UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

In November 2017 Studio 360 Fitness Limited, located on Radford Way in Billericay, was purchased by two local businessmen, Mark Nokes and Stevie Wood and since then the gym facility has gone from strength to strength. Mark and Stevie have invested in the club, bringing in pieces of state of the art cardio machines, plate loaded machines and free weights, not to mention revolutionising the Indoor Cycling Studio – more on that next month! Mark and Stevie’s vision for Studio 360 Fitness is for it to

secure it’s niche in Billericay as a friendly, well equipped gym offering premier group exercise classes along side top notch customer service. They are Billericay residents wanting to provide a first class facility for the Billericay community. In a world of budget, staff less gyms with keypad access, Studio 360 Fitness is a breath of fresh air if you are after a more personal approach. Highly trained staff will take time to learn your name and chat to you about your health and fitness goals, plus appointments with the gym staff are included in membership, so you can get advice on training, nutrition and how to achieve your goals. Studio 360 Fitness understands people want choices when it comes to gym memberships, so they offer a variety of options from pay as you go sessions and classes to monthly and yearly membership, which include over 55 classes per week. No matter what your health and fitness goals are - fat loss, strength training, recovering from an injury or just keeping active – Studio 360 Fitness has something you will love! Why not use the FREE 7 day membership pass below to come and give them a try.

BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB

The Soapbox Derby returned to Billericay on May 7, 2018. Following the success of the 2016 and 2017 events - we did it all again!

At Billericay’s Summerfest on July 9, 2017, President Peter Greene announced that we’d do it all again. Following a unanimous decision at the club’s Business meeting, and after months of hard work, the Soapbox Derby returned to Billericay in May 2018. A fantastic success for the club - the weight of unsolicited positive comments on Facebook, Twitter and email, and direct approaches by the public, was again overwhelming. Numbers are still coming in but we had many more spectators than in 2017!

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB

Fresh from helping Rotary with their excellent Soap Box Derby, Lions are gearing up for 2 more events. On the 16th of June, we will be at the Billericay Volunteer Network day at the Library. Please pop in and see what Lions and all the other local volunteers do. You might find something you would like to help with. And then from Friday 22nd June until Sunday 24th June, there is the 8th annual Billericay Beer Festival. This year’s event will be at Hannakins Farm Community Centre (NOTE - not just ‘Hannakins Farm’ as Google will direct people to the wrong place!) A big thank you to West Billericay Community Association for their help.

There will be food available and the best time to bring young children is Sunday Lunchtime/ Afternoon when Harry’s Day will be joining us and we will have children’s’ games. There will be no children’s entertainment at other sessions. For updates, including the beer and cider lists as soon as they are available, please visit http://billericaylions.com/ billericaybeerfestival/ For details of Lions events and tickets, or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com

Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable. co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. We are a registered charity and have been able to help many local people over the years and we want to continue so – please check out the request form here: www. billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding

directly affect our everyday lives on important matters such as bin collections and repairing potholes, but also on the ‘big’ issues of schools, local healthcare, planning and council tax.

John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP For Basildon and Billericay

Council Elections Local elections are always important milestones for our communities, electing representatives whose decisions

I would like to thank all candidates who stood in the elections – democracy only works when people put themselves forward to represent and serve their communities, and all who did so deserve our appreciation. Our thanks also go to all the activists who similarly lent their time and efforts to help make this all possible. As a Conservative, after the disappointing results in 2014, when UKIP had a surge in support and displaced a number of Councillors, it is good to win back control of Basildon Council.

Project2_Layout 1 01/12/2015 12:14 Page 1

The Labour/UKIP-led alliance suffered under the weight of its own internal contradictions, and I look forward to Conservative Councillors being in control again and working hard on behalf of their constituents. There is much to do. Brexit The Prime Minister is right to maintain that we must leave both the Single Market and all forms of the Customs Union – this will return control of our laws, money, trade, and borders to Westminster, and anything less will not be in keeping with the votes of the over 17 million people who voted for Brexit. The Government must confront headlong the votes in the House of Lords which throw this into doubt, and in this will have my full support.

FaNs readily sent their encouragement and information over to BARK. They had hung a washing line display full of wishes in local supermarkets so that members of the public could make a positive difference to older people in the community while they are out shopping! The wishes were gathered from senior citizens who may live in a care home or may not have much contact with a community network. Pegged to the lines are cardboard garments upon which the individual wishes from senior citizens were attached.

