The Next Dive Bar

“Dive bars aren’t made, they become that over the decades because they don’t change, and always deliver. And that’s our goal with Mother Tucker’s Tavern,” says John Dolan, co-owner of one of the groups that launched this location in late September. Indeed, this Old Town Scottsdale location delivers.

Here, the vintage bar concept’s interior pairs cozy-chic party pub decor with a focused food and drink menu that features elevated bar snacks, craft beers, and retro-modern cocktails. Dig into the Flakey Sausage Bites, Beer Battered Pickled Onion Rings, or Banh Mi Hotdog, and sip on concoctions such as the Old Town Handshake, a 4-ounce pony bottle of Miller High Life, accompanied with 50ml bottles of popular shots like WhistlePig Whiskey and Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.

Open daily until late and early on weekends for football watch parties.

Cocktail Magic

In the five years since it opened its doors, bar Little Rituals in Downtown Phoenix at the Residence Inn/Courtyard by Marriott has garnered numerous awards, from being named to the Top 4 of Best U.S. Hotel Bars of the Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail® to being the most-awarded hotel bar in Arizona.

Those behind the destination’s success are celebrating the milestone by debuting a new cocktail menu with 11 new offerings. The menu—which also includes nonalcoholic options—focuses on embracing familiar and unusual flavors, cutting-edge techniques,

and a dedication to sustainable practices.

Try the Cruel Summer, a frozen, rum-based cocktail that boasts a creamy texture thanks to the frozen banana puree, and a balanced ratio of tang from tamarind and lime, or the Radicculous Spritz, a bitter, culinary cocktail featuring flavors of radicchio.

Of course, there is also an elevated menu of chef-crafted bar bites that pair perfectly with the drink options.

HAPPENINGS THIS MONTH:

LIGHT

BLOOM by HYBYCOZO, on view through Jan. 20, 2025, is where nature and light converge. Explore the Garden as it is transformed by stunning geometric light installations that illuminate the beauty of the desert landscape in a new way. As the sun sets, LIGHT BLOOM comes to life, casting intricate shadows and vibrant hues across the Garden. And, on Nov. 2-3, from noon-6 p.m., the Garden hosts a Día de Muertos celebration, with a community altar, vibrant procession, food, music, and more. Starting Nov. 1, a community altar centered on the legend of the Cempasúchil flower (marigold) and the story of Xóchitl and Huitzilin will be on display in Ottosen Gallery. It is believed, on Día de Muertos, the scent of the Cempasúchil flower guides the souls of the deceased to the offering waiting for them in the world of the living. The romantic tale of Xóchitl and Huitzilin unfolds in this ofrenda exhibit through dramatic visuals, including monumental flower sculptures and handcrafted silver hummingbirds made by artisans from Taxco de Alarcón. The deconstructed altar design will also feature the ceramic artwork of Oaxacan artist Rufina Ruiz Lopez. Place memories and wishes for loved ones on the ofrenda. The iconic Las Noches de las Luminarias also kicks off this month, on view on select nights from Nov. 29-Dec. 30 from 5:309:30 p.m. Experience glowing luminaria-lit trails, twinkling holidays lights, musical performances, entertainment, and festive food and drinks.

HAPPENINGS THIS MONTH: Dial M

For Murder runs from Oct. 19-Nov. 3. This show depicts what happens when secrets,

Should they face the consequences of humiliation, loss, or even death? Most importantly, who can they trust? The playwright’s exploration of the mind of a murderer uncovers that even the best laid plans

sometimes require improvisation because control is only an illusion.

5 Perfect Patios for Fall Dining

ALISONBAILINBATZ

After breaking records for excessive heat for months, it is finally fall in the Valley. Time to take advantage of it! Here are five local patios with food and drinks that are as delicious as the weather.

1TORO SCOTTSDALE

The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess recently completed a full renovation of Toro Scottsdale by Richard Sandoval, which invites guests on a culinary journey through the vibrant flavors and diverse culinary history of Central and South America. The update added a sultry mix of colors and textures—rich leathers, vibrant greens, moody lighting inside—as well as the new Sunset Bar patio, which is well named as it offers a nightly show when the sun sets behind the 18th hole of the iconic TPC Scottsdale. 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; www.scottsdaleprincess.com

2 MON CHÉRI

Fabulously feminine, Mon Chéri is a fully immersive experience and offers a visual feast on its three patios—one more extravagant than the next. The front and back patios boast multiple red and pink art pieces and vibrant floral decor in nearly every direction. The third patio is tucked into an open-air cave, covered from floor to ceiling with white, pink, and red roses. The menu is focused on charcuterie boards for every taste—even brunch-themed boards—and each colorful cocktail is crafted to be photographed. 7014 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; www. moncherirestaurants.com

3 SPIRE BAR

When the Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort debuted its multi-million-dollar renovation, among the most stunning additions was the Spire Bar. Located in the center of the property with views of Piestewa Peak, the al fresco concept features a 30-foot spire, which also serves as a public piece of art paying homage to Frank Lloyd Wright. In the evening, a beautiful light show reveals vibrant colors across the lawn. The eatery acts as the resort’s main social scene, offering craft cocktails, beer, wine, and a menu of elevated fare including bar bites, light bites, and more. 2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix; www.arizonabiltmore.com

4 TALAVERA

There are million-dollar views, and then there are the views from Talavera at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, which are priceless. Located at the base of Pinnacle Peak mountain and looking southward toward Phoenix so the entire city is within view,

the indoor-outdoor Spanish steakhouse has the service and sophistication one would expect from the Four Seasons brand, yet a seductive personality all its own. There are 180-degree views from nearly every seat on the patio, complemented by a glowing fire pit and floorto-ceiling glass that allows a seamless aesthetic from inside to out. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale; www. fourseasonsscottsdale.com

5 WEFT & WARP

ART BAR + KITCHEN

The living room-style patio at Andaz Scottsdale’s Weft & Warp offers views of both Camelback Mountain and the palm treelined resort, including the buzzy pool. Colorful accents accentuate the modern space, as does the large fire pit tailor-made for a celebration or to set the stage for romance. The menu leans toward Mediterranean but with global and Southwestern flavors that add a special kick. 6114 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.andazscottsdale.com
