The latest expansion at the Phoenix Zoo has been two years in the making. This month, the 6-acre Predator Passage expansion along the zoo’s Africa Trail welcomes visitors to “step into the heart of Africa” and to encounter Africa’s most fascinating and awe-inspiring predators. View African lions from a 20-foot-tall tower and wander trails between habitats of the Amur leopard, fennec foxes, meerkats, red river hogs, spotted hyenas, and Rüppell’s griffon vultures. Here, learn about these magnificent creatures and the vital role they play in the ecosystems they call home. The Phoenix Zoo is operated by the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, which advances the stewardship and conservation of animals and their habitats while providing experiences that inspire people and motivate them to care for the natural world. It is the only zoo in the Valley accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a nonprofit zoological park. More than 3,000 animals call the zoo home, many of which are endangered and threatened species. 455 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix; www.phoenixzoo.org

THRILLING THROWBACK
Those who have visited the Valley before may have heard of Clubhouse at Maya’s popular summer pool parties and events. Now, the 17,000-squarefoot outdoor entertainment pavilion has received a makeover for the 20232024 season—and it’s a throwback with a Y2K-inspired look. Gone (well, covered over
for now) is the pool and in its place is expansive green turf. Cabanas have been transformed into bar spaces. Y2K-themed art installations abound, as do giant-sized yard games, corn hole, and cozy furniture. Three 14-foot-tall and 8-foot-wide LED screens are perfect for sports-viewing, and drinks and comfort food
concessions make it easy to relax and settle in. Adding to the party atmosphere, celebrity DJs spin tunes on select Fridays and Saturdays. Open only Mon., Thurs., and Fri. from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sat. and Sun. from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. 7333 E. Indian Plaza, Scottsdale; www. mayaclubaz.com

CULINARY DROPOUT AT THE YARD The brainchild of Arizona culinary visionary Sam Fox, Culinary Dropout is a fast-growing brand born locally in Arizona. Now with locations across Tempe, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Gilbert, and Tucson, the “at The Yard” part of the concept is what sets this eatery apart as it refers to an extra-large covered patio outside of the traditional venue seating that is blanketed with corn hole, pingpong, and foosball. Depending on the location, there might also be space for live music, wild photo-ready murals, community-driven art installations (in Gilbert they collected musical instruments from the local community), and semi-regular events like yoga. THE DUCE
Recently opened at Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale, this 65,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor entertainment complex features a casual, chef-driven restaurant, a sports bar, and a variety of yard games. And then there is the pickleball. Pickleball, a sport that now has a market of 36.5 million players according to the 2023 APP Pickleball Participation Report, is the heartbeat of the complex. With pickleball and food as the primary focal points, the entertainment venue provides a family-friendly atmosphere that all ages can enjoy. 9330 W. Hanna Lane, Glendale; www.chickennpickle.com
The Duce is wild. Within its 14,000 square feet in Downtown Phoenix, this truly unique entertainment epicenter boasts three separate stages and multiple bars, as well as a boxing ring, copious outdoor games, and a nostalgic 1965 Airstream trailer that doubles as kitchen space. Oh, but that is far from all. It also boasts a dance floor, massive patio, retro television playing classic films and Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (which it was featured on in 2013), and even citrus trees under a refurbished skylight. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. 525 S. Central Ave., Phoenix; www.theducephx.com
CLUBHOUSE AT MAYA
THE LITTLE WOODY
Clubhouse at Maya is a 17,000-square-foot outdoor entertainment pavilion complete with Instagram-worthy backdrops and interactive elements in every direction, located in the heart of the Entertainment District in Old Town Scottsdale. This year's new layout is designed to make guests feel like they are in an adult playground with Y2K-themed art installations that are bold in color and size, and designed with selfies—and the early 2000s—in mind. Beyond that, thanks in great part to its three new 14-foot-tall, 8-foot-wide LED screens, Clubhouse is also a dream destination for football watch parties and, for the first time ever, Clubhouse hosts celebrity DJs on select Fridays and Saturdays. There are also giant-sized Jenga games on picnic tables throughout the venue, several corn hole games, as well as Pop-aShot, giant beer pong, giant Connect Four, The Claw Toy Grab, and
Skee-Ball—it’s not just for children’s birthday parties at Peter Piper Pizza anymore! The classic game gets its adult due at The Little Woody, a hidden gem in Arcadia that also features board games, arcade games, Golden Tee golf, darts, and a slew of billiard tables. The vibe is a mix of dive-bar combined with a sexy appeal that has made this a Valley mainstay for more than a decade. 4228 E. Indian School Road; www.littlewoodyaz.com

