in Parliament who campaigned as Eurosceptics over many years, the final passage of the Article 50 Bill last month was an extraordinary moment.
John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP For Basildon and Billericay
By the time you read this, the Prime Minister should have triggered Article 50, beginning the formal process of leaving the European Union. For those of us
I was very pleased the House of Commons saw off the two amendments added to the Bill by the House of Lords. The legislation was very simple – only 137 words long – and tightlyfocused on giving the Prime Minister the authority to begin the Brexit process at a time of her choosing. Amending such a Bill would not have been appropriate, even though I remain sympathetic to quickly resolving the rights of EU nationals living and working in the UK, and trust that the UK and EU governments will do this in short order.
Now begins the real work of leaving the EU. Whilst Peers and some MPs expressed concerns during the passage of the Article 50 legislation that Parliament would be sidelined during the Brexit process, I think entirely the opposite will be true. Senior Ministers will continue to be accountable to Parliament at the Despatch Box, and there have been at least 25 Select Committee reports on Brexit since the referendum alone. Furthermore, the passage of the ‘Great Repeal Bill’ will provide massive scope for Parliamentary discussion and scrutiny of the many issues thrown up by Brexit. Parliament made a commitment with the electorate to respect its wishes, and we must now start down this road.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Billericay, Ingatestone, Ramsden &
Stock and manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. hn Lennon seem to be everywhere this time of year: “So this is Christmas ne?” I’d like to change this slightly: “So this is Christmas and what will rate that Jesus was born to be our Saviour? It is, after all, what makes ating and, just like those amazing events in the summer, it can be life but only if you make the time to enjoy the celebration.

of the A local Church Services Christmas few years ago, over the the world’s top period. historians
gathered together and made a list, of what they considered to be, the 100 significant events in the history of the world. They discussed events 2nd December - ‘Annual Toy Service’ at 10.30am such as: the discovery of America; invention of December - ‘Carol Service by Candlelight’ at 7.00pm the airplane; nuclear fusion; the first printing press; putting a man into space, etc. 19th December - ‘Lunchtime Carol Service’ at 12.30pm at Saint Mary Magdalen Church on the list was the life of Jesus. ay 23rdNumber Decemberfour - ‘Family Nativity’ at 10.30am Initially I was a bit upset that they hadn’t put ristmasJesus Eve -at ‘Christingle 4.00pm number Service’ one, butatthen I realised they’d ‘Communion by Candlelight’ at 11.15pm put the ‘Life’ of Jesus. History records there Thewas first a Communion of Christmas. man called Jesus who lived a moral life, about the things at of10.00am God and died on a stmas taught Day - ‘Family Communion’ cross. Few people would disagree that Jesus was, and is, an amazing person and if Jesus had simply lived and died like everybody else, that’s probably about the best you could say about Him – number four on the list, just ahead of the many teachers, gurus and moral philosophers who have graced our world.
Emmanuel Church
But what makes Jesus different is that He not only died on a cross, He came back to life. And nobody else has ever done that - that’s what makes this the most significant event in the history of the world because it’s never been done. It’s a first, an original and, to date, still an absolute ‘one off.’ However, when it comes to a belief in the empty tomb, many people refuse to believe it. Jesus dies and that’s it. Many people think the same thing. For almost 2,000 years politicians, religious leaders, academics, lawyers and detectives, have all attempted to establish that Jesus didn’t rise from the dead. Yet their conclusions, however disagreeable to them, and sometimes to us, state that only a resurrection from the dead can adequately account for the phenomenon they were investigating. A former Lord Chief
www.billericaychurches.org
Justice, Lord Darling, said: “In its favour as living truth there exists such overwhelming evidence, positive and negative, factual and circumstantial that no intelligent jury in the world could fail to bring in a verdict that the resurrection story is true.” Whatever your scepticism, you can’t deny the experience of the many Christians down the centuries, and around one billion people in the world today, who celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead and who would testify to the fact that Jesus has changed their lives: transforming the darkest of situations; healing the most broken of lives; and bringing hope and purpose where there was none. I recognise that the empty tomb may be difficult to understand, that it may exhaust our imagination and push our ability to reason breaking point. But that is no reason not to believe in it and in what it points to - a God who cares so much that he entered our world to bring in the kingdom of God and show us a better way to live. Easter Sunday celebrates the impossible – a dead man rising from the dead. It is the story of the ultimate triumph over evil, of love and forgiveness, as God demonstrates his victory over death. The resurrection isn’t just an event that sits 2,000 years ago in history, it’s the ‘Greatest Story Ever Told’ and this is why Easter is such a significant celebration in the Christian Church and one you shouldn’t miss! May I extend an invitation to join with us here at Emmanuel, or any of the great churches in Billericay, as we journey through Holy Week from the: Praise of Palm Sunday; Poignancy of Maundy Thursday; Sorrow of Good Friday; Fun of Family Time on Holy Saturday; and the Joy of Celebration on Easter Day. May God’s richest blessing be upon you as you prepare to celebrate all the Easter season brings. revpacman.wordpress.com paul@billericaychurches.org @revPACman

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB
Tickets are now available for ourfundraising concert on Saturday evening 10th June to be performed by the Harmonie Concert Band. The venue is the Mayflower school hall in Stock Road Billericay and tickets cost £12. Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available. Our annual beer festival at the Billericay Football Club will be held on the weekend of 23rd/25th June. Make a note in your diary not to miss this popular local event. Sponsorship is available for individual barrels of beer at £50 per barrel, with the sponsor’s name featuring on the barrel, in the leaflets and on our website. If you’d like to sponsor a barrel please see the contact details on our website. Last month we made donations to local charities and community groups of just over £1400 and we have put aside £2100 to fund the cost of a senior citizens’ concert later in the year and the cost of taking a group of children from Chernobyl to Adventure Island in Southend in June.
