We are not architects who do healthcare. We are healthcare architects

What does this mean?

It means we chose this profession so we can do more than just design buildings. We chose it to design solutions that can change people’s lives significantly. Because when a transplant patient receives a new heart, or a mental health patient reaches a breakthrough, or a physician develops a medical procedure that improves the lives of thousands, it happens inside a space designed by a healthcare architect. This is why we arrive every morning with our sleeves rolled up and ready to work.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Reach consensus around strategy to supercharge your plan for the future. We work with health systems to develop strategies that drive sustainable business models across the continuum of care.

MASTER PLANNING

We have learned that while master planning engagements can transform an organization, the outputs of the traditional process are inherently broken. Master planning teams either omit the necessary perspectives, or these roles are siloed or filled by external consultants, creating delays and limiting rapid re-assessments. As Lean planners, we improve the value of master planning by redesigning the process. Array not only facilitates discussions between key stakeholders representing different perspectives, but our team brings its own functional expertise. The team’s broad experience builds credibility with stakeholders across the organization and advances data-driven discussions of needs and priorities.

PRE-DESIGN PLANNING & OPTIMIZATION

Lean is an operational strategy that can be used to achieve specific goals defined by your organization. Our experience extends from strategic decision making, where we help you define organizational goals, to tactical workflow analysis, where we assist in developing countermeasures appropriate to your specific situation. We use this as a foundation to develop a more robust program alongside your leaders setting your project up for success as design begins.

INTERVENTIONAL & SURGERY

Designing modern interventional spaces requires a deep understanding of the planning intricacies associated with imaging, surgery, cardiology, and other associated specialties. These environments must carefully balance staff efficiency, patient comfort, and the integration of cuttingedge technologies.

Backed by technical expertise and evidence-based analysis, our collaborative approach results in high-performing interventional platforms, surgical suites, and critical care hubs. These dynamic environments are designed to enhance patient outcomes, with the flexibility required to address evolving medical practices and technological advancements.

INSPIRA HEALTH Greenfield Hospital Interventional Platform

Mullica Hill, NJ

Inspira’s new greenfield replacement hospital in Mullica Hill, NJ, designed by Array, is a 460,000 SF center for experiential and operational excellence, fostering quality, safe, and bestpractice patient care.

The second floor interventional platform, designed in support of both inpatient and outpatient care, includes operating rooms, interventional/catheterization labs, and endoscopy/procedure rooms that are discreetly zoned yet planned with shared staff, prep, PACU, and recovery suites. Employing rapid-testing methods, including physical mock-ups and persona mapping, a universal patient-centric, private pre-op and recovery room was designed to meet the needs of varied patient types and facilitate the use and throughput of the surgical spaces. Nursing sub-stations provide secondary

documentation outside of the rooms in addition to bedside computers.

A spacious second floor waiting area is open to the main lobby below and connected by a large staircase as well as publicly-accessible elevators. Inpatient circulation occurs off-stage with a dedicated patient elevator bank and an additional elevator directly connecting the first floor emergency department, second floor interventional platform, third floor intensive care unit, and fourth/fifth floor nursing units.

In addition, the sterile processing department was designed for immediate access from semirestricted and non-restricted areas in order to minimize steps and cross-traffic of soiled and clean instruments, as well as facilitate optimized throughput.

COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE

Neuro Interventional Radiology Suite

Camden, NJ

Cooper University Health Care, a leading academic medical system, operates one of the busiest Level-1 trauma centers in the region at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Array was engaged to design a new acute stroke and neuro interventional suite within the hospital’s emergency department. A first of its kind in the US, the suite incorporates stateof-the-art technology, medical equipment, and infrastructure to reduce time-to-table for critical stroke patients.

In order to decant the space needed for this suite, Array helped Cooper relocate the X-Ray modality that was displaced. Anchoring the suite is a biplane angiography system combined with a CT on rails that slides between the neuro IR suite and CT room on demand to seamlessly integrate angio, CT, and

ultrasound images. This unique configuration enables providers to proactively treat patients post-intake and employ dynamic imaging during surgical procedures. The IR suite and CT room are separated by a lead-lined, telescopic door that can be opened as needed, with two control rooms allowing operation of the CT from either space. Across the corridor, a new waiting area with two prep/recovery beds was created to increase patient capacity for these services.