NIGHT OWL Night Owl is a full-on sensory experience well beyond just a bar or restaurant concept. PUTTSHACK Remember good, old-fashioned mini-golf courses from the 1980s and 1990s, complete with windmill obstacles and manmade waterfalls? Well, Puttshack is not that kind of mini-golf course. Instead, Puttshack is a 25,000-square-foot, two-story bar, restaurant, and entertainment destination unlike anything else in the Valley. It features four competitive courses, each with nine holes to play. The courses are all integrated with Puttshack’s patented Trackaball™ technology, which powers the entire gameplay experience and provides seamless automated scoring, bonus point opportunities, and interactive games at each hole. culture art exhibit with skateboard- and owl-themed art in every direction, as well as a smattering of retro posters showcasing iconic local live shows from Arizona’s past and visual tributes to the likes of everyone from The Beatles to Looney Tunes. Night Owl also has a small stage for live acts and DJs, a 2,700-squarefoot patio that is similarly eccentric, and a psychedelic funhouse mirror that leads the way to the restrooms. Above the bar, made from vintage pinball machines no less, are several flat-screen televisions most often playing live sports. In addition to the more standard tables, chairs, and couches at Night Owl, there are wine and whiskey barrels strewn throughout the space that serve as additional spots to set down a cocktail or plunk down a pizza, the venue’s signature culinary offering. www.nightowlaz.com

Guest DJs are invited often, and when not performing, music is pumping throughout Puttshack, helping keep up a nightclub-like vibe. In fact, dancing along the course is encouraged. SNAKES AND LATTES At Snakes and Lattes, all guests are board, but never bored. That is because this Tempe outpost has more than 1,000 board games. There are also Canadian staples such as poutine, as well as bruschetta boards, elevated gastropub fare, and an expansive brunch menu served right along with Monopoly, Candy Land, and Clue, plus card
games, classic and new party games, and strategy games. 20 W. 6th St., Tempe; www.snakesandlattes.com/tempe
TOPGOLF In 2014, golf entertainment leader TopGolf debuted its first Arizona location in Scottsdale. In the years since, the brand has grown to also include locations in Gilbert and Glendale. TopGolf offers competitive golfing games for all ages and skill levels, and advanced technology to track every player’s shots. Those who just want to relax can enjoy the upscale, laidback ambiance that boasts high-definition flat-screen TVs and an extensive food and beverage menu, not to mention popular bar games ranging from foosball to darts. Perched atop a hill in Phoenix is Wrigley Mansion, built in 1932 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. as a 50th anniversary gift to his wife. The views from the home are stunning, as is its architecture. The home changed hands several times, first sold by the Wrigley family in 1973. In 1992, it was purchased by the now-late Geordie Hormel and his wife, Jamie. Today, the restored mansion, which still features many original items, is a premier fine-dining and special event venue. Tours of the storied landmark are offered daily and showcase the destination’s colorful history— and even some of the much-discussed ghost stories. 2501 E. While Four Peaks Brewing Co. has three Valley locations, its original 8th Street destination in Tempe is where the brewing happens. And every Saturday, a Four Peaks guide offers a look at the location, which is housed inside a 100-year-old former creamery, ice factory, and recording studio. The tour offers insight on the popular brewery’s operations, history, and brewing process. Bonus? You may get the chance to sample some specialties. 1340 E. 8th St., Tempe; www.fourpeaks.com

Over the years, such names as Mae West, Henry Fonda, and Lauren Becall played here. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, the building then underwent a restoration.
