Edible Empires
Meet the locally grown brands that are exploding in popularity across the Valley and beyond
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
In the culinary world, it is all about quality over quantity. In the case of these local brands, however, their exceptional quality has resulted in quantity, with each concept adding locations to keep up with diner demand.
INGO’S TASTY FOOD
In 2013, Ingo’s opened in Arcadia, offering a locally sourced menu—including a chicken sandwich and a frozen take on a greyhound that quickly earned legions of loyal fans—served in an architecturally interesting yet casual space. Buoyed by the success, Ingo’s has grown to three locations Valleywide by adding eateries in both Downtown Phoenix and the North Phoenix/Scottsdale border in recent years. www.ingostastyfood.com
BUCK & RIDER
Another Arcadia-born concept, Buck & Rider, opened its first restaurant in 2015 with a vision to offer thoughtfully sourced fresh seafood to desert dwellers. Beloved for its buzzy bar scene; time-stamped and continuously updated daily raw bar menu; market vegetables; and USDA certified, aged reserve beef custom cut to the kitchen’s specifications, today the restaurant boasts sister restaurants to the flagship located in Gilbert and Scottsdale. www.buckandrider.com
THE VIG
A third Arcadia gem! Founded in the popular neighborhood in 2006, The VIG has become a Valley institution, growing to six locations across Scottsdale, Downtown Phoenix, North Central Phoenix, and Peoria, with upcoming locations also planned for the Southeast Valley in the coming year. Boasting ample dogfriendly patios and modern American fare, The VIG keeps things simple with innovative flavor profiles—think turkey pastrami on a pretzel roll with sweet potato fries and a curry dipping sauce—and an impressive, ever-changing signature cocktail menu. www.thevig.us
HULA'S MODERN TIKI
This modern twist on the cult-favorite tiki bars of the 1950s and 1960s has a distinctly tropical vibe and seamlessly blends Polynesian and American flavors across both its food and drink menus. First opened in Uptown Phoenix in 2008, the brand and its elevated cocktails with old-school paper umbrellas, luaustyle pork, and expansive gluten-conscious offerings, has now also grown to include locations in both North Phoenix and South Scottsdale. www.hulasmorderntiki.com
COLD BEERS & CHEESEBURGERS
Founded in North Scottsdale in 2011, Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers excels at exactly what one would think given the name: beers and burgers, and lots of them. There are more than 150 selections of beer and well over a dozen half-pound burgers offered within the spaces, which are covered nearly wall to wall with flat-screen televisions. Complemented by upscale hot dogs, a menu of macaroni and cheese options, and an ample gluten-friendly menu, the brand has proven to be a juggernaut locally with 17 locations statewide and counting. www.coldbeers.com
SNEAKYBIRD
While a relatively new kid on the culinary block, this neverever fried chicken concept that was founded in 2022 in North Scottsdale has already grown to several locations across the Valley, including eateries in Gilbert, Queen Creek, Arcadia, and Surprise, with more slated in 2025. The family-owned concept, spelled in all lowercase letters to underscore its sneakygood and sneaky guilt-free product, has perfected a cooking process that retains the juiciness and flavor of fried chicken without using a drop of added oil. The menu of chicken dishes is complemented by handcrafted flatbreads, tater tots, and veggies. www.sneakybird.com
BOURBON & BONES CHOPHOUSE
Bourbon & Bones opened to great fanfare in South Scottsdale in 2016. Despite lofty competition, the brand’s Prime Elite wet-aged beef, which is among the top one percent of all U.S. cuts, as well as its fresh seafood and signature side dishes—not to mention the largest selection of bourbons and whiskeys in Arizona— helped the restaurant thrive. So much so that Bourbon & Bones has grown to three restaurant locations in the Valley, adding destinations in Chandler and Peoria, as well as a spin-off concept called BB Cocktail Lounge, which has eateries in South Scottsdale and within Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix. www.bourbonandbones.com
CHOMPIE’S
Lou and Lovey Borenstein founded Chompie’s Bagel Factory in 1979 with a dream of bringing classic family recipes from Queens, New York to Valley diners. This beloved concept grew to become a community favorite, and there are now Chompie’s
locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Glendale. While dining in, enjoy a vast menu of New York-deli-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Chompie’s also offers a wide array of to-go bakery and deli items, as well as catering and a full line of mail-order breads, bagels, and more. www.chompies.com
PITA JUNGLE
