Welcome

Hello and welcome to February’s edition of Around Town magazine. As I write this (towards the end of January) the snow has just started to melt and I hope we can now begin to welcome the start of milder, sunnier weather into our Essex lives (probably wishful thinking, but we can hope). In this edition we’d like to welcome a few of new advertisers onboard with us – The Laughing Pod is a new comedy night set to take Billericay by storm on Sunday 10th February at the Ivory Rooms (should be good for a laugh!) Chantry Electrical Services are on hand to assist with any domestic and commercial needs you might have. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, why not take advantage of the 10% discount exclusively available to Around Town at the new Lord of London Jewellery store in Billericay High Street, as well as all the great restaurants and pubs who are offering gorgeous food for the special day and throughout of the month. With the snow disappearing, Revive Paving can improve and restore the look of any patio or driveway – give them a call. Kelly’s back! She has reported on a couple of likely lads who’ve written their own noir comic book! Also revealed are the secrets to a long and happy marriage. Essex Wildlife Volunteer Neil Sumner shines a light on the surrounding wildlife and Rev. Paul Carr compares Feasting or Fasting? Please remember to mention AROUND TOWN when responding to adverts. If you have any feedback on Around Town magazine or would like to contribute editorial, please contact stuart@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk for more details.

A New Year, a renewed focus for Billericay Rugby Club As we enter 2013, the Billericay Rugby Football Club (BRFC) committee have renewed their pledge to make the development of Youth Rugby in Billericay their primary focus. For four decades, BRFC have deďŹ ed the odds to put out 3 teams most Saturdays and at a highly competitive level but this is not a sustainable model for an aspiring rugby club. Therefore in 2008, we embarked upon a journey to develop a fully functioning youth section, something that does not happen overnight and takes an immense level of commitment from club members and volunteers. We set ourselves the target of 10 years and are pleased to announce that we are ahead of schedule, with 7 age groups (under 6 to under 12) up and running in four and a half seasons with half an under 13 squad joining this season and needing reinforcement. We plan to add an age group each year until we have the full age range of under 6 to under 17. Our youth teams play or train every Sunday morning from 10am at our Willowbrook Ground on Stock Road (behind Stock Tennis Club) and it is a real hive of activity. As a club, we would like to extend public thanks to all of the club members and parents who have rolled their sleeves up and volunteered as coaches, age group secretaries, caterers and just for bringing the kids to training every week. Without them, we would not be on the verge of a brighter future and the family atmosphere around the club these days is truly appreciated by all. Like most clubs trying to build, we are always on the lookout for players (young and old!), coaches, volunteers, supporters, sponsors and community links. We welcome those interested to visit our website for the relevant information and contact details: www.pitchero.com/clubs/billericay The most important thing is that the people of Billericay know that they have a Rugby Club that offers youth rugby... so please join us in spreading the word!

Comic Book Heroes It’s around about this time of year when new years resolutions begin to wane and fade into insignificance, but for two film lovers from Billericay that certainly wasn’t the case. Marc Crane, 29 and Mike Young, 30 aka ‘Mike & Craney’ had been talking of creating a graphic book for around 5 years when they finally set their new years resolution a couple of years back to get on with it. And they did. ‘LIL’, now into its sixth issue, is a noir comic book series that has been acknowledged globally and recently dubbed as ‘a gritty, exciting and highly professional noir comic’ in US reviews. I tracked down graphic designer, Craney, to congratulate him and to delve into the making of ‘LIL’. He explained, “We came up with a simple idea on the spot and ran with it. ‘LIL’ is a series about a girl who doesn’t respect herself much and doesn’t have much going for her in life. We wanted to make her an anti-hero. One day she finds a bag full of photos that a strange stalker has taken of her throughout her life. It’s a dark and creepy story that is full of twists and turns. It gets a bit crazy”. Mike & Craney, who attended Billericay school together, are not your typical ‘comic book geeks’. With a slight interest in the Japanese comic style Manga, both are much more into films with Asian sci-fi and Hitchcock’s work being particular favourites and influences. “We take our story boards to the pub, usually The Blue Boar and work on them there. We come up with the storyline together but Mike is the scriptwriter and I illustrate. We went at around 4pm on Christmas eve and got so involved in it, totally lost track of time and the next thing we knew it was 10pm and we couldn’t even move. The first issue was released around a year ago and it usually takes us a couple of months to turn one around. It’s just amazing that we’re getting recognized for something we love doing. It’s our passion”. Mike & Craney are working towards printing ‘LIL’ after 10 issues have been released. For now though, you can read ‘LIL’ on w w w. l i l c o m i c . c o . u k . Issue 6 will be released at the end of February. By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume.

