Pinnacle Brewing Company’s Le Peak Belgian IPA won silver at the Ultimate IPA Awards.

COURTESY PINNACLE BREWING COMPANY

BEST IN BREW

The family-owned locale Pinnacle Brewing Company launched in mid-2024 when it opened its Scottsdale taproom, and is already offering some of the best beers in the country. Its Le Peak Belgian IPA won a Silver Medal at the Ultimate IPA Awards in the Belgian IPA category. Just prior, the company was awarded a statewide Gold Medal from the Arizona Craft Beer Association.

“Le Peak was crafted as a tribute to Green Flash Brewery’s Le Freak, which helped popularized the Belgian IPA style,” says Brewmaster Wyatt Wilson. “Sadly, Green Flash ceased operations in 2019, but we are happy that Le Peak will keep the tradition moving forward. What we were striving for with Le Peak was to balance the Belgian Abbey Ale and IPA styles. What we achieved is a complex beer

with notes of citrus, kumquat, sweet fruit, with a phenolic Belgian yeasty finish.” Pinnacle’s motto is “Beer Reinspired,” which pays homage to regional traditions while giving license to new interpretations of classic styles. 15111 Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.pinnaclebrewing.com

Sip wine at the new Pinard Wine Bar.

Love wine? North Scottsdale’s new Pinard Wine Bar offers a European style of dining and wine-drinking, which was inspired by owner Letty Ebel’s family’s extensive travels throughout Europe. Ebel’s family is no stranger to the hospitality world. Those familiar with Metro Phoenix and the Midwest will recognize the names Two Brothers Brewing, Two Brothers Tap House, Two Brothers Roundhouse, and The Craftsman Cocktails & Kitchen. This new venture features European-inspired classic dishes such as beef bourguignon and ratatouille. And true to its name, there is an extensive selection of wines—more than 40 by the glass and over 200 by the bottle, most of which are European. Fun fact: Pinard is slang for “red wine” in French. The locale opens at 3 p.m. Tues.-Sun. 20469 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.pinardwinebar.com 20 ARRIVED_PHOENIX+SCOTTSDALE

Ready to take a bite out of 2025? With a slew of hotly anticipated restaurants opening their doors in late 2024, and a growing number of eateries planning to debut in early 2025, this year promises to be the Valley’s most delicious to date. Here are some that should not be missed.

Melissa Maggiore Meyer, daughter of late culinary icon Tomaso Maggiore, opened this pizzeria at The Summit in Scottsdale in December. Inspired by her father’s first restaurant concept, which opened in 1969 in New York, and named to honor her mother, Patricia’s Pizza serves brick-oven pizza made with locally sourced and Italian imported ingredients, using the recipes that have been passed down through generations of the Maggiore family. 32607 N. SAINT URBAN WINE BAR Named after the patron saint of wine vintners, Saint Urban is a stylish, elevated neighborhood wine bar that opened in November in Scottsdale’s McCormick Ranch neighborhood. Led by chef/owner Christopher Collins, Saint Urban’s all-day menu features several bruschetta options, including prosciutto with herb goat cheese, avocado with lime, and spicy capocollo with truffle goat cheese, as well as a raw bar and a selection of handhelds and salads. The wine menu boasts 30 wines by the glass, a menu of craft beers from across Arizona, and an elevated cocktail program. 8260 Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.sainturbanaz.com

LA ZOZZONA This new signature dining experience at the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort is the brainchild of Top Chef winner and James Beard darling Richard Blais. La Zozzona, which means “messy delicious” in Italian, is inspired by Blais’ extensive travels throughout the cities and countryside of Italy. Of note are the house-made pastas—both those made daily in-house, as well as dried pastas imported from Italy—influenced by the trattorias of Rome, wood-fired steaks that

pay homage to Florence and Tuscany, and the extensive selection of Italian and rare wines. Insider tip: save room for the Tableside Tiramisu and Hazelnut Chocolate Cake. Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort, 7500 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale; www.lazozzona.com

