What an interesting season Billericay 1st XI face this year. After 5 games every team in the league has lost 2 games demonstrating what an open league this is with everyone capable of beating everyone else. After 4 games Billericay were top having won 3 and lost 1 but a big defeat by Belhus on June 8th mean that as we go to press they are 3rd, but with only 2 points separating the first and fifth clubs there is still much to play for and the team that can gain some consistency will triumph. The 2nd XI are currently second in their division having chased down a total of 275 with a Dan Harford ton on June 8th and the 3rd and 4th XIs continue to prosper under new captains Mike Owens and Harvey Moyne being second and first in their respective divisions. On July 22 the club hosts a match between a team of touring Australian Rotarians and an England Rotary XI. Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground. Upcoming 1st XI home games are: June 15 Horndon, June29 Leigh, July 13 Belhus See www.billericaycc.co.uk for more details of joining and to hire the clubhouse for parties or wakes where the views over the Essex countryside and substantial parking provide an excellent setting. www.billericaycc.co.uk Blunts Wall Road, Billericay, CM12 9SA

Well, the big countdown is now underway for schools to break up for summer! And if not for you then definitely for your children and grandchildren (and their teachers no doubt) who are almost certainly crossing off each day until the 6 weeks holidays…or is it 7 now? Over the summer there is plenty going on around town to for kids to get involved in and I have shortlisted my top three options for you. Tucked away in Radford Crescent, Billericay is one of the leading karate clubs in the UK. The great thing about Yushikai Karate Academy is that it caters for all abilities for anybody aged 4 and up, with Tiger Clubs for the younger children. In August the club will be running a 4day Karate Kids Summer school for kids who have an interest in this martial art. Chief Instructor Dave Paulus and the other teachers at Yushikai academy regularly hold workshops and classes at local primary and secondary schools. If I could relive my school summer holidays I would definitely be found in Rocky’s Fun House, Western Road, Billericay, AKA Kid heaven! Rocky’s Fun House is a big crazy bouncy world where your children can let off some steam while you sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee. In August Rocky’s are holding three big fun days including a bubble discowith a touch of magic thrown in, an animal day,

giving your children a chance to get up close and personal with animals including snakes and even skunks! And a dance mania day! All dates and details can be found on their website and Facebook page. Jo D’Unienville at Dance Steps Academy has collaborated closely with existing clients and parents to plan a fabulous four-week scheme during the summer holidays for 3-10 year olds that will be held from 10am-2pm every Tuesday and Thursday. The days will involve a whole host of dance activities. There will be themed days, picnics, cooking and arts and crafts. She has arranged for the local dog trust to bring in some furry friends to meet the kids and also arranged similar with an animal shelter. Jo explained “It’s so important for organizations like us to be aware of what our local children and parents want and need, which is why we work closely and on a personable level with our clients to ensure we give them the most we possibly can.” By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

Preparation is Nine Tenths It’s late June and whilst we haven’t yet enjoyed any weather that vaguely resembles summer, the Lions have won the first test and pre-season training is due to start for Billericay Rugby Club’s players in a couple of weeks.
Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ
Next season promises to be a tough test for all three of Billericay RFC’s adult teams and winning on the pitch starts long before the first whistle from a referee. Many of us have been putting in some time in the gym or clocking up some miles on bike or foot. Others have taken the more measured approach and spent some time on the sofa… Either way, in early July, we will come together again to face the ladder drills, circuits, bag hitting sessions and laps around the pitch that will make us that bit sharper on the pitch. Whilst we all moan and groan when the coaches take the rugby ball away and replace it with a stopwatch, we’d be lying if we said that we weren’t happy to be back training and having a laugh with the boys. Those who said that the previous season was their last will realise that they are a long time retired and miss their mates, whilst there will hopefully be some new players who will add some competition for places. If there are any former rugby players reading this who have realised that retirement doesn’t suit them or sportsmen who have been inspired by the Lions to take up Rubgy then please come and join us for a few laps and some coach cursing from 7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from the start of July. As you will see when you get there...it is never too late for a challenge! Billericay RFC – Stock Road (behind Stock Tennis Club).

