month. The judges’ decision was that the Government does not by itself have the power to trigger Article 50,and that Parliamentary legislation is required to start the process of leaving the EU.

John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP

This raises the unwelcome prospect of our Brexit timetable being delayed, as Parliamentarians seek to amend the legislation. For my sake, I am determined that the will of the British people, clearly expressed in the referendum result, is fully respected, Iwill man the barricades if necessary.

It was made abundantly clear by the Government before the vote that the referendum Having long campaigned for an result would be implemented in/out EU referendum,1and having by the Page political establishment, Lord of London.qxp_Layout 31/10/2016 10:21 1 strongly supported ‘leave’ in the with both David Cameron and referendum, I was disappointed Jeremy Corbynstating they would with the High Court ruling last invoke Article 50 the day after For Basildon and Billericay

a Brexit result. The pro-EU leaflet the Government sent to every household again stated this, and people voted in the referendum on this basis. The Government is appealing against the ruling in the Supreme Court, but if the previous ruling is upheld MPs must not hinder the Government’s invocation of Article 50. The electorate will rightly punish their elected representatives if they block the decision made by over 17 million people on 23rd June, and the House of Lords would be playing with fire if they decide on delaying tactics. Finally, as this is my final column of 2016, may I wish all my constituents a merry and peaceful Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Billericay, Ingatestone, Ramsden &

Stock and manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RECIPE

Mulled Wine (4 - 6 Servings) Ingredients: 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)

Equipment: Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins

Method:

Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don’t bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your

mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside.

The familiar words of John Lennon seem to be everywhere this time of year: “So this is Christmas and what have you done?” I’d like to change this slightly: “So this is Christmas and what will you do?” Will you celebrate that Jesus was born to be our Saviour? It is, after all, what makes Christmas worth celebrating and, just like those amazing events in the summer, it can be life changing to all of you – but only if you make the time to enjoy the celebration. ‘Churches Together in Billericay’ extend an invitation to worship with them this Christmas season. Why not put a date in your diary and be sure not to miss out on the greatest Christmas gift of all – Jesus?

A Poem For Christmas

Revd Paul A. Carr Emmanuel Church

(Team Rector: the Billericay & Little Burstead Team Ministry)

Giving singing carols,Services eating over and the drinking as much Here arepresents, some of the local Church Christmas period.as we can! It’s one of the few times of the year we give thought to our fellow man. A time of ‘glad tidings’ and ‘peace on earth’ is the Angel’s call, This Christmas celebration isn’t so bad after all!

Emmanuel Church

2nd December Toy light Service’ 10.30am dress the tree, Hang Sunday the streamers, drape- ‘Annual the tinsel, theatcandles, Santa Claus coming soon – Service it’s all so to see!at 7.00pm Sunday 16thisDecember - ‘Carol byplain Candlelight’ Oh! and we mustn’t forget to hang the mistletoe from the ceiling Wednesday 19th December - ‘Lunchtime Carol Service’ at 12.30pm These are all things that help to create that special feeling. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church

Put the Sunday advent23rd calendar up-to-date, Santa at Claus is coming soon - not long to wait. December - ‘Family Nativity’ 10.30am And we say Saint Nicholas is heaven sent, Christmas Eve - ‘Christingle Service’ at 4.00pm Till we realise the debt we’re in and count the money we’ve spent. ‘Communion by Candlelight’ at 11.15pm Themake first Communion Christmas. And does it really us feel anyofbetter, to send a Christmas card or a letter? Does the Christmas excitement moreCommunion’ than a day two? Well some say it doesn’t last Daystay - ‘Family ator 10.00am Sometimes this Christmas cheer seems a thing of the past! And through it all there seems no danger, Of us even thinking back to that child in a manger. We’ve heard the story, countless many times before - but let’s take a moment to remember The real reason why we celebrate the 25th December: Born the Saviour of the world, the gift of love from God. But when you consider the dirty stable don’t you find it rather odd, That the King of Kings and Lord of Lords should be born as poor as this? But the real story behind the birth of Jesus is not that difficult to miss. He taught about another kingdom and how life would never be the same, But he died a criminals death on Calvary’s tree - because they said he was to blame. He rose again to conquer death to have victory over the grave, To prove to us, why He was born - the world to save. So, how do you respond this Christmas time, to the gift of God’s only Son! Will you wrap him up in the festivities and ignore the work’s He’s done? Let’s put Christ back into Christmas, it’s not that hard to do. And if you do, then Christmas, won’t be quite the same for you! May I invite you, and your family, to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas this year? As you do, I pray that the Joy of the Angels, the Eagerness of the Shepherds, the Perseverance of the Wise Men, the Obedience of Joseph and Mary, the Peace of Jesus and God’s richest blessing will fill your hearts and lives this Christmas season and in the year to come. revpacman.wordpress.com paul@billericaychurches.org @revPACman

BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB A busy period. Sixty members and guests attended our 57th Charter Lunch on November 6 at the Beauvoir Arms, Downham, among them the presidents of our good Rotary friends from Billericay Mayflower, Basildon and Brentwood. Guest speaker was Margaret Mills, MA, BA (Hon). The night before our members turned out in force to support the Round Table spectacular Fireworks display in Lake Meadows, managing one of busiest entry gates. In October, president Mike Sinclair completed the Blind Walk from the Health Centre in Stock Road, along Billericay High Street, to our meeting place, Reids restaurant in Laindon Road to raise money for Orbis, the organisation for aiding the partially-sighted. Social events have included a wine-tasting evening at the award-winning New Hall Vineyard at Purleigh and a visit to the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Mildmay. President Sinclair has been particularly busy, presenting Badges of Office to the new term of RotaKids at Quilters Junior School and representing the club in laying a wreath at Billericay’s war memorial on Remembrance Sunday. Entries for the second Soapbox Derby next May have already reached forty, almost as many as started this year. A 42-metre screen at Sun Corner is an innovation that will allow all those on Queen Elizabeth Field to watch all the racing from the field. Entry and ticket details and all Club information on our website: www, billericayrotary.org. Or contact secretary, Ed Harrison on: ed14harrison@hotmail.co.uk

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB

The middle of October saw teams of disabled swimmers from Billericay, Germany and Belgium come together to compete in our 13th international swimming gala at Basildon Sporting Village. The 36 competitors, aged between 7 and 45, enjoyed a wonderful competition and a great weekend that included pottery making at Barleylands, a dinner/disco on the Saturday evening and a trip to Colchester Zoo on the Sunday. Our fundraising quiz on 19th November is a sell-out with nearly 100 tickets sold and we are looking forward to a fun evening seeing what people know (or have forgotten) about 2016. The Fireworks run by Billericay Round Table is the biggest display in Essex and has grown to such an extent that various other local clubs help out with some manpower – from the Lions, 10 of us were pleased to support Round Table on the night by manning one of the gates, despite the cold!

As always we will be joining in the Remembrance Day commemorations by laying wreaths at the services in Billericay and Stock. On the social side we visited Billericay Brewing company in Chapel Street for a talk on beer making and sampling some very tasty ales and have a trip planned to the Last Night of the Autumn Proms at the Cliffs in Southend. And then it’s all out for the Christmas sleigh. Where has the year gone? For details of Lions events or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com

October has been an incredibly busy month for Billericay Round Table. One of our main projects this year was to enable more than a hundred friends and families from BOSP to have a ‘Big day out’ for some fun and rest bite. Two coaches were loaded up, including six of our own members, and headed off to Chessington World of Adventures for a fantastic day in the autumn sun. Everyone received a specially printed, bright yellow t-shirt to wear which really added to the community feel of the occasion and made for easy recognition around the park. We felt very privileged to spend time with such an inspiring bunch of people and look forward to doing it again. Of course, these are the fruits of our fundraising efforts but there is a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes in the run up to our main event – November 5th, Lake Meadows Fireworks Display! By the time you read this, our members and helpers will either be toiling at full steam in the midst of over 19,000 visitors or recharging their batteries in the wind down, hopefully in the knowledge that we have another bumper amount of donationcash in the piggy bank! If you have not already bought your tickets (and there is still time), then please see our webpage at www.billericayfireworks.co.ukwhich also includes details our inaugural VIP marquee experience. As ever, we are more than happy to welcome guys aged 18-45 who want to ‘DO MORE’; check us out at www.facebook.com/ billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable.co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@billericayroundtable.co.uk Lastly, we invite members of our community to make a donation request for a special person or special group within the Billericay area via www.billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 We’re in a landscape that is undulating, a patchwork of small fields and hedgerows, much of it pasture. It is a bit different to the landscape along the A127 corridor, but it is still Essex.

Garden Design & Construction for over 40 years

• Patios • Driveways • Decking

A Red Kite rises, twists and falls in the wind, searching for anything edible. The landowner tells us that a pair of these colourful and spectacular scavengers are around throughout the year, so this may even be their first breeding attempt in our county for many years.