The idea originated from FaNs (Care Home Friends and Neighbours) which is a small and friendly charity based in Essex with a specific focus on care homes. The first BARK wishing line wishes were collected at one of the tea dances and at a visit to a housing complex. Wishes are encouraged from any older person for an experience that they are unable to fulfil themselves and require a BARK to make it happen! St John’s School was founded in 1928, 90 years ago, by Walter Higby, an Oxford Scholar who named the school after St John’s College in Oxford, which he attended from 1921 to 1924. Today the school is owned by Mrs Joanne Osen. Mrs Osen’s parents, Shirley and Monty Green bought the school in 1982, whilst Mrs Osen was still at university studying for her law degree. After spending some time as a Company/Commercial Lawyer, Mrs Osen joined the family organisation as Bursar/Principal, gradually taking on a greater role in the running of St John’s School. The School remains a family concern with Mr Osen taking an active part in the organisation of new building projects. The Osen family look forward to the future, further building on its history and the School going from strength to strength. St. John’s School has a unique magical atmosphere where learning, creativity and success is enjoyed by everyone. Today, St John’s

is renowned for its caring and personalised approach to education. The school continues to go from strength to strength with recent successes including newly refurbished Pre Reception rooms for 2 to 4 year olds and new Science labs for Senior pupils. Celebrating its 90 year anniversary in the academic year of 2017/18, St. John’s continues to be proud to have educated thousands of children who are confident, successful and who genuinely make a positive contribution to society when they leave. Alumni of St John’s are warmly invited to attend the 90th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday 30th June from 2pm to 4pm. The afternoon will be the ideal opportunity for ex pupils to return to St John’s and to share happy memories whilst celebrating 90 years of independent education. Please email reunion2018@stjohnsschool.net to reserve your place.

hn Lennon seem to be everywhere this time of year: “So this is Christmas ne?” I’d like to change this slightly: “So this is Christmas and what will rate that Jesus was born to be our Saviour? It is, after all, what makes ating and, just like those amazing events in the summer, it can be life but only if you make the time to enjoy the celebration.

a nation with many social and cultural differences, of the In local Church Services over the Christmas period.

football is a universal religion which acts as a bridge between individuals and communities. Football, almost more than anything else, defines who we are as country. It is oneToy of the few neutral subjects (along 2nd December - ‘Annual Service’ at 10.30am with the weather) that we can use to open up a December - ‘Carol Service by Candlelight’ at me, 7.00pm conversation with a total stranger! For I’m more than disappointed that Sunderland suffered the 19th December - ‘Lunchtime Carol Service’have at 12.30pm athumiliation Saint Maryof Magdalen Church back-to-back relegations and now find LeagueNativity’ One. As at Victor Meldrew famously ay 23rdthemselves December in - ‘Family 10.30am remarked: “I don’t believe it!” A consolation this season ristmashas Eve - ‘Christingle Service’ at 4.00pm been to enjoy the incredible achievements of our very own treble winning BTFC which has helped to ‘Communion by Candlelight’ at 11.15pm the (considerable) pain I feel! Theease first Communion of Christmas.

stmas Day - ‘Family Communion’ at 10.00am

The most famous footballer in the world is still Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele - 47 years after he retired from playing. Pele scored an amazing 1281 goals in 1363 games (an average of .94 per goals a game) with 92 hat-tricks and possesses three World Cup winners medals. Ronaldo and Messi have a long way to go to reach those dizzy heights. Pele, more than anything, embodied all that was good about fairness and sportsmanship in the way he played ‘The Beautiful Game.’ “God was always important to me” he once said. “All my life I thank God for the gifts he has given me.” Pele, like many sportsmen and women, quotes Philippians 4:13 for inspiration: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Back to the World Cup! As I write, none of us have any idea how England will perform when they kick off in Volgograd on 18 June or whether Gareth Southgate’s (controversial) 23 man squad will be first round failures or if they will bring home the Jules Rimet trophy to end 52 years of hurt! For all you footballaphobes (yes, there is such a word) there is no escaping the hype. Wherever we find ourselves, flags are waving, shirts are being worn and pub signs, billboards and newspapers are talking about Russia 2018. Although it’s supposed to bring the nation together, the World Cup can be a divisive event. With that in mind. I want to offer a few suggestions on how you can survive the World Cup with your relationship intact!