The project was completed within an active ED and required careful phasing, solutions for flow challenges, the integration of complex technology and infrastructure, and creative solutions to overcome physical constraints such as existing MEP infrastructure and ceiling height.

COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE

Moorestown Ambulatory Care Facility

Moorestown, NJ

Cooper University Health Care’s transformation of a retail structure at the Moorestown Mall into its largest outpatient facility is more than just adaptive reuse—it’s a revolution in accessible community care. By repurposing this space, Cooper brings cutting-edge medical services closer to the Moorestown, New Jersey community, eliminating the need for lengthy trips to the main hospital while expanding their presence in a new market.

The three-story, 166,000 SF facility is designed to integrate seamlessly into the bustling commercial area while also standing out as a beacon of health and vitality. Through bold architectural choices like “Cooper Red” perforated metal screens and large expanses of glass, the building revitalizes the area and becomes a focal point for both healthcare and community engagement.

Taking advantage of the expansive floor plates and high floor-to-floor heights, the first level is anchored by a large central spine linking the entrance and registration area to the mall’s main circulation axis. This “medical mall” concept includes a self-service café marketplace, connected care technology hub, visitor support services, and other amenities, adding convenience for patients and integrating Cooper Moorestown into the overall mall experience. The overall interior aesthetic emphasizes warmth and tranquility, using warm wood tones and textural finishes to create a home-like environment. Technology and artistry are thoughtfully integrated, with immersive screens displaying calming natural scenes to help reduce the stress of medical visits.

COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE

Cooper University Hospital Surgery Expansion

Camden, NJ

To meet increased patient demand and improve the efficiency of their existing seven OR surgical floor, Cooper embarked on a surgical platform expansion and renovation to include five new operating rooms. Building on their renowned orthopedic practice, the expansion included an additional orthopedic OR, a reconfiguration of another orthopedic OR and the addition of a trauma OR and two robotic ORs to support specialized oncologic procedures.

The design team studied operational workflow both in the operating rooms and throughout the surgery department. As the highest-functioning service line, it was important to understand all operational and experiential factors. The design team observed both patients and staff through

multiple processes to map workflow in and around the orthopedic operating rooms to establish a baseline for operations and identify opportunities for improvement.

Through detailed value stream, process and experience mapping, Array developed a transformation plan which identified potential improvements to the overall performance of the department while also achieving operating rooms that were optimally sized and organized to suit the needs of the various procedures. Wherever possible, operating rooms were scaled and configured to be flexible, accommodating a variety of complex orthopedic procedures and anticipated market share capture.

RWJBARNABAS HEALTH South Surgical Overbuild Expansion

New Brunswick, NJ

RWJBarnabas Health wanted to improve and update surgical services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick to meet increased patient volume and the demand for advanced, technologically-complex surgical procedures. We partnered with RWJBH to complete the first phase of this project, the fit out of an 85,000 square foot overbuild expansion.

Phase I included five operating rooms, one of which is a hybrid OR that allows for flexibility across a range of specialties. These ORs feature state-of-the-art technology such as bi-plane imaging and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) and allow

for both open and laparoscopic surgeries.

New reception, waiting rooms, administrative stations, and storage/support spaces were designed to match the high level of finish throughout the expansion.

Additionally, the increased sterilization and decontamination requirements was addressed by creating new central sterile processing unit (CSP). The CSP includes a custom automation system designed to enhance infection prevention and patient safety. Automation and advanced technology within the CSP optimizes machine and staff productivity, with an emphasis on quality control and reliability.

RWJBARNABAS HEALTH Surgery & Cardiac ICU Vertical Expansion

New Brunswick, NJ

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick, the flagship hospital for the RWJBarnabas Health system, faced challenges in ICU capacity, patient flow, and parking logistics at the Core Pavilion and South Building. Array collaborated with RWJBH to design an overbuild expansion that comprehensively addressed these issues. The project’s phased approach ensured continuous ICU operation, improved the building’s structural system, and maintained circulation during construction.

