Welcome

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a fantastic, yet relaxing festive period and didn’t eat too much! If, like us, you smashed your way through several turkey dinners, lots of booze and Christmas puds, Slimming World (p5) will get you back in to shape in no time. Maybe you received a puppy dog for Christmas (remember dogs aren’t just for Christmas) King of Hounds offer a dog walking service as well as doggy supplies (p9) as does Just Paw Dogs (p11) who offer supplies & grooming services. Out with the old (and we’re not talking about the grandparents) check Basildon Council’s advert (p13) on how to correctly recycle your real Christmas tree this year. Kelly’s Kolumn is back and this time she’s reporting on keeping new years’ resolutions & rubbing shoulders with budding authors. So please read on and we hope you enjoy this months magazine. If you’d like to get in touch with us regarding anything about ‘Around Town’ then please do. Stuart@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or snail mail to: Graphic House, Radford Way, Billericay, Essex, CM12 0DE

From the Around Town Team Speaking of rubbing shoulders, I ran in to Chas Hodges (Chas n Dave) at the beginning of December, when he and his band (minus Dave) played the Ivory Rooms, Billericay. We ‘Rabbit’ted on for hours and he invited me on a trip down to ‘Margate’, but I declined. Apparently ‘there ain’t no pleasing me’! Only Joking -

COMPETITION WINNER! Last months’ competition prize was for a family ticket to see Basildon Towngate Theatres Christmas pantomime ‘Peter Pan’, starring Simon Fielding. We had a plethora of entries, but Peter could only pick one. And the lucky winner is Mr D Ling, from Billericay – CONGRATULATIONS! We hope you enjoy the show.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from all the guys at Billericay Round Table. Thirteen years in to this new millennium.... where and what has happened to us all since the big events of 2000? Over the past year Billericay Round Table have had many of our own great social events amongst our members and have supported events for the Town Council and other local group activities. The first Urban Games at Lake Meadows back in July was a great turnout for the youth members of the community. The Jubilee celebration events in the summer were memorable with the lighting of Billericay’s new beacon. Let’s not forget our own Fireworks event in November when we raised over £40,000 for local causes. Another £1,000 was raised at the Christmas Market which was a fun day to be a part of, as we sold mulled wine and mince pies from our membership tent. This was the first time we had our own stand to promote the Round Table to the community and a good opportunity to seek new members who are always welcome to come along to any of our events or meetings. The Sleigh is also another active and fun part of the calendar for Santa and the kids of Billericay – we cover the Birds estate, Western Road area, Ramsden Heath and Noak Bridge across two weekends. We also challenged ourselves to create a new 2013 calendar which was a great project to be a part of. We still have plenty of calendars left and would welcome you to purchase this for £5 via our website with 100% of the money going to charity. And if you live in Billericay the postage is FREE. If you have a smart phone scan over the SR Code.

So, so many memories…but the only way is forward. Our 2013 events calendar is already filling up and looks certain to be another fantastic year to be a part of. The guys on our Table committee work hard to assist with community events and to raise money for our charity account, which will then be discussed and we will then collectively decide on how monies are disbursed out to the many great causes. We wish you all the very best for 2013 and hope to see you soon.

A Resolution for a Reason I have never stuck to a New Years Resolution. Well I almost have. I gave up smoking…for six months. I followed a healthy eating plan…for a few weeks and went jogging in the morning…once. So this year, instead of vowing never to watch reality TV again, spend half my wages on a pair of shoes or survive on takeaways at the weekend, I’ll make a resolution that’s attainable and worth sticking to! Earlier this month a friend of mine Donna Vanna, 36, joined the rest of her spin class at Studio 360, Billericay in raising money for Help the Heroes. Twenty avid gym buffs conducted a 24 hour spinning class and raised approximately £2,000 for this amazing cause! This got me thinking and has inspired me into doing more for charity and making more of a difference next year. As for the spinning classes, I think I’ll By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume. leave those to Donna. What is your New Years Resolution? Have you ever stuck to one? Get in touch and let me know at... info@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or write to us at: Around Town Magazines, Radford Way, Billericay, Essex CM12 0DE

