parts of which date back to the 16th century. The Bull has always been a popular watering hole for local residents, myself included, down the years.

MARK FRANCOIS Conservative Parliamentary MP for Rayleigh & Wickford

One doesn’t have to travel far outside of Rayleigh, on the Hockley Road until you come to The Bull, one of the oldest Public Houses in the Rochford District,

6

Tragically, at the start of August, a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning which resulted in a large part of the roof and part (but apparently not all) of the interior being gutted. As this article was being written, investigations were underway to try and ascertain the true extent of the damage but it does seem as if much of the exterior of the pub (excluding the roof) has fortunately survived. As the local MP, I am well aware of how popular The Bull has always been and it is a real asset to the local community, both in Hockley

and further afield as well. With this in mind I wrote shortly after the fire to Mr Rooney Anand, the Chief Executive of Greene King, who own the pub, to put in an early plea that they should seek to rebuild The Bull and restore it to its former glory. (As The Bull is a Grade II listed building great care would have to be taken with any future rebuild, which would probably have to be in character with the original building). This building is an important part of our local heritage and I want to do all I can as the local MP to see it restored and reopened after this terrible event. I hope that in doing so, I will receive the support of my constituents, including in Rayleigh, who I trust would also like to see the Bull survive long into the future.

AEROPHOBIA (Fear of Flying) The majority of us look forward to our holidays, and for a lot of us that means a trip in an aeroplane. For some this does not cause a problem, however, depending on the source it is estimated that around one in six of us suffer from fear of flying, “Aerophobia”, which is a form of anxiety. For some it means a touch of the collywobbles, for others it is a paralysing fear and means not being able to fly at all. Then, there are those who know they suffer from this type of anxiety yet try to put a “brave face” on it and will go through all the preparations; deciding on the destination; obtaining travel insurance; booking the flight and the hotel and then will cancel at the last minute. Sadly, for these sufferers, if they failed to notify their insurers of their fear in advance it could mean any claim made arising from the cancellation being denied as some insurers view the fear of flying as a pre-existing condition. The symptoms of aerophobia are very similar to those of any specific phobia and may include some (or all) of the following: 1) Heart palpitations; 2) Tummy upset; 3) Shaking; 4) A feeling of disorientation; 5) Muddled thinking; 6) Sweating, and possibly 7) Feeling snappy and irritable for no reason. For some suffers there can also be some physical disturbances such as sinus or inner-ear blockage; vertigo leading to dizziness; there may also be some underlining cardiovascular problem which then triggers a concern about developing deep vein thrombosis during a flight. Whilst it is far more dangerous travelling in a car than in an aeroplane, the fact that air crashes are relatively rare, when such an event does happen it is widely reported on all news media, which together with the fact that the aeroplane was carrying hundreds of people makes the event all the more

tragic. Couple this with the all the safety and security measures at the airport, plus the on-board safety demonstrations by the crew, it is not at all surprising that the thought that something bad happening creeps into our minds. The subconscious; the imagination goes into overdrive causing the sufferer to conjure up all kinds of devastating scenarios, each and every one, the suffer “knows” will happen. The dreaded “What If!” game is played over and over. Generally speaking it is rare for a fear of flying to be a stand-alone issue and is usually linked to other forms of anxiety disorder, for example a fear of heights or a fear of enclosed spaces, or indeed a combination of those. Similarly, the actual causes can be far ranging, for example it may be that as a very young child you saw, or heard news of a plane crash; your parents may have been sufferers and you picked up on their fear and trepidation. It may be that you have had a promotion at work which requires you to travel by air more frequently and it may therefore be that your fear of flying is caused by your fears about the promotion and the impact the travelling will have upon your family and social life. Whatever form your fear takes, or whatever the cause of your fear of flying maybe help is at hand. It used to take years of therapy to treat a fear or a phobia, however, there are now a number of different hypnotic and NLP techniques which successfully work on fears and phobias far more quickly; in some cases, as quickly as one session (overcoming the fear of flying can indeed be achieved in one session for many); for example by using an NLP technique known as a “time line” can help to you recognise the origin of the fear and help you to the view that origin from a new, rewarding and powerful perspective. Other cases may require a few more sessions, however, the results are life enhancing. Just think how much better your life would be if you were free from your fear of flying, and then have the freedom to visit all those destinations you could only once dream about.