www.billericaychurches.org

1) Remember it is only for one month, once every four years. 2) Do not accept any joint invitations for a fixture which is in the diary. 3) Go through the fixture list and meet up with friends on those dates. 4) Book in a few jobs around the house when no matches are scheduled. 5) If you decide to watch a match with your partner, avoid talking your way through it, commenting on a player’s looks or cheering for the wrong side. 6) If you don’t understand the offside rule, or any other rule for that matter, ask for an explanation before a match, never during one. 7) Make sure the fridge is stocked with some great snacks and your partner’s favourite drinks. 8) Suggest your partner gets together with his or her friends to watch the match when you aren’t around. 9) If England loses a match and your partner is in a foul mood, remember it’s not personal - be sure to steer clear from discussing any contentious issues until they have got over their sulk. 10) Finally, if you do all of the above, you will be in serious credit in your relationship. Some of you simply won’t want to waste time watching 22 blokes kicking around a bag of air and will disagree with former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly when he said: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much serious than that.” The Bible puts sport (and football) into some perspective: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever (1 Corinthians 9:25).” Having said all this, I’m still a footy fan and I’ll be watching as many games as my diary allows and, along with many of you, I will be shouting “Come On Engerland!” But please, spare us another heartbreaking penalty shootout. A World Cup Prayer for England: Heavenly Father, who played the cosmos into being, please help England rediscover their legs, their eyes and their hunger: that they might run more clearly, pass more nearly and enjoy the game more dearly. PS. Please help us put some pride back into English international football! Amen.

I am writing on behalf of Youth Matters. We have recently set up this group in order to help young children between the ages of 10-18 years get support during tough times, like bullying, anxiety and depression. The need for an increase in resources for the mental health area is getting bigger every day and a normal wait to get children of this age is approximately 9 months! For some this is just too long. Sadly we have had a few youngsters take their own lives recently as they can not cope any more. The pressures on this age are huge with social media - extra school years bullying - peer pressure etc. A group of people came together for a meeting to see what we could do to help. This was a mix of parents with experience of these issues, therapists, yoga teachers, mindfulness therapists. They are have all offered their time for free to help run this club. What we want to offer. We want to give the kids somewhere to come to relax and have fun and be themselves. We are offering art & crafts, yoga,

mindfulness and other services which we hope will help bridge the gap until they can get the help they need and feel like they are not alone. We are still in the early stages of our venture and have only had a few meetings for the children so far - but it seems to be working and we are trying to spread the work to make it more successful. We are holding the meetings in Brentwood at the moment but in time we would like to expand this to also hold one in Billericay. We have so far had some help from some local companies who have donated t-shirt printing for volunteers to wear, business cards that we can give out to spread the word and some materials for us to use in the sessions and the cost of DBS registrations. However it would be good if we could get some funding from some local companies or charities to increase the help we can give our youngsters. This will allow us to run activities for them to do or asking other people who we need to pay to come in for activities or to do talks. We would also like to be able to fund any child that we feel needs urgent help and we can get private therapy for .

Savings and banking round up PLUS THE

REVOLUT CARD In this month’s column, we look at: Why Bank of Cyprus’ easy access account paying 1.32% might not be the best choice Virgin Money’s new instant business savings account paying 1.20% – the pros and cons Why you should pack a Revolut card if you are going on holiday this summer Bank of Cyprus 1.32% Easy Access We’ve had a few enquiries at Savings Guru HQ from savers wondering why we haven’t included the new Bank of Cyprus easy access account in our best buys. The account pays 1.32% which is the best paying savings account which allows withdrawals without notice. It’s the best rate in the market in 2018 so far. There is one principle reason we haven’t included it and that is because it is a bonus account. The actual interest rate on the account is 0.85% but it comes with a 12 month bonus rate of 0.47% - this is more than half of the underlying rate. When bonus accounts originally came in to being, they were often