VELVET TACO This globally inspired taco concept opened in Old Town Scottsdale in November. The two-story eatery is open as late as 3 a.m. on select nights and brims with bright pops of color, exterior neon lighting, natural wood textures, and irreverent wall murals. The menu boasts more than 20 tacos inspired by world cuisine. Some favorites are the Beer Battered Cauliflower with queso blanco, corn pico de gallo, and candied pepitas, and the Cuban Pig, spotlighting low and slow-cooked pulled pork. 4166 N. POSTINO WINECAFÉ, NORTH ITALIA, AND BLANCO COCINA + CANTINA The Park at 83 in Peoria recently opened the doors to Postino WineCafé, North Italia, and Blanco Cocina + Cantina. While these are not the first locations of the Arizona-born restaurants, the recent openings are significant in that they mark the first-ever West Valley outposts for each of the concepts. Postino is known for boutique wines and a menu of bruschetta, paninis, and crave-worthy charcuterie boards, while North features modern Italian fare, and Blanco is a laid-back take on modern Mexican food. 8191 W. Paradise Lane, Peoria, www.commonbonddg.com/properties/ the-park-at-83

ÉLEPHANTE This spectacular fine-dining concept in Scottsdale is named to honor the Arco dell'Elefante, a rock formation on an island off the Sicilian coast that resembles an elephant. The island is dry and covered in cacti, much like the Valley, but located in the heart of Mediterranean culinary culture. As such, the menu is focused on all things coastal Italian with an eye-popping assortment of perfectly plated dishes ranging from diver scallops with citrus butter and whole lobster piccata with caper brown butter to dry-aged bone-in 26 ARRIVED_PHOENIX+SCOTTSDALE

ribeye and wood-fired puccia, which is a puffed, soft bread from Italy’s Puglia region. The beverage program is a mix of classics and trending cocktails—notably frozen offerings and shareable punch bowls—and a trained sommelier is always on the floor to offer wine pairing suggestions. TORO SCOTTSDALE BY RICHARD SANDOVAL In late 2024, the iconic North Scottsdale restaurant at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess overlooking the 18th hole of the TPC Scottsdale re-opened its doors after a significant re-imaging, offering guests a unique, fine-dining journey through the vibrant flavors and diverse culinary history of Central and South America. Drawing inspiration from the culinary traditions of Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, and beyond, Chef Richard Sandoval's vision celebrates the diversity of pan-Latin cuisine in a way few have showcased before. GEORGE & GATHER RESTAURANT, BAR & MARKET Scheduled to open in February in the heart of Downtown Chandler, George & Gather is an all-new, all-day hangout featuring gourmetfrom-scratch fare served daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Housed inside a beautifully restored former commercial space, the name is both a nod to President George Washington as well as the welcoming neighborhood appeal the space plans to offer. All items on the menu will be organic and free of seed oil. Think hearty grass-fed burgers, farm-fresh salads, and signature hand-tossed sourdough pizzas made with a 130-year-old starter. Plus, coffee lovers will enjoy specialty coffee drinks made with refined sugarfree homemade syrups. 336 S. Washington St., Chandler; www.georgeandgather.com

a dance floor, a showstopping bar and cocktail lounge, and two intimate private dining rooms that can be joined into one large space. The well-curated menu will offer elevated, inventive colorful shared plates, large format entrees, and a formidable tequila and cocktail program.

151 TAVERN Modeled after an upscale New York tavern, expect a menu of “fancy comfort food” when 151 makes its debut in the Biltmore area later this year. The food will be complemented by cocktails that draw from the classics, from Manhattans to martinis, paying homage to the golden era of fine spirits and cocktails. There will also be a speakeasy bar within the tavern.

FORMATION BREWING Set to open in early 2025 in Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row, Formation Brewing is the newest concept from the minds behind Denver Beer Co. Its aim is to celebrate Arizona through locally inspired beer and food. Designed to be a communal gathering space, Formation Brewing will be dedicated to creating meaningful experiences shared amongst family and friends, new and old, and inspiring an appreciation for craft beer and the community. www.formationbrewing.com

FILTHY ANIMAL Set to open in the coming months in Tempe, Filthy Animal will be an avant-garde homage to the beauty and brutality of the jungle. This wild yet elegant concept is centered around a wood-fire cooking pit, offering a culinary experience that promises to push boundaries Valley-wide. From vibrant flavors to striking interiors, Filthy Animal will deliver a dining adventure like no other in Arizona, merging fire-kissed dishes with the primal allure of the jungle.

