Alison Bailin Batz

“I was born Elyse Marie Bailin on September 26, 1980. Except that is not my name. By September 29, 1980, my parents agreed I was an ‘Alison,’ and updated my birth certificate before leaving the hospital. As a result, I have always been fascinated by names, so writing What’s in a Name just tickled me. And as a longtime wine writer, I was absolutely honored to help shine a light on Southern Arizona vino this year with Grape to Glass,” writer Bailin says.

Christina Barrueta

“I love sharing Arizona’s rich history and it was especially interesting to learn that in its heyday, Tombstone wasn’t just a Wild West town—it had theaters, a bowling alley, and even an opera house,” says Barrueta, an Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame writer. Barrueta, also the author of Arizona Wine: A History of Perseverance and Passion and Phoenix Cooks, is working on her third book, Phoenix Eats & Drinks, coming out in 2025.

Michelle Glicksman

“I loved getting to know the amazing people we featured in the Q&As. Two incredible chefs and a musician? They’ve made such an impact in Arizona! And learning about the spa that offers the world’s most authentic Native American spa services was fascinating,” says Glicksman, a community, food, wine, and travel writer and editor.

Susan Lanier-Graham

“The Sunset Crater-Wupatki Loop Road was a huge wow moment for me,” says Lanier-Graham, a food, wine, and travel writer who travels the U.S. in her RV searching for wow moments to write about. “The rugged beauty encapsulates the best of Arizona and illustrates the contrasts that make this state so captivating. I’ve taken this loop several times, always discovering something new and leaving with a renewed sense of awe.”

Rebecca L. Rhoades

“I was surprised to learn that Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest aerospace museums in the world. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors travel from across the globe to explore its amazing collections,” says Rhoades, an award-winning travel writer. “Now, with the opening of Pima’s partner museum, the Tucson Military Vehicle Museum, Southern Arizona is poised to become a must-do destination for veterans, military aficionados, and fans of automotive machinery of all ages.”

Georgann Yara

“I’m a dessert-first gal so it was a thrill to write about the family behind the iconic Cerreta Candy Company. Finding out that founder Jim Cerrea Sr. crafted recipes for his shop that would be replicated by international candy corporations was a sweet fun fact,” says Yara, a freelance journalist. “And the epic factory marshmallow fights that he often started proves you’re never too old to be a kid in a candy shop.”

A TALE OF THREE REGIONS

Valley of the Sun

The largest metropolitan area in the Southwestern United States, Greater Phoenix encompasses more than 20 cities and towns, including Scottsdale, Phoenix (which is the capital of the state), Cave Creek, Carefree, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale. Its nickname is the Valley of the Sun, bestowed in recognition of the average of 300 days of sunshine the Valley—so called because the area lies in the Salt River Valley—enjoys each year. Metro Phoenix is known for its high-end spas, golf courses, restaurants, and of course, cacti and scenic views.

Northern Arizona

Northern Arizona includes cities such as Sedona, Flagstaff, Payson, Pinetop, and Williams. The area features the famous red rocks of Sedona, several mountain ranges—including the San Francisco Peaks—and the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. Of course, it’s also the location of the famous Grand Canyon, as well as Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, the Painted Desert, Slide Rock State Park, Antelope Canyon, and Meteor Crater. Due to its elevation, Northern Arizona experiences more seasonal weather than the Valley of the Sun, often including heavy snow. Skiing is a popular pastime.

Southern Arizona

There’s a lot of history to explore in Southern Arizona, from ancient ruins to abandoned mines to locales made famous during the Wild West days. Tucson is the region’s largest city, and is today filled with golf courses, spas, and a thriving food scene. Tombstone and Bisbee are known for their Old West vibes, while Sonoita, Elgin, and Willcox are popular locations for wineries and distilleries. The area is also home to Tubac, Yuma, and Sierra Vista. Southern Arizona, which borders Mexico, tends to have a warm, dry climate.

Cosanti

In 1956, architect Paolo Soleri (1919-2013) left his hometown of Turin, Italy, to settle in Arizona, study briefly with architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and find a place to build his “city of the future.” He later divided his time between Cosanti, his primary residence and studio near Scottsdale, and Arcosanti, his mixed-use communal experiment 60 miles north. Cosanti is a digest of Arcosanti, exhibiting Soleri’s anti-urban-sprawl ideas, earthy architectural elements, and artistic windbells. 6433 E. WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The stories behind some of the most iconic Valley eateries

Ever wonder how a particular restaurant got its name? Turns out several of the Valley’s iconic spots have meaningful stories behind their monikers.