34

used as a way of rewarding customers with a top up. This was sometimes for loyalty (e.g. to retain their customer when another product finished), for longevity (e.g. limited to customer of five years or more), or a short term sweetener to thank them for switching. Now, we feel they are used increasingly with lengthy periods for the bonus to apply in the hope that customers will forget about them at the end of the time restriction and not move their money. If savers are disciplined enough to diarise and switch when the bonus period ends, then the rate on this account is very attractive. However, for those who are not, both RCI Bank and Shawbrook Bank pay 1.30% on their instant savings account. Both have spent much of the past year in our best buy tables. Virgin Money 1.20% Business Access Account Business accounts traditionally pay much lower interest for instant access than their personal counterparts. The best paying business instant savings account that we’ve been able to find at Savings Guru HQ this year is the 0.90% available from One Savings Bank owned, Kent Reliance. We were naturally intrigued to see

Virgin Money launch an account paying 1.20% and blowing everything else in the market out of the water. On top of a great rate, internet banking and a low minimum balance of £1,000, Virgin are also offering some great freebies – Virgin Money Lounges and Concierge. The lounges are in eight locations around the country (with more on the way), including two in London, and offer free refreshments and Wi-Fi, newspapers, networking events and a great place to host a business meeting. The concierge service offers free membership for 18 months with assistance booking hotel, travel, restaurants and sold out music events and much more. We decided this was all too good to be true but, unable to find a downside, we thought we’d open an account to find out. The online application was easy enough but, at the end of it, you then have to go through another process to register for online banking. We did this, only to be unable to see our new account. After contacting the savings team, we were advised they were very busy and would be in touch soon. 13 days later we are still waiting… By contrast, we applied for an account with Kent Reliance which was opened there and then and took less than five minutes to

complete the application and we were able to fund the account the same day and start earning interest straight away. The interest rate isn’t quite as good but amazing interest rates and perks aren’t much good if you can’t get to them!

The Revolut Card We managed to sneak away from the Savings Guru office for a short holiday (Santorini as you ask – and yes it is beautiful!). Having long tired of paying expensive bank fees for overseas transactions or trying to guess the right amount of currency to take abroad, stumbling across the Revolut card in 2015 was a life changer for travelling. One Revolut card can be loaded in Sterling, Euro and US Dollars with separate screens to manage each. Cards are topped up from your current account so you can limit the money on the card for security if you wish. Currency is bought at Interbank FX rates – which is as good as it gets for individuals – and the rate moves in real time so you can watch it and choose when you buy if you wish. £200 / 200 euros can be withdrawn free each month from ATMs and there are no payment fees or commission for presenting the Mastercard to pay. You can also see analytics on where you spend your money, should you want which can be quite revealing! The Visa payment issue impacted just about every card provider and occurred while away. Revolut’s communication on this (despite its own Mastercard not having problems, customers topping up with Visa weren’t able to) was far better than any other bank or card provider with alerts in their mobile app to advise and prompt help from their chat service.

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 One of my memories of this year’s Springwatch was of the sound engineer telling of the loss of his local Nightingales. His nine-year-old son wanted to hear a nightingale and he could only oblige using his phone. As he described this he became tearful. We then learnt that Nightingales have declined by 91% since the 1970s. It’s a shocking statistic. And it’s not just Nightingales that are in trouble. Two years ago, the State of Nature Report revealed that more than half of a section of UK species it studied have declined. It’s unsurprising that a walk in the countryside sometimes includes periods where you see or hear very little. There are still positive surprises though, ones that give us opportunity and hope. I was recently taken to a flood management area along one of the county’s many rivers. Essex has large estuaries that, though upstream from the coast they become mere brooks, can still overflow at low lying pinch points. This was one such place, where three streams converge. The Environment Agency own and manage the site which includes concrete culverts, wide banks of vegetation, a sluice and a boggy basin to collect overflow. A few dog walkers passed by but most of the ground seemed rarely disturbed. Water Voles are here, confirmed by the county expert, Darren Tansley. We enjoyed several species of damselfly, dragonflies and many butterflies including colourful Common Blues. There were birds, including some warblers that are quieter than usual in this topsy-turvy spring. The most attractive plant was the non-native Purple Goatsbeard, also named Salsify or Tragopogon (see picture). We resolved to look for more wildlife and to try to influence the management regime to promote more grassland species. I returned home to find our baby granddaughter in the garden, looking intrigued at the House Sparrows chirping and flitting around the nest box. Let’s hope that there will be Nightingales for her to enjoy in her lifetime. (links: https://www.essexwt.org.uk/ news/2016/09/14/state-nature-2016. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragopogon)
