ristmasThe Evemusical - ‘Christingle Service’ at 4.00pm Schönberg (music by Claude-Michel and lyrics by Alain Boublil) follows Victor Hugo’s ‘Communion by Candlelight’ at 11.15pm of the same name, first published in 1862, Thenovel first Communion of Christmas. telling theCommunion’ story of Jean Valjean – a French stmas in Day - ‘Family at 10.00am prisoner hounded and ultimately transformed by forgiveness. Valjean was sentenced to hard labour for stealing a loaf of bread and gradually, because of his environment, became a hardened convict. He was eventually released after 19 years: 5 years for the offence and 14 years for trying to escape! Convicts in 19th Century France had to carry identity cards (remember his prison number? *) and, because of the stigma, no innkeeper would allow a dangerous criminal to spend the night. Valjean wandered the village roads for several days seeking shelter against the weather until, finally, a kindly Bishop had mercy on him.
That night Valjean lay in his comfortable bed until the Bishop and his sister drifted off to sleep, then he rummaged through the cupboard for the family silver and crept off into the darkness. The next morning three policemen knocked on the Bishop’s door, with Valjean in tow. They’d caught the convict in flight with the stolen silver and were ready to put the scoundrel in chains for life. The Bishop responded in a way no one, especially Valjean, expected: “So here you are! I’m delighted to see you. Had you forgotten that I gave you the candlesticks as well? They’re silver like the rest, and worth a good 200 francs. Did you
www.billericaychurches.org
forget to take them?” Valjean couldn’t believe what was happening. He was speechless. The Bishop assured the gendarmes that Valjean was no thief: “This silver was my gift to him.” When the gendarmes withdrew, the Bishop gave the candlesticks to Valjean: “Do not forget, do not ever forget, that you have promised me to use the money to make yourself an honest man.” The power of the Bishop’s act, defying every human instinct for revenge, changed Valjean’s life forever. A naked encounter with forgiveness – especially since he had never repented – melted the granite defences of his soul. He kept the candlesticks as a precious memento of that life transforming moment and dedicated himself to helping others in need, becoming a successful businessman and Mayor. Hugo’s novel, however, stands as a two-edged parable of forgiveness. A detective named Javert, who knows no law but justice, stalks Valjean mercilessly for over two decades. As Valjean is transformed by forgiveness, the detective is consumed by a thirst for vengeance. When Valjean saves Javert’s life – the prey showing grace to his pursuer – the detective senses his black and white world, lived in obedience to the Law, beginning to crumble. Unable to cope with a grace that goes against all instinct, and finding within himself no corresponding forgiveness, Javert jumps off a bridge into the Seine River. Hugo paints a remarkable picture of the dramatic theological confrontation between Old Testament law and New Testament grace. Magnanimous forgiveness and grace, such as that offered to Valjean by the Bishop, allows for the possibility of transformation. Just as magnanimous forgiveness and grace, offered to us through the Lord Jesus, also allows the possibility of transformation for each one of us (* 24601). May God’s richest blessing be upon you and enable you to show mercy and grace to others.

Flat Roofing Guaranteed for Life Advertorial
Around 70% of homes in the UK incorporate a mineral felt flat roof. Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs - Look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. Felt will attract moss and algae further degrading the roof surface.
IMPORTANT: - ALL PROPERTY OWNERS PLEASE BE AWARE When a flat roof is replaced there are Part L Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Please call for free information regarding the Part L Law. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB Carnival! That’s the only word to describe the successful second running of the club’s Spectacular SoapBox Derby on Bank Holiday Monday. Over fifty karts, all shapes, designs and colours competed in the various categories and their teams matched them with a host of wild fancy dress, dancing and singing as their kart prepared to roll down London Road. And the sun came out too to help make it a glorious event. The crowds reached an estimated 8.000 , three thousand more than last year and, while the final proceeds to be distributed among the chosen Rotary charities will not be confirmed until all the money has been called in, the target seems certain to surpass the 2016 figure of £26,000. The huge video screen on the Queen Elizabeth 11 field proved a major innovation with spectators lining up almost fifty deep to watch the thrills and spills. Club president Mike Sinclair said: “We are delighted with the success and proud of our achievement and we thank all the other service clubs in the area who gave their time and support voluntarily.” Next major club event is in September when we will be hosting our international friends and colleagues from Beausoleil (France), Alba and Ovada (Italy) and Karlshamn (Sweden), Among the events arranged is a personal guided tour of the Houses of Parliament by Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock.