MOWRY & COTTON AT THE PHOENICIAN

Legend has it that George Mowry and James Cotton made their way to the Valley in 1872 with a then-wild idea: to open a proper bar rather than yet another saloon. And while historians argue the finer details of the exact story, The Phoenician celebrates the region’s first foray into the finer things at Mowry & Cotton, which uses a hearth—as one would in the 1800s—to craft a veritable cornucopia of seasonal delights complemented by beer, wine, and ingredient-driven cocktails.

POSTINO WINECAFÉ

Today, this destination has eight (and counting) locations across Arizona, but in 2001, Postino opened its first venue as a single wine bar in the former Arcadia Post Office. Inspired by its co-founders’ travels, Postino initially offered an assortment of wine alongside a limited menu of snacks and the bruschetta boards one might find in Italy. The name, which means “postman” in Italian, honors both the original post office locale and the Mediterranean-style dining that comprise the menu’s backbone.

PHIL’S GRILL AT GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB

Also known as “Lefty’s Lair,” Phil’s Grill is an homage to golf icon Phil

Top: George

“Geordie” Hormel was the inspiration behind this locale’s name.

Bottom: ZuZu honors matriarch Rosalyn “Rosie” Bennett Lyon, also known as ZuZu.

Mickelson, winner of six PGA Tour major championships and current LIV Golf player. Since Grayhawk opened in 1992, Mickelson—an Arizona State University alum—has served as the course’s ambassador. Beyond immortalizing him as the eatery’s namesake, the cozy destination features memorabilia from his career over the past 30-plus years.

FARO & BRAG AT THE WESTIN KIERLAND RESORT & SPA

Back when Arizona was still part of the Wild, Wild West, local gamblers and cowboys loved Faro, a card game with a banker, chips, and often high stakes, as well as Brag, a game of chance often described as a three-card take on poker. Put them together, and the result is Faro & Brag, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s seasonally focused eatery that excels at showcasing the bold, rustic flavors of local and regional ingredients.

THE STOCKYARDS

In 1947, a cafe-style restaurant—The Stockyards—opened on Tovrea Land and Cattle Co. property, the world’s then-largest feedlot with over 300,000 cattle. When it burned down in 1953, the Tovrea family re-imagined the concept into a grand steakhouse, keeping the name to honor the surrounding stockyards. The restaurant, which has been modernized as needed over the years, still stands, and now offers wild game in addition to premium cuts of beef.

ZUZU AT HOTEL VALLEY HO

ZuZu, a neighborhood favorite and culinary bucket list destination for visitors, is named in honor of Rosalyn “Rosie” Bennett Lyon, also known as ZuZu. She was the beloved matriarch of the family that owns the independent Hotel Valley Ho, as well as a fantastic cook who believed that food is better when shared with loved ones.

RUSTY’S AT MOUNTAIN SHADOWS

Located at The Short Course at Mountain Shadows and boasting breakfast, lunch, and copious brews alongside some of the best views in town, many assume that Rusty’s is a cheeky reference to out-of-practice golfers. It is, however, named to honor Rusty Lyon, an Arizona commercial real estate icon, avid golfer, and the father of Scott Lyon, who spearheaded the historic property’s rebirth in recent years.

THE DUCE

In the 1920s, the area around Lincoln Street and Central Avenue in Downtown Phoenix was nicknamed “The Deuce,” both because it was the epicenter of the city’s produce industry as well as ground zero for gambling and speakeasies. Today, those crossroads are home to The Duce. A play on its colorful past, The Duce is a nostalgic feast for the senses, with its three stages, multiple bars, boxing ring, 1965 Airstream trailer that doubles as a kitchen, full-scale eatery, dance floor, and more.

GERTRUDE’S RESTAURANT AT DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN

In 1939, Gertrude Divine Webster founded Desert Botanical Garden. An avid environmentalist, upon her passing in 1947 she left her estate to support the Garden’s continued preser-

vation and growth. In 2012, in honor of the visionary herself, Gertrude’s opened at the Garden, offering—naturally—a craveable menu of farm-to-table dishes that utilize ingredients from across the Southwest.

GEORDIE’S RESTAURANT & LOUNGE AT WRIGLEY MANSION

The late George “Geordie” Hormel was many things, including the composer behind music on Lassie, Gunsmoke, and Ozzy & Harriett, as well as heir to Hormel Foods. Perhaps most importantly for Phoenicians, he is the man who—with his wife, Jamie—purchased Wrigley Mansion in 1992 when it was in disarray and helped lovingly restore it to glory. Today, Jamie leads the property, naming its signature fine-dining concept in memory of her husband.

