BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875
Two substantial wins against lowly opposition in early August catapulted Billericay CC to third place in the SNEL division 2, 25 points behind leaders Horndon and only 8 points behind second placed Hutton, both teams that Billericay have beaten this year. But a recent heavy defeat to close rivals, Southend has dented Billericay CC hopes of back to back promotions. However, they still hope that they have achieved their first objective of consolidating their place in Division 2 after promotion last year and with the remaining matches being the 50/50 limited over format, Billericay’s strongest form of the game thanks to their depth of bowling attack and a match against Horndon to come, Billericay can still achieve a second successive promotion this year. The 2nd XI maintain leadership of their division, with the 3rd and 4th XIs continuing in top 4 spots in their leagues. On July 28 Billericay hosted the SNEL 20/20 semi finals and final between Brentwood and Ardleigh Green and Chelmsford and Upminster, Brentwood won the competition for the third year in succession going through to the South East regional finals which Billericay CC also hosted on August 11. Bowlers dominated on the day and Banbury were the surprise winners defeating favourites Ealing in the semi final and then second favourites Brentwood, who reached the final with a win over Horsford, in the final. Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground. Upcoming 1st XI home games are: July 27 Old Southendians, Aug 10 Southend-on-Sea and Sep 7 Gidea Park & Romford. See www.billericaycc.co.uk for more details of joining and to hire the clubhouse for parties or wakes where the views over the Essex countryside and substantial parking provide an excellent setting.

BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB After a hectic end to July, August has been a quiet month in Rotary as members enjoy at last a decent UK summer and take holidays. However back room planning continues for future events and plans are well underway for the Bell Boat Race [similar to the better known Dragon Boat race] on September 8. This will be held on the river Chelmer and local clubs and groups are invited to enter a team for a fun day raising money for charity [see contact details below]. Although the template is established, detailed planning starts in earnest for this year’s ever popular Christmas Market that will be held in Billericay High Street on Sunday December 1st. This will see the return of the ‘Downton Abbey’ carousel along with all the favourites: Free Santas Grotto and Parade, Free Punch & Judy shows sponsored by Billericay District Residents Association (BDRA), Continental Market, over 100 Craft, Farmers, Charity and Trade stalls, Two stages with entertainment, Hot Food and Mulled Wine. Platinum sponsors Essex Autogroup, Burstead Golf Club, Para Bar Moir and Anisha Grange have all confirmed their continued support for this Free Community and Charity fund raising event. Other local companies that wish to be associated with the success of Christmas Market can contact djr66@aol.com to discover how they can promote their business New members are welcome to join us. In addition to charity fund raising there is a social programme of fun events to be enjoyed with like minded friends. We meet in Rose Hall, Chapel Street at 8pm on Thursdays. Google: Mayflower Rotary Billericay or email: rarackham@btopenworld.com
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB After all accounts have been settled, it looks as though the Lions Club made a net profit of approximately £4500. Thanks to all those supporters, sponsors and the Football Club for their help in making this year’s Festival one of the best so far, now the challenge is to improve it next year! We have already taken a group of young children from Belarus to the Adventure Playground at Southend in support of the Children of Chernobyl Charity. This is a charity that supports the children from that area who have been born and grown up in the shadow of the nuclear disaster of 1986. In support of the charity, we take them out once a year to Southend for a day on the rides. Our popular Senior Citizens Concert is to be held on September 14th for the first time at The Emmanuel Church. As usual tickets are free to our Seniors and refreshments will be available during the break. Patrons will be returned to their homes courtesy of The Lions members. A new diary of events is currently being drawn up by the various committees in the club and these will be published on our website soon. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