The 21,500 SF vertical overbuild created a single-floor cardiac ICU unit for the Core Pavilion, featuring 23 private rooms and one isolation room. Equipped with state-of-theart medical booms for enhanced patient access, these rooms prioritize modern conveniences for both patients and staff. The project also included replacement of

four existing elevators and installation of a new ICU-dedicated elevator, improving connection between the emergency department, operating rooms, and ICU.

For the South Building, a new permanent rehabilitation transport parking lot was introduced to alleviate overcrowding in the existing emergency vehicle parking lot. This lot created a central entry point with direct access to various clinical areas and also provided flexible “swing space” for vehicles affected by other campus construction projects.

The expanded facility now boasts ample ICU capacity, better departmental connectivity and patient transport, and improved infrastructure, resulting in an enhanced patient experience and more efficient care at the New Brunswick campus.

RWJBARNABAS HEALTH

Somerset Same-Day Surgery

Somerville, NJ

The second phase of the RWJBarnabas Health Somerset Master Plan renovation was the consolidation and relocation of same-day surgery services. This new unit provides a closer adjacency to the operating suite and PACU for better procedural flow, with 14 private intake bays and 10 recovery bays that were carefully designed to provide greater patient privacy while maintaining an open, light-filled environment.

Lighting design plays a pivotal role in unifying the space. Rhythmic linear lights guide

patients from the family waiting area with its focal skylights to the pre-operative suite with its unique lit soffit, and continues through the recovery suite for a more gentle lighting effect. The neutral finish throughout brings focus to clinical touch points by adding warmer wood tones at the clinical work areas.

RWJBARNABAS HEALTH

Neurocritical Care Unit

New Brunswick, NJ

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, in partnership with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, offers innovative neuroscience therapies found at only a select group of leading national institutions. These services are centralized within the hospital’s neurocritical care unit, which features advanced technology designed specifically for the treatment of critically-ill neurology and neurosurgery patients.

Fitted into a 16,000 SF former office and lab space within the campus’ Acute Building, we worked with RWJBarnabas Health to balance the innate program complexity with a focus on a stress-free visitor experience. The unit, which includes 15 patient beds along the perimeter of the floor, is characterized by unconventional shape that removes distinct physical boundaries between the care team

and public circulation. This increased visibility results in improved staff efficiency and reduced response times.

Patient rooms contain built-in storage and a dedicated space for visiting family, allowing them to feel integrated into the care process.

Each room is also equipped with Moberg CNS neuromonitoring technology, a multimodality monitoring system that aids in prevention and early detection but can support immediate intervention when required.

To protect the privacy of patients, visitors, and staff in such an open unit, design features such as electrochromatic glass and custom decorative film were integrated throughout to create an adaptable care environment. Family and visitors can also find respite in a dedicated quiet waiting area, shaped so users feel cocooned and comforted during their stay.

MONTEFIORE HEALTH SYSTEM

Hutchinson Campus Ambulatory Surgery Center

Bronx, NY

Array provided planning and design services for the complete fitout of this 12-story surgery center and medical office building at Montefiore Health System’s Hutchinson Campus. Ambulatory surgery and support services are distributed across three floors including waiting, prep/recovery, physician lockers and sterile processing. Great care was taken to properly connect the ORs and services that were located across several floors to ensure maximum efficiency and patient safety. The facility includes a full imaging suite with two MRIs, two CTs, four Radiology rooms, mammography and ultrasound.

The seven upper clinical floors are based on modules and pods so space can easily be increased or decreased between groups as volumes dictate. Rooms can easily swing

from office to consult to exam rooms due to standardized configurations and provided infrastructure. Multiple points of entry were also carefully monitored due to patients who self-park, those who take mass transit and those dropped off. With these conditions came additional requirements for security and emergency preparedness.

The design centers on the patient experience by incorporating artful details, an abundance of natural light and clear wayfinding for seamless transitions for patients, staff and materials. The lobby is inviting with an 80-foot mural depicting natural landscapes lining the curved walls and is accompanied by an open information desk and ample seating for patients and visitors.

ATLANTICARE

Ambulatory Surgical Center

Egg Harbor Twp., NJ

In partnership with Rothman Orthopedics, AtlantiCare’s new ambulatory surgical center in Egg Harbor Township is a holistic experience designed with consumer focus and operational efficiency as main priorities. The facility includes six state-of-the-art operating rooms, accompanied by twelve pre-op bays, twelve post-op bays, and three private overnight rooms, in addition to ancillary clinical support.

