PHOENIX + SCOTTSDALE

Tiki-Tastic

Celebrity chef and restaurateur Richard Blais—you may recognize him from Bravo’s Top Chef series and Fox’s Next Level Chef, among other achievements—opened another restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort last month. Tiki Taka offers shared plates highlighting flavors from Japanese and Spanish cultures, while incorporating local ingredients from the Southwest, including hot and cold tapas, pintxos, yakitori, and sushi. The beverage program features playful takes on classics that complement the food menu, alongside sake flights and wines.

Try the Pork Belly with fish sauce and apple caramel and Chorizo Gyoza, pan fried, with sherry dip.

Mexican Marvel

The recent opening of Elvira’s in Scottsdale’s DC Ranch brings an authentic—and iconic—taste of Mexico to the area. The restaurant first opened in Nogales, Mexico, in 1927, remaining a renowned tourist spot for 82 years before the founder’s grandson moved it to Tucson in 2010, where it continued to thrive.

This new second location brings signature dishes from the Tubac menu—including the iconic Chile en Nogada, a stuffed poblano pepper crowned with walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds, and the luscious Mole Negro Oaxaqueñ—and adds new dishes and cocktails that also celebrate Mexican cuisine’s vibrant flavors and textures, serving them up in a fine-dining atmosphere.

FEELING SAUCY

If you’re a fan of the popular pizza and Italian spot Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, you don’t need to worry about craving it after you head back home. The restaurant brand launched a line of pasta sauces to bring authentic Italian flavors straight to your pantry. The options include Grimaldi’s Marinara Sauce, Grimaldi’s Tomato Basil Sauce, and

Grimaldi’s Arrabbiata Sauce. Each is crafted with tomatoes from the San Marzano region in Italy, extra virgin olive oil, and Grimaldi’s own unique blend of spices.

Both the sauces and recipes are available online at https://shop.grimaldispizzeria.com, as well as at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria locations throughout Metro Phoenix.

Bring home the flavors of Grimaldi’s Pizzeria.

Pickleball Perfection

The pickleball craze is just as popular here in Metro Phoenix as in other parts of the country. And, the newest locale to open for the sport is perhaps the most unique— Electric Pickle not only offers pickleball, but dining and outdoor entertainment. In fact, it’s a first of its kind in the country.

The centerpiece of Electric Pickle in Tempe is its two-story, 12,000-square-foot

indoor and outdoor restaurant, where globally inspired dishes and craft cocktails deliver flavor that caters to both casual diners and culinary adventurers. Menu items range from Seared Ahi with smoked mustard ponzu and Asian slaw to Garlic Noodles & Shrimp tossed in roasted garlic butter and parmesan.

There are nine pickleball courts (four of which are covered) and five of those have cutting-edge AI technology that includes scorekeeping via smart wristbands.

Golf simulators and a pro shop round out the offerings.

The Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room
Great ideas for a perfect date outing in Metro Phoenix

Whether you’re visiting over Valentine’s Day or you’re here any other day of the month—or year!—and are looking for great date ideas, there are plenty of unique outing options. Here, some of our favorites.

ENJOY NATURE

At Desert Botanical Garden (1201 N. Glavin Pkwy., Phoenix; https://dbg.org), explore five thematic trails filled with 50,000 desert plants of the world, including (of course) the local Sonoran Desert. In addition to the stunning scenery, there are events and special exhibits, including LIGHT BLOOM by HYBYCOZO (through March 30), Music in the Garden (Feb. 7, 14, 28), and the winetasting experience Vines & Finds (Feb. 15-16).

Hiking is another way to explore the Valley’s flora, as well as stunning scenic views. There are numerous trails to choose from, including those on the iconic Camelback Mountain (Echo Canyon Trailhead: 4925 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; www.phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations/camelback-mountain), but Hole-in-the-Rock Trail (625 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix;

www.phoenix.gov/trails/locations/papago-park) may offer one of the most unique spots. The trail is an easy .2 mile natural dirt and step path that wraps around Hole-in-the-Rock Butte and showcases a large natural viewing hole in the butte—offering a perfect frame for a stunning view of Metro Phoenix.

If water calls to you more, take a sightseeing or dinner steamboat cruise aboard The Dolly Steamboat (16802 AZ-88, Tortilla Flat; https://dollysteamboat.com), a replica of a classic American sternwheeler.

TAKE IN A SHOW

The Valley has a thriving performing arts scene, with multiple venues in most cities. At ASU Gammage (1200 S. Forest Ave., Tempe; www.asugammage.com), not only are there performances, but the venue regularly hosts touring Broadway productions. This month, catch Some Like It Hot (Feb. 11-16). Scottsdale Performing Arts (7380 E. Second St., Scottsdale; https:// scottsdaleperformingarts.org) offers numerous shows, while The Phoenix Theatre Company (1825 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; https://phoenixtheatre.com) is showing Jersey Boys (Feb. 19-May 4). At Arizona Broadway Theatre (7701 W. Paradise Lane, Peoria;

Desert Botanical Garden

https://azbroadway.org), make it a full evening—this locale offers a dinner-and-a-show experience. Hello, Dolly! is running through Feb. 21.

If music speaks to you more, the MIM Music Theater— part of the Musical Instrument Museum (4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix; https://mim.org) always offers a variety of concerts in its acoustically superb 300-seat venue. Meanwhile, the Ravenscroft (8445 E. Hartford Drive, Scottsdale; https://theravenscroft.com), is a 30,000 square foot jazz venue that features live music on the weekends, from up-and-coming local artists to Grammynominated artists. And the popular Arizona Musicfest (various locales; www.azmusicfest.org) concert series features concerts this month from artists including The Tenors and Mandy Patinkin.

GET CREATIVE

Instead of just giving each other flowers, why not learn to arrange them yourselves? Stemistry (9015 E. Via Linda, Scottsdale; 6601 E. McDowell Road, Scottsdale; 618 E. Adams St., Teeter-Carriage House, Phoenix; www.stemistry.com) is a whimsical and unique concept that is part flower bar, part coffee lab.

SOLVE A PUZZLE

Learn a little about Downtown Scottsdale as you try to solve a puzzle while traveling on a golf cart with Puzzle Rides (https:// puzzlerides.com). This escape room-type puzzle challenge places you on a golf cart (with a driver) to find clues around the area before your time runs out.

TAKE IN A MUSEUM

DINE OUT

Of course, what’s a date without some food? Enjoy your date with some, well, dates. Stop by Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry (3039 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; https://sphinxdateranch.com), a popular locale offering locally-sourced dates and edible gifts for more than 70 years, and enjoy a date milkshake on the patio. For music and a meal, check out Organ Stop Pizza (1149 E. Southern Ave., Mesa; https://organstoppizza.com). Here you’ll find the world’s largest Wurlitzer Theater Organ, as well as a variety of pizzas, pastas, and a salad bar. The venue seats 700, and the organist plays tunes that range from Bach to Britney.

If you’re looking for something more romantic, at The Boulders Resort & Spa (34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Carefree; www. theboulders.com), you can reserve a custom private starlight dinner for two (you do not need to be a guest of the resort to book these). The most opulent is Night Glow on the 6th Fairway. The six-course menu is served in a private location and there is a private hot air balloon “glowing” throughout the evening and available for vertical rides. Or, enjoy a five-course menu at Promise Rock, with its ancient boulder rock formations and a cascading waterfall, or a four-course menu at Sunset Point. All experiences must be reserved prior.