There were not many “FOUR’s” or “SIX’s” recorded when Billericay Round Table were in bat when we took part in a 5 game, 6-a-side event hosted by Billericay Cricket Club at their ground in Blunts Wall Rd. This was a great ‘club presidents day’ event that the cricket club put on to promote their great game and their all weather facilities along with an opportunity to raise some money for St Lukes Hospice. We have some great events booked in for September. 12th-15th is Round Tables National Sporting Weekend down in Ilfracombe, North Devon. Tonnes of activities and events are planned for Tablers from across the country with the competitiveness planned Billericay has about half a dozen guys taking part this year so we all hope to come away with respectable amount of points to equal our efforts. Then Wednesday 25th we have a joint golf evening taking place. If you are between 18-45 years and fancy a small round of golf why don’t you come along to meet some of the current and old members. Please visit our website for full details on this Golf evening. www.Billericay.Roundtable.co.uk

As its September, back-to-school month, lets consider the 3 R’s. But not the usual Reading, (w)Riting and ‘Rithmetic. Let’s pick 3 R’s for nature lovers, and there are lots of choices. For this month in particular, the transition of summer to autumn, I’d like to propose Robins, Red Admirals and Ripening fruit.Starting with a favourite bird, the robin, because robins get rather vocal at this time of year. After the hush I wrote about last month you should be aware of singing birds in the parks, gardens and woodlands. These songs are nearly always robins. They come in little bursts, sporadic twitters, are slightly melancholy, sometimes tinkly, sometimes whistley, and no two repertoires are the same. Robins sing at this time because they claim their own winter territory for their feeding and survival, and they will keep this territory throughout the winter months although its boundaries may be fluid and they will tolerate each other in very harsh conditions. A robin is a companion around the garden, following you as you disturb insects and worms, perching on lookout posts and fluttering down to the ground to grab a meal.Next R: the red admiral butterfly, surely one of our brightest and best, a black butterfly with striking bright orangeyred bands and white patches on the wings. They are around throughout the summer and numbers swell in June as more migrate in from the continent. They are most numerous now as the new adults emerge. Look for them anywhere, on buddleia, bramble, thistles but especially at this time of year on flowering ivy. In 2006 I counted 24 on the few metres of thick rambling ivy that now supports our garden fence. Ivy is a vigorous plant and does need ripping from the beds but it provides cover and food for so much wildlife so should be encouraged. I hide old plant pots in the creepers of the ivy and these are sometimes used by nesting robins. As autumn progresses, ivy flowers will turn to berries which brings us to the 3rd R, ripening fruit. Autumn’s bounty of berries allows our mammals and birds to gorge themselves and fatten up for winter. One misty morning on Mill Meadows I found an elder bush that was full of blackcaps. The low visibility had probably forced them down from their migration so these grey warblers, with their black or brown skull caps, took the break from flight and the opportunity to feed. We like some of the berries too, blackberries in particular, which some of us enjoy picking them and taking them home to make crumble or jam. Whilst picking, you may spot little piles of purple poo; the droppings of foxes who are also foraging for the same fruit. As the month progresses more fruit ripens, including hawthorn and holly, which add vivid red to our hedgerows. Last year the autumn fruit crop was poor but this year we can expect a good crop of autumn fruit. Good news for our local wildlife, especially the dormice of Norsey Wood and our surrounding hedgerows, which need to fatten up before the winter hibernation.

BASILDON COUNCIL PRAISED ON CANCER SUMMIT
Cancer will affect one in three people in some way during their lifetime. As Chairman of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Cancer, we have campaigned to promote earlier diagnosis. At the end of June, Basildon Hospital and I organised a local cancer summit to address cancer services in the constituency.
The event brought together GPs, consultants and cancer specialists, and its principal purpose was to promote awareness of the importance of earlier diagnosis. This is vitally important, as the earlier a cancer is detected, the more successfully it can be treated. Many cancers can be stopped in
average when it comes to survival rates.
By John Baron MP their tracks by early intervention – a diagnosis is not a death sentence. Unfortunately, late diagnosis is widespread throughout the UK. As many as one quarter of all cancer cases are first diagnosed at A&E – this is far too late. The Government has committed to improve this, and has set a target to save an extra 5,000 cancer lives by 2014/15. Even then, however, this would only bring us up to the European
The summit was addressed by myself and a range of specialist guest speakers including Samir Shah, Clinical Lead for cancer at Basildon Hospital; Sara Hiom of Cancer Research UK; Barbara Gill; and Dr Kishor Padki. There was excellent participation from the audience including many GPs and other health professionals. Basildon Hospital should be praised for organising and hosting the summit, and the local NHS for its strong response. We are now discussing next steps and will update everyone accordingly.