The public areas are designed to offer visitors a high-end hospitality environment with flexible seating and gathering areas, promoting

comfort and privacy while waiting. This approach was carried throughout the clinical areas as well, where patient care bays and nurses’ stations utilize sophisticated design and materials, creating a less clinical consumer experience that is also very functional for staff. In addition to providing visioning, branding and design services, the team also developed plan revisions for operational efficiency, coordinated equipment, and developed signage concepts, resulting in a comprehensive environment for the health system.

MOUNT SINAI HEALTH SYSTEM

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units

New York, NY

Array and Mount Sinai Health System have collaborated on several projects within the adjacent Klingenstein and Guggenheim buildings over the last several years. This work included:

• A full gut renovation of the Guggenheim Pavilion’s fifth floor central unit, including an updated coronary care unit (CCU) with 12 private rooms.

• The expansion and modernization of expansion of Klingenstein Clinical Center’s (KCC) Cardiac ICU on their sixth floor.

Guggenheim Central CCU

Full view sliding and breakaway doors allow ease of clinical access as well as direct patient observation from outside the room. An elongated team center provides seated observation spaces for clinicians to chart and maintain visual contact while maintaining patient privacy. Same-handed room design allows clinicians to inherently know where all supplies will be so they can focus their attention of the patient’s needs. An office and fellows room provides additional space for staff to work with colleagues. An enlarged and upgraded IT room accommodates the latest communication and low voltage equipment requirements.

KCC Cardiac Care Unit

The Klingenstein Clinical Center’s sixth floor, which serves patients with a variety of complex cardiac needs, was fully renovated to include 10 bed cardiac critical care unit and adjacent 10 bed step-down unit. Windows were replaced to provide greater energy efficiency. New interior construction included all interior partitions, smoke separations, doors, ceilings and finishes

To comply with current healthcare guidelines, the team conducted a thorough survey and full-scale mockups to understand the existing conditions, and to validate the idealized patient room layout that worked within the building’s structural grid. With the patient rooms solidly defined, the team developed the clinical support cores for each unit with the same rigorous understanding of the building’s available space. The final design integrated the aesthetic solution with the functional design, resulting in a calming and restful environment.

NEMOURS CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Outpatient & Surgery Center

Deptford, NJ

When a national children’s hospital decided to move into a new market, they needed to move quickly. As with all ambulatory projects in today’s competitive environment, being first to market with the right product at the right cost is critical. But it’s tough to move quickly when you are building a project unlike any other in your system.

Array Architects and Nemours Children’s Health used a process-led design approach to rapidly define and design a new, fully integrated multispecialty outpatient center that features flexible provider clinics, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, wellness and ambulatory surgery. Our approach, using Lean as a foundation, allowed Nemours to work through complex questions about integration, resource

deployment and business/revenue implications while studying physical configurations and cost structures to support them. All of this was achieved without sacrificing commitment to capital budget objectives as well as schedule.

Process-led design employs a rigorous and engaging approach to quickly define goals and obstacles. Process-before-design encourages the integrated team to focus on experience, quality, outcomes and workflow before specific spatial configurations begin to limit innovation. Process mapping, visual programming, virtual and physical mock ups as well as rapid prototyping were used in parallel during the early design phases to ensure the optimal solution.

NEMOURS CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Nemours Children’s Hospital Hybrid Cath Lab

Wilmington, DE

Ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery by U.S. News & World Report, families from across the country—and around the world—come to the cardiac center at Nemours Children’s Hospital. To meet this demand, this pediatric specialty hospital needed to expand its cardiac intensive care unit and wanted to build a new hybrid operating suite, but expansion space was extremely limited.

The new suite includes a hybrid bi-plane catheterization lab and associated support space. The lab was located in shell space

planned by Array during a previous NICU/ CICU expansion project for Nemours and can also serve as prep/recovery space for cardiac patients. Having this space available allowed for Nemours’ existing cath lab to remain in operation while the new hybrid lab was constructed. The new suite is configured so that a second cath lab can be created with minimal operational impact during construction.