We have had two interesting and informative speakers at our meetings recently – one a project manager on the Thames Tideway Tunnel, the new 25km sewer running from Acton to Stratford, the other from Anglian Water who had spent time in Mozambique with the charity Water Aid. For details of Lions events or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www. billericaylions.com
It is probably fair to say that the Round Table team are just about recovered from quite an intensive couple of months. Obviously our Fireworks display was a massive undertaking for the guys, but then we got straight back into the swing of things for December. The tree outside the Police station goes up first and then we are assisting at the Christmas market and running our own drinks stall. Shortly after this, we take up the reins with our Santa sleigh visits to four local estates across two weekends. We are ever grateful for the helpers we get on these events and this year it was the ATC and Cricket club members who joined us in being able to put some smiles on the kids’ faces and raise a bit of cash for some local good causes. Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable.co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. We are a registered charity and have been able to help many local people over the years and we want to continue so – please check out the request form here:www.billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 Last month a recreation ground at Crays Hill between Billericay and Wickford was planted at one end with a new woodland, to be bordered by a wildflower strip, and with a small orchard near the car park. Paths through the woodland will lead to a small pond. These new features add variety and wildlife for the enjoyment of the community. The funds for this have been provided by the Veolia Environmental Trust and the Woodland Trust. The local primary school, who helped plant the orchard, have named the woodland, ‘The Forest of Life’ to reflect the importance of trees to our own survival as a species. Most of the site will continue to be mown short, keeping it as recreational. It is good to make space for nature in an amenity park, as it is good to provide footpaths for access through nature reserves, but always remembering the primary purpose of the type of green space. *********************** Spring came early this year with unusually warm temperatures. It was not quite the middle day of March when I saw wild cherry and blackthorn in bloom, Chiffchaffs singing and a Comma butterfly fluttering along a woodland rides over a patch of Primroses. In April, our woodlands come alive even more, with birdsong and with wildflowers. Woodland flowers are early, flourishing before the leaves create a canopy that will shade much of the ground below. A classic seasonal favourite is the Bluebell which thrives in Essex woods of coppiced oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut. We have many superb displays of Bluebells locally at sites such as Hockley Woods, Pound Wood, Norsey Wood and around Hanningfield Reservoir. Although it may seem common, our native Bluebell is under threat because of hybridisation with Spanish Bluebells (something that even Brexit is unlikely to change). The latter are ornamental and have escaped our gardens. Our native Bluebells are droopy with bell-like flowers hanging from bent stems whereas the Spanish cousins are upright. https://tinyurl.com/ guqbdj4 tells us more. The hue and aroma of a dense array of Bluebells almost overpowers the senses. It creates wonderful opportunities for photography too. Our native Bluebells are protected by law, so we must be mindful of not damaging the plants to get that treasured family picture of us sharing one of our local natural wonders.

Flat Roofing Guaranteed for Life Advertorial
Around 70% of homes in the UK incorporate a mineral felt flat roof. Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs - Look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. Felt will attract moss and algae further degrading the roof surface.
