Food & Furniture Porter Barn Wood—known for handcrafting custom furnishings and decor for some of the nation’s top architects, interior designers, and restaurateurs—recently undertook one of its most ambitious projects yet, and right here in Phoenix. The company transformed a former 1960s storefront just south of Downtown Phoenix into The Coffee Builders, a new breakfast and lunch cafe. The company designed, built, and curated the menus for the project, which fronts Porter Barn Wood’s sprawling lumberyard, wood shop, blacksmith, and

concrete fabrication facilities. The locale offers premium coffee paired with Danish-style, open-faced sandwiches called smørrebrød (sandwiches piled high with a variety of colorful, farm-fresh ingredients atop a fresh-baked Rugbrød, a traditional Danish rye bread); lavash pizzas (such as the roasted garlic honey sriracha BBQ chicken), and unique daily specials such as BBQ goose sliders. There are also fresh-baked, German- and French-inspired pastries, such as blueberry cream cheese bourbon maple turnovers.

“My original plan for this space was to build an experimental showroom or ‘testeraunt,’ as I like to call it, for our hospitality clients to demonstrate exciting new materials, finishes, and service items,” owner Thomas Porter says. “But after we started building it out, I decided we should go all in and create a one-of-a-kind breakfast and lunch experience. I love coffee, food, and building things.” 901 S. 7th St., Phoenix; www.thecoffee builders.com GRAB A BITE AT THE COFFEE BUILDERS

ITALY, IN ARIZONA You’ll forget you traveled to Arizona rather than Italy when you step into Fratelli La Bufala. The new Scottsdale locale is only the second destination in the United States— and its first in Arizona—for the Italy-based restaurant project concept that offers a variety of authentic Neapolitan creations. The brand was founded in Naples in 2003 and created to be an ambassador of Neapolitan pizza at an international level through a network of restaurants with a common identity, although each of them maintains its uniqueness. There are now 70 restaurant locations globally. The other U.S. location is in Miami, Florida. This Scottsdale locale expands the initial Fratelli La Bufala concept into an Italian Ristorante e Pizzeria, complete with a full dining room, handcrafted cocktail bar, and patio. Most seats provide a view of the signature wood-burning oven so you can watch your pizza being prepared. The menu features a variety of authentic Neapolitan creations, with many of the ingredients sourced from Italy daily. Vegetarian and gluten-free menu options are also available. 7300 N. Shake it Up This summer JoJo’s ShakeBAR is opening at Scottsdale Quarter. The Chicago-based favorite is a modern take on a classic diner, and offers over-the-top milkshakes and diner classics. Grounded in nostalgia, JoJo’s ShakeBAR aims to leave kids in awe and transport adults back to simpler times with its ’80s- and ’90s-inspired details, such as arcade game tables. There’s also a walk-up window for shoppers and visitors on the run. The locale’s concept was inspired by co-founder and Managing Partner Robbie Schloss’ childhood memories and named after his daughter, and is designed “for guests to enjoy life’s playful moments with families and friends.” Scottsdale Quarter; corner of South Street and 73rd Street, Scottsdale; www.jojosshakebar.com

THE GREEN GOLD AT FAT OX

Raise the Bar

Modern Italian hot spot Fat Ox has a new, innovative cocktail menu, thanks to famed bar chef Christiaan Röllich. Röllich, who is known as LA’s most inventive barman (as well as the author of BARCHEF – Handcrafted Cocktails), recently took on the role of bar director for all three of chef Matt Carter’s Valley restaurants—The Mission and Zinc Bistro, in addition to Fat Ox. These farm-fresh, handcrafted cocktails include options such as the Green Gold (tequila and pistachio with cucumber and chimichurri), Pinocchio (rum blend and basil with cilantro, fennel, and jalapeno), and Christiaan’s G&T (compound gin and grapefruit with lemongrass and tonic). Röllich’s cocktails are seasonally motivated and created to pair with Carter’s market menu offerings. 6316 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.ilovefatox.com

SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK

If cooler temps are calling your name, head north where the elevation rises. Not only does the vegetation change (green trees!) but you can explore these unique locales.

Near Sedona there’s a natural waterpark where you can slip and slide down natural water slides created in the red sandstone by the flow of Oak Creek. The area was originally the Pendley Homestead, a 43-acre apple orchard. Then in the 1930s, Frank Pendley built cabins and visitors arrived to enjoy the unique landscape, and to splish and splash for summer fun.

