Ready to EAT? Chef Stacey Weber has long been a Valley favorite for her healthy, tasty, ready-toserve meals and private chef services. Now, she’s added a new concept to her culinary offerings—a brick-and-mortar modern neighborhood eatery and market in Scottsdale’s McCormick Ranch. Amelia’s by EAT, named for Weber’s grandmother, offers mindful creations made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. “We will be featuring all the

most loved items from EAT and adding freshly baked breads, artisan market foods, organic coffee with house-made syrups, and delicious cocktails,” Weber says. “The idea is to make eating well easy and enjoyable. I’m creating the place I’ve always wanted in Scottsdale.” Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Amelia’s by EAT also has an all-day counter service menu, including a BYOB (build your own board) nosh board, fresh handcrafted

cocktails, grab-and-go food, beverages, and grocery items. Menu favorites include the Stacey’s Famous Chicken Rice Enchilada and Gluten Free Pot Pie, Rotisserie Chicken Banh Mi, and Greek Falafel Salad. There are also salads, sandwiches, bakery items, and more. Settle in with the live acoustic music that fills the air on select nights, as well as the intimate Sunday suppers. 8240 N. Australian brand ZIMMERMANN has found a home in Arizona. The fashion favorite opened its first store in the state at Scottsdale Fashion Square, showcasing clothing, jewelry, and accessories. The boutique offers a curated experience, with furniture and art carefully selected and even made for the space—key pieces include an assortment of vases designed for the store by Australian ceramicist Nori Lindsay, alongside the sculpture Standing Man with Cup by Stephen Bird. An enhanced circular layout seamlessly interconnects three separate retail areas, combining runway, collection, and accessories with a luxurious lounge and adjacent fitting rooms. Sensational Center

Scottsdale’s main arts, culture, and hospitality epicenter may look a little different nowadays to those who have traveled to the area before. The city’s popular Civic Center area, located in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale, recently underwent a remodel. A community gathering place, the renewed and refreshed destination provides locals and visitors alike with a better experience than ever, perfect for art, culture, entertainment, and festivals. The new improvements include three new outdoor stages, kid-friendly play areas, botanical exhibits, and more. The East Bowl is one of the highlights. The stage is a centrally located, 360-degree performance structure. The season of performances ahead—including those scheduled for this month—is robust. Of course, art remains a core element of the Scottsdale Civic Center. Many of the beloved pieces of the Scottsdale Public Art Collection are back, with some in new locations. The intuitive Civic Loop provides a walking experience to view most of the nearby iconic public art. Take time to wander the area, view all it has to offer, and make sure to check the performance and event schedule at www.oldtownscottsdaleaz.com. Scottsdale Civic Center links Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale City Hall and Civic Center Library, the renowned Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and Scottsdale Historical Museum to Historic Old Town, Main Street galleries, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, and northbound to the Scottsdale Waterfront and Scottsdale Fashion Square.

SWEET TREATS

The newest ice cream parlor in Old Town Scottsdale was inspired by “the old-timey aesthetic and whimsy of Farrell’s,” a chain of ice cream parlors popular in the 1970s and 1980s, says its owner, Tom Medrano. The locale—Tom’s Incredible Ice Cream—serves ice cream cookie sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, Italian ices, soda floats,

waffles, eclectic sundaes, and much more. All ice cream is certified kosher, and the menu also includes vegan and gluten-free offerings to suit a variety of dietary preferences. It is also the only shop in Maricopa County that serves Hershey’s brand ice cream. 3712 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www. tomsincredibleicecream.com

Espresso, meet martini. One of the biggest culinary trends of the past 10 years has been the emergence of locally-owned coffee bars that transform into craft cocktail and wine bars come happy hour (and often earlier). These quality shops have created a buzz by providing a little buzz all day long. Here are some local favorites.

PHOTO COURTESY 32 SHEA. OPPOSITE: COURTESY SIP

32 SHEA Operating out of what used to be a 1980s drive-thru photo mat, 32 Shea opened as a dog-friendly neighborhood cafe, restaurant, and bar in 2011. Whimsical inside and out, there is counter service in the morning and day, as well as a drive-thru window for folks on their way to work. Craft coffee drinks are made from local Matador Coffee Roasting Company beans, with the rosemary honey, Nutella, and lavender lattes being crowd favorites. Come lunchtime, wine, beer, and cocktails are added to the menu, along with lunch selections. After 4 p.m., the restaurant transforms into a full-service dinner lounge featuring small plates and entrees complemented by an impressive craft cocktail menu. The cocktails, made using homemade syrups and fresh garnishes, include a crave-worthy espresso martini, mint lemon drop martini,

and smashed blueberry cocktail. Need to relax with your drink? 32 Shea’s dog-friendly patio has a Zen garden and Buddha that add to the atmosphere. 10626 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; www.32shea.com