August Savings Roundup Will the Bank of England Base Rate rise and is this good for savers? At the time of writing, the financial markets are pricing in a 90% likelihood that the Bank of England will raise the base rate from its current level of 0.50%. Base rate hasn’t been above this level for almost a decade – since March 2009. Back then, savers could earn over 6% for putting their money away for a year and 7% for five years. How savers would love a return to those days! By the time you read this, we will know whether the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to raise base rate at its August meeting. Last month saw a 6-3 vote against a rise and we expect the August vote to be a close call. We have a nagging feeling that we may see another month with the base rate unchanged, with concerns about the economy and Brexit being enough to see another month of hold. Regardless of which way the MPC vote, a base rate increase is on the cards very soon. Those with mortgages know that this means an increase in repayments – with those on fixed rates knowing that this only buys them time before an increase hits. What does it mean for savers? This was a question I covered with Simon Read in the Daily Mirror on 31st July. Roll back a decade and the interest rates on savings broadly followed changes to Bank of England base rate. Banks and

10

building societies were often guilty of passing on rises to mortgage holders immediately and somewhat later to savers but there was certainly a correlation. Over the past few years, there’s been a complete decoupling of any connection between savings rates and Bank of England base rate. The government has pumped money in to banks through its Funding for Lending and Term Funding Schemes which has reduced appetite from the larger banks and building societies to price competitively to attract deposits from savers. The void has been filled by a raft of new banks who have entered the savings market since 2009. We’ve seen almost 40 new providers join the savings market in the UK. These banks have competed strongly on price and their demand for savings to fund their lending businesses has spared savers from even worse rates from the historic lows witnessed. It is this competition and demand which is driving savings interest rates and we see little reason why this will change, regardless of any base rate rise, as it has been completely out of sync with base rate for several years. The larger banks and building societies still have more savings deposits than they need and we think they are likely to pass on little or none of the benefit of any base rate increase to their savers, instead using it as an opportunity to improve their profits. Savers hoping for a base rate

increase to improve their returns are therefore likely to be disappointed. Will the regulator intervene in the savings market? At the end of July, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued a discussion paper ‘Price discrimination in the cash savings market’ looking for feedback on various ways it could improve competition in the market. Its chief proposal is to introduce a basic savings rate (BSR) to savers with easy access savings accounts and easy access Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). There is over £1.5trillion of savings in the UK and around half of this is held in either easy access accounts or easy access ISAs. The FCA has found that savers who have held their account for over five years are earning on average 0.82% less than those who have opened their account in the previous two years. In the case of ISAs, the difference is 0.87%. Given that 45% of customers have held their savings account for more than five years, a large number of savers are significantly worse off compared to those who have switched recently. Contrary to popular opinion, loyalty from long term savers is not being rewarded. We will be covering the discussion paper in more detail shortly in a blog on our website. However, we are keen to see savers share their views with the FCA – either directly to the regulator, or with us, which we will collate and provide with our response.

In the meantime, our top six best buys for easy access all pay between 1.25% – 1.31% and we are aware of over twenty accounts in the market paying 1% or more. If your easy access savings are not achieving at least this, we strongly recommend moving them to get a better return on your hard earned money. Don’t wait in hope of a base rate rise or regulatory intervention improving the interest you earn! Business savings rates covered and improvements to the website We’ve been busy making a number of enhancements to our website to help savers. We now cover business savings accounts – easy access, notice and 1 Year Fixed rates – including which types of companies qualify for these accounts. The number of providers covered in our best buys has increased to six in every product category and we have also become the first savings website to provide dedicated coverage to 18 Month Fixed Rate Bonds with their own category. There’s more to come over the summer too! The market can move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. At time of going to print, our best paying personal savings rates are:

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 There is a kind of hush. That’s how a warm still afternoon feels in August. The birds are quiet, many are in moult, replacing old feathers with new, so they hide away quietly in the lush growth. The silence may be broken by the calls of a flock of tits in the woods or chattering swallows above, but the screaming swifts are gone before the month ends. If there is no sound of breeze in the leaves or traffc or aeroplanes you may hear the hum of bees. For bees you often need to look no further than the back garden, as they forage for nectar in summer flowers. Gardens are so important to our wildlife biodiversity. There are 16 million gardens in the UK and the total size is greater than all the nature reserves combined. Gardens can provide homes, feeding areas or just stopovers for wildlife moving through town and countryside. If you have a garden, you can always make some place for nature, however small. A wildlife garden does not have to be untidy. But if you can leave some piles of logs and old branches, even hidden from view, these provide places for insects which in turn provide food for birds. And plants don’t have to native. There are many imports which flower profusely and are loved by our bees and butterflies.

