Play Time
Get ready to dine and play at Backyard, which opens its second locale in the Valley the first week of this month in Gilbert (the first is at Desert Ridge Marketplace in Phoenix).
Backyard takes “indoor/outdoor” to the next level with walls that open to the outdoors. The menu ranges from the Backyard Nachos to a variety of smashburgers and flatbreads, and signature items like the homemade meatloaf and turkey pot pie. Craft beers, curated cocktails, and wine highlight the drink menu.
But while the food and drink is a highlight, at the heart
of this experience is entertainment. There are 18’ x 10’ LED screens that can showcase multiple games simultaneously, complemented by a state-of-the-art sound and light system, a built-in stage for live music, and interactive games like Pop-a-Shot and cornhole.
At night, the space becomes a high-energy bar scene complete with live DJs.

NEW CELEBRITY LEADERSHIP
While he’s still helming Scottsdale’s Cala restaurant at Senna House, Food Network favorite and popular local chef Beau MacMillan also recently took over The Americano in Scottsdale from fellow celebrity chef (and also Scottsdale local) Scott Conant.
For those who were prior fans of the locale, don’t worry— the restaurant remains true to its original concept as a modern Italian-inspired steakhouse, with fine steaks, fresh pastas,
organic salas, Italian antipasti, Mediterranean seafoods, inventive cocktails, and an extensive wine list.
MacMillan has also been busy with the launch of the underground craft cocktail and live music lounge Tell Your Friends, which is located under The Americano. To enter, look for the door on the side of the building.

Mother Knows Best
Brand new—it opened on Labor Day—destination Mother Trucker’s Tavern brings dive bar-style fun with a vintage vibe to Downtown Scottsdale’s Entertainment District. Of course, in true Scottsdale fashion, this isn’t your typical “dive bar.”
Mother Tucker’s pairs cozy-chic party pub decor (think eclectic seating, antique wallpaper, and beer can walls, all under flickering vintage neon) with a focused food and drink menu featuring elevated bar snacks, craft beers, and retro-modern
cocktails. Early favorites include a Snake River Farms American wagyu beef hot dog, with caramelized onions, pepper relish, dill pickle, and stone ground mustard. Plus, look for fun presentations such as a 40-ounce bottle of Miller High Life, accompanied with 50 ml bottles of popular shots like Don Julio 1942.
Pre-game, catch a game, or just hang out. Also the official home for University of Michigan football.

From places to plane spot to airport museums to visit to where to see a variety of aircraft, there are plenty of ways for your day to take flight (with your feet planted on the ground, of course). Here are some destinations to check out.
VIEW TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS
Like plane spotting? There are lots of places around the Valley perfect for this.
If you want to enjoy a meal while taking in the takeoffs and landings, head to Volanti Scottsdale Airport, located on the second floor of Scottsdale Airport. The restaurant has both indoor and patio seating, and is open for lunch, happy hour, dinner, and weekend brunch. While you dine on options ranging from the Farmers Market Salad to the Shrimp Tower to filet mignon—or the Hundred Dollar Hamburger that features caviar aioli and Vueve 375—you can watch the happenings on the runway. The restaurant is located in the business center that overlooks the airport, so there is no need to go through security. It’s also just a short six minute walk from popular shopping destination Scottsdale Quarter. Volanti also offers helicopter tours if you’d like a view from above. 15000 N. Airport Drive, Scottsdale; www.volantiscottsdale.com
There is also an observation deck at Scottsdale Airport. For Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, one of the most popular spots to watch planes take off and land is on level nine of the Terminal 4 parking garage. If you enjoy watching military airplanes, you can park near Luke Air Force Base (the base is surrounded by a fence and security) and watch them fly overhead. For a comprehensive list of where to plane spot around the Valley, visit www.spotterguide.net

is Pima Air & Space Museum. One of the largest aerospace museums in the world, you can view more than 400 historic aircraft and 125,000 artifacts. The property encompasses six hangars, 80 acres outdoors, and its very own restoration facility, where projects range from repainting to refurbishing some of the rarest aircraft in the world. Pima’s collection includes international examples of flight from every era in civil, commercial, military, and experimental aviation. 6000 E. Valencia Road, Tucson, 520.574.0462; www.pimaair.org
VIEW EXHIBITIONS AT THE AIRPORT
In 1988, a small exhibition of local children’s art was the precursor to what is now one of the largest airport art programs in the nation. Today, the Phoenix Airport Museum delights nearly 49 million passengers annually through its extensive changing exhibition program, diverse art collection, and aviation history program. Whether you are traveling or not, make Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport a destination to view local art and aviation history. The artwork is displayed in exhibitions throughout the airport, promoting Arizona’s unique artistic and cultural heritage through art and aviation collections and an exhibition program. There is also a gallery and aviation history exhibits in both terminals. For a list of current exhibits and locations, visit www.skyharbor.com/ at-the-airport/amenities/airport-museum. 3400 Sky Harbor Blvd., Phoenix
VISIT A COMBAT AVIATION MUSEUM
The Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa is the only combat aviation museum in the Valley. Here, take an edu-venture through history, learning how aircraft evolved as a vital partner to ground and sea operations from WWI to present. There’s a working hangar to tour, bombers and cargo planes to climb aboard, and you can even book a flight in an authentic warbird. Open Wed.-Sat. only. 2017 N. Greenfield Road, Mesa; www.azcaf.org