GRAND CANYON SKYWALK

Sure the Grand Canyon itself is a sight to see— after all, it is one of the seven wonders of the world. The layered bands of red rock reveal millions of years of geological history at this stunning natural wonder that spans 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. But for a truly unique experience, head to the west side for the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge with a glass walkway that's 4,000 feet above the canyon floor.

HORSESHOE BEND

Located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, just nine miles downstream from where Grand Canyon National Park begins, is Horseshoe Bend. Here, the Colorado River makes its stunning horseshoe-shaped turn, which can be viewed from an overlook approximately 1,000 feet above. 1001 PAGE PKWY., PAGE WWW.CITYOFPAGE.ORG

CANYON COASTER ADVENTURE PARK

Feel the thrill of the wind in your hair while experiencing Arizona’s first—and only—mountain coaster, which opened last summer. Mountain scenery provides a gorgeous setting, and the ride, which takes place in individual carts, covers a mile. The speed of descent, which includes dips, twists, and turns, is controlled by the rider. The park also has summer mountain tubing.

SEDONA

This is a destination in and of itself— explore the city’s shops and dining options, hike the trails, take in the sight of the storied red rocks (with names such as Cathedral, Bell, and Courthouse Butte)—or experience a vortex. One way to get to know the locale is via Pink Jeep Tours, which offers numerous options for exploration via its iconic pink Jeeps.

For many, summer evokes memories of warm nights spent outdoors, chasing the fleeting lights of fireflies. Seemingly relive that summer memory—though indoors—via artist Yayoi Kasama’s You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies experience at Phoenix Art Museum. The experiential exhibit includs a dark room, lined with mirrors, and LED string lights cascading down from the ceiling— which creates an infinity room of twinkling lights that looks like a magical, dancing swarm of fireflies. 1625 N. Chill out in the Valley of the Sun BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

H

ot days in Arizona call for cool fun. Chill out and relax at a water park, lake, wine cellar, or museum.

WONDERFUL WATER WATER PARKS Even in the desert of the Valley, there is plenty of water fun to be had. So as the temps soar, celebrate summer at a cool pool party or by lounging at—yes, really—a beach. First, many hotels and resorts offer day passes, so even if you’re not staying at a locale overnight you can enjoy its ambiance and water features (check with the location directly or book through www.resortpass.com). JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (www.marriott.com) debuted its AquaRidge WaterPark this summer, complete with water slides (including the only dualperson vertical wall tube slide at a resort west of the Mississippi), an enhanced lazy river, the adults-only Sky Island, and more. At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (www.marriott.com), find Adventure Water Park, which not only features the iconic Kierland Flowrider flow-board simulator, but a lazy river, water slide, and the Tommy

Bahama Relaxation Reef private “island.” Meanwhile, Arizona Grand Resort & Spa offers the 7-acre Oasis Water Park (www. arizonagrandresort.com), while Great Wolf Lodge (www.greatwolf. com) features an extensive indoor water park designed with kids in mind. At Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, dig your toes into the sand beach or slide down water slides (www.scottsdaleprincess.com). There are also destination water parks such as Six Flags Hurricane Harbor (www.sixflags.com/phoenix), which has water slides, a wave pool, and a 12,000-square-foot activity pool. Meanwhile, Golfland Sunsplash (www.golfland.com) offers a variety of amusement park and water park activities that range from laser tag and bumper cars to water slides and a wave pool.

SPLASH PADS If you have young kids and running through water rather than rides is more to their liking, there are also several splash pads around town. Find them at Desert Ridge Marketplace (www.shopdesertridge. com), Scottsdale Quarter (www.scottsdalequarter.com), Civic Space Park (www.phoenix.gov), Espee Park (www.chandleraz.gov), and Westgate Entertainment District (www.westgateaz.com).

rent kayaks, pedal boats, paddle boards, electric boats, or go fishing. Just 17 miles northeast of Carefree is Bartlett Lake (www. bartlettlake.com), where you can swim, fish, and rent a boat, kayak, or jet skis. At Canyon Lake (www.fs.usda.gov), you can fish, swim, scuba dive, and more—and take a dinner cruise, scenic cruise, or astronomy cruise on The Dolly Steamboat (https:// dollysteamboat.com), a replica of a classic American sternwheeler. At Lake Pleasant (www.maricopaparks.net), near Peoria, there’s boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, kayaking, and an inflatable obstacle course. There’s also H2-Whoa!, the world’s largest floating water slide. If you would rather lounge in the water than run through or play in it, grab an inner tube and float down a river. Salt River Tubing (www.saltrivertubing.com) offers tube rentals and a shuttle bus service to the Salt River, where those ages 8 and up can float through the Tonto National Forest.

