home in on the right answer for you atmse. me/mortgagecalc, including help comparing two mortgages and estimating if you should ditch your fix.
5. Can you afford a cheaper mortgage? 15 months ago mortgage affordability checks were introduced to stop people borrowing beyond their means – I believe that’s definitely the right move for those getting new borrowing or extending existing debts. Yet, perversely, most lenders (and from March all lenders) are forced to apply these rules to those trying to switch deal too, leading to some being told “you can’t afford to get a cheaper rate”. This is something I’m lobbying to try and get changed. Yet you need to be aware. Lenders will check you can afford your mortgage if rates hit 6-7%. They also want evidence of income, big bills and expenses, even eating out, so be frugal in the months before applying to make your situation look as good as it can. 6. Should I get a fix or tracker/discount? With a fixed mortgage, the amount you repay is, er, fixed, so it’s like buying an insurance policy against possible rate rises. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – sometimes at the provider’s whim. Currently you only pay a touch more to fix. Predicting future interest rate moves is difficult – though pundits think the general direction’s up, the question’s just how quickly. So instead focus on your finances. The more crucial the security of knowing exactly what you’ll pay, the more you should edge towards fixing - and fixing longer. If a rock-bottom deal’s your driver, edge to short-term trackers if cheaper. 7. Mortgage brokers can help boost acceptance. You can, and often should, use a broker to help you find the right deal. They have info unavailable to consumers, eg, lenders’ credit and affordability criteria. A good broker can ease acceptance by matching you to the right deal - and the mortgage interview’s quicker too. But ask the broker how much using them will cost and if they check all deals available to them, not just a panel of lenders.
Some phone only brokers likelcplc.co.uk are feefree, just getting commission from lenders - others charge fees like Which.co.uk (£499), but can cover a wider range of products. If you want face-to-face help, then ask friends for local recommendations or useunbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk.
THIS IS A CRUCIAL WARNING FOR ANYONE WITH A MORTGAGE. 8. Is your credit score good enough? These days it isn’t just about getting the best mortgage, but the best that’ll accept you. Credit scoring plays a huge part of that, and managing your credit worthiness months in advance is part of the task. I’ve 36 tips in mywww.mse.me/creditrating guide, but some key ones include a) Ensure you’re on the electoral role, via gov.uk/ register-to-vote b) Never withdraw cash on credit cards. c) Never miss a repayment on anything – even late payments hurt d) Check your credit files at Equifax.co.uk, Experian.co.uk and Callcredit for errors – you have a statutory right to do this for £2 e) Avoid payday loans like the plague (both for your credit score and your financial health). f) Avoid other applications, such as credit cards and contract mobiles, just before applying.

ROTARY CLUB OF RAYLEIGH MILL As the schools have now gone back to school after the summer holidays, it is the time for one of our annual events. For a number of years our club has given a copy of Usborne’s Illustrated English Dictionary to every child in the top year of primary school (year 6) in the area. Initially this was only for Rayleigh schools but it was so well received that we have extended this to Hockley and Hullbridge schools as well. Our club members find it very rewarding to visit the schools and to be able to give out these dictionaries directly to each child. So, if you have a child in this age group, be prepared to be quizzed on some of the more obscure words on which they will probably try to catch you out! Our website and Facebook page can also help you see what else we do. www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubsID=1797 or put ‘Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill’ into Facebook. RUGBY WORLD CUP World Cup fever has gripped the nation after an enthralling opening game as well as a huge upset caused by Japan over the South Africans. We thought that we would help those people who have been captured and are just starting to tune in to the tournament by showing you the recent interview with three of England’s front row on their opinion on certain things prior to a ball being kicked. Who do you think your toughest opponent will be at the World Cup? Jamie George: I think Wales will be tough. A lot of other people have to travel a long way and based on the recent fixtures I would say they would be the main threat. They’ll be very difficultaand we’ve Australia diffcult nd tthen hen w e’ve ggot ot A ustralia as well. But Wales, I’d say, just because of the rivalry between us. Dan Cole: You’d like it to be in the final. I think every game poses its own unique criteria, if you look at Fiji in the opening game, you don’t want to look past that opening game because Fiji have upset us in previous World Cups. They’re going to be ready and it’s going to be the biggest night of their rugby careers. So, that will be tough. Joe Marler: I think they’ll all be tough games, the England vs Wales and England vs Australia games will both be tough, but I think the Wales game will be ferocious. What is your favourite World Cup moment? JG: 2003, obviously. That’s the boring answer. But I think it was more the journey that 2003 team went on; going in as favourites and then struggling against a couple of the teams, Samoa and then going behind against Wales in the quarter final. To come through and win that game was pretty special. DC: England winning the 2003 World Cup. I was 16 at the time and just watching at home, I was new to rugby, had only been playing for a couple of years but that was definitely the best moment. JM: Obviously ‘03 winning it, seeing the team winning it and then I quite
liked, for comedy in that tournament, when England had too many men on the pitch against Samoa. Also, Jonah Lomu running over Mike Catt. Who is the best player you have ever played with/against on show at the World Cup? JG: The Vunipola brothers probably. Their all round game, both of them, they’re big lads but they have so many contributions in a game and those contributions have such an impact on that game. I’ve not seen anything like that for a long time.
it. I think being there is going to be enough for me.
JM: Mo Fa’asavalu. Unbelievable bloke.
JM: I can’t predict a winner because it’s very tight.
Best ever World Cup performance? DC: As a player it was probably Dusautoir’s effort in the World Cup final last time round against New Zealand. I think what he did was monumental. As a team I’d probably say England in 2003, the fact you go to extra-time against Australia in Australia, I think that’s the best performance with everything stacked against you. JM: Any team that beat Wales. Maybe Samoa in 1991. I was one, I remember it well though. Funniest World Cup moment? JG: I can’t remember exactly which game but Jonny Wilkinson had a kick in front of the posts in 2003 and so everyone had just run back because they knew he was going to get it. I think it might have been against Samoa. And he ended up hitting the post and came back to him, it was 15 on one and didn’t exactly go too well for him. Is there a souvenir you want from the World Cup? JG: The shirt itself I think has got to be the main thing. That would be a hugely proud moment for me if I manage to pull it on for a game. That would be unbelievable. DC: We got given a World Cup cap for taking part (in 2011). I think in Maori culture they have certain gem stones they give out, we got given one of them each. JM: I’ve haven’t really thought about
Winner? JG: You can’t look much further than the home team, can you? DC: Too Diffcult t to o ppredict. redict. W ithout Too Difficult Without being arrogant, I’d back England.
Dark horse? JG: I think a lot of the Pacific Island teams have come a long way recently. I think they’ve got some really strong talent and anything can happen in these World Cups, we’ve seen it in the past. DC: Samoa probably. If you look at the players they’ve got, I know a couple of them from Leicester, and I think a lot of the boys are based in Europe and are very good players. If you look at their results over the last couple of years, they’ve beaten Wales, taken South Africa close, when they get all their players together they have a very good side. JM: Uruguay.... An interesting insight into the tournament, as it unfolds we will see how accurate or perhaps inaccurate our boys were in their assessment.