My favourite winter days are those when it is bright and crisp and still. With the leaves now gone, it is much easier to see birds in the trees and hedges, so this is a good time to look for our resident birds. By standing quietly in the woods and listening, you might hear the light tapping of a great spotted woodpecker as its digs for insect larvae. If you can spot it, its black, white and red colours are stunning in the winter sunshine. I was once told that the great spotted woodpecker indicates that a woodland has a healthy mix of wildlife, because it needs mature trees with a variety of insects. Our local woods must be very healthy as this bird is very common locally nowadays. Some of you will be lucky enough to see one in your garden. But it is not good news for all woodland birds. Another woodpecker, the lesser spotted, has declined, along with some of the woodland tit and finch species. We still don’t fully understand why this is. We know that in some woods deer browsing and a lack of management have removed much of the lower storey vegetation on which some wildlife depends. But even in healthy woods we have suffered losses. Cold wet springs and harsh winters have an impact but populations usually recover within a few years. The research continues. Nature cannot exist in a box. This is another factor affecting wildlife. Our nature reserves are small oases but often surrounded by areas which are unsuitable for many species. Wildlife needs stepping stones and corridors of friendly habitat so that it can move around to feed and to reproduce. If one wood loses its dormice in a bad year then other dormice need hedgerows to be able to travel to it as the population recovers. Ponds need to be well-distributed so that newts and frogs can travel and find new locations. Reptiles and small mammals need to move through grassy field margins to find mates. This is why our main conservation organisations are not just managing their nature reserves; they are also working with the public and landowners to improve areas between the reserves. We call these areas Living Landscapes. In our locale, volunteers are working with Essex Wildlife Trust and other organisations, including councils, the RSPB, Essex and Suffolk Water and many landowners to help restore, reconnect and recreate important habitat for wildlife. If you do see a great spotted woodpecker it is worth reflecting not just on its natural beauty, but on the part it plays in the life in and around the wood. Whilst it is a predator of insects, its excavations also provide places for them to lay eggs and an old nest can even provide a home to a colony of bees. Some insects are essential in controlling pests and pollinating our plants. And the woodland not only hosts useful wildlife, it filters air and water, and provides us with useful material. Our natural world is not a luxury and not just a place for relaxation and leisure; we are totally dependent on it for clean air, for clean water and for growing our food. The Season of Lent: Feasting or Fasting? Ash Wednesday is celebrated on 13th February this year. It falls 40 Days before Good Friday and commemorates Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness when he the shaped the vision for his ministry and mission through prayer and fasting. It became the practise on the day before, now known as Shrove, or pancake, Tuesday, to ‘use up’ some of the more flamboyant ingredients in the kitchen before beginning a period of frugal living. The word Lent in Latin means ‘spring’ - the season of new life and of growth out of the darkness and dormancy of winter. Lent, for some, is a time for ‘navel gazing’ and truthful honesty about the state of their lives - both morally and ethically. Lent, for others, provides a welcome opportunity to nurture their spiritual lives. And still, for others, Lent provides a focus to practice some form of abstinence (you know: chocolate, alcohol, TV etc.) or a less indulgent lifestyle – especially after the excesses of the Christmas season. Jesus’ Lenten focus was the transformation of the world and, given the constant stream of depressing stories of political unrest, violence and sectarianism on our news programmes and in our newspapers, I’m sure you’d agree that the world is need of transformation. And, whilst not one of us would ever lay claim to transforming the world, each of us can transform the world in which we live by both Fasting AND Feasting, for example:

Fast From

Judging others Discontentment Words that pollute Anger Pessimism Worry Complaining Negative thoughts Idle gossip Bitterness Self concern Discouragement

Feast On

Loving others Gratitude Words that cleanse Patience Optimism Divine providence Appreciation Positive thoughts Prayerful silence Forgiveness Compassion for others Hope

And so I could go on – make up your own list! May your feasting on good things this Lent lead you to transform the world in which you live and the lives of those around you – just as Jesus did for us 2000 years ago. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

Tucked away, parallel to Billericay High Street, this pub and restaurant is central to local life. Complementing the food is a selection of five real ales, including Sharp’s Doom Bar, and quality wines such as Murphy’s Shiraz. Sunday lunch here is considered to be one of the best in Billericay and, just like the restaurant itself, is very popular. We all know that Billericay isn’t short of chain restaurants that line the High Street, but tucked away down Old Barn Court lies the charming Italian, La Toscana. The name is a play on the word ‘Tuscany’, from where the owner originates. The restaurant’s endearing, cottage-like appearance is something that has always caught my eye walking past and so my fiancé, Joe and I decided to check it out. Upon arrival, the restaurant manager greeted us graciously and a smiley waitress promptly offered to take our coats. The minimalist, monochrome dining area is warmed with blocks of red and softened with gentle music, low lighting and very comfy seats. Having been served our drinks we were given time to look over the diverse menu by mellow candlelight. To start, I opted for the ‘Funghi Ripieno’. A succulent mushroom topped with rich, melted Dolcelatte, buttered spinach and fresh rocket, lightly drizzled in a salty tomato pesto. It was a punchy starter and the perfect portion to whet my appetite without being too heavy. Joe chose the ‘Calamari’, which was served with Mediterranean vegetables. He noted the dish was fresh, tender and perfectly cooked. The place quickly filled up with couples, friends and families but the relaxed and seamless service never faltered. Despite being busy, the manager had time to personally attend to all his diners and came over and chatted with us for a time between courses. He recommended Joe’s main of pork fillet wrapped in Parma ham to balance out his fish starter. As his empty plate suggested, he said the pork was moist and complemented by the sweet and salty flavour of the ham. I had a generous serving of ‘Spaghetti Marinara’. I’m partial to seafood and this dish did not disappoint. The squid and prawns were meaty and plentiful and the muscles were something quite special, infused in garlic and all tossed in the chef’s own light tomato sauce. The wine was flowing and so was the romance, La Toscana is the ideal venue for a lavish evening with somebody special. It offers more than a touch of class with an extra sparkle of luxury, set apart from the samey, reproduced feel of the branded eateries that surround it. And if not for the sumptuous setting you should go for the devilish dessert menu! Joe was very excited that his favourite, cheesecake, featured on the list and polished off a bountiful wedge of it in all its creamy, crumbly glory. However, I was lured in by the indulgent ‘Chocolate Nemesis’; A sexy slice of dark and dreamy chocolate heaven, dripping in a sultry raspberry sauce. 85% cocoa! Simply divine!

This elegant little gem really is an alternative to anything else Billericay has to offer. La Toscana is friendly and faultless and we will definitely be returning. TO ADVERTISE IN AROUND TOWN MAGAZINE PLEASE CALL 01277 658444 by Kelly Plume