Pita Jungle, which is celebrating 30 years since its original location opened in Tempe, is a go-to local restaurant for Mediterranean-inspired food. With the mission of helping guests sustain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, the restaurants—22 and counting statewide, in most towns/ cities—serve up a diverse menu of tasty, fresh, wholesome foods, including a variety of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Pita Jungle’s menu is influenced by tastes from around the globe, with the benefits of the Mediterranean diet at the forefront. Menu options that include lean proteins, veggies, legumes, nuts, grains, and fruit. www.pitajungle.com
POSTINO WINECAFÉ
Postino WineCafé was born in a historic Arizona post office in 2001 and has since been dedicated to giving customers a hyper-localized dining experience within the community. Postino co-founders Craig DeMarco and Lauren Bailey built the brand on a foundation of revitalizing buildings and creating spaces that are integral to the neighborhoods that surround each location. The menu offers wine from a bevy of varietals; a wide selection of beer; handcrafted cocktails; an eclectic selection of snacks, soups, salads, and paninis; and—perhaps their most famous items—a dozen distinct types of bruschetta. That first Phoenix location has now expanded to eight Postino restaurants statewide (including in Tempe, Phoenix, Gilbert, and Scottsdale) and 30 total nationwide. www.postinowinecafe.com
NORTH ITALIA
North opened its first location in Scottsdale's Kierland Commons in 2002, offering a variety of modern Italian dishes including pasta made from scratch daily, hand-tossed pizzas, and lunch and dinner
options such the seasonal branzino, spicy Italian grinder, and braised short rib lumachel. Today, North has restaurants across Gilbert, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tucson, with a new location set to open in Peoria this month. The restaurant also expanded beyond Arizona in recent years, with 39 total locations nationwide. www.northitalia.com
SPINATO’S PIZZERIA & FAMILY KITCHEN
This year, the Tempe-based Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen partnered with the Arizona Cardinals to be the “Official Pizza of the Arizona Cardinals,” and its popular Chicago-style pizza will be served at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The news came during the family-owned brand’s 50th anniversary year. The Spinato family opened the first location in 1974 in Scottsdale, and today there are also destinations in Gilbert, Tempe, Ahwatukee, and Phoenix, as well as the concession locations in Footprint Center and State Farm Stadium. In addition to pizza, the beloved brand offers pasta, sandwiches, calzones, and salads. www.spinatospizzeria.com
THE LURE OUTDOORS
With Temps Dropping, it’s the Perfect Time of Year to Wander These Outdoor Destinations
BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
Outdoor shopping destinations are popular here in the Valley, and as the weather cools down, it’s the perfect time to go explore them. Here, some of our favorites
SCOTTSDALE
Scottsdale is known not only for its resorts, golf, and dining, but its extensive shopping destinations. While one of the largest indoor malls is located here—Scottsdale Fashion Square—there are numerous outdoor destinations where you can wander, shop, dine, and experience.
In the North Scottsdale area, Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland
Commons sit across the street from each other, both large walkable areas filled with numerous stores, restaurants, and activities.
The shopping at Scottsdale Quarter (15279 N. Scottsdale Road Scottsdale; www.scottsdalequarter.com) encompasses marketexclusive brands, locally owned specialty shops, and brand retailers, ranging from Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendt to urbAna, Urban Outfitters to Jennifer Croll, and Beach Bunny to Ariat. More than 20 culinary options offer a range of experiences, from highend steak destinations to sushi to ice cream offerings. This is a stay-and-play destination, as well, with a theater, Puttshack indoor mini-golf, and experiential retailers such as Lip Lab and Candle Chemistry. There are always also a variety of events being held at
Scottsdale Quarter, and a splash pad welcomes kid fun.
Kierland Commons’ (15210 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.kierlandcommons.com) upscale outdoor lifestyle center is home to more than 70 specialty retailers and restaurants, from Arhaus and ALO Yoga to Bad Birdie, ECCO, Kimes Ranch, and NightRider Jewelry. You can pick up local olive oils by the Valley’s Queen Creek Olive Mill, which has a retail location here. For dining, there’s Mastro’s Ocean Club, The Mission, Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar, and many others. This month, stop by for the Kierland Fine Art & Wine Festival held here on Oct. 26.
