If you keep your eyes peeled, there are plenty of works of art on view for free around Metro Phoenix. In Downtown Scottsdale, find Soleri Bridge and Plaza (4420 N. Scottsdale Road; www. scottsdalepublicart.org), designed by Paolo Soleri. This pedestrian bridge and gathering spot is also a solar calendar. A 6-inch gap between the work’s two 64-foot pylons allows a space for the sun to create a shadow each day at noon. On the summer solstice, no shadow is cast, and on the winter solstice, the longest is cast. Downtown Phoenix is the home of Her Secret is Patience (24 N. Central Ave.) by artist Janet Echelman, which is made of flexible polyester netting suspended 38 feet above the ground at Civic Space Park. Echelman was inspired by Arizona’s distinctive monsoon cloud formations, saguaro flowers, and saguaro boots (which form inside a cactus). The sculpture was designed to billow and ripple in the wind, reflecting the iridescent beauty of Southwestern light. If you find yourself in Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood, look for Waterworks at Arizona Falls (5802 E. Indian School Road). Created by artists Mags Harries and Lajos Heder, the design of this restored hydroelectric plant on the Arizona Canal exposed the gears and floors of the site’s former hydroelectric plant generator room and framed an outdoor “room” with coolness and the sound of water by diverting small flows of canal water to create a pair of waterfalls. There’s also a footbridge and viewing platform.

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction Coming off the most successful year in the auction company’s 50-plus year history, Barrett-Jackson returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale for its annual Scottsdale Auction, Jan. 21-29, with more than 1,800 collector cars crossing the auction block with No Reserve. Some of the automobiles available include a 1966 Shelby Group II Mustang, built for Ken Miles (though sadly, Miles died in a crash while this vehicle was still being built); a 1970 Plymouth HEMI Superbird in Lemon Twist Bright Yellow and one of just 77 built with an automatic transmission; a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (original new price $452,989), which is one of the 644 examples sold new in the U.S. during the entire 2004-2006 production run; and a 2020 Ford GT Carbon Series. Barrett-Jackson is also more than just an auction—it’s an automotive lifestyle event. Attendees can shop in the exhibitor marketplace; explore displays and unveils from leading automotive manufacturers in the sponsor pavilion; take hot laps and thrill rides on the Barrett-Jackson Performance Track with Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, and Dodge; enjoy off-road experiences with RAM and

Toyota; learn at one of the collector car symposiums; listen to music from the live music stage; stop by the cigar lounge; and explore dozens of food and beverage options. The event kicks off its first day (Jan. 21) with Family Day, where children 12 and under have free admission. That day will also feature STEM Fest, with dozens of interactive and educational exhibits for STEM learning. Arizona Concours d’Elegance Approximately 100 of the world’s rarest and most valuable collector cars from all eras were invited to the Arizona Concours d’Elegance to be considered for judging and exhibition. The event is held on Jan. 22 in the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center in Downtown Scottsdale. This is the first year it will be held in this location—it was previously held at the Arizona Biltmore resort—and the first year there is a partnership with Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). A nonprofit event, it will support the arts and local artists. Judges from the United States, Canada, and Europe participate, determining winners in a number of classes and the coveted Best of Show. One vehicle of note that will be showcased is a 1935 Jaguar SS-90 prototype, which served as the factory's first competition car. Hole-in-the-Rock Trail and Double Butte Loop Those seeking an easier hike with great scenery can head to Phoenix’s Papago Park and take the Double Butte Loop (2.3-mile loop), which begins in the West Park Parking Lot, and enjoy the red sandstone formations. On the park’s east side, a quick climb takes you to Hole-in-the-Rock (825 feet out and back)—literally, a giant hole in the mountain that frames a stunning view of the Valley.

Pinnacle Peak Park Trail In North Scottsdale, Pinnacle Peak Park Trail—located in Pinnacle Peak Park—offers a relatively easy climb that’s 1.75 miles each way, and offers views of the Valley and the nearby golf courses and large homes.

Tom’s Thumb and Gateway Loop Trail There are also plenty of trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale. One favorite with both locals and visitors is Tom’s Thumb. A moderately difficult hike, the trail’s signature formation is a pile of boulders that resemble, yes, a thumb. Also part of the preserve is the Gateway Loop Trail, a 4.5-mile trail that only gains 655 feet in elevation.

Scenic Trail In McDowell Mountain Regional Park near the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the Scenic Trail is a nice, relatively level trail with a variety of scenery to capture your attention—making it perfect for families. The full trail is 7 miles though, so it may be too much for younger children.

Hidden Valley Trail via Mormon Trail Ready for tunnels, dry waterfalls, and fantastic city views? If so, try this 3.6-mile loop at South Mountain Preserve. The first mile is often considered the most challenging—and the trail requires hikers to squeeze through an area called Fat Man’s Pass.

Piestewa Peak

If you're looking for more of a challenge, try climbing Phoenix’s Piestewa Peak. It rises 2,610 feet, making it the second-highest point in the Phoenix Mountains. Located in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, this 2.1-mile out-and-back trail is a difficult, steep hike. The reward? Stunning 360-degree views of Metro Phoenix.

