A New Journey

One of Metro Phoenix’s most unique—and top-notch—cocktail bars kicked off a new journey. Platform 18, an award-winning, immersive cocktail experience set in a glamorous, presidential Pullman-inspired train car, just debuted its newest iteration.

For this one, take a seat in the train car, join host Hollis Cottley Pennington (the “powerful railroad tycoon and bootlegger”), and be transported to New York City in 1924 via the scenes that go by in the windows and the cocktail menu inspired by the time period.

During the 90-minute experience (reservations strongly recommended) choose from a thoughtfully created menu of handcrafted cocktails designed to tell a tale of Prohibition and the powerful women who rose to prominence during the Roaring Twenties.

Despite his short life from 1840 to 1877, his exploits are of mythical proportions. My sculpture depicts him as he may have looked after the Battle of the Little Big Horn, where he defeated George Custer. The eagle thighbone whistle, war club, spotted buffalo calf cape, and 1866 Winchester Yellow Boy rifle were all mentioned in historical documents as part of his battle gear. SIP IN THE SKY

The Valley’s hottest rooftop bars and restaurants

J&G Steakhouse and Thirsty Camel

There is nothing quite like wining and dining al fresco this time of the year. Why not kick it up a notch by taking the concept of patio dining to new heights—literally—by exploring one of the Valley’s rooftop (or nearly rooftop) bars this spring? Here are some favorites.

THE ROOFTOP AT LOVECRAFT

This North Phoenix rooftop bar is perched above the popular Lovecraft kitchen, tap, and bottle shop. Limited to just 50 guests at any given time, this intimate, open-air hidden gem boasts an oversized chandelier that glows when the sun sets over the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The full restaurant menu is available on the roof, including New Mexican-inspired cuisine, Texas-style smoked meats, over 100 craft beers, and more. Bonus: There are ample misters going in the summer months and both heaters and blankets for use during the colder months. 3128 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; www.lovecraftphx.com

UPSTAIRS AT FLINT

Here, find a fanciful feast for all the senses. Make your way up the semi-secret staircase to the luxurious lounge above Flint by Baltaire. You’ll be welcomed by a burst of fresh air, followed by

city and mountain views, and then a series of murals and art pieces, and modern furniture and crystal chandeliers that glow as night falls. The experience comes to a dazzling crescendo as the cocktails arrive at the table, each presented with beautiful garnish and ultra-premium spirits. 2425 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; www.flintbybaltaire.com/upstairs-at-flint

ONYX BAR & LOUNGE

There are million-dollar views, and then there are the views from Onyx at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale Troon North, which are priceless. Located at the base of Pinnacle Peak mountain and looking southward from North Scottsdale so the entire city is within view, this indoor-outdoor, second-floor bar has the service and sophistication one would expect from the Four Seasons brand, yet a seductive personality all its own. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale; www.fourseasonsscottsdale.com

FLOOR 13 ROOFTOP BAR

Unlucky no more, those who choose to ride the elevator to the 13th floor—aka the rooftop—of the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown are in for a treat. Offering an epic view of Downtown Phoenix, the ultra-chic Floor 13 rooftop bar boasts plush chaise lounges, a full terrace, and a clever bar menu. As the historic building where Floor 13 now sits was featured in the opening skyline scene of the classic movie Psycho, the menu features nine cocktails named to honor Alfred Hitchcock and his movies. 15 E.
