LIGHT THE WAY
In Arizona we’re all about recycling. The newest way to note is that two of our favorites—local companies Tequila Corrido and Scottsdale Candle Company—teamed up to create luxury candles made using Tequila Corrido’s recycled tequila bottles. These candles, which are hand-poured in small batches, are made from Tequila Corrido’s Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo expression bottles, and feature Scottsdale Candle Company’s signature scent of a sweet blend of tangy grapefruit with a punch of citrus and peach, and a hint of vanilla. They are made from soy wax, and are environmentally friendly, paraffin-free, and clean-burning. “Tequila Corrido is committed to preventing environmental waste through each aspect of the tequila development process,” says Tequila Corrido COO Anthony Boyle. “Partnering with Scottsdale Candle Company allows us to make sure the recycled bottles find a new home after the enjoyment of our tequila expressions.” Cheers to that. A MODERN TWIST ON JAPANESE CUISINE
A dish at Uchi
James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole—one of the few American sushi masters—delivers a modern twist on Japanese cuisine with his newly opened restaurant, Uchi. Enjoy signature tastings, sushi, and a seasonal omakase. Cole’s ultimate goal, he says, is to bring the intimacy of the sushi bar experience to the entire restaurant— along with creating what he refers to as “the perfect bite” in every dish. 3821 N. Great Golf
If you’re inspired by the WM Phoenix Open and ready to spend the day on the course, the Valley has a plethora of options. A few to try include We-ko-Pa Golf Club (www. wekopa.com) in Fort McDowell, where there are two award-winning courses to choose from. Also offering two courses is Troon North Golf Club (www.troonnorthgolf.com). Here, both the Pinnacle Course and Monument Course were ranked among the “Top 10” Best Golf Courses You Can Play in Arizona by Golfweek. Grayhawk Golf Club (www. grayhawkgolf.com) has a par-72 that stretches over gentle hills and across shaded natural arroyos, while the Talon Course offers views of the nearby McDowell Mountains and the city skyline. In Carefree, just past North Scottsdale, find The Boulders Club (www.bouldersclub.com), where both courses feature views of the area’s unique boulder formations—and the South Course even features holes that go right up into the striking formations. When the Open is finished, you can score a tee time at the TPC Scottsdale (www.tpc.com/scottsdale) on the same course (the Stadium Course) the pros just played. BE MOVED BY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
This museum began with an inspiration to develop a location that focused on the kind of instruments played every day by people worldwide. Today, the Musical Instrument Museum— affectionately called the MIM—is the only museum of its kind in the world, and boasts a collection of more than 7,500 instruments from more than 200 world countries. Instruments featured include everything from a pochette (pocket fiddle) used in the court of King Henry IV of France to instruments played by icons such as Elvis Presley. The latest exhibit, Acoustic America: Iconic Guitars, Mandolins, and Banjos, includes a collection of historic stringed instruments. There are also touring concerts in the locale’s theatre. 4725 E. TOUR A MANSION BUILT BY A CHEWING GUM MAGNATE
Perched atop a hill in Phoenix is Wrigley Mansion, built in 1932 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. as a 50th anniversary gift to his wife. The views from the home are stunning, as is its architecture. The home changed hands several times, first sold by the Wrigley family in 1973. In 1992, it was purchased by the now-late Geordie Hormel and his wife, Jamie. Today, the restored mansion—which still features many original items—is a top finedining and special event venue. Tours of the storied landmark are offered daily and showcase the destination’s colorful history and even some of the much-discussed ghost stories. 2501 E. LEARN ALL ABOUT FIREFIGHTING
Have you ever seen an 1897 Champion water tower or American La France Type 400 senior fire engines dating from the mid1930s? What about a 1935 Ford/Pirsch flathead V8 fire engine? More than 4,000 arm patches from fire departments around the world? Manual and horse-drawn equipment? The Hall of Flame has it all. There are more than 130 wheeled pieces in the collection and more than 10,000 smaller objects, all of which relate to the history of firefighting. 6101 E. Van Buren St., Phoenix; www.hallofflame.org
EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF A MAGICAL FIREFLY ROOM
Ever been surrounded by an almost infinite swarm of fireflies? You can experience the magic at artist Yayoi Kasama’s You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies exhibition, which has been on view since 2005 at Phoenix Art Museum, the largest art museum in the southwestern U.S. The beloved experience features a dark room, lined with mirrors, with LED string lights cascading down from the ceiling, which creates an infinity room of twinkling lights that look like a dancing swarm of fireflies—making it a magical experience that will take you back to summer nights. 1625 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; www.phxart.org 23
VIEW COSANTI AND WATCH WINDBELLS BEING MADE
Tucked into a quiet neighborhood in Paradise Valley is Cosanti, built by architect, urban designer, and philosopher Paolo Soleri (1919-2013). The structures here were created with his “Earth-casting” technique, which adhered to his idea of “arcology.” At Cosanti, you can take a tour, as well as watch artisans still pour and make the famous Cosanti Originals windbells. Finished windbells are also available for purchase at the locale. 6433 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Paradise Valley; www.cosanti.com
FIND SERENITY AT A JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN
We bet that you wouldn’t expect to find a lush and authentic Japanese garden in the middle of the desert, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix. A project of the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan, here you can stroll the 3.5acre stroll garden, enjoy an authentic tea ceremony, and view a 12-foot waterfall. 1125 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org