IMPORTANT: - ALL PROPERTY OWNERS PLEASE BE AWARE When a flat roof is replaced there are Part L Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Please call for free information regarding the Part L Law. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. BALANCE TRANSFER In January, for many, the letterbox becomes an enemy. When it flips open it contains a bill. And the worst of those for many are credit cards - a final reckoning of the last year’s debts, topped off by Christmas spending. If you’ve debts you can’t repay, there are two key things to do: stop borrowing more and cut the interest rate. By cutting the rate, more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just help add profit to the lender. The main weapon to clear credit and store cards is a balance transfer, where you get a new credit card(s) that repays debts on existing cards for you, so you owe it, but at a far lower cost, for a small fee. The good news is right now there’s white hot competition in this market. So, sort it now and stop paying more than needed. And if you won’t listen to me, listen to Marc who emailed: “took your tip on taking a balance transfer card and we’ve saved £9,400 over the next 40 months. Amazing.” How to choose the right balance transfer card deals There are a vast range of cards to choose from, ranging up to 43 months 0%. But it isn’t quite a simple as just go for the longest. 1. Go for the lowest fee in the time you’re sure you can repay. Most cards charge a one-off fee on the amount of debt transferred. So, for example, 3% is £30 per £1,000. Generally, the longer the 0% period, the bigger the fee. So, what you need to do is calculate how long you think you’ll take to clear the debt, add a few months for safety, then pick the lowest fee within the time you need. If you’re not sure, play safe and go long. For example, the longest card available at the time of writing is the www.MBNA.co.uk up to 43 mths 0%, with a 3.29% fee. The
longest no-fee card is www.Halifax.co.uk up to 26 mths 0%. 2. You need a PERSONALISED best buy table. Each lender credit scores you differently, where one accepts, others reject. Best buy tables just list the best offers available, but what really counts is what you can be accepted for. Worse still, the only way to find out what you’ll actually get is to apply, and that marks your credit file. Yet we’ve seen a new range of tools that show your likely chances of acceptance before applying, protecting your credit score. Some card firms have their own or my Eligibility Calculator (www.mse.me/BTeligibility) shows your chances for most top cards, effectively giving you a personal best buy table. 3. Many cards are ‘up to’s’: With these cards, only 51% of accepted applicants need get the advertised 0% length, the rest could get a shorter deal. So, in many cases, the cards that aren’t ‘up to’s’ can be better. The longest non-up to 0% deal is www.SainsburysBank. co.uk 42mth 0% for a 3.5% fee, and it also has the longest fee free deal at 25mth 0%. This is especially important when you do a eligibility comparison. If all your accepted cards are ‘up to’ cards, then the likelihood is you won’t get the full 0%. So even if there’re one or two non ‘up to’ deals there, they may be worth looking The 3 Balance Transfer Golden Rules
“IF YOU’RE NOT SURE PLAY SAFE AND GO LONG” The 3 Balalnce Transfer Golden Rules Getting the right card’s only half the job. Once you get it, you need to use it the right way.
a) Repay at least the set monthly min, or you can lose the 0% deal. The same can be true if you bust your credit limit.
pay minimums on the rest. Once that’s clear, focus on the next most expensive debt and so on.
b) Always clear the card or shift again before the 0% ends, or rates jump to the representative APRs, typically 18% to 20%.
Are you in debt crisis? The solutions above are for those who can manage their debts. Yet if you: a) can’t meet even the minimum monthly payments b) have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year’s salar c) can’t sleep due to your debts, or have depression or anxiety because of them, then you’re in what I define as debt crisis.
c) Don’t spend or withdraw cash on them, it’s rarely at the cheap rate. Instead, shift your debt to these cards, then put it away somewhere not to be used. A final thought on this. The best way to clear debts is to repay as much as you can and be wary of only repaying the minimum repayments. That’s dangerous. Minimum repayments are set to only just cover the interest, so repayments drop as debt drops, prolonging the debt period. For example, with £3,000 on a typical card, repaying minimum repayments it’d take you 27 years to repay, costing £4,000 in interest. Now you may say to me “I can’t afford to pay more”. Yet in the first month the minimum repayment would be about £70, and if you fixed your repayment at that rather than letting it drop, you’d clear the debt in five years. Yet if you’ve multiple debts, order them in terms of interest rates, and throw all spare cash at repaying the one with the highest rate (as its growing fastest). Just

The new elecTric SUV The SUVs are coming!!! Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo and Bentley are just three names that have had to tick a box as far as manufacturing a SUV is concerned. They simply had to keep up with market demand. Something that BMW has already done with there X3 and X1 drives, however the new i5 is the electronic/ green version, the one up from the i3. This allows those family 5 seater wagon lovers to go green in a BMW! The pictures make my face cringe up a little, and I start to make a stereotypical American sound that has no spelling, but might look like “eewww”. But I think we can all agree the fact that it has a BMW badge on it, the fact that it is new and the fact that it is going
with the “all electric” trend we have to acknowledge and applaud, we are going to see a lot of these on the road. The price will be somewhere near an entry level Tesla Model S, so not astronomical around 50k, but still pricey compared to, dare I say it, a Nissan Qashqai. As expected with these electric cars, the i5 will have longer battery life courtesy of a larger ion battery pack and is expected to last a figure approaching 200 miles. Competition is growing with the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive and the Volvo v60 but expect BMW to hold their own. The i3 and the i8 are not exactly rare and neither will this come 2019.
