We have all the latest news from the Rotary, Lions and Round Table, while Rev. Paul Carr is celebrating 21 years of the Emmanuel Church! Slimming World Fathers Day
Sunday 16th June is dedicated to all Dads who are with us and all those who are sadly no longer. It’s a day for us to celebrate, remember and thank them for all they give and teach us. This got me thinking about my family and the Dad’s I unfortunately never got to meet.

My Great Grandad, Reynold Mander was born in 1914 and moved to Billericay as a teenager. Ren joined Billericay Ambulance Station at St Andrews Hospital and got promoted to head driver before going to war in 1939, where he served in Italy and North Africa. Upon his return to Billericay he rejoined the station and grew to be Divisional Officer for all stations in Essex and one of the most influential ambulance officers in the UK, leaving a lasting impression on many ambulance services in South East England.

His son, Dave Mander, recalls “My Dad was such a kind and patient man and someone who people would turn to, everyone on the Sunnymede estate would call on him if they had a problem. Dad was a true family man and loved bringing the whole family together. I remember Christmases where the floors would be covered in mattresses in our little Mons Avenue bungalow where all the family would be over to stay, they were wonderful times.” My Great Grandad was with the ambulance service for 40 years and sadly passed away at 67, two years after his retirement. In his memory, there was a ‘Mander Trophy’ given to the most clean and tidy ambulance station in Essex, which his wife Mary would present them with each year for 15 years after he died. Dave said “I was never as good a Dad as he was, but I have tried to be. I hope I have his heart though. He had a heart of gold and it was always in the right place”. Nothing beats a Lions Tour For those uninitiated in the folklore of the Lions…it is special. With only the Ryder Cup in golf offering a sporting comparator, for over one hundred years the British and Irish Lions has brought together the best players from four rugby nations (England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland) and pitted them against one of the three southern hemisphere rugby powerhouses (Australia, New Zealand or South Africa).
Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ
Players who spend every February/March beating seven bells out of each other in the Six Nations, come together every four years for a tour which is considered to be the pinnacle of any professional rugby player’s career both above and below the equator. Those wishing to understand a little bit more about what goes on during a Lions tour should pick up a copy of the 1997 ‘Living with Lions’ DVD which offers behind the scenes footage of one of the best Lions tours in recent history. A highlight is Lions coach Jim Telfer (a Lion himself during the 60’s) addressing the players prior to the first test and telling them that this is “their Everest” in one of the best sporting speeches of all time….not to mention some enjoyable player-cam moments which aren’t as restrained as those from more recent tours. So, four years have now passed since the British and Irish Lions toured South Africa in 2009, where they lost the first two tests and won the third, resulting in a 2-1 series defeat to the then World Champions. This summer, the Lions tour Australia and rugby fans across the globe are excited at the prospect of a resurgent Australia team taking on a strong Lions squad which has both class and depth. Billericay Rugby Club members, family and friends will be enjoying the matches on the big screens at our Willowbrook clubhouse….and as ever you are all invited to join us to enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on the Lions. We will post information on our website nearer the time but have included the dates of the test matches (where the Lions take on the Australian National team after warm up matches against invitational and provincial teams) so that you can add them to your calendars: First Test - Saturday 22nd June – 11am (GMT) Second Test - Saturday 29th June – 11am (GMT) Third Test – Saturday 6th July – 11am (GMT)
COME AND WATCH
AT YOUR LOCAL
RUGBY CLUB
In the meantime, we wish you an enjoyable spring/start to the summer and look forward to By Around Town Correspondent B.Ranger seeing you in June for the best that Rugby has to offer.

BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875
Billericay’s Around Town Magazine - 1/2 page A5, June 2013 Starting on a somber note, in April Billericay CC said farewell to club member Tony Archer who passed away following a battle against cancer. His wake filled the clubhouse with his many friends and council colleagues. A larger than life and often controversial person who always stimulated debate, Tony’s presence and contribution will be sadly missed. The 1st XI started the season well with a win against Horndon in the opening friendly match of the season and this was followed up by a convincing cup victory over SNEL 3rd division club Old Parkonians setting up a second round match away against local rivals Wickford who are in SNEL division 1. The bowlers started well reducing a strong Wickford side that included former Essex players Robert Rollings and Darren Robinson to 80 for 5 before the match was interrupted by rain. This disrupted the momentum of the game and Wickford recovered to score 200 from their allotted 40 overs. The Billericay response got off to a poor start at 6 for 2 but recent newcomer from Edmonton Dave Hennigan (52) and New Zealander Dave Houghton (26) steadied the innings and at 100 for 2 off 20 overs Billericay were well set. However some excellent spin bowling from Wickford restored the advantage to the home club who eventually ran out as comfortable winners. This was a credible performance by Billericay against stronger opposition and showed them the task they face should they gain promotion from SNEL division 2 this season. The league season starts on May 11 away to Old Southendians with home fixtures every other week from May 18. Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground. www.billericaycc.co.uk Blunts Wall Road, Billericay, CM12 9SA

Saturday 6th July will welcome adults from 18 to 80+ to enjoy an intriguing alternative to the usual night on the town. Between 12noon and 11pm in Central Park, Chelmsford, join a fabulous cast of professional artistes and Essex talent to explore, seduce and surprise your senses through performances, sideshows, poetry, a huge silent disco and much more. The Fling offers an intriguing alternative to the usual night out and alongside playful activities. The Fling is about the magnitude of small wonders you’ll discover but the festival has already secured some great headline music acts. The Correspondents are a duo of musical mixologists who, with their high speed scatting and incredulous dance moves earned them The Telegraph’s Top Ten Highlights of Glastonbury two years in a row. Janice Long of Radio One said of Public Service Broadcasting that they were ‘Amazing, I absolutely love it – fantastic!’ and have gone on to win accolades on 6 Music and elsewhere. The third act to be announced for The Fling, with dozens more to come, is Extra Curricular, a group that combine soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture. They’ve been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven music on the UK underground live circuit since early 2009 and their live show is something to be witnessed. We’re also very pleased to announce that the fantastic By The Rivers will be performing. Hailed as ‘reggae for a new generation’, this sensational six-piece are sure to get you in the party mood!

BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB Rotary is an international organisation that is dedicated to raising funds to assist worthy causes. Internationally Rotary has driven the eradication of Polio by funding a worldwide inoculation programme and provides shelter boxes to assist survival immediately after a disaster. Individual clubs offer local community and charity fund raising events and support local causes. At the Mayflower club preparations are well underway for Summerfest on Sun Corner on Sunday July 14 and yes also for Christmas Market in the High Street on Sunday Dec 1. Funds raised from these events will go to support this year’s major local project at Thriftwood School, which is seeking to provide education for special needs children from ages 15 to 18. New members are welcome to join us. In addition to charity fund raising there is a social programme of fun events to be enjoyed with like minded friends. We meet in Rose Hall, Chapel Street at 8pm on Thursdays. Google: Mayflower Rotary Billericay or email: rarackham@btopenworld.com
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Welcome to the Lions corner of Around Town. The club elections are now over and all the officers for the forthcoming year are almost in place. Next year our President is Trevor Hull, a keen golfer and a Lion for just 4 years! Although President Trevor will have the experience of all of us ‘older’ members to fall back on he is looking forward to the new year with just a little fear and trepidation, wondering what’s in store for him. The other officers will slide smoothly into place and keep the wheels of the club turning as usual. Indeed, new fund raising events and social outings are already in the pipeline with letters and emails flying in all directions!
The 4th Billericay Beer Festival held on June 28th – 30th at the Football Club sees out the end of the old year and we expect it be bigger and better than ever. Over 50 real ales and ciders will be available to taste, up to 9 bands will be playing throughout the weekend and there will be hot curries of all sorts to whet your appetites! Why not try it and meet all of the local Lions? For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
At the grand old age of 45 all members of Round Table are chucked out as they are clearly too old to be of any use to anyone. We like to kick them out in style so they remember what a lovely bunch of YOUNG blokes they are going to miss when they’re sitting at home with their pipe and slippers or sitting with the rest of the Ex-Tablers club members (see link below). Kev Mesnard is joining the ranks of old gits after a pretty impressive 22 years in Round Table. Billericay Round Table now have a new chairmen for the coming year, welcome Scott Gobellie. It’s always nice to welcome a new chairman and I know he is very excited about his role. ”This year I intend to expand on Round Tables efforts in supporting local events as well as supporting the local specialist groups as best we can”. We recently had the pleasure of donating £2000 to Synergy (www.synergytherapycentre.com) who provide support to local people suffering from unhealthy dependencies such as alcohol, drugs and gambling. The bookstall is now open each Saturday (weather permitting) from 11am until 1pm outside the Red Lion pub. Please come and say hello. Neill Tobin, 36, always wanted to be an electrician and the day after he left school he did just that and went to work with his Dad at Chantry Electricals in Billericay. “My Dad started the business in 1970 and in the school holidays and at weekends I used to help out before joining in 1993.” Cat lover and indie music fan Neill believes that it’s your local traders who will always deliver the best job. “People should support their local trades if they care about putting money back into their community and getting a decent job done, it brings in repeat work and keeps business alive”. It was a compressed spring this year, as the cold weather lingered long into April. After a warm spell, the cold winds returned but the wildlife had to soldier on with breeding. On a cold and windy morning in mid-May with the thermometer at 5 degrees all the starlings of north Billericay seemed gathered on the grasslands around Queens Park and Stock Brook, collecting crane-ies for their young who waited patiently in the eaves of those houses that still accommodate them. Some would return to the nest and ďŹ nd a crow or magpie sitting on a nearby roof, so they itted around, churring anxiously, with beak full of insects, not willing to give the nest site away until the predator moved on. From May to June, the woodland owers fade and it is the turn of those in the grasslands. Mill Meadows is my favourite spot, where we can ďŹ nd great numbers of common spotted and heath orchids, patches of white oxeye daisy, pink ragged robin, yellow tormentil and birds-foot trefoil and many more. When we ďŹ nally get some warmer weather, butteries will be more common in these areas too, with the ďŹ rst of meadow browns, ringlets, skippers and common blues emerging. Sadly, we have no great expectations of good numbers of butteries this year. Last year’s wet summer has had an effect and the results of buttery counting in England show that more than 50 species declined between 2011 and 2012. The fortunes of butteries can vary from month to month, however. We conduct counts on Mill Meadows and, one year, June yielded a paltry 3 (it’s embarrassing and rather sad when the counters nearly outnumber the butteries), but in July a hot day gave us a hearty 189! More of that please. Neilsumner123@aol.com follow me twitter.com/neilsumner123