In Downtown Scottsdale (between approximately Camelback Road and 4th Street and 68th Street and 75th Street)—often referred
to as Old Town Scottsdale—find a large downtown area filled with boutiques; souvenir shops; jewelry and art with a Southwestern flair; restaurants; bars; museums; winery tasting rooms; a park; and unique landmarks such as the Soleri Bridge & Plaza, designed by famed architect Paolo Soleri.
The well-known Scottsdale Arts District is also part of the area, with galleries such as American Fine Art Inc. and Larsen Gallery lining Main Street and Marshall Way. There is also the SouthBridge (7154 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale) area along the Stetson Canal with shopping and dining.
Between the Southern and Northern areas of Scottsdale along Scottsdale Road in the heart of Scottsdale’s shopping, dining, and
resort corridor, are two other notable outdoor destinations, the SHOPS Gainey Village and The Shops at Hilton Village.
At the SHOPS Gainey Village (8777 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.theshopsgaineyvillage.com), find a variety of retailers from Ritzy Rags and Shoes to A Cool Breeze to Diva Women’s Wear, a clothing store for those sizes 14-24. Restaurants range from an Italian pizzeria to the popular brunch spot Hash Kitchen. The destination holds center-wide events, including its popular yearly Holiday Wine & Dine.
South of Gainey is The Shops at Hilton Village (6015-6155 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; https://reddevelopment.com/ hilton-village), which has more than 25 shops, local boutiques, restaurants, and specialty services. You can start your day at First Watch, The Daytime Cafe restaurant; shop at locations such as TBC To Be Continued upscale consignment store, Chico’s, Charmed Avenue, and The Linen Tree; and then dine at Veneto Trattoria Italiano or Tap House Kitchen later on.
PHOENIX
While Phoenix may be sprawling, people drive from all over to head to one of its main outdoor destinations, Biltmore Fashion Park.
The iconic Biltmore Fashion Park (2502 E. Camelback Road,
Phoenix; www.reddevelopment.com/biltmore-fashion-park), located in the popular Camelback Corridor, is a mix of luxury retail, dining, park-like green lawns, and relaxing fountains. There are more than 60 specialty shops and restaurants, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Ralph Lauren, Arhaus, Zinburger, Seasons 52, and Blanco Tacos + Tequila. There's also a Diamond-Level Life Time with a rooftop beach club.
GILBERT
One of the fastest-growing areas of Metro Phoenix, Gilbert is home to several outdoor shopping destinations.
The walkable Epicenter at Agritopia (3150 E. Ray Road, Gilbert; www.epicenteratagritopia.com) is nestled within the heart of Agritopia, a unique planned community that seamlessly blends all facets of living, celebrating the past, present, and future. Epicenter features hand-picked locations that better life for locals and tourists. Shop stores such as the local Bunky Boutique for fashions, Manor for sneakers and streetwear, and Why I Love Where I Live for unique local finds. Enjoy meals at restaurants like Buck & Rider, Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soup, Salt & Straw, and Matt’s Big Breakfast. Or, grab a coffee at Peixoto Coffee or enjoy a refreshing drink at Beer Barn.
Lifestyle center SanTan Village (2218 E. Williams Field Road,
Gilbert; www.shopsantanvillage.com) features top stores such as Dillard’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom Rack, lululemon athletica, Barnes & Noble, and Forever 21. Take a break from shopping the large area and grab a bite at locales including Bourbon & Bones, SALT Tacos y Tequila, Thirsty Lion Gastropub, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, and Shake Shack. If you’re looking for things to do, the destination features a splash pad, theater, escape room, and indoor playground. Events are also held here often.
There’s also the Heritage District in Downtown Gilbert (102 W. Vaughn Ave., GIlbert; www.discovergilbert.com/heritagedistrict), which has more than 30 restaurants and a variety of diverse shops, including chic boutiques and stores offering locally-crafted art and unique merchandise. Full of character (think mural-clad brick walls and glowing benches!), this is also the location of the iconic Gilbert Water Tower.
TEMPE
As you’d expect, the home of Arizona State University (ASU) is full of nearby shopping for both its students and visiting parents and tourists.
The Mill Ave District in Downtown Tempe, which runs along Mill Ave (between Rio Salado Parkway and University Drive; www. downtowntempe.com), is adjacent to ASU and is filled with shops, dining, and nightlife. Grab some ASU gear at Cactus Sports,
clothes at Urban Outfitters, and stop by Lotions & Potions. Of course, with hungry college kids nearby, there are also numerous dining options, ranging from taco shops to a brewpub, to a few more upscale options.
To the east, find Tempe Marketplace (2000 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., Tempe; www.tempemarketplace.com), a sprawling outdoor destination with 1.3 million square feet of retail space, over 100 restaurants and shops, and more than 300 events each year. This outdoor mall includes everything from Nike to H&M and Best Buy to Sephora. There are specialty shops and restaurants galore. For entertainment, enjoy axe-throwing destination Lumberjaxes, escape room Escapology, a theater, and a Dave & Buster’s.
GLENDALE
In the heart of Glendale, adjacent to State Farm Stadium—home of the Arizona Cardinals—and anchored by Desert Diamond Arena, is Westgate Entertainment District (6770 N. Sunrise Blvd., Glendale; www.westgateaz.com). Filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment, there is plenty to do, see, and experience here— plan to spend many hours exploring.
In addition to shops and dining, there’s a comedy club, a splash pad, experiential golf, a theater, axe-throwing, and more, and there are center-wide events often, such as live music.

5 Iconic Landmarks
BYMICHELLEGLICKSMAN
Often, cities and towns have a specific landmark that, when viewed, lets a person know exactly where they are. Here, five iconic landmarks of towns and cities across the Valley.
1PHOENIX:CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN
The iconic Camelback Mountain is so named because its shape resembles that of a reclining camel—two rock formations resemble its head and back. Two hiking trails—both of which are challenging—lead to the summit, which sits 2,704 feet above sea level.
Those who prefer to view the mountain from afar can catch a glimpse of it from many local destinations—or even just driving down the street.
Echo Canyon trail: McDonald Drive east of Tatum Boulevard, Paradise Valley. Cholla trail: 64th Street and Cholla Lane (north of Camelback Road), Scottsdale; www.phoenix.gov/parks
2
FOUNTAIN HILLS: FOUNTAIN HILLS FOUNTAIN
The famous fountain, located in the center of town in a man-made lake in the middle of a large park, shoots water 560 feet in the air— which is 10 feet taller than Notre Dame Cathedral, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, and three times as high as Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park.
The fountain’s full height is only displayed on special occasions. For everyday viewing, it reaches a height of 330 feet.
The fountain runs every hour on the hour for 15 minutes, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. And on St. Patrick’s Day, the water is transformed to an emerald green.
12925 N. Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills; www.experiencefountainhills.org
3
GILBERT: WATER TOWER
Gilbert’s iconic water tower was built in 1927 to store water for firefighting and later used to store drinking water. After it was no longer needed, the town council preserved the iconic structure.
Since then, the tower—which is lit to celebrate various holidays and community initiatives—has been restored. It’s located in a park in Downtown Gilbert’s Heritage District next to the Historic Adobe Pump House, which was Gilbert’s first jail. A splash pad and other water initiatives were built nearby.
The area has been undergoing design improvements and reopens this winter.
45 W. Page Ave., Gilbert; www.gilbertaz.gov
4 SCOTTSDALE: LOVE SCULPTURE
Located on the grounds of Scottsdale Civic Center Mall in Downtown Scottsdale is one of artist Robert Indiana’s worldfamous iconic pop art LOVE sculptures. They’re found in cities
around the world, from New York to Tokyo, but you can see one right here.
The one in Scottsdale stands 12 feet tall, making it a perfect backdrop for photos. It’s a favorite with both locals and visitors who flock to the sculpture to take photos with it.
3806 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale; https:// scottsdalepublicart.org
5 TEMPE: TEMPE TOWN LAKE
Who says there’s no water in the desert? This lake, which spans more than two miles, was created by damming a portion of the dry Salt River and adding water. Today, the destination offers a sandy patch of beach on the north side, boating, fishing, nearby walking and biking trails, a park that surrounds it that’s often used for large-scale events, and iconic bridges.
Located in the heart of Tempe, from west of McClintock Road to east of Priest Road between Rio Salado Parkway and Curry Road; www.tempetourism.com