PROVISION Provision was also founded in 2011 on the concept of connecting coffee drinkers and buyers to the stories of smallholder coffee producers. An Australian-style breakfast restaurant by day and craft cocktail bar by night, with a specialty coffee program available all day, Provision seamlessly melds the coffee bar-cocktail bar concept. Coffee beverages begin with seasonal freshly roasted and brewed coffee, such as nitro, espresso, americano, and honey lavender lattes, with a choice of milk options and flavors. Matcha and sparkling teas are other popular options. And then there are the cocktails. The whimsical creations include a coffee mimosa, espresso martini, and one named Millennial Entitlement, which is Provision’s cheeky take on a paloma. The Provision team also takes considerable pride in offering classic cocktails. 711 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix; www.provisioncoffee.com 21

SIP COFFEE & BEER There are two locations of this locally-owned destination in the Valley—one in Scottsdale and the other in Arcadia—and both are equal parts coffee shop, tap house, cocktail bar, and restaurant. The Scottsdale space opened in 2014 in what looks like a vintage home with an ample patio. The furnishings are courtesy of local antique stores and garage sales, and the vision from day one was to bring people together over drinks and food. Its success led to a second location, retrofitted in what used to be an auto repair garage complete with oil change bays, in 2015. The coffee and morning drink menu offers a cool blend of traditional items and cutting-edge options, including CBDinfused coffee, a bananas foster latte, and a mocha with Chaga mushrooms. When it comes to more spirited offerings, guests love the flight option, which features samplings of a nitro brew, mimosa, bloody Mary, and a beer on one board, as well as the standard and ever-changing seasonal cocktail menu. Of note are the bourbon-infused chai and the sangria that comes in what looks like a Capri Sun vessel. Sip Coffee & Beer House, 3617 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale and Sip Coffee & Beer Garage, 3620 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; www.sipcoffeeandbeer.com

PHOTO COURTESY ZINGARA. OPPOSITE: COURTESY AMELIA'S BY EAT

ZINGARA Enamored by both the approach to hospitality and quality ingredients in Europe, restaurateur Her Ambrosio opened ZINGARA in Scottsdale earlier this summer as a combination coffee shop, bespoke market, and wine bar highlighting the cuisine of Spain, Southern France, and Italy, as well as coffee, European wine, and luxury goods. Upscale and expansive, ZINGARA is feminine by design, both clean and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows. During the morning, ZINGARA partners with Infusion Coffee & Tea Crafters in Tempe to offer both standard cups of joe and espresso-based beverages, including one with pistachio cream. The wine bar shines a light on glasses and bottles from France and Italy, with charcuterie and cheese boards and signature small dishes. Finally, the market is a curated shopping experience offering luxury home goods and daily staples. It also features a grab-and-go area with fresh sandwiches and salads. 11475 N. 136th St., Scottsdale; www.zingaramarket.com

AMELIA’S BY EAT Like ZINGARA, Amelia’s by EAT is new in 2023 and located in Scottsdale. It is also woman-owned, founded by chef Stacey Weber, who also runs EAT in Paradise Valley. The venue is named to honor her grandmother. Visually, the 2,500-square-foot space, which also boasts another 900 square feet on the patio, infuses a modern design with nods to the Sonoran Desert.

ZINGARA

Breakfast, all-day, and dinner menus are available, as well as a build-your-own nosh board option. The specialty coffee drinks are made using organic coffee espresso beans, house-made syrups, and organic milks. Guests can opt for classics or explore a variety of flavor combinations, such as maple with rosemary and orange with cardamom. The scratch-made cocktail menu is even more fun, from slushies that the season's flavors to the green tomatillo bloody Mary. 8240 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.ameliasaz.com

THE STIR COFFEE BAR Aptly named, this coffee shop-turned-speakeasy aims to “stir up” coffee, cocktails, and conversation through connectivity, food and beverages, and an old-school atmosphere. Whether you are craving a cup of joe, an inspired nosh, an over-the-top ice cream delight, a creative cocktail, or a vintage nightcap, you can have it all here. The Stir offers caffeinated concoctions, including both hot and cold boozy brews such as Anatolia Café with coffee, cognac, and cherry liqueur. Beyond the storefront, there is a secondary option inside, as well. Hidden within The Stir is an entrance to Gin and Reel, a speakeasy with an Old Hollywood vibe, where the decor includes vintage projectors and old-school images of red-carpet events that add to the ambiance, director’s chairs in place of barstools, and throwback black-and-white films on rotation. 5415 E. High St., Phoenix; www.thestircoffee.com 23