ZuZu, a neighborhood favorite and culinary bucket list destination for visitors, is named in honor of Rosalyn “Rosie” Bennett Lyon, also known as ZuZu.

TRADITION & HEALING

Rooted in Native American culture and history, Aji Spa is like no other spa in the world

When you step into Aji Spa at Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass, you are enveloped by more than just the relaxing atmosphere of a spa. In addition to the peaceful, soothing environment, you’re surrounded by a strong legacy of cultural heritage.

Aji Spa is like no other in the world. It is located in Chandler, which is part of the Sonoran Desert’s Gila River Valley, where a community of Pima and Maricopa tribes has inhabited the land for centuries. Today, in addition to being one of the elite Forbes Five-Star spas, Aji Spa offers the world’s most authentic Native American spa services.

“From pre-opening, Aji had a strong legacy of cultural heritage,” says Sara Howard, spa director at Aji Spa. “This tradition is at the center of the creation of our Indigenous spa treatments. The services were crafted by members of the Gila River Indian Community and the authentic stories of their people.”

The Elders were involved in the planning, design, and development of both the resort and the spa, ensuring that their culture was shared with care and authenticity. From the treatments to the architecture, heritage and culture are represented in every aspect.

The spa’s lobby features a stunning ceiling. Opposite page: The pool at the spa.

“It is important to share the story and traditions of the tribes. They have a profound understanding and respect for nature and the care and healing it provides,” Howard says.

Aji Spa boasts 17,500 square feet with 17 treatment rooms, 11 massage rooms, one couples massage room, one Vichy Shower room, one Cocoon Room, and three facial rooms. There’s also a salon, fitness center, pool, patio, and a poolside café that’s open for lunch service. The locker rooms include indoor and outdoor whirlpools and sauna and steam rooms.

And while you’ll certainly find a selection of expected spa and salon treatments—massages, facials, manicures, and more—there are treatments such as the Aji Chackra Balancing Treatment, S’he-Ek Chu Thash (Citrus Sunrise Journey), and Chipich (Indigenous Signature Body Scrub).

“The Four Directions Treatment uses local ingredients—blue corn, honey, salt, and pomegranate—to honor the Creation Story, which is shared in a beautiful mosaic in the Aji Spa lobby,” Howard says. “In the Creation Story, Earth Maker, Elder Brother, Vulture, and Coyote were the only survivors of a massive flood. Their first job was to locate the center of the earth, where the people would live, and create all things thereafter. The number four holds great significance for the Pima and Maricopa peoples. It is representative of the four directions, the four seasons, the four elements, and the four stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. East (white/salt) for illumination; South (tan/honey) for sandstorms that bring rain; West (red/pomegranate) for the sun setting; and North (blue/blue cornmeal) for the water of life. To Walk in Balance is to have Heaven (spirituality) and Earth (physicality) in Harmony.”

There are also several specialty treatments that incorporate a balm and mist that are made from the Shegoi plant, which is antimicrobial and antifungal, has healing properties, and which has historically been used by the tribe as a medicinal plant. It is considered sacred and “is harvested by an Aji community member with much care and gratitude.”

“The Shegoi plant has a wonderful aroma that invokes the scent of the desert after a rainstorm,” Howard shares.

Of course, even the typical treatments often have unique spins. Those who choose the Gila River Hot Stone Massage are presented with a tray of hand-painted message stones and are asked to select one to set the intention for their treatment and to take home, extending the spa journey.

This therapeutic oasis offers peace, healing, restoration, and a unique mix of contemporary spa treatments along with the sacred doctrines of the long local histories of the Pima and Maricopa tribes.

A sprawling 30,000-square-foot space in North Scottsdale is home to two venues that provide two different jazz experiences that are crafted to suit every mood. The Ravenscroft Hall, an intimate 200-seat concert hall, welcomes worldrenowned and Grammy Award-winning artists to its stage. The Meyer Constellation sound system offers an optimal listening experience from any seat. The Hall is the only music venue in Arizona to have this sound system, which is prized for its Cirque du Soleil-quality acoustics.

For those craving a more intimate vibe, the Jazzbird fits the bill. A modern lounge themed after an urban New York City jazz club, Jazzbird flaunts super-plush cabaret seating and the ultimate in low-light and cool colored ambiance. On Friday evenings September through June, guests enjoy the talents of popular and up-and-coming local musicians, accompanied by a catered dinner along with wine, local craft beers, and cocktails.