CRÈME BRÛLÉE AT THE MICK BRASSERIE

THE PIÑA COLADA CAKE AT TOMMY BAHAMA RESTAURANT & BAR

TOFU PANNA COTTA AT SANDFISH SUSHI AND WHISKEY
A true delight that harmonizes creamy tofu with vibrant notes of blood orange and hibiscus. Crowned with a tantalizing coconut streusel, it is finished with an artful drizzle of luscious mango coulis. $13. 4232 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix; www.sandfishsushiwhiskey.com
TARTUFFO AL CIOCCOLATO AT MARCELLINO RISTORANTE
Ube is a sweet purple yam from the Philippines that has both a nutty flavor and a distinct hint of vanilla. It is boiled and then mashed with condensed milk until it has a luscious custard constituency. Once chilled, it is paired with sliced strawberries, blackberries, kiwi, and a sweet wafer. $10. 7299 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.rokaakor.com
Chocolate enrobed in chocolate makes this dessert the ultimate chocoholics dream. The star of the show is a generous sphere of rich Italian-style chocolate gelato. The density of the frozen treat allows it to be rolled in imported cocoa, crushed almonds, and bittersweet dark chocolate bits, creating the perfect combination of textures. $18. 7114 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; www.marcellinoristorante.com

BAKED ALASKA AT PRIME STEAK HOUSE
Not only is there ample butter in the ooey, gooey cake itself, but it is also a key ingredient in the mouth-watering glaze, which not only acts to keep the cake moist, but gives it a nice crust, similar to an old-fashioned donut. $15. 7000 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix; www.thefederalgrill.com
A visual WOW, this take on the Baked Alaska—ice cream and cake topped with browned meringue—is made using key lime gelato, shortbread, and raspberry compote, giving it a striking white and red-spiked look that dazzles tableside. $11. 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler; www.playatgila.com 27

Making this version extra-special: scotch pumpkin spice, toasted pepitas, pomegranates, and Villa Dolce vanilla ice cream. $9. 3815 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale; 7122 E. HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK TRAIL AND DOUBLE BUTTE LOOP For those seeking an easier hike with great scenery, head to Phoenix’s Papago Park and take the Double Butte Loop (2.3-mile loop), which begins in the West Park Parking Lot, and enjoy the red sandstone formations. Those looking for more of a challenge can try climbing Phoenix’s Piestewa Peak, which rises 2,610 feet—making it the second-highest point in the Phoenix Mountains. Located in Phoenix Mountain Preserve, this 2.1-mile out-and-back trail is a difficult, steep hike. The reward? The stunning 360-degree views of Metro Phoenix. Rating: Challenging

Of course, for those looking for the most iconic of hikes, that would be Camelback Mountain (named for its resemblance to a reclining camel). Both trails are difficult, but for those who make it to the top, the 360-degree views are breathtaking. Rating: Challenging