During Prohibition, hundreds of hidden bars popped up nationwide. These secret spots would be nicknamed speakeasies because they required guests to “speak easy”—or quietly— about them. And while Prohibition is long gone, hidden speakeasy-style haunts continue to be popular, especially in the Valley. Here, ones to put on your radar.
[ The Peacock ]
Tucked behind a hidden door in the Living Room Wine Café & Lounge at DC Ranch, The Peacock is over-the-top with luxurious peacock feathers, exquisite wallpaper, and bookshelves filled with vintage tomes in all directions. Live music elevates the ambiance every Thursday night, perfectly complementing the retro vibe, and the menu blends modern and classic cocktails in perfect harmony. 20751 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; www.peacockdcranch.com
[ Tell Your Friends ]
Tell Your Friends is an underground experience hidden beneath The Americano restaurant in Scottsdale. It is accessible via a nondescript door on the side of The Americano, but upon descending down the staircase, prepare to be enveloped by a sea of unique visual displays, starting with floral designs on the walls, floor, and ceiling. Once downstairs, there are disco ball art installations, mirrored walls, and vivid red velvet drapery—not to mention massive gold structures that extend across the ceiling. The food menu was designed by acclaimed chef Beau MacMillan, and the cocktail menu by Keifer Gilbert, who is among the Valley’s most lauded mixologists. 17797 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.tellyourfriendsaz.com
[ Pigtails ]
In 2018, the Whining Pig—previously a small beer/wine bar with locations in more urban neighborhoods—opened a massive
location at Desert Ridge. Why so much space? Because there is a secret inside. After passing the main bar and heading down a dark hallway, a wholly separate experience awaits in Pigtails, an immersive cocktail lounge complete with traditional and exotic drink options made using barrel-aged whiskies, house-infused spirits, and scented mists. Its success soon led to the opening of other locations in the Valley. 21001 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; 201 E. Washington St., Phoenix; 2512 S. Val Vista Drive, Gilbert; 5030 E. Ray Road, Phoenix; www.thewhiningpig.com
[ The Ostrich ]
Located in the basement of Chandler’s Crust, this speakeasy-style cocktail bar gives you the chance to channel your inner Gatsby, with an Arizona twist. The Ostrich Bar is inspired by the rich history of the city of Chandler, which dates back to the founding days of 1912. Cocktails harken back to Prohibition, with small twists that weave past and present seamlessly in the glass. 10 N. San Marcos Place, Chandler; www.theostrichbar.com
[ The Goose ]
This is another concept from Crust. Based on The Ostrich’s success, earlier this year, Crust debuted this lounge adjacent to its location in Scottsdale’s Mercado Del Lago shopping center. As with The Ostrich, The Goose has a bird theme.
Tell Your FriendsThe Goose
Quartz
Visually, expect artistic takes on the migrating waterfowl throughout the space. The concept extends to the menu, with all of the signature cocktails a play on something connected to either the literal animal or to terms that use the word “goose.” 8300 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.thegooseaz.com
[ Wander ]
Earlier this year, North Phoenix’s Chateau Luxe opened Wander. Hidden within the sprawling venue, Wander takes inspiration from the most important historic and cultural places across the globe, including the Wonders of the World. The go-big-or-go-home offerings include the Globe, which is made with Japanese, Indian, and Canadian whiskeys, and the Colosseum, which is served with a replica Roman Empire helmet. 1175 E. Lone Cactus Drive, Phoenix; www.wanderspeakeasy.com
[ Century Grand ]
From the outside, Arcadia’s Century Grand is a large brick building that could easily be confused with a post office.
So what is inside? After checking in at the front, you are led to one of three experiences—Platform 18, a replica turn-of-the-century train car nestled into the north side of the building that utilizes visual affects to make you feel as if you are really chugging along; Grey Hen, a reimagining of a 1920s apothecary on the east side of the building, with mixologists who can “prescribe” drinks; and UnderTow, a wholly separate experience on the south side of the building that transports you into the mysterious Yucatán Peninsula circa 1560. 3626 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; www.centurygrandphx.com
[ Gin & Reel ]
Desert Ridge’s The Stir Coffee Bar boasts fabulous coffee and cocktails, as well as ice cream. It also boasts one of the sneakybest speakeasies in the Valley in Gin & Reel. Accessible via a secret entrance (hint: look for the payphone!), you must know the secret word to enter. Thankfully, the ever-changing word is always hidden in plain sight in the main dining area. Once inside, Gin & Reel is a dazzling homage to Old Hollywood, complete with
vintage projectors, images of red carpet, director’s chairs in place of barstools, and throwback black-and-white films on rotation. 5415 E. High St., Phoenix; www.thestircoffeebar.com