A lawn is good but not essential and even the smallest garden can be an asset, in fact its smallness could provide shelter and hence its own micro climate. A few tubs of flowers, perhaps a bird feeder or even a bug hotel can all give benefit. Water is key and it brings so much more. Just a simple bird bath is a godsend to many birds especially in a long spell of warm dry weather. The smallest of ponds will harbour newts and frogs and, with some well chosen plants with over-hanging leaves, can attract damselflies. It’s a delight to see bright blue azure damselflies and the crimson-coloured small red damselflies hovering over your own little piece of water. Or a larger dragonfly such as a Southern or Migrant Hawker may visit. The latter are prolific in late summer, zapping around woodland edges. Put “wildlife garden” into your search engine and the advice is overwhelming. For a less sedate way to get ideas, you can visit the new wildlife garden at Essex Wildlife Trust in Hanningfield or further afield at the RSPB at Flatford Mill. Neilsumner123@aol.com

Rev’d David Oxtoby

For those who might say “miracles don’t happen today”, well I think our surprise summer has maybe challenged that statement! What a wonderful joy to have some extended periods of sun and warmth, though I recognise this is not to everyones liking, but then we are a nation obsessed with weather, so I can imagine no matter what weather we have then it’ll not suit everyone all the time. Recently I’ve been amazingly blessed to hear about different people’s stories of healing, be that physical, emotional or circumstantial, and yes, many people could argue these are just co-incidences, but I guess there comes a time when there are just a few too many coincidences following somebody praying into a situation, for those answered prayers to simply be dismissed, though of course we equally have the challenge of not having prayers answered. I think I’d rather pray and seek God for His help and involvement, than not pray at all, since if

we don’t pray then we don’t really give God much to work with, but when we do pray, God can, and does intervene; maybe not always in ways we see or understand. In Holy Trinity church I’ve distributed around the Church TryPraying booklets, please do feel free to drop in and pick one up, I mean what have you got to lose? Of course, prayer isn’t about simply coming before God with our shopping list or wish list, as though God is some Genie in a bottle we call upon with a quick rub, and then get upset when God doesn’t respond to our wants in our timescales. Prayer first a foremost is about relationship, about sitting and dwelling in the presence of Jesus, and listening. Prayer is always twoways, but I wonder how often we spend more time listening then we do asking. I’m thrilled we have in Holy Trinity, every morning, the church open for anyone to come in and pray, to light a candle for a loved one, or to simply sit and be still, please do feel free to take advantage of these holy spaces and offer your thoughts and prayers to God. May we all enjoy this wonderful summer, delight in the beauty of creation, and find those moments to simply be still before God, and listen to what He may want to share with us.

ROTARY CLUB OF RAYLEIGH MILL July saw our main fundraising event of the year - The Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill’s annual Charity Golf Day. This year it was played at the Rochford Hundred Golf Club on Monday 9th July in ideal, warm and sunny conditions. The 18-hole Stableford competition was followed by dinner with entertainment from wellknown local comedian, Ian Irvine, prize giving, a raffle and a charity auction. The Team Prize went to The Networking Boys and the overall winner was Kevin Smith. Dave Jarvis, event organiser, estimates that event generated approximately £5700 which will be added to the club’s Charity Fund, the proceeds of which benefit deserving causes locally, nationally and internationally. The nominated Charity this year is The Music Man project which will receive a substantial part of the proceeds of the event. Apart from our regular Monday evening meetings at The Rayleigh Club our club, together with St John Ambulance and with assistance from the Stroke Association held a free Blood Pressure Testing Session in Webster’s Way Car Park on Saturday 21st July when almost 100 people were tested 22 of whom were found to have raised blood pressure levels and were advised by our member Dr Geoff Kittle to seek the advice of their own GP.
