Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Upminster and Cranham & Chris is finding that

his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of

people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and

Solar As summer’s rays have faded, the 550,000 Brits with solar panels will stay smiling. Solar panels aren’t just an environmental boon, they cut your electricity bills and pay you for generating energy. However, the amount you can earn from them will likely soon drop again, so if you’re mulling it, it’s worth deciding whether it’s right for you soon. Let me take you through it… How solar panels work “Solar power? Hang on, we don’t live in California!” may be your first thought. Yet it’s not about the heat, it’s about daylight, so they still generate some electricity on gloomy days – vital in a country with weather as dull as eating rice cakes while waiting in for a delivery. There are actually two types of panels: thermal which just heat the water, and photovoltaic (PV) which generate electricity, and it’s these that all the fuss is about, though you’ll usually need a reasonable sized, unshaded roof, facing south-ish. How solar panels make you money Financially, there are two reasons to do this: ● You save on electricity bills. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates a typical family can knock around £100/year off their bills, as it cuts the amount of electricity you need to buy. This depends on system size, location, whether you’re at home during the day and other factors. ● You get paid for generating. You also get paid a ‘feed-in tariff’ for ALL the energy you generate. Crucially, that’s even if you’re the one using the energy, which once big home storage batteries become commonplace will be even better. The amount you get depends on your system’s size, but EST estimates typical payments of £500 a year (tax-free). In June the rate dropped from 13.3p/kWh to 12.9p/ kWh (in contrast, you pay 9p-13p/kWh for the electricity you use). Yet once panels are installed, the government has said the rate is fixed for 20 years and rises with inflation, so signing up sooner pays more.

Does buying solar panels still add up? Back in the day, solar panels were a no-brainer. When the Government launched the feed-in scheme, people typically got a gobsmacking £1,100+ per year in payments, not taking into account electricity savings. Then again, a typical system cost £12,000. Yet now while you earn less, it also costs far less with the price coming down to £5,000-£8,000. For a full detailed analysis and more help, go towww.mse.me/solar, but in a flash... Here’s some maths based on a typical house in Manchester with a typical 4kWp system: - Cost of panels: £6,500 - Annual generation payment: £515 - Annual bill savings: £120 - Total: £635 - Break even estimate: 10 years - Profit at 20 years: £6,200. So with savings rates so low, for someone with a bundle of cash these are a good option to look at. And for some they can pay back even sooner. The key need-to-knows To see whether solar panels are worth it for you and whether you can get them, there are some important need-to-knows: -You need a south-facing roof: Panels need to be on a south-ish facing roof, which isn’t usually shaded. -You need a grade D Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): An EPC rates a building on its energy efficiency from A - highly efficient - to G. If you haven’t got grade D or above you get a lower feed-in tariff making it not worth it for most. Go towww.gov.uk/find-an-energy-assessor to find an accredited assessor. -You can still switch supplier: Don’t think this locks you into your energy provider. Your energy supplier doesn’t need to be the same supplier as the one that pays your feed-in tariff, so you’re free to switch. And with many people already overpaying by £250 a year that’s definitely worth doing – do

a full comparison via mywww.cheapenergyclub. co.uk or any Ofgem.gov.uk confidence code site. -The further south you live, the more you can make: The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could earn £720/year in London, £635 in Manchester and £595 in Edinburgh – as the south gets more daylight. To predict the likely return for your home use the calculator atwww. energysavingtrust.org.uk/solar. -Planning permission isn’t usually needed: The big exception is if you’ve a flat roof, your property’s listed or it’s in a conservation area – you may need to get approval from your council’s building team so check with your local authority. -Ensure your fitter’s a member of Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

the

You can check at: www.microgenerationcertification.org Aren’t they an eyesore? Will it impact the value of my house? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people worry that ugly panels plastered all over their roof and the fact that you’re tied in to a contract that remains with the property once you’ve left could push the price of their house down or put off buyers. And the aesthetics are worth considering, though there are ways to fit panels more discretely. Equally, a more efficient home generating its own energy and paying a feed-in tariff could attract buyers. If you may one day sell the property, I wouldn’t let it put you off. If you’re selling soon, it’s unlikely to be worth doing as you won’t have time to recoup the amount you shell out and it’s unlikely to add a similar amount to your house value. Don’t some firms advertise free solar panels? Some companies offer to fit panels free – but do that and they keep the bigger feed-in tariff payments. You just get the £100ish electricity savings, though prices are predicted to rise massively over 20 years. The firms also maintain the panels and pay for insurance. Yet you may not be able to buy out your contract, so bear this in mind – especially if you’re likely to

