A Unique Museum
The Museum of Illusions opened last month in the Arizona Boardwalk destination in Scottsdale. Here, you can walk on walls in the Rotated Room, defy gravity in the Tilted Room, and appear to grow and shrink in the Ames Room. There are more than 60 exhibits at this latest installment of the museum, which has 35 locations worldwide. Via holograms, stereograms, and optical illusions, learn about vision, perception, and the human brain, as well as experience firsthand the science of how the eyes can trick the mind. Exhibits range from classics to the never-before-seen. “While our museum certainly is visually engaging and has those photoworthy moments, it is about so much more,” says Stacy Stec, director of sales and marketing for LOL Entertainment, the parent company of Museum of Illusions Scottsdale. “We’ve carefully and thoughtfully designed this museum to provide an educational experience that will leave guests feeling inspired long after they leave. We can’t wait to challenge minds and provide a hands-on, immersive experience for all ages.” Arizona Boardwalk, 9500 E. Via de Ventura, Scottsdale; www.moiscottsdale.com

Explore these unique destinations, where landscapes delight and serenity abounds BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

hen you think of Arizona, the word “garden” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Mountains, cacti, and vistas of desert brown, perhaps, but for most, garden isn’t top-of-mind. Although they may not be filled with the typical lush landscapes with flowers that you might think of when you picture a garden, these public locales each offer a way to explore a unique landscape and flora, and to find perfect moments of serenity.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN
Set on 140 acres–with 55 under cultivation–amongst the red rocks of Papago Buttes in Phoenix, is Desert Botanical Garden (DBG), one of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and an Arizona icon for nearly 85 years. Here, you can view more than 50,000 desert plants showcased in outdoor exhibits. There are five themed trails to explore. The Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail features sweeping mountain views, telescopes, and an organ pipe cactus forest, while the Center

for Desert Living Trail showcases fragrant herbs and vegetable beds. On the Discovery Loop Trail (the Garden’s main trail), explore the beauty of the desert and its array of cacti, succulents, and historic plant collections, and learn about how desert plants from around the world have adapted to the environment. Along the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail, view a variety of brightly colored blooms (and watch out for the pollinators they attract, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!). And on the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop Trail, wander through five diverse desert habitats and discover the variety of ways Indigenous people used native plants for food, shelter, and more. The Garden also hosts a variety of special exhibits and events. This month, view Playing With Stars: Rotraut at Desert Botanical Garden, where the bold and lyrical large-scale sculptures of Rotraut are featured on various Garden trails, and a selection of her paintings and small sculptures are displayed in the Ottosen Gallery. There is also Majestic Mariposas, where you can get up-close with more than 2,000 native Southwestern butterflies. Other events include Music in the Garden 2023 (April 7, 14, 28); Dog Days at the Garden (April 1, 8, 15, and 29); Lotería Nights 2023 (April 13), and Desert Sol 2023 (April 15). 1201 N. JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX
In the heart of Phoenix lies an unexpected treasure—a Japanese garden. Named RoHoEn, it is a joint project between the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan. The idea for this 3.5-acre garden was proposed in 1987 as a way to solidify the bonds of friendship between the two countries, as well as the two cities. The destination features a stroll garden, tea garden, a stone garden, and a courtyard garden. The stroll path is a loop that takes visitors through four different regions, hidden in a “hide and reveal” aspect that is typical of Japanese gardens. Benches are strategically located throughout. There are also stone footbridges, lanterns, a koi pond, streams, a waterfall, and more than 50 varieties of plants. The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix offers a monthly authentic tea ceremony (October through June), although this season is already sold out. 1125 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; 602.274.8700; www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org

In the heart of Carefree is a 4-acre botanical garden, the only other public botanical garden in Metro Phoenix besides Desert Botanical Garden. Situated amongst the pedestrian-friendly Easy Street, it is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The locale is free to access, and features rare desert plant specimens along a self-guided walking path. The locale is also host to the Carefree Sundial, the largest sundial in the United States, and the third-largest in the world. Completed in 1959 and designed by architect Joe Wong and solar engineer John Yellott, it extends 72 feet, is 90 feet in diameter, and points to the north star. Other features include a children’s playground, a splash park, and a pavilion for events. 101 Easy St., Carefree

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Race in at go kart at Octane Raceway, float in the air at indoor skydiving locale iFly, or take a helicopter tour with Western Sky Helicopters.
Another way to see the Valley from high above it is via a helicopter tour. Get a bird’s-eye view with SunState Helicopter Tours (www. sunstateheli.com), which offers tour options including a brunch and tour, dinner and tour, desert landscape tour, sunset or sunrise tour, and more, which all leave from SunState’s hangar in Scottsdale. Western Sky Helicopters (www.westernskyhelicopters.com) also offers tours that fly from a hangar in Scottsdale. Choose from one that flies over the Valley and Downtown Phoenix, or explore the nearby mountains and lakes. Another option is the Sunset Tour, while the final option showcases the twinkling lights of the Valley as it spreads out below in the evening.
EXPERIENCE SKYDIVING— FROM UP HIGH OR DOWN LOW
If you’ve always craved the feel of the rush of wind as you jump from a plane high up in the air, take a short drive from Metro Phoenix to Eloy to Skydive Arizona (www.skydiveaz.com) for a tandem jump. It’s not just for tandem jumps though—those who are experienced can also skydive here, and for those who want to earn a skydiving license, that’s available, too. And, the locale offers
an indoor skydiving option for those who prefer the adrenaline rush of the experience, without the height. If an indoor experience is all you’re looking for, there’s one in Scottsdale, as well. iFly (www.iflyworld.com) indoor skydiving offers the perfect option—it’s the thrill of the experience, but in a short indoor wind tunnel on a cushion of controlled air. An instructor is on hand to guide the experience.
TOUR THE VALLEY ON A SEGWAY OR E-BIKE
Ditch the walking tour, don a helmet, and get ready to glide or ride around the Valley with a tour from Segway of Scottsdale (www. segwayofscottsdale.com). A quick training and you’ll be off, with a tour guide leading the way. Learn about the area (the guide speaks to participants via a mic and earpiece system) while touring Old Town Scottsdale (Segway), Scottsdale & McCormick Ranch (e-bike), Sunsets & City Lights (Segway), or Hole in the Rock & Tempe Town Lake (e-bike). With Greenbelt Bike Tours (www.greenbeltbiketours.com), choose an e-bike tour in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, or Queen Creek.
