Top-Notch Dining
The Valley is known as a culinary destination, with a plethora of James Beard Award-winning chefs, celebrated television chefs, and up-and-coming culinary stars, as well as impressive mom-and-pop locales—so it’s no wonder that three Valley eateries recently took home another round of awards. Ocean 44, Dominick’s Steakhouse, and Steak 44 were all named to OpenTable’s Top 100 Restaurants for 2022. The list was generated from diner reviews collected over the course of a year. And, Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion nabbed one of the highest possible scores (18/20) from Gayot, an international guide to travel, food, hotels, shopping, and attractions. It was also named to four Gayot lists—including Best French Restaurants in the U.S.A. and Best Romantic Restaurants in the U.S.A. Ocean 44: 4748 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale; www.ocean44.com. WELCOME TO EDEN
EDEN ROOFTOP BAR
The popular LUSTRE Rooftop Bar at Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix is no more. Instead, the Downtown locale was reimagined as Eden Rooftop Bar and relaunched late last month—and it is already becoming a mainstay destination in which to sip, savor, and socialize, with innovative food and beverage menus complemented by experiential design and programming. Eden’s design was inspired by Arizona’s treasured desert gardens and textures, and features plantings that thoughtfully complement its spacious bar, signature rooftop pool experience, and vibe-driven lounge. The food showcases Mediterranean flavors fused with elements of coastal cuisine, while the cocktails are made with unique ingredients and house-made syrups. We suggest trying the Garden of Eden, a blend of serrano and cilantro-infused tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, and Italicus, and the Desert Sunset, prepared with locally sourced Arizona Distilling Company commerce gin, gran ponche, pistachio orgeat, lemon juice, and egg white. The Ride Continues State staple restaurant Buck & Rider, known for its superior ingredients and commitment to flying in the freshest seafood from around the world daily, recently opened its highly anticipated second location. Located in The Shops at Chauncey Ranch, the new 10,000-square-foot restaurant—twice the size of the original Phoenix location—was inspired by the old seafood canaries on the West and East coasts. The new destination features an indoor space, 10-seat sushi bar, and two patios that bridge the indoor and outdoor connection. Watch your favorite Buck & Rider signature dishes being prepared in the open chef’s kitchen, and look out for your favorite daily market catch and thoughtfully sourced seafood to be featured on the rotating split flat board. The raw bar is also time-stamped and continuously updated to reflect the best fish and oyster selections flown in from around the world. Buck & Rider is also known for its iconic happy hour. 7015 E. BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ h, February. The month when the chilliest time of the year
gives way to the most amorous. If you’re seeking somewhere to toast that special someone and make it count, consider one of these ultra-romantic restaurants, each designed to wine and dine at the highest of levels.
QUIESSENCE
Quiessence is an outdoor oasis located at The Farm at South Mountain. The only thing that shines brighter than the sparkling lights strung from above along the mature, majestic trees is the menu. Executive chef Dustin Christofolo is a wizard of whimsey and flavor, plating each perfectly portioned dish on his prix fixe menus with precision, care, and a creative eye. Dinner here feels like a dream, but it is real … and really special. 6106 S. 32nd St., Phoenix; www.thefarmatsouthmountain.com