For those 21 and over, several Valley destinations throw large pool parties. Scottsdale's Talking Stick Resort (www.talkingstickresort. com) launched its Wave pool party series for this summer. Held on select Saturdays, it features EDM performers, live activations, and more. The Wet Deck at W Scottsdale also becomes a big party from Friday to Saturday, while Hotel Valley Ho (www. hotelvalleyho.com) in Scottsdale has DJs every Friday and Sunday (Saturday is for hotel guests only). At Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass (www.playatgila.com) in Chandler, find a pool party with celebrity guests and internationally recognized DJs on the last Saturday of each month. Scottsdale’s Maya Day Club (www.mayaclubaz.com) also throws trendy pool parties on Saturdays and Sundays, and Phoenix's Lylo Swim Club (www.riseuptownhotel.com) features DJs during the weekends.

TAKE IT TO THE LAKE (OR RIVER!)

Water sports, boats, and other water fun can be had at one of the nearby local lakes. Swimming isn’t allowed at the manmade Tempe Town Lake (www.tempe.gov); however, you can

Also in Chandler, color kids happy with a visit to the Crayola Experience (www.crayolaexperience.com), which features 20,000 square feet of attractions. After you’re done with a day of fun, book a dinner at the iconic LON’s at the Hermosa Inn, which opens its private underground wine cellar—kept at cool 57 degrees—for a one-of-a-kind, prix-fixe, five-course cool summer culinary experience, offered Thursday through Sunday.

MUST-SEE MUSEUMS Another way to get out of the heat is to tour one of the Valley’s many museums. Popular destinations include Phoenix Art Museum (www.phxart.org), the largest art museum in the Southwest; the Musical Instrument Museum (www.mim.org), the world’s only global musical instrument museum; Arizona Science Center (www. azscience.org), which not only includes extensive and hands-on exhibits but a planetarium; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (www.smoca.org), also known as SMoCA to those in-theknow and dedicated to contemporary art, architecture, and design; the Heard Museum (www.heard.org), a top museum for the presentation, interpretation, and advancement of American Indian art; and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (www. scottsdalemuseumwest.org), offering the story of the Greater Western region. Those who enjoy architecture can explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West (www.taliesinwest.org), Frank Lloyd Wright’s (1867-1959) winter home and desert laboratory. Meanwhile, children enjoy the Children’s Museum of Phoenix (www.childrensmuseumofphoenix.org), which is one of the top three children’s museums in the nation.

Places to Enjoy Ice Cream

As the weather heats up, cool down with a sweet treat. Whether a regular or alcoholic option, these five places offer tasty, summery creations. BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN 1 CHURN

Chock-full of sweets and goodies, Churn is a nostalgic ice cream parlor where you’ll find artisan ice cream, baked treats, and candy-coated, nostalgic favorites from years gone by. One of our favorites? The homemade ice cream sandwich made with

freshly baked cookies. 5223 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; www.churnaz.com

2 SWEET REPUBLIC

This Valley ice cream shop has been creating and scooping homemade artisan ice cream since 2008. Along the way, it has

won a slew of awards, including Top 10 Ice Cream by Bon Appetit. Among its unique flavor creations: blueberry honey basic, black pepper cherry, cortez cold brew, and honey lavender. Flavor options rotate. Locations in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tempe. www.sweetrepublic.com

3 BUZZED BULL CREAMERY

Here the creations are made by harnessing the power of liquid nitrogen to create fresh, customized premium ice creams and milkshakes. Adults can choose to order the alcohol-infused options. 7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; www.buzzedbullcreamery.com

4 SUGAR BOWL

Satisfy an ice cream craving at the historic and nostalgic Sugar Bowl, which has been serving ice cream treats—as well as American food favorites—since 1958. The menu, decor, and location has remained virtually unchanged since this popular locale opened. 4005 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.sugarbowlscottsdale.com

5 SWEET PROVISIONS

At Sweet Provisions, the ice cream is made using local Arizona dairy and fresh ingredients. The locale also offers baked goods, and its house-baked treats are also all made from scratch. 8120 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.sweetprovisionsaz.com