on your
PLOT
Benefits of Garlic As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots Japanese onions.
and
Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.

October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.
and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.
If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests,

Harvest Thanksgiving… Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the Harvest season on 1 August and was called Lammas, meaning ‘Loaf Mass’. Farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a special service of Holy Communion, thanking God for the harvest. At the start of the harvest, communities would appoint a strong and respected man of the village as their ‘Lord of the Harvest’. He would be responsible for negotiating the harvest wages and organising the fieldworkers. The end of the harvest was celebrated with a big meal called a Harvest Supper, eaten on Michaelmas Day. The ‘Lord of the Harvest’ sat at the head of the table. A goose stuffed with apples was eaten along with a variety of vegetables. Goose Fairs were and still are held in some English
towns at this time of year. The tradition of celebrating Harvest Festival in churches as we know it today began in 1843, when the Reverend Robert Hawker invited parishioners to a special thanksgiving service for the harvest at his church at Morwenstow in Cornwall. Victorian hymns such as “We plough the fields and scatter”, “Come ye thankful people, come” and “All things bright and beautiful” helped popularise his idea of harvest festival and spread the annual custom of decorating churches with homegrown produce for the Harvest Festival service. Harvest is an important time of thanksgiving for God’s creation and all that He provides for us and at this time of year we find ourselves being brought back to think more deeply about our dependence on God for all that we have... In the Bible, in the Old Testament scriptures, the people of Israel were given Manna to eat in the desert, which God had provided for them. In the New Testament Jesus performed several miracles, which provided food for the people. At these times Jesus gave thanks, recognising his heavenly Father as the source of that food. Even though we don’t have far to go to the shops to purchase what we need, it’s important that we
acknowledge God as our provider, especially trusting him for our food. As we do so we recognise that there are many people in our local communities and the world who have little or not enough food. The Bible instructs us to feed and bring aid to those who are hungry. But what can we do to help? How can we share more? Locally, we can respond to the local Rayleigh Christian Churches initiative to collect and distribute ‘crisis food packs’ to those who are in real hardship and cannot always afford to purchase essential food items for themselves or their families. Sharing some of our money can provide people who live in poorer and developing countries with the seeds, tools and resources to grow more and better food. We can support Aid Agencies, like Tearfund, Christian Aid or Oxfam, to name but a few. We could also buy Fairtrade products and help get a fairer deal for the people who grow them. We’re not to do this to impress God, but in response to our desire to see the goodness of his provision shared locally and further afield. To seize an opportunity to acknowledge God as our provider and bless others… Yours in the love of Jesus, The Revd Canon Mike Lodge Team Rector Parish of Rayleigh Parish Office 01268 742151 info@parishofrayleigh.org.uk www.parishofrayleigh.org.uk