• Artificial Grass

Two of us are here as volunteer wildlife advisers, part of new service launched this year by Essex Wildlife Trust. The service provides advice to landowners who want to encourage wildlife on their patch, however large or small. There aren’t enough professional resources to visit all the sites so we have been trained to carry out and report on the site visits and call in the experts if necessary.

• Lighting

Between the showers, the landowner showed us around her 10 acre site which is used for horse grazing but otherwise is being managed for wildlife. The ground is uneven, there are clumps and tufts, providing places for many of the small creatures which make up the lower part of the food chain. The landowner has seen Stoats, Common Toads, Common Frogs, voles, Grass Snakes, Slow Worms, bees, dragonflies, 3 species of owl and many other birds.

In the cool of late autumn, it is only birds we see. A Sparrowhawk puts up a flock of finches and a few Yellowhammers and these call and circle tightly before alighting in the trees then disappearing into a crop on the neighbouring farm. Scanning a ploughed field on this farm I found 20 or so Red-legged Partridges scurrying along the boundary hedge. A good number, but this was no natural colonisation. We saw more partridges in pens, so these may have been bred en masse for shooting, a practise that the League of Cruel Sports is campaigning against. But by luck or design, other wildlife does benefit from shooting - the finches we saw are feeding in a game cover crop. We ask to return in the spring and summer to count the breeding birds and look for insects and flora. On our way home, we admire the stunning autumn colours of Epping Forest. In my youth the trees were nearly bare at this time but nowadays oak leaves are still clinging stubbornly to the branches even as the Christmas lights appear on the houses.

Unpleasant IssUes the 3 “D’s The three Ds – death, divorce and dementia – are things none of us want to think about. Yet if you’re reading this you’re likely old enough to know life isn’t always happy and hassle free. So, cheery chap that I am, I want to encourage you to sit down and have the ‘unpleasant issues chat’ whether with your parents or children. Ignoring this costs. Not just financially, but in hassle and emotion too, for you and your family. So, I plan to be candid and unemotional. Unpleasant issues happen and you need to plan. Here are four of the big ones; 1. Free wills - you’re going to die, ensure you minimise the impact on your loved ones Die will-less and your affairs can be in limbo for years. So, whatever your age, if you’ve assets (e.g., house, savings, a business), and people you’d like to look after, consider making a will. This is even more important if you live with your partner but aren’t married or in a civil partnership. Your partner has no status under law. If you die, they may not get the house or even the kids – even if you’ve been together 37 years and have 6 children.

your appointment. Print out the receipt and take with you to the solicitors. If you can’t afford it, you can give less, though don’t game it. 2. One in three over 65s will develop dementia. I’m 44 - thankfully I can’t foresee losing mental capacity, but I do have a Lasting Power of Attorney set up, in case. Without a Power of Attorney, if you lose your faculties through dementia, a stroke or accident, sorting your finances is less clear-cut than if you’d died. Don’t assume relatives can walk into the bank and access your money - not even to pay for your care, or the mortgage. To take charge of your affairs, someone would need to apply via the Court of Protection this is a hassle and costly. I’ve heard many nightmares, like forumite Norma, who said: “My mum is now responsible for my dad, who has advanced dementia. It’s a very long, intrusive and expensive process. She’ll have to pay hefty yearly fees too. I just wish we’d managed to get Power of Attorney instead, when dad was more capable.”

Making a will, the right way, can be costly. For full help, see my cheap wills guide at www.mse.me/wills, which runs you through all the options.

“IT’S USUALLY FAR BETTER TO SELL AND DOWNSIZE.”

However right now Will Aid month offers solicitor drafted wills (the gold standard) for far less than you’d usually pay. Go to the www.willaid.org.uk website to choose a local solicitor to book an appointment.