Nick Dryhurst, 27 from Billericay never planned on becoming a carpenter; instead he was all set on becoming a graphic designer from an early age and even completed work experience in the field whilst still at school. “I’ve always been heavily into art and design but after sitting at a desk every day through my work experience I came to realise that it wasn’t for me. I started a job laboring and building park homes and lodges with a family member where I learnt some hand on skills and fell in love with carpentry. My trade is my art.” Nick worked hard and went onto achieve his city and guilds qualification and in 2010 established his own company ‘Billericay Carpentry’. “I didn’t know what direction I was going to take it in but things couldn’t have gone better as I’m starting to explore different avenues and gradually expand. I don’t see the point in doing anything unless you’re going to give it 110%. I work hard and when I play in my spare time, I don’t do things any differently.” Perfectionist, Nick, would ultimately like to run his own big carpentry company and his dream in 10 years time is, ironically, to be sitting at a desk running the show. Is There More To Life Than This? Have you ever wondered what life is all about? Do you have questions about life, faith and why we are here? Perhaps you’ve asked those questions when you’ve experienced times of frustration, even unhappiness, or when you have lost someone you love. It maybe that you’ve done so when faced with the threat of redundancy or the reality of unemployment or, especially, when you are watching the news about some of the shocking events taking place around the world. Perhaps, when you’ve have asked these questions, you’ve also asked: Is there a God? Is there life after death? Why was I born? These are known as the ‘first order questions of life’ because when we find the answers to these (and other similar questions) we begin to find a reason for our existence. And I know, from my own experience, and that of many in our community, that finding faith and purpose in our lives is one of the most significant things we can ever do. Churches Together in Billericay take their role seriously in trying to help members of our community to find the answers to some of the above questions and one of the ways they do this is through The Alpha Course. You may have heard about Alpha from a friend or seen the adverts on buses or at the train station. Alpha is a place to listen, learn, discuss and discover more about the Christian faith. Typically, Alpha involves a meal, a talk and discussion. The talks are interesting and thought provoking (with a multimedia presentation) and address key issues of life from a Christian perspective. After the talk, we discuss the topic of the evening, ask questions, express opinions and learn from each other. The next Alpha Course in Billericay starts on Sunday 6th October 2013 at Saint Mary Magdalen ‘The Church in the High Street’ from 6pm (when we begin with afternoon tea) and finish around 8pm (so you have time to enjoy a drink before you go home). Sunday evening seems to work for many people as it enables you to spend the day with your family rather than having to rush in from work during the week and hurry out again! We’d love to have you with us, especially for the introductory session on 6th October: ‘Is There More To Life Than This?’ If you are interested, or would like to know more, or are looking for direction in the midst of confusion, please get in touch with me below, or contact us on by email: alpha@billericaychurches.org or leave a message with the Church Office on 01277 658055 With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Revd Paul A. Strictly Showbiz Have you ever been sitting on the tube opposite a man covered in glitter and wearing desert boots? If so, it was probably Mark Osborne, 47, from Billericay on his way home from just another average day on set of the biggest show on TV! Having worked as a scenic supervisor at the BBC for over 20 years, Mark is currently flat out in the run up to the 11th series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. “As a scenic supervisor it’s my job to bring the designers vision to life within strict deadlines. I’m in charge of creating the props and set for a show and providing the crew to do so. Each year from August through till December, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ rules my life. I’m in a cab at 4:30am on a Wednesday to be the first at the studio with my crew of 16 and we are the last out at 11pm on a Sunday when the set needs dismantling. “Strictly Come Dancing is really something quite special. The best television has always been the type that brings families together in the living room to watch it and ‘Strictly’ does just that. All the glitter and the glamour (slightly aided by the ‘Strictly’ tanning booth), combined with Bruce, the nicest guy in TV, is a winning combination. It’s not all beer and skittles though, its mental hard work and I’m lucky my family support me through it.” Despite the grueling, demanding workload, ‘Strictly’ is one of Mark’s favourite shows he’s ever worked on and he has worked on a good few; From plastering the old houses on Albert Square in ’85, to splurging an infinite budget on crazy props for Bruce’s Generation Game in ’91 to then accidentally releasing hundreds of packets of crisps on Zoe Ball on Live & Kicking one morning. Marks career has been a long, eclectic one. “’Later …with Jools Holland’ was a fantastic show to work on- I got to see all my favourite bands! Morrissey, Paul Weller, Oasis and my all time favourite, The Who! It is interesting working with people you have preconceptions about. For instance, apart from a man who walks ahead of Morrissey with a torch the whole