LON’S AT THE HERMOSA INN
Patio dining is a way of life in the Valley. However, sunshine alone cannot a good patio make. Setting the standard for romantic outdoor dining in Arizona for decades, the often duplicated but never replicated patio at LON’s at The Hermosa Inn is nestled into a resplendent garden, and offers breathtaking vistas of the desert and Camelback Mountain. The space itself boasts five massive woodburning fireplaces, plush couches, scattered dining tables, and trickling water features to add to the sense of place. While others come and go, LON’s continues to be a perfect gathering place for special occasions. 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley; www.lons.com
SEL
This intimate dining experience offers progressive American cuisine by candlelight from acclaimed chef Branden Levine. There is an a la carte menu, as well as traditional and vegetarian prix fixe menus. Offerings change regularly, but consistently deliver big, bold flavors. Those seeking a more adventurous date night are in luck, as the menu may include anything from Kaluga caviar and roasted bone marrow to seared Hudson Valley foie gras and Peruvian ceviche. 7044 E. TALAVERA
The Forbes Four-Star Award-winning Talavera, which boasts floorto-ceiling windows, as well as a dramatic fire feature that lines a wall of the restaurant, is located at the sophisticated Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. The Spanish-influenced menus, featuring Paella, Jamón Ibérico, and a laundry list of globally inspired tapas, are quickly becoming the stuff of legend. Insider tip: Within Talavera there is also a small cocktail spot called Gin Bar that specializes in gin tonics, which are far more aromatic and botanically forward than traditional gin and tonics. SHEPARD FAIREY: BUILDINGS AND BLOCKS
S
hepard Fairey: Buildings and Blocks is American Fine Art’s exciting exhibit opening to the public February 2nd, 2023. The exhibit highlights the works of internationally renowned street artist Shepard Fairey with his decades of graffiti, street art, and murals. He was born in South Carolina in 1970, Shepard Fairey attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration in 1992. By graduation, Fairey had already made a name for himself by designing the infamous Andre the Giant OBEY sticker. From there, he continued to influence and be influenced by the burgeoning skateboard and street art
communities. These influences can still be felt in Shepard Fairey’s work today. Shepard Fairey's Street art adorns the walls of cities around the world, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Johannesburg, Berlin, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, but the very nature of it is that it is temporary. While posters and prints survive, his murals often disappear. He noted that: "I've been in street art 30 years. Most of my pieces don't last that long. As an artist you have to be comfortable with enjoying the process and not being precious about the product. I am always happy when something lasts but it's a world of many transgressions, the least of which is someone writing over my mural. People will tag me or write over my mural because they think I am too mainstream now, that I'm a sellout, or they know that my work will be photographed, and it will get them attention. I consider myself an ally with all the other people doing things on the street.” “I think that art has the ability to capture people's imaginations and make them think that more is possible.”—Shepard Fairey Fairey has become one of the most influential street artists working today and has been dubbed "A Giant in this generation’s street art".
40
He was the subject of James Moll's film Obey Giant, has appeared in Banksy’s film Exit Through the Gift Shop and took on a guest role in the Simpsons episode Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart. In 2019 a retrospective of Fairey's work, Facing the Giant: 3 Decades of Dissent, opened in the Los Angeles' Arts District. He has influenced a new generation of Public and Street Artists. An unintended consequence of Fairey's work is that it has boosted property prices; an apartment in Costa Mesa, California sold for more than double average value in 2019 thanks to an enormous Fairey mural on its side. Fairey has designed multiple pieces of album art for the Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, and Flogging Molly. Graffiti and street art has very much entered the gallery arena and the museum space, and you can see that postmodern intertwined with the contemporary art world and those subject areas, you can go all the way back to early Keith Haring, Crash, Basquiat, Blek Le Rat, and Cornbread that really paved that way.
Being controversial and almost raging against the machine makes him a hero and an easy target. Anarchists and the masses support the defiant attitude and serve as a large part of the poster success that Fairey has enjoyed. His murals speak for themselves they are extraordinary and make the statement of a true stencil and graffiti artist, bold, loud, and free for the world to see. American Fine Art, Inc. is proud to feature the original works and limited editions of Fairey, Cornbread, Haring, Warhol, AtZ, Blek Le Rat, Bambi, Banksy, MBW, Crash, and Dotmaster. IN THE VALLEY

Sip & Savor
Raise a glass to some of the best cocktails available in the Valley this month. Cheers! 1 SMOKEY TOKI
A riff on the classic Brooklyn cocktail (which itself is a distant relative to the classic Manhattan), the Smokey Toki combines Suntory Toki Japanese Whisky with Carpano Bianco Vermouth, China-China Amer, and a dash of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur for an invigorating and complex cocktail. It is smoked tableside with fragrant cherry wood to pronounce the whisky and bring out the sweetness of the other ingredients. $16 at Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill, 9397 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale and 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler; www.lingandlouies.com

2 LYCHEE MARGARITA
This punchy, refreshing Japanese spin on a classic margarita includes Lunazul Blanco, Domaine de Canton, lychee, and lime. The lychee, a popular fruit in Southeast Asia, offers the perfect balance of floral, sweetness, and acidity with the texture of a pear. Combined with the ginger taste of the Domaine de Canton, it's equal parts sweet, spicy, and fruity. $10 at Sake Haus, 214 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix; www.sakehaus.net
3 THE SICILIANO
A bourbon lover's dream cocktail, The Siciliano is a perfect
P HOE NIX +S COTTS DA LE
combination of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, orange bitters, amaro, and Faretti Biscotti. Enjoy this show-stopping cocktail tableside, where a white oak plank and a handheld blowtorch are used to create the smoky flavor and aroma with the glass sealing against the plank. The bourbon drink is served over an ice cube stamped with The Sicilian Butcher's logo. $14 at The Sicilian Butcher, locations in Phoenix, Peoria, and Chandler; www.thesicilianbutcher.com
4 IN THE BUFF
A riff on a classic cocktail, this drink, made of Clarified Dos Hombres, Yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, and lime, is clarified to create a silky, smooth, and light finish. The smokiness of the mescal is balanced out by the Aperol and Yellow Chartreuse. $16 at Prime, A Shula’s Steak House
at Gila River Resorts & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass, 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler; www.playatgila.com
5 TROPIC LIKE IT’S HOT MARGARITA
This tequila-based cocktail arrives at your table on fire. Shaken up with 1800 Coconut Tequila, Elderflower Liqueur, spicy jalapeños, and freshly squeezed lime, it’s served with a flame to add an extra element of heat. $13 at Diego Pops, 4338 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.diegopops.com
6 HUCKLEBERRY MARGARITA
This signature Roaring Fork cocktail features a classic frozen margarita mixed with a house-made huckleberry swirl for a fun twist. $7 (during happy hour) at Roaring Fork, 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.roaringfork.com