With a Power of Attorney, you nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if needed. This DOESN’T mean giving up control now - you can opt for it only to come into effect if you’re no longer capable. You can set one up yourself by filling in the online form for England and Wales at www. gov.uk/power-of-attorney (£110 fee). For Scotland, it costs £74 (www.publicguardianscotland.gov.uk), and for Northern Ireland it’s £115 (search on www.nidirect.gov.uk). Yet if you’ve complex financial affairs I’d get a

The solicitors give their time in the hope you’ll donate to one of nine charities, including Action Aid, NSPCC and the British Red Cross. The donation requested is £95 (£150 for couples), which you can make online before

solicitor to set one up. It’ll cost around £700ish. There’s good info on www.alzheimers.org.uk. 3. Are you hurting your spouse by looking after the finances? More than 60% of couples say one person deals with all the home’s money issues. If you’re reading this, my guess is that’s you. Yet if something happened, it could heap financial misery on the grief. That’s because often the other partner is in the dark. Too often people ask me: “My partner just died, I’m in dire straits, I simply don’t know where to start with the finances, what do I do?” Why not create a financial factsheet naming all product providers – from roadside recovery to investments, boiler cover to bank accounts. Then have a kitchen table briefing every few months to update and discuss. 4. Need cash from your house? Don’t leave it late Those in their 60s living in large homes with kids who’ve long since left the nest often plan to downsize “one day” to release money as they’re asset rich, cash poor. But as time ticks on, I often hear “it’s still a few years away” and finally “we’re too old to move”. It’s usually far better just to sell and downsize. If not, the main option is to use an equity release product. This is a way to borrow from your home’s value while you still live there. But

with average interest rates at around 5.5%, they are far higher than most mortgages. And more significantly, as it’s usually paid from your estate or the sale of your house on death, you often don’t make any repayments, which means that, unlike a mortgage, you’re subject to vicious compounding. Having said that, while it is more expensive, if you don’t have any dependents who need the money, equity release means you maximise the gain for your money. My two main tips for equity release are: A) Don’t just think ‘how much will we need for the rest of our life’ – as the sooner you borrow the more expensive it is, as it has longer to grow. So borrow what you need when you need it, and borrow more later if you have to. B) Get advice before you do it. And only go for a firm that is a member of www. equityreleasecouncil.com – this trade body’s members at least promise your estate will never owe more than your house is worth.

2016 REVIEW My credentials and reputation are not exactly on world level, but read on as I give my thoughts on the 2016 sporting year. How have we done this year as a nation!? Excuse the cheesy barometer! Winning – Not bad – Fail – Epic Fail Rugby – Last year was a year to forget, but my word 2016 has seen England hit an amazing winning streak, putting them at number 2 in the world, soon to be number 1. A fresh mentality from Eddie Jones has seen a new confidence running through the Rugby team this year, making them almost unbeatable before a game has kicked off. Long may it continue! Football – Oh wow! 2015 looked ok for England, they had qualified with ease and actually had some exciting players etc. Then the Euros descended on us, some uninspiring results in the group followed by ICELAND! Oh dear! Formula 1 – Lewis Hamilton just lost out to his team mate and rival Nico Rosberg. It was somewhat of a hollow victory for Nico, as the momentum was with Hamilton for the entire second half of the season and if it wasn’t for some bad luck he would have taken a 4th title. Olympics 2016 - Team GB claimed more medals that they ever have at an Olympic Games and totally smashed the medal haul they took at London 2012. This is some feat considering most experts and former athletes were saying how hard it will be to follow such a home games. From Cycling and Rowing where Britain usually clean up to Hockey where they shocked the world. Rio had us staying up late and tuning in early to catch up.

Cricket – A struggle this year! Alistair Cook has been flying the flag on his own with the help of Joe Root. They drew at home to Pakistan as they looked hopeless against a world class spinner in Yasir Shah and then went to the sub continent to play Bangladesh and India. While Bangladesh are getting better, England will be disappointed to draw the series at 1-1 and then again in India they are 1-0 down in the series. Spin is killing them at this time and it is quite obvious how you hurt England at the moment. I expect the Aussies are trying to get Shane Warne out of retirement.

Boxing – British boxers are continuing to dominate at world level. Anthony Joshua has become the Heavyweight Champion and remains a shining light for British boxing. James Degale still holds a belt, along with Kell Brook, Tony Bellew, Nathan Cleverly and others. Katie Taylor has also started to put women’s boxing on the map this year in this country. She fights again before the year is out and with Nicola Adams threatening to turn professional Boxing is still Britain’s success story. Tennis – Andy Murray has firmly established himself as the best tennis player on the planet right now. He has taken advantage of dips in form from Djokovic and Nadal with both hands. With Roger Federer seemingly at the end of his career, can he dominate, I wouldn’t put it past him! I would love to cover more sports, but 2016 has been yet another positive year for Britain in regards to sporting achievement. Football has really let us down and apparently is the most loved sport in the country, but all we seem to see if negativity relating to the so called “beautiful game”. Perhaps I will leave it out of the list next year.