Celebrations! We all love a celebration don’t we? Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, you name it we easily find an excuse to crack open the bubbly, light up the BBQ or put on our ‘glad rags’ for a night out. Celebrations and hospitality are an important part of our social gathering. They strengthen our relationships; make significant contributions to our well being; and, in an age of ‘impersonal’ social networking, they help to rekindle the lost art of conversation and community. Jesus spent a significant amount of time ‘eating, drinking and celebrating!’ In fact, Jesus rarely said no to an invitation for a meal and many of the significant episodes in Jesus’ life, and a great amount of his teaching, took place around a celebration which usually involved food. You may remember some of them: The Wedding at Cana, the Feeding of the Five Thousand, and the Last Supper. Here at Emmanuel we celebrate our 21st Birthday in June (yes, amazing isn’t it?) and we want to invite YOU to join with us on: Saturday 15th June from 3.00pm: A Family Time event in the church grounds - including a Bouncy Castle; Hog Roast; BBQ; Games; Craft Activities and more! Saturday 15th June at 5.30pm: ‘Magic You Will Never Forget’ with Steve Legg - this amazing magic and comedy show is suitable for ALL ages! Sunday 23rd June at 10.30am: Family Communion with ‘After The Fire’ – who will lead us in an accessible, inspirational and unique Service of Thanksgiving for our 21st Birthday. In addition, Churches Together in Billericay, after the success of last year, are hosting another ‘Fun in the Park’ celebration at Lake meadows on Sunday 30th June from 12.30pm onwards which will be another excellent community event. All of these are great opportunities to have an enjoyable ‘free’ day out, meet new friends and, who knows, you may have reason to celebrate learning a little more about the one who gave up his life to become a friend to the friendless. With my very best wishes to you all Revd Paul A. Carr Emmanuel Church, Billericay Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

Billericay Pubs Speak Out About High Street Licensing Regulations The longest standing businesses in Billericay High Street agree with residents and councillors that there is no need for any more alcohol licenses in their town centre. In a recent interview John Baron, Billericay MP, expressed fears of the High Street turning into a ‘Pub Alley’ in light of new applications for food and drink licenses. Dominoes, a recent addition to Billericay, are open until 2am every night. Earlier this month, new off license ‘Billericay Wine Cellar’ was refused an alcohol license until 2am at the weekend but is instead open until 11:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Last month, Basildon Council proposed that they use taxpayers money to buy empty properties in the town centre in a ploy to reduce ‘noise pollution and anti-social behavior’ and to crack down on pubs, bars and takeaways. Phill Turner, Deputy Leader of Basildon Council said, “In Billericay, people are sensing that we have too much leisure”. Lance Roberts, Landlord of The Railway Hotel, who operates a 25 and over policy, said, “There is enough to do in the High Street for people to have a comfortable social life”. John Buchanan, leader of Billericay Council explained. “Billericay residents are our main priority and we need to ensure we do our best to protect them. There is no need for anywhere to be open beyond pub closing times as this just encourages trouble”. Becky Leeding, 23, manageress at The Red Lion said, “People are louder when they are drunk full stop. Most pubs existed here before the houses surrounding them. If you manage your pub correctly you can control all the factors that cause problems. We, like many other pubs, have doormen and keep to strict opening hours. We don’t need anymore competition in the high street as far as pubs and bars are concerned”. The Chequers, otherwise known as ‘the best pub in Billericay’ has been under the watch of Cath Thwaites-Hunter for over 13 years and is proof that long opening hours and cheap prices are not the only ways to bring in punters. Cath, who is currently the longest serving landlady in the High Street explained “In my opinion it is a terrible shame that the high street is turning into a no go area for some elderly citizens due to the amount of bars now. I feel big chains like Wetherspoons ruin towns by encouraging a binge drinking culture with cheap prices. I don’t even operate a happy hour because I disagree with plying people with drink. Midnight is too late for a pub to be open but if I didn’t stay open until that time I would lose customers. The High Street would be a far more pleasant place if all pubs shut at 11pm again. People don’t come to my pub because it’s cheap or open the latest, just to have a few drinks in an enjoyable atmosphere I would hope.” Basildon council claim they are able to borrow money at a better rate than the public are, to purchase these properties and are currently working on a business plan for the project. Dave Ripo, Landlord at The Crown, said, “I think the money could be spent on better things. It’s the fault of the council that we have too many bars and restaurants, all they have to do is say no to people, they don’t have to buy places. It’s great when businesses come to the High Street but we need more of a balance.” What do you think - Do we have enough leisure establishments in Billericay or should we welcome new business to the town? Should they be restricted to opening times at weekends? Email your thoughts to: sales@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or write in to the usual address (p.4). By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume.