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB
On 1st May Lions supported the Billericay Rotary Club by manning one of the entrances to their 2nd Soap Box Derby. This is a superb event for the town and congratulations to Rotary for organising such a great day. 10th May saw nearly 60 members and guests celebrating the 38th “birthday” of the club with our Charter Lunch at Orsett Hall, rounded off by a very entertaining cabaret performance by a member of the local operatic society. At the end of June we will be taking a group of children from Chernobyl for a day out at Adventure Island in Southend, and in July we will be helping Lions from across south Essex with the annual Disabled Sports Day at St John’s School, Hadleigh. In the last 2 months we have made or agreed 9 charity donations totalling £3,875 (ranging from £60 to £1,000).
We need to keep the funds coming in and our next event is our 8th annual beer festivalat the Billericay Football Club on the weekend of 23rd/25th June. Please do join us and enjoy this popular event. We are also delighted to say we will have a new Christmas sleigh this December and are grateful to Billericay Town Council, Basildon Council and the Co-op Community Fund for grants to fund this costly project. For details of Lions events or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com
Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/ sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable.co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@ billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. We are a registered charity and have been able to help many local people over the years and we want to continue so – please check out the request form here:www. billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 The Magpie hopped along the fence, then leaned over, tilting his head sideways and peering at the ivy which grew below. It seemed to be searching for something. It hopped to the lower branches of the nearby cherry tree but its view into the ivy was still obscured. Ten metres away, in a dense shrub, a male Blackbird, beak full of worms and grubs, watched and waited. A highpitched noise like the squeak of a gate sounded above the anxious churring of Blue Tits and chirping of House Sparrows. The squeak was a warning to keep silent. The Magpie flew away, seemingly thwarted. Only after a few minutes did the Blackbird move; through the garden, pausing on various branches to check for danger, then disappearing into the upper tangle of ivy branches where the nest of young was hidden.

Magpies are clever nest predators. They will watch smaller birds going to a likely site, seek a nest out, drive off the adult and take the eggs or young. Sometimes the mate will lure adult birds away from the nest, allowing the seeker in to help himself to the meal, unmolested. Nature is red in tooth and claw. The lion does not lie down with the lamb. “But, please, not here” we say. “Not my Blackbirds.” But only one in four Blackbird nests are successful and if a nest is predated they will usually try to raise young again. In the days when gamekeepers slaughtered Magpies, more songbird nestlings survived but more died in the winter. As gamekeeping declined the increasing Magpies moved into the suburbs and the effect on songbirds was noticeable. Generations had not suffered this danger and their nests were easily found. They had to relearn and they did. The prediction that Magpies would cause extinctions of songbirds did not come true and, today Blackbirds still sing in chorus at dawn. Predation only causes extinction when the balance is upset. The foxes, gulls and crows grow numerous on our refuse and outnumber the Lapwings that have few damp fields left for food and breeding. We should blame ourselves for the declines, not the predators. The Magpie has returned many times, and is back even now when the Blackbird chicks have left the nest and are hidden in the dense shrubs. The father has changed the defence strategy when the Magpies come by, clucking loudly, a call to arms to its mate to be ready to try and drive the enemy away.