[ The Cave ]
Quartz opened just last year in Downtown Phoenix, featuring gemstone-themed cocktails. While that space is impressive all on its own, hidden behind the main bar space is a secret doorway. Those who sneak through will find The Cave. This “gem” inside of Quartz features rose-gold mirrors from floor to ceiling and features a menu inspired by deserts around the world. Every single cocktail tells a desert story through flavor and offers some sort of whimsical sensory experience for the guest. 341 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix; www.quartzphx.com
[ The Madam ]
When The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, a Curio Collection Resort by Hilton, debuted its $40 million property-wide renovation earlier this year, it had a few tricks up its sleeve. Among the
biggest? A new speakeasy called The Madam hidden above the lobby floor. Inspired by the 1920s, the ultra-intimate space is only accessible to those with the secret password. To find it, explore the brand’s social media or connect with the staff while on property. Once you know it, make your way up a staircase to a hidden room of wonder. 7700 E. McCormick Pkwy., Scottsdale; www.thescottsdaleresort.com
[ Poppy’s Office ]
Paul Keeler, often called Poppy, was a giant in the Arizona culinary scene, most recently known for his Liberty Station American Tavern and Smokehouse restaurants, as well as Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse. When he passed away in 2021, his family honored him by creating Poppy’s Office. Tucked in near Liberty Station Terravita, the speakeasy-style cocktail bar is a near replica of Keeler’s private office, complete with personal mementos, family portraits, and memorabilia of Keeler’s favorite teams. 34422 N. THINGS TO DO
IN THE VALLEY
Chicken, Six Diffeent Ways
BYALISONBAILINBATZ
Thanks in great part to the on-going cheeky “battle” between Popeye’s and Chick-fil-A over who has the best chicken sandwich in America, chicken dishes of all kinds are trending nationwide. Here are six diverse, delicious dishes showcasing the many ways the versatile protein is prepared across the Valley.
1. FOOL’S GOLD
Locally owned Sneakybird—now with three locations—boasts a specially designed oven and unique breading recipe blending panko flatbread and aged Parmesan that together combine to give oven-grilled chicken the crunch and flavor of fried chicken sans the guilt. The chicken is nestled between a brioche bun and paired with pickles, lettuce, tomato, and Fool’s Gold sauce, a proprietary combination of golden mustard and smokey barbecue sauce. $10.95 and up. Locations in Scottsdale, Gilbert, Phoenix, and Surprise; www.sneakybird.com
2. ORANGE PEEL CHICKEN
Among the most beloved dishes on the menu since its opening, the version of orange chicken at Ling & Louie’s is glutenfree, yet perfectly crispy. Once cooked, it is wok’d with a sweet, spicy, savory sauce made using oranges, gluten-free flour, and soy sauce. Once the chicken is lathered in the sauce, it is served with crispy spinach and a side of rice. $16. 9397 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale and 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Phoenix; www.lingandlouies.com
3. CHICKEN PESTO
Creamy and dreamy beyond one’s wildest imagination, this modern Italian menu marvel tosses tender pieces of chicken with pesto that’s made fresh daily using basil leaves, pine nuts, Parmesan, garlic, and olive oil before they are cooked. They are then tossed again with warmed basil and spooned into a bowl before being paired with toasted pine nuts, garlic, basil, crispy capers, and a sprinkle of shaved Parmesan cheese. $22. Locations in Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Phoenix; www.northitalia.com
4. CHICKEN KHAO SOI
An ultra-flavorful noodle soup native to Northern Thailand and Laos, the name itself means cut or sliced rice because it is often made using steamed rice or egg noodles that are rolled out and physically cut. At Kembara, crispy house-made egg noodles pair with ample chicken, cardamom, turmeric, coconut milk, and other spices to create a unique take on a chicken curry. $29. 5350 E. Marriott Drive, Phoenix; www.kembaradesertridge.com
5. CRISPY CHICKEN SAMMIE
The most popular item on Ingo’s Tasty Food’s menu since its inception, the sammie is made from juicy, all-natural chicken breast, which is lightly coated with breading and herbs and fried until golden brown before being nestled into a sesame seed bun with tangy dill pickles, green apple slices, and house-made sriracha aioli. $12. Locations in Scottsdale and Phoenix; www.ingostastyfood.com
6. CHICKEN & WAFFLE
Showcased on the popular TLC show Best Food Ever, this dish is a twist on the classic comfort food favorite. Inspired by the Southern preparation and equally sweet, spicy, and savory, it features three fried boneless chicken tenders that are tossed in a blend of Cholula and maple syrup. The chicken is then laid atop a large, malted waffle t hat has been perfectly toasted for a soft and crunchy bite. $16.95. Locations Valleywide; www.eatatovereasy.com 2 1