move house – as this could be very unattractive to a future purchaser. I’ve full reviews of the free solar providers atwww.mse.me/freesolar. New tool to trick Amazon into giving you free delivery The giant e-retailer used to give free delivery on its goods (not its third party Marketplace sellers) if you spent £10, but in May it increased that to £20. Delivery costs anything from £1.50 to £6, but a new tool (developed by a very clever chap called Adam who used to work for me), SuperSaverDelivery. co.uk scours Amazon for filler items. For example, a £19.72 hairdryer comes with a £6.01 delivery charge so £25.74 total. But the tool shows how you can add a 33p Snickers bar so you’d only pay £20.05.

DON’T THINK THIS LOCKS YOU INTO YOUR ENERGY PROVIDER. Turn your smartphone into a free holiday sat-nav If it’s got GPS, you can convert it into a free sat-nav for 28 countries without using any pricey data overseas. Just download the maps before you go –Navmii.com is a free app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. Once you’ve downloaded it to your phone, it doesn’t need any internet data to find routes, search, or access its maps via GPS, as these are stored offline in your phone.

on your

PLOT

Benefits of Garlic As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots Japanese onions.

and

Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.

18

October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.

and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests,

RUGBY On the 18th September, Rugby will take centre stage as the World Cup is here, in England, for the first time! In the wake of London 2012 and after numerous failed football World Cup bids, we really should be making a song and dance of the most competitive tournament out there at the moment. Nobody has retained the Rugby World Cup as of yet and with at least 7 teams in with a realistic chance of winning, we are in for a treat, whether it be for those lucky people with tickets or those who will be tuning in on television. Johnny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson and co brought home the trophy in 2003 and since being the nearly men 4 years later when they finished runners up, we as a nation, have been waiting to cheer on a team with real prospects, and it is our duty as the host nation to help the team gather momentum. I personally, love to see global sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup gripping an audience and not only forcing them to watch it, but partake in it too. Most professional sports people become who they are from seeing their heroes on the television or even live in a stadium. I am hoping the Rugby World Cup will encourage people of all ages to grab a ball and either give it a go or pick it back up again.

teenage years. I spoke with Martyn Farrow who is the Secretary of the Rugby Club about Rugby on a global and local level. I wanted to get a local opinion of Rugby as a national sport as well seeing what is happening over the next two months while the World Cup is on-going. 12 years ago England lifted the trophy and now we are hosting, did you see new blood joining the club as a result of the famous victory and do you expect RWC England 2015 having the same affect? There is always a peak of interest for all sport after any major sporting event and we hope that once a child can see the pleasure of playing rugby we have them hooked for life. Rugby is played in schools and along with Football and Netball, I expect it is in the top 3 most played sports in the country as part of the curriculum. However, on a weekend, why is it, in your opinion, that youth football especially, is dominant? Is it the ‘not for the faint hearted’ stigma? Or are too many kids focusing on the pound signs that come with football at the top level?

Leading the RWC party locally is the Upminster Rugby Club. You will be pleased to know they are opening their doors to the public to watch games at the long standing Rugby club as opposed to just another pub.

Alas it is not always just the child whos focus is misdirected, but rugby used to suffer from a perception that it was not for all, elitist but this could not be further from the truth rugby has to be one of the most inclusive team games that there is and once tried the camaraderie experienced it can be enduring.

Upminster Rugby Club has been ever present since the 1960s and they are bigger now than they have ever been boasting 3 senior sides, a vets team, a women’s team as well as youth sides from as young as 5 to

I wanted to also grab your opinion on the type of players that join a youth rugby team, I expect you are littered with players that are “built” for rugby (if you know what I mean). I have learned that

technique and pace is just as important as strength and power, for example the French seem to have a different way of playing the game. Do you feel schools need to focus on these elements more? And what can clubs like Upminster RFC do to encourage different types of players coming through, by that I mean short, small, skinny, tall, stocky etc? It is sad that once again it is a perception that all rugby players have to be “built” the same way. Rugby is for everyone and there is a place for everyone within it, regardless of build, race or gender. Every child or new adult player develops at their own individual pace and we encourage this individuality and look to nurture the differences until a time when from just the look on players faces at game end you can see their enjoyment. See below their website, check it out for latest result, fixtures and upcoming events. w w w. p i t c h e ro . c o m / c l u b s / upminsterrugbyclub