At both venues, styles encompass every facet of the genre, ranging from flamenco to gypsy jazz, and music centered on vocals, horns, and pianos. Performers come from Arizona as well as New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville, and other music hubs. Headliners have included Dennis Rowland with The New Guard Big Band; jazz drummer Mark Guiliana; saxophonist Donnie McCaslin, who toured with David Bowie; Grammynominated saxophonist and bassoonist Ben Wendel; and recent Grammy-winner Samara Joy.

“We have the highest-end instruments that convey that true audience experience, and the level of artists that we bring are what sets us apart,” Ravenscroft Director David Bauer says. “We can adjust acoustic signatures through electronics to make it sound like a cathedral or dead as a doornail. You’ll hear no better sound in a live concert venue.”

And what has blossomed into a cool world-class live jazz destination in the heart of the desert began as a dream to preserve one of music’s most treasured genres while doing good.

Founded by renowned jazz pianist Bob Ravenscroft and his late wife, Gretchen, the venue has been producing jazz shows since 2021 as an outreach of Music Serving the Word Ministries, a private faith-based nonprofit foundation founded by the Ravenscrofts in 2006.

“They had a dream of building a great performing arts facility where music can be presented at the highest level possible,” Bauer says. “Bob’s musical legacy is the synthesis behind The Ravenscroft.”

The Ravenscrofts’ philanthropy has been vital in promoting and preserving the art for future generations through founding scholarship programs and generous donations to Arizona State University’s jazz studies program. Additionally, The Ravenscroft’s faith component further enables Bob and Gretchen’s calling to use music to pay fortune forward.

“We are not a church, but we have a mission to reach people with positive intent,” Bauer says. “Being able to share this heavenly music while doing outreach throughout the community and the world is part of who we are.”

The Ravenscroft has two venues: a concert hall and a lounge themed after an urban New York City jazz club.

CANDY LAND

For almost 60 years, Cerreta Candy Company has churned out irresistible and crave-inducing confections that have made the third-generation family-run business a sweet success

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISAAC ARJONILLA AND ALEJANDRO GUTIERREZ

With a spatula in hand, Tony Cerreta’s first official job at his family’s candy factory was dabbing the tops of still-soft chocolate candies as they passed by. He was 7 and needed to stand on a milk crate so he could see over the line.

“I would dab the tops to give it a little bit of texture,” he recalls. “As a kid, it was super fun to work in a candy shop.”

Decades later, he’s the vice president of Cerreta Candy Company, indicating that being a grown-up—who has also grown up—in a candy shop is still a pretty neat gig.

Since opening its doors in 1968, Cerreta Candy has been an iconic piece of Arizona history, drawing generations to its Glendale headquarters to peruse, sample, and go home with their choices of more than a hundred different salty, sweet, and chewy bites of dreaminess.

A PART OF HISTORY

The company specializes in old-fashioned candy making, and several items are from the original slate of offerings Tony’s grandfather, Jim Cerreta Sr., created when he launched the business. His signature toffee, old-fashioned creams, and recipe for his French mint chocolate that inspired other famous mass-produced chocolate mint candy renditions have earned global legendary status with their duplication. In fact, the company crafted a peppermint cookie for Williams Sonoma a few years ago, and today, sightings of similar versions are spotted in shops nationwide around the holidays.

Cerreta’s vast and decadent lineup spans nuts, taffys, barks, brittles, toffees, popcorn, and—of course—chocolates in creative, unique, and crave-inducing forms that have become the signature of the third-generation family-run business.

Candy enthusiasts across the country and Canada get these Southwest sweets shipped to their doorsteps, but sweet tooths worldwide are indulged with Cerreta’s private labeling services for international candy companies, such as one in Switzerland for which Cerreta customizes a kicky habanero chocolate.

JALAPEÑOS & STRAWBERRIES

Speaking of spicy sweets, in homage to its Arizona roots, Cerreta developed a chocolate-dipped jalapeño, which actually outsells its chocolate-covered strawberries. Recently, Tony saw the famed Harry & David holiday catalog featuring something similar, which even had him shaking his head.

“These are fresh jalapeños, whole, with the seeds and everything. They’re spicy. Who would’ve thought anyone would’ve got on that bandwagon?” he says while laughing.