TRAVEL - PEmbRokEshiRE The
By Tim Saunders – www.travelwriter.biz Miles and miles of sandy beaches. This was an absolute revelation when my family and I visited Wales. We’d been driving for about four hours and noticed a sign for Port Talbot, which was our first introduction to the country’s splendid coastline. Surprisingly, it was not packed with sun worshippers either. We paddled and then returned to the car for the final leg of the journey to Pembrokeshire. An hour or so later we arrived at West Grove Barns in the village of Hundleton where we stayed in the Beech barn conversion. With views across farmland to the foreshore it was enjoyably peaceful. Pembroke appeals to ramblers and we initially questioned whether it was appropriate for a young family with a tandem pushchair. But we quickly realised that the area could appeal to everyone. For obvious reasons, we were attracted to a place called Saundersfoot, home to another wonderful golden stretch of sand. Finding free parking was nigh on impossible and as with many places around here there were many one-way streets and hills. It was a bit windy and, not fancying sand in our sandwiches, we headed for the nearby park. Walking the coastal path, we passed through some dark tunnels and savoured the views out to sea, treating ourselves to ice creams along the way. Folly Farm, about 20 minutes from base, was a child’s paradise and both Harriett and Heidi thoroughly enjoyed this attraction. I tried to show Harriett how a goat was milked but she seemed more interested in steering a tractor. There were some unusual animals here not least the Fossa, a bit like a cat which could eat lemurs if the mood took it. There are only 60 in the world. Harriett found it very difficult to leave Folly Farm because of the John Deere pedal tractors and the enormous sandpit where there were various vehicles including her favourite Land Rover. Unfortunately, we didn’t get time to try our hand at operating a real digger. The National Trust manages much of the Pembrokeshire coastline and at Bosherston we endured a gruelling walk with our pushchair to one
of the best beaches in Wales (if not the UK) - at Stackpole. No matter how many bumps, rocks and steps the scenery was so picturesque and the effort was richly rewarded. On our way, along narrow paths, we passed an enormous pond of waterlilies home to frolicking otters and dancing dragon flies. In time, we arrived at the beach for Harriett to build sandcastles and pour sand over her tired and unsuspecting daddy. She found this particularly amusing. “Was Roald Dahl, the children’s author, Welsh?” questioned Caroline looking at Barafundle, the name of the last sandy beach we visited. He was born in Llandaff, Wales in 1916. You can see how such strange place names might have inspired his creation of hornswogglers, snozzwangers and Oompa-Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For us, Barafundle was the icing on the cake. We asked a National Trust volunteer whether it was possible to take a pushchair along the route to this beach and he reckoned it was despite there being about 50 steps. After the previous day’s experience, we decided to ignore his judgement and thankfully so because it turned out to be an arduous trek up steep steps and across fields. He clearly had a sense of humour. Harriett walked and we took it turns to carry Heidi. It would have been impossible with our tandem buggy. Half an hour or so later we found ourselves entering a wonderfully sandy beach through an old stone archway and many more steps. Sitting in the shade of the cliff edge above, we avoided the heat of the day. It was common for the weather to be a bit dull in the mornings and then by 2pm or 3pm the sun would appear and the temperatures soared. Parents have little time to relax but Caroline and I probably grabbed five or ten minutes where we could just sit and savour the magnificent rugged coastline. The video of Barafundle at travelwriter.biz gives you a little flavour of what this beach is like. One of the most cherished memories of this holiday for me was paddling with Harriett here. Such carefree times. Unsurprisingly this marvellous landscape appealed to the likes of the artist JMW Turner. The Pembrokeshire coastline really was a joy to behold and truly uplifting. When travelling to Wales there was a great sense of being abroad thanks to the distinctive language and the Welsh were extremely friendly people, too. A holiday of fabulous memories.