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB June is a busy month in Rotary. With the Rotary year ending on June 30th preparations are made to handover the presidency on July 1st. The incoming president for 2013/14 is Gavin Taylor and his team presented their proposals to the club for a busy programme of fund raising activities and charity projects on June 6th. The major local project this year is to support Thriftwood School in establishing a sixth form college for special needs pupils. Internationally the club will continue to support Shelter Box and received a presentation from one of their deployment officers the previous week. Shelter Box is a survival kit that includes a 12 person tent and all the essentials required to survive after a major catastrophe such as an earthquake, hurricane or tsunami. These boxes are the first aid on the scene and deployment officers have to undergo a strict selection process akin to an SAS survival course before putting their health and lives at risk by being the first assistance to arrive at the scenes of destruction. June 7th saw the inaugural Mayflower golf day at Burstead GC raising funds for Thriftwood School and on June 8th members gave their time at the Basildon car park with a ‘bucket shake’ to raise donations. The same evening president for 2012/13 Ganesh hosted a farewell drinks and buffet at Stock Village Hall. Meanwhile preparations continue for Summerfest at Sun Corner on July 14th and on July 22nd the Mayflower club hosts a cricket match at Billericay CC between a team of touring Australian Rotarians and an England Rotarian XI. New members are welcome to join us. In addition to charity fund raising there is a social programme of fun events to be enjoyed with like minded friends. We meet in Rose Hall, Chapel Street at 8pm on Thursdays. Google: Mayflower Rotary Billericay or email: rarackham@btopenworld.com
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB As it is the end of our year our AGM was held in earlier in June where it transpired that over £18,300 has been allocated to local worthy causes. This has been something of a record in recent years as we have slowly increased our reserves from such events as The Beer Festival, The Taste of quizzes our postal quizzes and of course The Christmas Sleigh – all extremely well supported events by the local community. Recipients included various Children’s Cancer Charities, Senior Citizens concerts, BOSP, St John’s Ambulance, CAB and St Luke’s Hospice. Over 30 local groups were helped and aided all thanks to the generous donations made by local people. A full list of our Charitable donations should be on our website soon. We are still waiting to realise the total profits made from this year’s Beer Festival, as at the time of writing these were unknown. But with over £4700 of sponsorship from local shops and businesses we hope to have had a record year. Now the challenge is for us to emulate recent years’ efforts again in the coming Lionistic year, so watch this space! Already our next Postal Quiz is available online from our website below. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
There has been plenty of social activity over the last four weeks for Billaricay Round Table members and guests who took part in the area quiz in Chelmsford. It got very hot under the collar one night when we visited Billericay fire station, the firefighters demonstrated the seriousness of chip pan fires when they are handled incorrectly. We were then set a ‘Hose Run’ challenge which was to unravel a fire hose and then to roll it up again neatly ready to storage within a limited time. No attempts beat the set time-frame. The tasks demonstrated proves how well trained our fire crew members have to be to cope with the situations they have to manage. A very big thank you for Billericay Fire Service crew. If you would like to come along to our next social which is an Area event, this will be at the Tower Arms in Brentwood on Thursday July 18th when many Round Tables will be playing to win Petanque, this is always a great laugh. eMail : membership@BillericayRoundTable.co.uk to find out more or get a free lift over there. Why not come and say hello to us when we will be supporting the Thingamagig Music Festival at the White Hart on Saturday July 20th. REQUEST: If you have any children’s books (only) that you no longer require can we request you donate them to the Round Table Bookstall which is located next to the Red Lion pub on Saturday from 11am until 1pm. Thank you all very much and we will look forward in meeting you. Please visit : www.Billericay.RoundTable.co.uk

MP BARON ON EU REFERENDUM Following a long campaign by a number of us in Parliament, in January the Prime Minister announced a future Conservative Government will hold an in/out EU referendum in 2017. He deserves great credit for having listened, and for being the first major party leader to make this offer. The trading community we joined in 1973 has fundamentally changed into an organisation bent on political union. This is not why we joined. It is only right that the electorate be given its say on the changing nature of our membership with the EU. However, the Conservatives’ referendum commitment must be both credible and believable. At the moment, it is credible because
By John Baron MP the 2017 referendum will have an ‘out’ option on the ballot paper. But it is not yet believable – voters remain deeply sceptical of politicians making promises on matters European. This is why for over a year many back benchers and I have been pushing for both an in/out referendum in the next Parliament and the necessary legislation in this. Legislation is far more believable than election manifesto promises.
We were disappointed when the Queen’s Speech did not include the required legislation. As a consequence, I tabled an amendment expressing regret that a Referendum Bill was not included. As a result, the Prime Minister not only stated Conservative support for legislation, but also published a draft Bill. This will be taken forward by James Wharton MP as a Private Member’s Bill – the first vote being on 5th July. The problem is we do not know whether Labour and the Liberal Democrats agree with a referendum. Are they with or against the electorate? If you would like to make your view known, please visit www.letbritaindecide. com and make your voice heard.