TAKE A TOUR

But the treats aren’t the only crowd-pleasers. Tours of the factory are just as perennially popular. In roughly 30 minutes, guests learn the family history and get an up-close insight into what it takes to produce the tempting tastes for which the shop

At Cerreta Candy Company, making sweet treats is a family effort— and one that’s appreciated worldwide.

is known. Naturally, there are samples along the way. Unique hands-on activities—like decorating a chocolate teddy bear, doing an authentic taffy pull, or making a chocolate pizza with sugary embellishments that resemble pepperoni, mushrooms, and other toppings—are tantalizing wishes that can be granted.

Cerreta Candy Company, and its influence that extends beyond the desert, began with an elementary school romance in Canton, Ohio, where Jim Sr. met his wife, Beverly Ann Heggy. The couple dated throughout high school, and after they married, Jim Sr. worked at his fatherin-law Ben Heggy’s candy shop, Heggy’s Fine Chocolate and Nuts, where he learned the art of all things candy. Years later, the couple and their eight children moved to Arizona and launched the empire that bears his name.

A fourth-generation candy maker, Tony is among the more than two-dozen Cerreta

family members who work or have worked for the business, including his nieces and nephews who represent the business’ fourth generation and who are poised to take the reins one day.

SWEET MEMORIES

In this nearly six decades-old candy land, the memories abound.

When Tony was 3 or 4 years old, he and his sisters would fight for the right to lick their father Jerry’s shoes when he came home from working at the shop.

“They always had chocolate or caramel or some kind of candy stuck on them,” Tony says between bouts of hearty laughter. “My mom would say, ‘What are you doing? Put that down!’ It’s not the most appetizing story, I know …”

Getting pelted by random flying-out-ofnowhere marshmallows was also a common occurrence, mostly sparked and fueled by Jim

Sr. and his sons, who relished the attacks on their kids.

“You’d be walking around the factory, and something would hit you in the head. You’d look down and see a big marshmallow. My grandpa and uncles would be laughing because they just hit a goofy kid,” Tony says, chuckling. “The marshmallow fights were epic.”

Whether it’s the distinctive candies that influenced other iconic styles, desert-inspired sweets that can only be found here—like the jalapeño brittle—the authentic and altruistic charm that can only be exuded by a long-running independent family business, or all of the above, the secret sauce to Cerreta Candy Company’s long-standing special spot in people’s hearts is simple.

“Anytime you have chocolate and a bunch of guys having fun, it’s going to be a success,” Tony says. “It’s a sweet industry, and you can’t beat it.”

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Beloved chef, restaurateur, and television personality Giada De Laurentiis makes her mark in the Valley

Chef, entrepreneur, and restauranter Giada De Laurentiis is keeping busy in Scottsdale. She recently opened two new Italian restaurants, Luna by Giada and the fast-casual Pronto By Giada, both located in Caesars Republic Scottsdale. She’s been spotted often at the two restaurants, although she also juggles her time with her two other successful restaurants in Las Vegas.

Additionally, her Italian food, culture, and lifestyle e-commerce site Giadzy continues to showcase authentic content and products, including her own pasta line, Giadzy Pasta. The line features pasta made in Italy (and there’s a gluten-free option, as well) and products including olive oils, spices, a high-end line of table linens, gift boxes, and more. The platform also recently launched a new membership offering that gives subscribers exclusive recipes and content.

Born in Rome, raised in California, and trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, De Laurentiis—who has written 11 New York Times best-selling cookbooks and has Emmywinning cooking shows on the Food Network—delights in sharing her decades of experience and knowledge, inspiring Americans to live la dolce vita

Why did you choose Arizona for your newest locations?

Scottsdale is a great market. My cookbooks have always done very well here, and there’s a strong economy with a great restaurant scene, so it just felt like a natural fit. I was also lucky that I have a relationship with Caesars and Caesars Republic, so it just made sense.

What was your inspiration for these restaurants?

We serve coastal Italian cuisine with California influences. The ambiance of our restaurant reflects that coastal al fresco dining experience, and I am so happy with how the space turned out. Our menu is really fresh and new—there are a lot of items we’ve never served before. It has been a really fun and creative process!

Food to you is …  The great connector!

Your favorite dish to make?

Now that I have my own line of Giadzy pasta, I make it for my family several times a week. I’m loving my orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe lately.

Favorite ingredient?

Olive oil. I really use it on everything; I even use it for skin care!

Cooking tip you can share?  I mean, this has been my favorite trick forever, but salt your pasta water! Make it taste like the sea— it will change your pasta forever.

Why do you like the TV medium?   I started in TV before there was social media, so it was a really unique way to connect with people nationwide. Now I use social media all the time, but at the time, connecting with so many people was really unique and exciting.

If you weren’t a chef, you’d be … A race car driver!