the cheques and will involve sending images instead (I know – it’s not rocket science is it!?) This will start from 30 October – but bear in mind that not every bank or building society will be ready till the end of 2018 – so stay vigilant. To celebrate all things cheque related, here’s a few of my favourite myths and facts:
Do you still have a dusty old cheque book lurking around in a drawer somewhere? Maybe it’s gathering dust with that paying in book you last used in 1997. It’s easy to think that cheques are things of the past – but last year 477 million were issued in the UK. So, cheques are clearly still being used way more widely than as an occasional gift from your great aunt. It’s just been announced that banks are finally agreeing a new clearing system that should allow cheques to clear in one day instead of the current six. It comes as a surprise to people when they find out how the current clearing system actually works – and why it takes up to 6 working days to clear a cheque. When you pay your cheque in, a ludicrously complicated system starts, that involves posting (yes posting) cheques to clearing centres, scanning them, contacting the other bank, double checking everything (and looking for fraudulent cheques and drafts), confirming the money is there and so on. This is known as the ‘2-4-6 timescale’ because on day 2 you start to get interest on the money, on day 4 you can technically withdraw the cash, but only on day 6 can you be sure it won’t bounce. And it’s that last point that’s the killer. Many, many people contact me each year after selling a car or other big items through auction websites, think a cheque or draft they’ve received has cleared then get a nasty surprise after they’ve handed over their goods and the cheque bounces. The new rules cut out all the faffing of sending
• Cheques are old: The rules about cheques date back to 1882 and the basic principles have stayed more or less the same. • In principle, you could write a cheque on anything, as long as you included the details mentioned in the Bills of Exchange Act. Many people swear blind that a man once wrote a cheque on a cow but I’m afraid it’s an urban myth - though plenty of people have tried to use a cow-cheque as a publicity stunt over the years. Fraud rules now mean standard cheques must be used so your bank won’t be in the moo-d if you bring a cow in. • Cheques didn’t used to have expiry dates, leading to some tricky situations where people tried to cash old one’s years later. Most now come with a 6-month expiry date. • You can’t ‘post-date’ cheques either. Well, you can, but most banks will ignore cheques that have a date on in the future and will just process them. Lots of people used to postdate cheques back in ‘the old days’ but it was generally the person or business who received the cheque who held on to it till the date in question. • Fraudsters love cheques. By far the most widespread scams involve exploiting the clearing cycle to get sellers to release goods in exchange for stolen or forged banker’s drafts and cheques. Never release goods paid for by cheque until your bank confirms that the payment has cleared. Fling Festival 2017
Fling Festival returns to Hylands Park, Chelmsford on Saturday 1 July, 2017.
The Fling is like no other, curated purely for adults with curiosity encouraged, and featuring a diverse mix of entertainment including music, comedy, theatre, cabaret, crafts, burlesque, curious sideshows, food, drinkand more. This year’s festival includes a main stage headline performance from legendary British band, The Blockheads, who are bestknown for their hits singles, recorded with original lead singer Ian Dury; Billericay Dickie, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Reasons to be Cheerful Part 3, plus their hugely successful Number One song, Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick. Other headline performances includea very special spoken word set from the original punk poet, the Bard of Salford, Dr John Cooper Clarke. Not only is he adored across Europe as an elder statesman of subversive art but, also proves his relevance is as strong today with regularly features on TV shows Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Would I Lie To You. Headlining this year’s comedy stage is the charismatic motor-mouth, Seann Walsh. Regarded as one of the most
exciting new acts on the circuit who’s assured delivery and self-depreciating silliness has won over critics, promoters and audiences up and down the country and on TV. On top of this there is a World Exclusive BBC 6 Music DJ battle with Steve Lamacq Vs Shaun Keaveny, the return of the award winning Cabaret host, Dusty Limits, and performances from the world of Cirque du Soleil. And not forgetting the usual Fling favourites; Silent Disco, Horse World, Bollywood tent, Fire Garden and the craft making Rubbish to Treasure. This year promises to be the best yet with more bars, more walkabout fun, and more surprises lined up to satisfy, entertain and wow the crowds. VIP, Tier 1 and Tier 2 have sold out. The last & final tier is currently on sale. For up-to-date festival information, including exciting announcements coming up over the next few weeks please visit the official website www.FlingFestival.com, or follow the social media pages, facebook.com/flingfestival, twitter.com/flingfestival
The Fling Festival is produced by Chelmsford City Council Events and Engagement Team with support from Essex & Suffolk Water..