Camelback Mountain Of course, for those looking for the most iconic of hikes, that would be Camelback Mountain (named for its resemblance to a reclining camel). There are two trails—the Echo Canyon Trail and the Cholla Trail—to get to the summit, which is the highest in the Valley. Both trails are difficult but for those who make it to the top, the 360-degree views are breathtaking. n an age of constant change, Marc Chagall’s single vision was a breath of fresh air. For all the styles and movements, rarely does a single artist defy comparison, fit no mold, and standalone like Marc Chagall. Almost every work of art created b y the hand of Chagall reads like poetry. All elements infused into his paintings complement one another to create harmonious, lyrical, and balanced compositions. He worked in practically every medium; he made paintings, illustrations, etchings, glass-work, ceramics, tapestries, and more. Chagall’s artworks, regardless of the media, are filled with the everlasting essence of life. He was both a pioneer of modern art and a major figure in Jewish art. Rob ert Hughes called him “the quintessential Jewish artist of the 20th century.” One of Chagall’s common themes is love as seen via the romantic love in the Daphnis & Chloe suite, brotherly love in his Bible suite, and his Lovers in Paris. Chagall's first major lithography series, ‘Arabian Nights’ (pictured) Vichy, France was an unsafe place for Jews to live, so Chagall, his wife and daughter fled to New York for the duration of the World War II (and a few years after it). His printmaking thus far had predominantly consisted of etchings. In 1948, however, he produced his first major lithography series, ‘Arab ian Nights’, depicting four stories from the collected Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales known as The Thousand and One Nights. Chagall was renowned for the rich palette of his paintings. Before Matisse’s death in 1954, Picasso said that, “Chagall will [soon] be the only painter left who understands color.” Lithography offered him the chance to show that same richness in prints, investing

the images with a sense of magic that is integral to his visual storytelling. With Chagall, nothing is quite as we expect it’s going to be,” wrote Sorlier in 1974. “He has the rare ability to start each morning afresh. For him, each day is the first day, each flower the most b rilliant, each fruit the sweetest… With every stone, lithography is born again… I have had the rare privilege of seeing Chagall at work, and it cannot be denied that, at times, it seems as if an angel has entered the workshop.” As he himself said in the 1960s, “Something would have b een lacking in my life if… I had not at a certain stage become involved in engraving and lithography… Each time I had a lithographic stone or a copper plate in my hands, I felt that I was touching a talisman to which I could entrust all my sorrows and all my joys.” Color is really the key “When it comes to Chagall, color is really the key — and that applies as much to his prints as to any other medium,” says Macaulay, head of Christie’s London. “His lithographs produced in vivid color are perennially the most popular.” The five highest auction prices for Chagall prints have all been for lithographs. The piece pictured is a rare proof extensively hand-colored by the artist in pastel and gives a fascinating insight into the artist’s creative process. The master printer Charles Sorlier, with whom Chagall collab orated at the legendary Imprimerie Mourlot from the early 1950s until his death in 1985, described the artist’s method in making lithographs as follows: “Chagall normally begins the process of producing a lithograph by drawing a composition in black on stone, zinc or transfer paper… The black is nearly always the complete skeleton of the work. After printing some proofs, he adds color, in watercolor or pastel, thus permitting himself a choice between several versions. The maquette established, Chagall then executes the principal plates. Next he and I do our color tests at the printing press, tests which are subsequently submitted to him. He nearly always goes over them again, correcting them and adding other tones. New trial proofs are usually necessary before the definitive adjustments. Only when he finds the proof entirely to his satisfaction does he sign the order to print [the edition].” (C. hat inspired me to open BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs was the desire to share my culture with the Tucson community by offering authentic Mexican food originating from Sonora, Mexico, my hometown. That includes the traditional Sonoran Carne Asada and Sonoran Hot Dog,” says Benjamin L. Galaz, CEO/owner of Tucson’s BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs/BK Tacos. “Not only did I want to offer this food with a unique, authentic flavor that reminded me of home, but I also wanted to offer customers the best experience by taking them back to the dish’s origins and cooking culture by having a self-serve salsa bar with a variety of options that they could choose from to dress their taco and have it their way!”

BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs, which opened in 1994, is just one of the treasured stops along what is designated as “The Best 23 Miles of Mexican Food” in Tucson, a designation bestowed by the Tucson City Council and acknowledged across the country. in Sonoran-style Mexican food, where the chimichanga was invented by Flinn (by accident when she dropped a burrito into the deep-fat fryer!). Also in the area are restaurants including Taqueria Pico de Gallo, which offers staples like carne asada and chicken tacos, as well as lengua (tongue), and Rollie’s, which has birria tacos (tacos made with chunks of chuck roast stew and Oaxacan cheese). BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs’ Sonoran Style Hot Dog is a hot dog wrapped in bacon, on a special bun, with pinto beans, grilled and fresh onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, their secret jalapeño sauce, and served with a side of grilled yellow peppers. At Perfectos, customers arrive for the tamales, while chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos y Tequila and Sona Tortillas de Maiz—as well as Top Chef fame, amongst other shows—is known for offering an impressive selection of taco varieties. For those with a sweet tooth, Oasis Fruit Cones is known for its raspado dessert. The sweet treat includes an option of ice cream or lechera (evaporated milk) drizzled on top of shaved ice, with fresh fruit toppings. And, La Estrella Bakery, a traditional Mexican panaderia, also offers a selection of desserts, including its well-known donuts.

Of course, there is a huge selection of restaurants and specialties in the area. In fact, in addition to offering The Best 23 Miles of Mexican Food, in 2015 Tucson was designated as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy—the first city to receive that honor in the United States. It joined locales such as Brazil and Sweden. These designations draw diners from both around the corner and around the world to savor the locally created cuisine, and yes, especially the abundant Mexican food offerings. “I believe that ‘The 23 Miles of Mexican Food’ is unique because it doesn’t just focus on the food itself, but it focuses on the culture and traditions, and the entire experience, behind every restaurant," says Galaz. “Our family had a role with the mayor of Tucson at the time, to make the claim that Tucson was ‘the Mexican food capital of the world.’ Our proximity to the Sonoran Mexico border just 60 miles away, our diverse agricultural surroundings, and the influence of Native American and Arizona cooking blend together in a way that no other market can compare.