time, there was nothing odd about him. He seems a top guy. Elton John’s people gave us all sorts of warnings not to touch him etc. before he entered the building and when he arrived he was just your normal, easy going, down to earth guy and very professional. At the other end of the scale, Jim Davidson is without doubt the nastiest man I have ever come across in my career. I don’t have a nice word to say about him”. ‘The Fast Show’, ‘Finding Joseph’ and ‘The Voice’ are just a few more shows Mark has and does work on. But it hasn’t always been celebs and sparkles for him. Mark left Billericay school at 16 to do a chef course. One day back in 1983 his Dad asked him if he actually enjoyed it or whether he’d like to come and sweep up for him at the BBC instead, where he worked as an upholsterer. And the rest is ‘showbiz’ history. Mark, aka ‘Mr. Saturday Night’, has accomplished and created so much throughout his time at the BBC but there is one show he is yet to work on, he has always dreamed of doing ‘The Brits’. “I love my job and I wouldn’t change any element of it for the world. The BBC is an amazing company to work for. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been part of some awful shows but twice as many brilliant ones, especially when Saturday night TV was at it’s prime back in the early 90’s. I really feel that ‘Strictly’ brings a bit of that Saturday night excitement back to TV”. Strictly Fever is already in full swing and the preparation for yet another magical series has kicked off, tying Mark to telly land for almost every hour straight now until December. You can catch the first episode of Strictly Come Dancing on 28th September, live on BB1. By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

THE COACH & HORSES CHAPEL STREET, BILLERICAY, CM12 9LU You only ever hear great things about The Coach and Horses. A good, old fashioned pub, relied on for it’s nostalgic, vintage charm and warming atmosphere, (not to mention it’s famous ostrich burger); a cozy, pocket of the High Street if you will. Set slightly aback from the hustle and bustle, on Chapel Street, The Coach and Horses draws you in with that wonderful smell of home cooked food whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner time. A fond frequenter of it’s sought after ales, I had yet to ever experience its culinary offerings, a crime I had been told. What with a brand new menu set in place, there was no better excuse to go and see what all the fuss is about. A hot Tuesday eve and the pub was comfortably bubbling with friends, regulars and weary workers enjoying a pint or two. The half muted murmurings along with the rich burgundy and dark wood furnishings make you feel instantly at home as you step in to, what by all accounts is, a traditional welcoming English pub. We started the evening with an award winning, golden ale, a pint of ‘Yorkshire Terrier’ to be precise. Seated promptly, we looked on with hungry eyes at the new menu. Bursting with fresh, seasonal offerings and re-imaginings of British standards, we hardly knew where to begin. I have to admit we cheated a smidge and asked our helpful waitress, the lovely Charlotte, to dazzle us with her personal recommendations. Local sourcing is a priority in here with fish straight out of the sea that same morning, via Billingsgate Market, to your plate. Desserts and pies baked to perfection by what you could only imagine to be an in house artisan bakery. My gastronomical tour of the menu began with a plate of meaty, yet tender, Portobello mushrooms, crammed full of goats cheese, sinful, but oh so worth it. And my dining partner, Joe’s with a classic prawn cocktail, laden with an abundance of sweet, juicy prawns, fresh and crisp. We sat beneath a delicate ceiling display, an array of kitsch chinaware, ornately suspended and beautifully authentic giving an air of ‘grandma’s kitchen’. I’m a sucker for pub grub and was delighted that my all time favourite meal was on the menu - it had a lot to live up to! As a steak and kidney pudding connoisseur I am sometimes left disappointed, but not this time. The homemade pudding was a veritable fondant of oozing tender beef, with creamy mashed potatoes and sweet bouncy peas bringing a lighter note to the dish. Joe tucked into a beautiful piece of fresh, moist haddock in a light sauce of parsley, mustard and cheese with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. He was so impressed by this super fish supper that he felt moved to thank the chef personally. By this point we had reached food nirvana and we didn’t want to come back. So enamored were we by the smell of saccharine sweet deserts teasing our taste buds we felt compelled to order. With a peppering of culinary magic our single portion (come on! We couldn’t have possibly managed more!), of another personal favourite, treacle sponge, gilded our table. The unctuous, gooey dessert went down a treat. With its springy sponge soaked in hot, sumptuous treacle along with silky vanilla custard, £3.50 seems a bit ridiculous for such a scrumptious dish. We learnt afterwards that we had just devoured the very last dessert in the building; made fresh every day, these bad boys fly out the door at a rate of knots! Content is a state of being that few people achieve today, slowing down to enjoy a hearty meal with friends or loved ones has become a fast tracked commodity. Stepping into The Coach and Horses has all the familiarity, comfort and character of reconnecting with an old friend. The food is outstanding; uncomplicated, British cuisine rendered in perfect and generous portions. From the welcoming staff and disarming interior to the remarkably reminiscent food I was completely spoilt and I’ll tell you now, I don’t have the slightest inkling of guilt. By Kelly Plume
