CALGARY CIVIC DISTRICT Calgary 2014
235
Calgary’s Civic District is at an important crossroads located in the east section of downtown. Throughout the Civic District, a number of organizations are undergoing or planning for expansions and new developments, including Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, Bow Valley College, EPCOR Centre for Performing Arts, National Music Centre, TELUS Convention Centre and the new Central Library. The City of Calgary has been undertaking significant capital improvements and upgrades in the District in areas aimed to define Calgary’s identity as a city. With such change comes the responsibility to steward this evolution in a manner that ensures that the present and future needs of the city are met in a holistic way. The Civic District comprises a concentrated locus of cultural infrastructure and amenities. The development of the East Village in general promises to cement this reputation. Additionally, the planned redevelopment of the Municipal Building and Olympic Plaza will greatly transform the character of the District.

MACHELEN AND DIEGEM Bruxelles 2010

Master/visual-quality plan and Regional Implemenation Plan (RUPs) The master plan is the translation of a spatial planning vision. The vision, often portrayed through spatial concepts, leads to the capturing of a number of key design choices, the spatial ‘rules’. These ‘rules’ will be further elaborated and refined in function of a real spatial image. The master plan covers both the urban design process and the outcome. As a result the master plan/urban design gives the city an appealing image for a proposed development. The design makes the underlying views and orientations explicit. It is not a blueprint for a determinate end-state, but a preferential and plausible effect based on unsubstantiated goals/purposes and assumptions. Division of the masterplan in modules: -General frame -Landscape structure -Settlement structure -Multimodal network -Urban functions and amenities -Public spaces Machelen -Public spaces Diegem -Sustainability

TRINITAT NOVA Barcelona 2000

2nd prize for the competition: ‘Ideas for the order of the district Trinitat Nova’. The layout proposal of the neighbourhood of Trinitat Nova, which won the second prize, can be seen as a redesign of the road structure with the goal of adapting a new street pattern to the existing topography. Therefore, the streets should have a minimal slope. The goal is to achieve gradients of about 3% which allow to fluid fitting between housing and territory. From the existing streets on the site, those which follow the contours of the topography, are preserved, such as Vila-Real, Aiguablava, Palamós and S´Agaró. On the other hand, streets like Carrer de la Llosa, which are transversal to the contours, will be substituted for the new streets ´A´,´B´, ´C´ and ´D´. All of them together complete the zigzag form which structures the overall layout of the area between S´Agaró and Vila-Real. The street Aiguablava is now the axis of the access that links Torre Baró with Vallbona. Along its line most of the retail of the new neighborhood is disposed. The proposed building type, a linear block with slight depth (12,80m) has the goal of adapting to the new contours of the topography. The buildings have a height of ground floor + five stories. These are placed on top of an underground parking space. The ground floor, dedicated to retail, is close to the main circulation roads, whereas housing is placed in the more interior and protected locations.

BUGA 2001 Potsdam 1997

Finalist invited international competition The Project organizes the new district of Potsdam, the “Rote Kaserne” quarter and the central park, which connect new residential areas from one another. It suggests contemporary urban planning by using a fractal geometry. This allows construction of a dynamic, multi-perspective landscape in harmonious relation with the topography, formed by a sequence of distinctive open space fragments. The structural scheme for the proposal is divided into three linear layers and is intended to allow a fluid connection between the districts, the park and the surroundings through three main mechanisms: 1. Connecting lines. These are streets and pathways in the east-west direction which relate the “Garden City” to the districts “Rote Kaserne” and “Am Schragen”. At the park, pathways and small channels cross the green areas, the ends of which are ornamentally formed and functionally dedicated to activities. 2. Lines of use. These lines go across the site parallel to the connecting lines. Depending on its location, it will adapted to the habitants´ use, either as a park or as a garden. 3. Field of axis. These are the main structural axis. They relate the project area of Bornstedterfeld and Potsdam to its surroundings.

FAÇANA DE LA GRAN VIA SUD L’Hospitalet de Llobregat 1991 021
The Granvia is one of the main avenues in Barcelona and the prior road to access the airport. At this part, it was considered an urban motorway. This project proposes a new urban façade, which will convert this area to the most representative city axis of Hospitalet. The size of the studied site is of 2.5 km by 130 m. At the south side, a lateral way is proposed which allows the frontal access to the parcels and confirms the presence of the new building façades. The proposed section for Granvia will be asymmetric. At the north part, a ramp will connect to distinctive residential neighborhood. At the south part, a green area ornamentally planted underlined the urban tertiary industrial zone, which has just been created. As for boundary of the special plan, the resulted volume try is conditioned by the length and width of the parcels. The project organizes formerly the built surrounding concentrating it at the first street adjacent to the Granvia. A squares system organizes the building entrances and weakens the strong impact of car traffic. It will be a series of similar towers of 25m height and the distance between them being the same as their Granvia façade size. The urban image of this sector is determinated by the experimentation in movement of this volumetric repetition.