hen you think of Arizona, the word “garden” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Mountains, cacti, and vistas of desert brown, perhaps, but for most, a garden isn’t top-of-mind. Although they may not be filled with the typical lush landscapes filled with flowers that you might think of when you picture a garden, these locales each offer a way to explore Arizona’s unique landscape and flora, and to find perfect moments of serenity.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN Set on 140 acres—with 55 under cultivation—among the red rocks of Papago Buttes in Phoenix, is the Desert Botanical Garden (DBG), one of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and an Arizona icon for nearly 85 years. Here, visitors can view more than 50,000 desert plants showcased in outdoor exhibits. There are five themed trails to explore. The Sonoran Desert Nature Trail features sweeping mountain views, telescopes, and an organ pipe cactus forest, while the Center For Desert Living Trail showcases fragrant herbs and vegetable beds. On the Desert Discovery Trail (the Garden’s main trail), explore the beauty of the desert and its array of cacti, succulents, and historic plant collections. Meanwhile, stroll along the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail to view a variety of brightly colored blooms (watch out for the pollinators they attract, such as bees, butterflies, and

hummingbirds!). And on the Plants & People Of The Sonoran Desert Trail, wander through five diverse desert habitats and discover the variety of ways indigenous people used native plants for food, shelter, and more. The Garden also hosts a variety of special exhibits and events. This month view the special exhibit Fernando Botero: El Maestro (on view through March 31, 2024), where paintings, drawings, and monumental sculptures celebrating the visionary Colombian artist Fernando Botero are featured in the Garden and in Dorrance Hall. There is also Majestic Mariposas (through Nov. 12), where you can get up-close with more than a thousand Southwestern butterflies. Other events include Music in the Garden (Nov. 3, 10, 17); Día de Muertos (Nov. 4-5); Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Celebration (Nov. 11-12); Dog Days at the Garden (Nov. 18); Lotería Nights (Nov. 15), and Desert Sol (Nov. 18). The iconic holiday display Las Noches de las Luminarias can be viewed Nov. 24-25 (as well as select dates in December). 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix; 480.941.1225; www.dbg.org

JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX In the heart of Phoenix lies an unexpected treasure—a Japanese garden. Named RoHoEn, it is a joint project between the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan. The idea for the 3.5-acre garden was proposed in 1987 as a way to solidify the bonds of friendship between the two countries, as well as the two cities. The destination features a stroll garden, a tea garden, a stone 25

Benches are strategically located throughout the garden, offering places to sit and meditate, contemplate, or read. There are also stone footbridges; lanterns; a koi pond; streams; a waterfall; and more than 50 varieties of plants. The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix offers a monthly authentic tea ceremony (October through June), although this season is already sold out. Tickets are still available for its new tea tours, offered on select Tuesdays. During the docent-led tour, learn the basics of Chanoyu and Japanese casual tea. The tour also includes a tea tasting and education within the tea house and a roji garden tour. 1125 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; 602.274.8700; www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org

5 Unique Locations to Visit There is plenty to see and do in Metro Phoenix. Here are five unique locations that should make your must-see list. MICHELLE GLICKSMAN 1. HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK

This unique natural geological formation is, well, a giant hole in a rock—more specifically, a natural opening in a red rock butte. Located in Papago Park in Phoenix, it’s just a .3-mile out-and-back trail from the parking lot to the formation, which offers a well-framed view of the city. 625 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix; www.phoenix.gov

2. FIREFLIES INFINITY MIRROR ROOM

This popular attraction at Phoenix Art Museum features artist Yayoi Kusama’s installation You Who Are Getting Obliterated in

48 ARRIVED_PHOENIX+SCOTTSDALE

the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies. Kusama’s repetitive and extensive use of polka dots, mirrors, and LED lights makes you feel infinitely surrounded by fireflies, and encourages you to “obliterate’” your personality and become one with eternity. 1625 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; www.phxart.org

3. MYSTERY CASTLE

Built by Boyce Gully for his daughter as an homage to the sand castles they had built on a beach in Seattle, this locale, made of native stones, has 18 rooms, 13 fireplaces, parapets, and many nooks and crannies. Gully died in 1945

before his daughter could see his creation, though she later moved in as an adult. Today, visitors are lucky to be able to tour the unique destination. 800 E. Mineral Road, Phoenix; www.mymysterycastle.com

4. THE BAT CAVE

Each summer, several thousand Mexican free-tailed bats and canyon bats make their home in the Maricopa County Flood Control Tunnel. They usually emerge to eat just before sunset between June and August—but can sometimes be seen from March to October. You can catch the evening spectacle of them flying around,

just make sure not to touch them. From the 40th Street/Camelback Road intersection, find the tunnel on the north side of the Arizona Canal; www.azgfd.com

5. ANTHEM VETERANS MEMORIAL

Honor the country’s veterans at this unique memorial, which is located at the community park in Anthem and honors the service and sacrifice of the country’s armed forces. At precisely 11:11 a.m. on Veterans Day (Nov. 11), the sun’s rays will pass through the ellipses of the five pillars memorial (the pillars represent the unity of the five branches of the United States military serving steadfastly together) to form a solar spotlight over the mosaic of the Great Seal of the United States. 41703 N. Gavilan Peak Pkwy., Anthem; www.onlineatanthem.com