ARIZONA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE One hundred rare, classic, and historic automobiles and motorcycles will be displayed at the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, held Sun. Jan. 19 at the Scottsdale Civic Center. “The Art of Automotive Engineering” was chosen as the theme for this seventh edition of the event, which is presented in partnership with Scottsdale Arts, the nonprofit organization providing artistic services to the city of Scottsdale. Past themes have included “The Art of Automotive Aerodynamics” and “The Art of Automotive Design.” The Concours, a professionally judged and curated assembly of rarely seen dream cars and highly valued collector vehicles,

is perfect for anyone who appreciates the beauty of expressive design. Each automotive item on display is an authentic example, whether original, restored, or custom, and they range from the earliest runabouts and “horseless carriages,” through the Art Deco era, to the exotic super sports cars of the modern age. View examples from Bugatti, Duesenberg, Stutz, and Ferrari. Sixteen classes were chosen for this year’s Concours, with awards in each class, along with special awards and the two coveted Best of Show trophies. Last year’s Best of Show winners were a pair of European sports cars: a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 (pre-war award) and a 1967 Lamborghini Miura (post-war award). The Concours is staged in the atmosphere of a stylish garden party, and period costumes are encouraged for both participants and spectators. A special Concours award will be presented for the most creative outfit. “The 2025 Arizona Concours field will showcase some of the world’s rarest and most-dramatic cars—featuring engineering and design that people rarely have the opportunity to see in person,” says Chuck Stanford Jr., who co-chairs the Concours along with Ed Winkler. 7 Warming Winter Soups ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Winter is finally here! Hurry, grab a spoon, and dig into all of these sensational seasonal soups across the Valley before the temperatures begin to creep back up again.

1

CALDO DE POLLO

The Caldo de Pollo (which is Spanish for Mexican chicken soup) at Otro Cafe uses whole chicken breast pieces instead of shredded or chopped meat. It also boasts snow peas, rice noodles, and fresh herbs. The soup is paired with freshly made tortillas, cabbage, lime, and a side of soy sauce for an added kick. $16. 6035 N. 7th St., Phoenix; www.otrocafe.com

2

MINESTRONE

This hearty staple in Mediterranean cuisine is crafted to perfection from scratch daily at Brody’s Italian. Lovingly simmered for several hours to allow the

flavors to layer over time, the minestrone is made using both chicken stock and marinara sauce, as well as freshly made pasta and copious chopped carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, and beans. $11. 10810 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; www.brodysitalian.com

3

SMOKEY SWEET POTATO SOUP

Carcara at Sheraton Phoenix Downtown focuses on celebrating local and indigenous Southwestern cuisine in all its dishes. Sweet potatoes are the star of the show in this vegan, gluten-free offering, enhanced by local pepitas that have been candied using maple syrup and

a touch of micro parsley that adds a tangy, floral finish. $12. 320 N. 3rd St., Phoenix; www.carcararestaurant.com

4

POZOLE

Slow-cooked pork is the base for this rich, brothy soup at The Vig. Spiced with ample red chili peppers and then combined with whole kernels of dried field corn—often called hominy—as well as cilantro, avocado, radish, red onions, and cabbage, it packs a flavorful punch of spice tempered by notes of cream-kissed herbs in every bite. $15. Multiple Valley locations; www.thevig.us

5

FRENCH ONION SOUP

This classic interpretation of the beloved European soup is done to perfection at Chop, Block & Brew at Harrah’s Ak-Chin. Chefs gently fry onions before cooking them in a meat stock for several hours and transferring an ample portion to a deep porcelain bowl. Croutons and Gruyère cheese are heaped atop the soup, and the bowl is baked until the cheese is bubbling before being garnished with crispy

4 onions. $10.95. 15406 Maricopa Road, Maricopa; www.caesars.com/ harrahs-ak-chin

7

RITA’S CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP

An Asian twist on a robust winter soup, tori paitan—a rich broth made from chicken bones— and a soy sauce-based seasoning called shoyu tare are simmered with garlic, braised chicken thigh, kimchi, bean sprouts, mushrooms, scallions, and chili crisp before being finished with a soft egg. $19. Gilbert and Phoenix locations; www.cleverkoi.com

This soup at Rita's Cantina & Bar combines onions, garlic, chilis, tomatoes, and chicken stock before blending the savory base with tortillas for a thick, creamy consistency. The broth is topped with pulled chicken, Jack cheese, and guacamole, and then garnished with crispy tortilla strips for a satisfying crunch. $14. JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, 5402 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale; www.camelbackinn.com