Firstly, we at Billericay Rugby Football Club (BRFC) would like to wish the people of Billericay a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. As Christmas is a time for giving, we thought that it would be a good time to talk about how the members of BRFC continue to work with the community to support a number of charities. Whilst we all enjoy playing rugby, we feel privileged to represent Billericay, enjoy living in such a great town and like to help give something back where we can. Children in Need – We have supported this well known children’s charity for the last 17 years by donning our rugby kit and collecting money from the station and through the high street on the Friday night of Children in Need. Whilst we are still waiting for confirmation of the amount raised in November 2012, our collections have grown over the years and we broke the £2,000 mark in 2011. In total, we estimate that we have helped the people of Billericay donate over £20,000 to Children in Need since the mid 90’s. The Billericay Round Table – over the past few years we are proud to have forged links with the Billericay Round Table to support them with their fundraising events. This charitable organisation deserves high praise for the tens of thousands that they raise for every year and we are happy to have helped them achieve this by providing marshalls to help deliver their annual Fireworks Display. In return, the Round Table have further invested in the community by providing rugby equipment for our growing youth system which is helping to make the younger generations of Billericay more active. The Orchid Cancer Charity – When Danny Hitchcock (former BRFC front row forward) said that he wanted to lose over 7 stone to jump out of a plane...his rugby mates laughed at him and confidently bet him that he couldn’t do it. They bet him that they would join him for the skydive and raise money for charity if he managed to shift the pounds and sure enough, with the motivation in place, Dan delivered the results! So... Dan was joined by BRFC members Neil Jarvis, Andy Collings and Simon Beadle who collectively raised £3,500 and jumped out of a plane with a backpack for the Orchid Cancer Charity which does amazing work to fight male cancer. The Billericay Rotary Club – Since summer 2011, we have been building a relationship with the Billericay Rotary Club and helping them to bring the community of Billericay together. We have supported their annual Summer Fete with stalls and youth rugby exhibitions which allow us to promote our club whilst giving the people of Billericay a day out and an opportunity to get involved in an active hobby. We have also helped the Rotary Club to deliver their hugely successful Christmas Market by providing marshals to manage the crowds. This event is particularly important as it brings people together and supports Billericay’s local shops and businesses at a critical time. The Sport Relief Mile – This year was the first year that the Sport Relief Mile has been held at Billericay Rugby Club with club members setting out the course, marshalling and organising the day. Runners young and old enjoyed their morning pounding the pavements and/or the Rugby Club field to raise £4,250 for a hugely worthwhile charity that helps disadvantaged people both across the UK and in some of the world’s most poverty stricken countries. So, that is a summary of how BRFC tries to do a bit more than run around a rugby pitch. We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has donated, taken part, helped us and to those whom we have had the privilege of supporting to realise such worthwhile achievements in 2012.

Here’s to an even better 2013! Billericay Rugby Club

New Year Resolutions Which Are Easy To Keep! Whenever a new year arrives, we often reminisce over the previous year, don’t we? We think about the decisions we made and those things we wish we hadn’t done; we think about the present and how we can improve what we have; and we look to the future with expectation and hope and we resolve to live the coming year differently. I wonder what resolutions have you have made for 2013? To lose weight? Cut down on your cholesterol intake? Stop watching too much television? Do more exercise? Catch up with friends? Research suggests that less than 10% of resolutions make it through to the end of January and only 1% through to December. It seems that most of us struggle to keep the promises we make and so I’ve drawn up a list of New Year resolutions which should be easy to keep in 2013:

LIE, CHEAT, DRINK, SWEAR and STEAL.

LIE back and relax just a little more in 2013. Let a little more life happen to you without so much worry.

CHEAT failure. Don’t be afraid to try something new because you think you may fail. It is through failure that we learn the most valuable lessons.

DRINK from the fountain of knowledge. Many people around you have already been down roads you are about to travel. Learn from their experiences and their mistakes. Take what they have learned and use it. SWEAR to do your best - all the time, in every situation. That is all anybody will ever ask.

STEAL a little time for God. Everyday take a little more time to develop your relationship with God through reading the Bible and through prayer (even attending a church!) – this is the most important thing you can do during 2013. And so, be sure to LIE, CHEAT, DRINK, SWEAR and STEAL more than you did last year and you will have a profitable and enjoyable year ahead! With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

The Story of an Author Author, David Hollingsworth, 59 of Billericay doesn’t know why he ever started writing, but fifteen years on and 3 books down, he’s now had his first novel published and it’s proved to be one of the best things he ever did. David has lived in Billericay for almost twenty years, ten of which he has driven for Mayflower Cabs. Growing up in Stepney, East London, he explains he was ‘too stupid’ to have an interest in writing when he was at school “I was the one at the back of the class swinging on my chair. When I was 15, a friend asked me if I liked to read and to seem intelligent I said yes. He handed me the book ‘The Godfather’ and told me to read it. It was the first book I ever read and to this day it’s still my favourite” ‘The Party’, Hollingsworth’s latest novel and his first to be published, centres on an up and coming criminal and his old school gangster Father. “The idea for the story came about while I was at a friend’s 60th Birthday party. I grabbed a pen and jotted it down on a couple of beer mats”. Drawing upon his experience of living in London, associating with the hard circles and knowing the names and faces, David writes gritty crime fiction books all based in the East End. “The stories I write come off the top of my head but I’ve always been a fan of the old black and white gangster films”. Having previously worked as a commercial artist it is clear to see that David has always been blessed with imagination and creativity. After turning his hand to writing, he started attending Billericay Writers’ Group, which convenes once a fortnight at The Fold. “I’ve been going for over six years now and Ivy (group leader) has always said she has faith in me because I tell a good story”. Working as a cabby, there is often time in between jobs to read and write and David wrote most of the ‘Party’ whilst out and about on the job. “I much prefer writing pen to paper and then going over and over it to perfect it. I always have a notebook handy so wherever I am I can scribble down my ideas.” With son, Joe, the main publicist for his Dad’s work, his novels are more of a family effort. David lives at home with his wife Jacquelyn who lends a helping hand now and then. “Crime fiction doesn’t interest my wife at all but she is a huge support and often reads through my work. If ever I’m stuck with a spelling I call to her down stairs”. As well as being an avid Arsenal supporter, David has a passion for reading. Historical novelist Bernard Cornwell, crime writer Michael Connelly and Ken Follett are among his favourite authors. Dull is the furthest word that could ever spring to mind after talking with David but he modestly explains “I don’t have many interests, I’m pretty boring really! My aim is to be able to give up driving the taxi so I can concentrate more on my writing. I have so many ideas and can’t wait to get them down”. ‘The Party’ is available in both an eBook and paperback format. It has been released on all major eReader’s such as Kindle, Kobo’s and iBook’s and can be purchased from Amazon.com or the website www.thepartybyjdcarter.com.