We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday ... ... No more worries for a week or two? If you are a bit like me, you can’t wait to begin your summer holiday. Some of you, without children at home, may have taken yours already; those of us who have children in school can’t wait until the end of term for the holidays to begin; and some of you will be enjoying what is termed a ‘staycation’ - staying at home to undertake that DIY around the home/garden you’ve been putting off for months or, those of you who are really daring, will put your trust in the British weather as you travel to all corners of the British Isles! Did you know that rest and recuperation from the busyness of life is a Biblical principle and was established by God? We see this in the book of Genesis when, after creating ‘the heavens and the earth’, God rested on the seventh day. This is where the term ‘Sabbath’ comes from, a day of rest – usually on a Sunday. Jesus recognised the importance of rest and recovery from the busyness of life and, in the Gospels, was often to be found jumping into a boat and crossing over to the other side of Lake Galilee to ‘escape’ from the crowds. At other times, he would go up to a mountainside to pray. This reminds us that Jesus, as well as being the Son of God, was also human and, just like us, struggled with tiredness and a heavy workload and needed time out to recover. Unfortunately, because of increased working commitments, Sunday trading and Sunday sport, many people do not have the opportunity for a day of rest from their busy routine and often suffer the consequences of this, such as an increase in stress related illnesses and a breakdown in family relationships - which is why a refreshing summer break is so important. I pray that your ‘much needed’ summer holiday, whether at home or aboard, will ‘recharge your batteries’ both emotionally and physically. However, might I also encourage you, in your busy lives, to refresh yourself spiritually, too? Why not plan some Sabbath rest and attend a church near you? You’ll be surprised the difference this can make to your well being. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Revd Paul A. Paul Bartlam, 40, has been his own boss for 18 years now but this hasn’t always been the case. Before starting up his business ‘Premier Painting and Decorating’, Paul was a sales manager but got fed up and bored with working in an office. Quitting his 9-5 was the best decision Paul made. “I look forward to getting up for work everyday now. And especially on a Monday, because you can start a new job on a Monday and everything can be transformed by the end of the week” You may catch petrol head, Paul, riding his quad bike in his spare time or building go-karts. He has lived in Billericay for 5 years and loves working locally. “Billericay is big enough but small enough as well. It’s important to utilize what the town has to offer, it’s got everything you need.” By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

Entertaining, enlightening, spectacular, sometimes gruesome and sad, but not to be missed – that’s my personal take on last month’s Springwatch and I hope many of you feel the same. Thanks to modern technology we are priviledged to witness some of the dramas constantly being played out around us. Much of the habitat of Yns Hir, the mountain, moorland and hanging oakwoods is not found in the Essex landscapes, but we do trump them on wetlands and wide open farmland. We do have many of the species featured on Springwatch including dunnocks, grass snakes, otters - the latter largely due to Wildlife Trust’s Water for Wildlife initiative. But some species survive more easily in one location than another. We very rarely see redstarts locally today but we do see many green woodpeckers, which are disappearing from Wales. Birds of prey held on in Wales during the dark days of DDT when we lost most of ours. Today we have buzzards again and red kite and osprey are being seen now in our county, although the latter will need help with nest platforms if they are to breed. A local bird which really does need our help with nest sites is the kestrel. The very few natural nest holes are often taken up by squirrels so a box in a lone tree close to some hay fields and grassy margins is a blessing. A conservationist from the Chelmsford area has had huge success with kestrel boxes so I have been introducing him to landowners to get more boxes installed. In mid-June we saw a beautiful male, on private land near Stock, carrying small items of prey into the nest tree so he was either feeding his mate or young chicks. Last year most of the young were probably much more advanced at this time when a warm May followed by a wet June must have been good for the rodent population as kestrels – and barn owls for which we have also installed boxes - were very productive. This year, they are later and we expect broods to be smaller. Neither can be described as common but their response to our boxes shows that we can help them and they indicate that there is yet some health in the local food chain.

An Actor’s Life For Me I was lucky to catch Ashley Collin, 24 from Billericay on a rare day off for a quick chat, as he usually works seven days a week balancing his job and his dream. Ashley has an office job in sales, but that’s a far cry from his true passion. From a young age, Ashley has loved performing and is a professional singer, dancer and actor. He explained, “Lots of kids get into dramatics because their Mum wants them to give it a go. With me it just stuck. It was something I was born to do. I specialized in dance until I performed an acting role in front of Harry Enfield as a teenager. He approached me afterwards and told me I had flair for it and that I should focus on theatre. I need a job to pay the bills and on the side I grab as many opportunities as possible to further my career.” Previously, Ashley has performed in the West End and with the London Children’s Ballet Company alongside Wayne Sleep. As well, a singer songwriter, he has auditioned for X Factor numerous times, gigs weekly at local venues including the Ivory Rooms and teaches singing and acting at weekends. Since he was five years old, Ashley has been part of ‘La Danse Fantastique’, a mixed ability performing arts group that has been running for two decades. “LDF are a charity group who currently have around 40 members, ranging from ages 3 to 30. The group welcomes anybody who has a passion for performing. We have members with Down syndrome, dyspraxia, autism and other special needs. “ Cliff Richard has previously been a patron of LDF, who hold assortment of fundraising activities in order to function and put on an annual production. For their 20th Birthday LDF are putting on their biggest performance yet and have raised a staggering £26,000 to do so. They have even recruited John Harland from the Royal Shakespeare Society to volunteer and act alongside them in their outdoor performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream. “I’m delighted to be playing Duke Theseus!
We have never performed on a stage this big before. For one weekend only Westley Heights Country Park will be done out in fairy lights and transformed into an enchanted secret garden, the perfect setting for us. We are all so excited and counting down to the 13th July!!” Ashley is currently completing his teaching qualifications and hopes to become a full time performing arts teacher. ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream – The Musical’ will be showing at Westley Heights, Langdon Hills Country Park on 13th & 14th July. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £9 concessions. You can buy tickets by calling Chris Garland on 07903337061 or online at www.ladansefantastique. uk.com. By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume
