A Sweet Destination
A stop at Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale just got a little bit sweeter. Joining the large open-air destination is the eatery, retail shop, and celebrity favorite Sugar Factory, which debuted a more than 10,000-square-foot restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, an outdoor cafe, and a walk-up ice cream bar. Of course, Sugar Factory’s signature candy dot wall is near the entrance, and there’s also a candy heart lounge and the candy retail store. Plenty of photo opps exist, from large flower walls
with neon signs perfect for posing in front of, an elaborate threedimensional floral ceiling, and the candy heart wall to video walls and other colorful decor. If you’re there for more than photos and candy, the restaurant’s menu features an array of dishes, including burritos, sushi, and fajitas, as well as unique desserts. Celebrity chef Angelo Sosa—known for his award-winning food, as well as his appearances on Bravo’s Top Chef—and Mark Stone, a restaurant developer and Sosa’s long-time business partner, recently collaborated to open Kembara. A cool spot designed to evoke an energetic vibe inspired by Asia’s night markets, the destination is a reflection of both Sosa’s and Stone’s culinary odysseys traveling, cooking, and tasting across the broad continent of Asia throughout their careers, pulling inspiration from Chiang Mai to Hanoi to Tokyo to Penang and beyond. It offers fresh interpretations on beloved recipes that simultaneously honors the lineage and legacies of generational dishes. Dine on everything from chilled pho salad to black pepper Maine lobster and banana leaf halibut to lemongrass pork collar. There’s also a separate vegetarian menu. Don’t forget to pair your meal with one of the unique cocktails—they incorporate Asian spirits and ingredients. Kembara also offers one of the largest collections of Asian spirits. J.W. ARIZONA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
One hundred rare and historic automobiles will be on display at the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, held Sun., Jan. 21 at the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center. This year’s theme is The Art of Automotive Design, and the event will focus on some of the world’s most superb examples of the art of coachbuilding and car design, showcased in the luxury atmosphere of a stylish garden party. The Concours is not an auction, but a professionally judged and curated assembly of rarely seen cars and highly valued collector vehicles. In fact, last year’s Best of Show 21
winner was a 1947 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Cabriolet with a sweeping body designed by Giuseppe Figoni. The judged vehicles range from antiques from the dawn of motoring through pre-war classics, sports and competition cars, and modern-day exotics. “The 2024 Arizona Concours field will showcase some of the world’s rarest and most-dramatic cars—designs that people rarely have the opportunity to see in person,” says Chuck Stanford Jr., who co-chairs the Concours along with Ed Winkler. O
ne of the hottest trends for 2024 is the immersive cocktail bar, which are spaces that pair well-crafted drinks with a multi-
sensory adventure, be it via a speakeasy vibe, visual and/or auditory effects, on-site entertainment, or through interactive cocktails themselves. Looking to try one (or more)? Here are some best bets.
DISTRICT DOME If visiting Desert Ridge Marketplace, it is tough to miss the newly erected 50-foot spherical dome on property. Called District Dome, the structure plays host to pop-up cocktail experiences throughout the year, changing its themes with the seasons and for the holidays, but always offering a cozy drinking and dining experience paired with a 90-minute, state-of-the-art, ever-changing projection show. THE OSTRICH
BARCOA AGAVERIA
The Roaring ’20s are alive and well … in Chandler! Located in the basement of Crust (follow the red lights down to a wooden door to access) this speakeasy-style cocktail bar offers the chance to channel your inner Gatsby with an Arizona twist. The Ostrich is inspired by the rich history of the City of Chandler, dating back to the founding days of 1912. Cocktails harken back to Prohibition with small twists, weaving past and present seamlessly in the glass. 10 N. San Marcos Place, Chandler; www.theostrichbar.com
Take a deep dive into the world of Mexican spirits at this intoxicatingly authentic palace dedicated to all things agave. The two-level bar is really two concepts in one. Upstairs is a cantina where agave spirits are used in approachable cocktails near a LatinX indigenous art gallery, while the basement offers a collegelevel course in agave spirits—classifications, processes, species, and the cultural significance of each—all in a setting where every single item was made by hand in Mexico. 829 N. 1st Ave., Phoenix; www.barcoaphx.com
CENTURY GRAND This 2023 Tale of the Cocktail Spirited Award for Best U.S. Cocktail Bar, which is the industry’s highest honor, is three immersive cocktail experiences in one unassuming brick building. First there is Platform 18, which is housed in a replica turn-of-the-century Pullman train car. Through its drink menu and visual effects, Platform 18 takes you on a journey through the Louisiana Bayou. Next is Grey Hen, which looks like a 1920s apothecary and “prescribes” hand-selected spirits, along with its own mixology magic. Finally there is UnderTow, which is designed to feel as if one is sailing on a 19th century clipper ship and excels in exotic cocktails. 3626 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; www.centurygrandphx.com
BITTER & TWISTED
Whiskey lovers should head to Hotel Adeline. There, seek out the telephone booth randomly situated just off the main lobby. Its vintage dark wooden look most definitely feels out of place given the colorful, bright airy design of the rest of the hotel. That may be because the telephone booth is a hidden door to Straight Up Whiskey Bar, a secret lounge with premium and rare curated whiskeys. 5101 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.hoteladeline.com
POPPY’S OFFICE Paul Keeler, often called Poppy, was a giant in the Arizona culinary scene, most recently known for his Liberty Station American Tavern and Smokehouse restaurants, as well as Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse. When he passed away in 2021, his family honored him by creating Poppy’s Office. Located next door to Liberty Station Terravita, the speakeasy-style cocktail bar is a near replica of Keeler’s private office, complete with personal mementos, family portraits, and memorabilia of Keeler’s favorite teams. There, enjoy cocktails that honor his favorite spirits or tell a story about his life, many with interactive elements like smoke, fire, and even wooden replicas of Poppy’s favorite cigar. 34422 N. Bitter & Twisted is housed inside the former Arizona Prohibition Headquarters at the historic Luhrs Building in Downtown Phoenix. Refurbished but still with a historic vibe throughout, the team crafts such intricate, interesting cocktails that each year they publish an actual collectable book of their menu, with offerings ranging from next-level quirky to fanciful and full of spirits from around the world—all with an interesting theme or story and often wild garnish, color, vessel, or texture. 1 W. CAPTAIN’S CABIN
THE CAVE
There is a funky porthole on the exterior wall at HULA’s Modern Tiki. A closer look at it reveals it is not just a tiki-themed decoration. It is actually part of a secret door to the Captain’s Cabin, HULA’s bar-within-a-bar. Furnished to feel like you’re in a vintage sailing museum (but cooler!), the menu is meant to transport guests to island time in look, feel, smell, and taste. It is also one of the best bars in Arizona to sample fine rums from around the world. They have them both on their own or in flights, creating a tour of the tropics for the taste buds. 5114 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 7213 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; High Street, 5450 E. High St., Phoenix; www.hulasmoderntiki.com
Quartz opened just last year in Downtown Phoenix, featuring gemstone-themed cocktails. Impressive on its own, hidden within a secret doorway inside Quartz is The Cave, its bar-within-a-bar. There are rose-gold mirrors from floor to ceiling inside, making it feel a bit like you're in an actual quartz stone. Its inspiration is entirely unique to the area: deserts around the world, from Arizona to Antarctica (yes, Antarctica is technically a desert). Each cocktail tells a desert story through flavor and offers some sort of whimsical sensory experience for the guest. 341 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix; www.quartzphx.com
TROPHY ROOM
An immersive Italian cocktail bar? Yes, one not only exists, but it is in the heart of Phoenix, located in the basement of First & Last, a husband-and-wife owned eatery with a menu that boasts everything from Dungeness crab arancini with tomato emulsion to a tomahawk Ibérico pork chop with creamed mustard greens. Little Debbie’s is dedicated to owner Ashley Hammond’s extroverted mother, and the menu is a truly eclectic and cool adventure through Italian-inspired cocktails. 1001 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; www.firstandlastphx.com
When Wren & Wolf opened Downtown in 2022, its largerthan-life interior and innovative menu of New American and experiential dishes were the talk of the town. Next, Wren & Wolf opened an extension to its restaurant called Trophy Room. The hidden cocktail bar does not allow phones or photos into the space to keep its air of mystery, but expect decadence in every direction, both in its aesthetic and across its buzzed-about cocktail menu. 2 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; www.bestcocktailbarphoenix.com

THINGS TO DO IN THE VALLEY

Great Golf
There are a plethora of golf courses in the Valley of the Sun. Here, just a few to put on your must-play list. MICHELLE GLICKSMAN 1. WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB
At We-Ko-Pa, there are two award-winning golf courses from which to choose—the Cholla course was designed by Scott Miller and plays through shady arroyos and over desert ridges, while the Saguaro Course was designed by Coore/Crenshaw and—rare for the area—was built for walking with greens situated near to the next tee. 18200 E. WeKoPa Way, Fort McDowell; www.wekopa.com
2. TPC SCOTTSDALE
Play on the TPC Scottsdale’s the

Stadium Course, home of the fanfavorite WM Phoenix Open, the largest-attended golf tournament in the world. The PGA TOUR property’s championship course was designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, while its sister course at TPC Scottsdale, the Desert Course, was designed by Randy Heckenkemper. 17020 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.tpc.com
3. TROON NORTH GOLF CLUB Both the Pinnacle Course and Monument Course here were
JANUARY 2024
ranked among the “Top 10” Best Golf Courses You Can Play in Arizona by Golfweek. The two 18-hole courses, both originally designed and renovated by Tom Weiskopf, stretch across natural ravines and foothills near Pinnacle Peak, with giant boulders dotting the landscape. 10320 E. Dynamite Blvd., Scottsdale; www.troonnorthgolf.com
4. GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB
The Tom Fazio-designed Raptor course is a par-72 that stretches over gentle hills and across shaded natural arroyos. The PGA Jr. League Championship is held on Raptor, as is the NCAA’s Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships (2021-2023). The Talon Course, designed by David Graham and Gary Panks,
3
offers views of the nearby McDowell Mountains, as well as the city skyline. Its back nine is built around a series of deep box canyons with a handful of holes laid out along steep drop-offs and thick stands of trees. 8600 E. Thompson Peak Pkwy., Scottsdale; www.grayhawkgolf.com
5. THE BOULDERS CLUB
Both the championship North Course, a par 72, and the South Course, a par 71, were designed by Jay Morris. They both were also built into the desert foothills, and offer stunning views, including of the unique boulder formations. The South Course even features holes that go right up into the striking boulders. 34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Carefree; www.bouldersclub.com
