6 Great Places to Explore Around the State

The summer is a perfect time to take a day (or more!) and head north or south from Metro Phoenix toward cooler temps. Nothing says summer like a quick, fun road trip and day of exploration.

1

KARTCHNER CAVERNS

Discovered in 1974, Kartchner Caverns were withheld from public access for 25 years. Today, you can explore the stunning passages via guided tours, and marvel at one of the world’s longest soda straw formations, helictites, waving flowstone, and the Kubla Khan—a formation that is 58 feet tall.

2

MARANA

Located northwest of Tucson, Marana is home to one of the nation’s most treasured parks, Saguaro National Park West, as well as El Rio Preserve, a top birding hot spot. There are numerous restaurants, from family-friendly to date-night ready; championship-level golf courses; retail shopping and outlets; and Ironwood Forest National Monument. Marana is the perfect basecamp to explore Tucson-area attractions like Pima Air & Space Museum and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

GRAND CANYON & GRAND CANYON SKYWALK

Sure the Grand Canyon itself is a sight to see— after all, it is one of the seven wonders of the world. The layered bands of red rock reveal millions of years of geological history at this stunning natural wonder that spans 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. But for a truly unique experience, head to the west side for the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge with a glass walkway.

4

SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK

Near Sedona there’s a natural waterpark where you can slip and slide down natural waterslides created in the red sandstone by the flow of Oak Creek. The area was originally the Pendley Homestead, a 43-acre apple orchard. Then in the 1930s, Frank Pendley built cabins and visitors arrived to enjoy the unique landscape, and to splish and splash for cool summer fun.

LOWELL OBSERVATORY

Here, the sky beckons. First built in 1894, this observatory has been home to a plethora of discoveries—including the first detection of the expanding nature of the universe, the discovery of Pluto, and the discovery of the rings of Uranus. The location is open to the public and offers telescope viewing, exhibits, and events.

SEDONA

This is a destination in and of itself—explore the city’s shops and dining options, hike the trails, take in the sight of the storied red rocks—with names such as Cathedral, Bell, and Courthouse Butte—or experience a vortex. One way to get to know the locale is via a Pink Adventure Tour, which offers numerous options for exploration via its iconic pink Jeeps.

SLIP, SLIDE, AND DIVE [POOL PARTIES]

It’s the ultimate summertime experience—a pool party. And many Valley locations go all-out with their experiences, with DJs or concerts, dancing, food and drink specials, and more. For 2024, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa (www.hyattregency scottsdale.com) debuts “Scottchella,” a summer festival-inspired event full of activities, food, Instagram-worthy decor, and more. At W Scottsdale (www.marriott.com), the Wet Deck becomes a big party from Friday to Sunday, complete with DJs spinning tunes and bottle service. Hotel Valley Ho (www.hotelvalleyho.com) also has DJs every Friday to Sunday, as well as weekend themes and events. In Downtown Phoenix, the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown (www. marriott.com) has Summer Pool Party Saturdays with live music, DJs, and food and drinks. And at Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass (www.playatgila.com) in Chandler, find a pool party with celebrity guests and internationally recognized DJs on the last Saturday of each month (June 29: Ludacris, July 27: Two Friends, Aug. 31: Tyga, Sept. 21: R3HAB). Scottsdale’s Maya Day Club (www. mayaclubaz.com) also throws trendy pool parties on Fridays, Saturdays, and some Sundays, with dancing, world-renowned DJs, and more. NOTE: Many of these are for ages 21-plus only, and many of the hotels welcome outside guests via day passes or tickets.

[WATER PARKS]

Even if you're not heading to a specific pool party event, many hotels and resorts offer day passes. This means that even if you’re not staying at a locale overnight, you can enjoy its ambiance and water features (check with the location directly or book through www.resortpass.com). JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (www.jwdesertridge.com) has its AquaRidge WaterPark, which includes an enhanced lazy river, three water slides (including the only dual-person vertical wall tube slide at a resort west of the Mississippi), the adults-only Sky Island, and more. At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (www.marriott.com), find Adventure Water Park, which not only features the iconic

Kierland Flowrider flow-board simulator, but a lazy river, 110-foot water slide, and the Tommy Bahama Relaxation Reef Private “island.” Meanwhile, Arizona Grand Resort & Spa offers the seven-acre Oasis Water Park (www.arizonagrandresort.com), with its eight-story thrill slides, giant wave pool, and a 25-person hot tub, while Great Wolf Lodge (www.greatwolf.com) features an extensive indoor water park designed with kids in mind. At Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (www.scottsdaleprincess.com), dig your toes into a sand beach, slide down water slides, and enjoy the popular Summer at the Princess events, such as dive-in movies and fireworks.

There are also destination water parks, such as Six Flags Hurricane Harbor (www.sixflags.com/phoenix), which has water slides, a wave pool, the adventure river, splash areas, and a 12,000-square-foot activity pool. Meanwhile, Golfland Sunsplash (www.golfland.com/mesa) offers a variety of amusement park and water park activities that range from laser tag and bumper cars to water slides and a wave pool. And at Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic & Fitness Center (www.scottsdaleaz.gov), there is a water slide, lazy river, pool, and splash pad.

[SPLASH PADS]

If you have young kids and running through water rather than big rides is more to their liking, there are also several splash pads around town. Of course, adults are welcome to indulge their inner child at these locations, too! Head to Desert Ridge Marketplace (www. shopdesertridge.com), Scottsdale Quarter (www.scottsdalequarter. com), Tempe Marketplace (www.tempemarketplace.com), Civic Space Park (www.phoenix.gov), Sunset Palms Park (www.glendaleaz.com), and Espee Park (www.chandleraz.gov).

TAKE IT TO THE LAKE (OR RIVER!)

Water sports, boats, and other water fun can be had at one of the nearby local lakes. Swimming isn’t allowed at the man-made Tempe Town Lake (www.tempe.gov), but you can rent kayaks,

pedal boats, paddle boards, electric boats, or go fishing. Just 17 miles northeast of Carefree is Bartlett Lake (www.bartlettlake. com), where you can swim, fish, and rent a boat, kayak, water skis or jet skis. About an hour from Phoenix is Canyon Lake (www.canyonlakemarina.com), where you can fish, swim, jet ski, waterski, scuba dive, and more—and take a dinner cruise, scenic cruise, or astronomy cruise on The Dolly Steamboat (https:// dollysteamboat.com), a replica of a classic American sternwheeler. At Lake Pleasant (www.maricopaparks.net), near Peoria, there’s boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, kayaking, and an inflatable obstacle course. There’s also H2-Whoa!, the world’s largest floating water slide.

For those who would rather lounge in the water than run through or play in it, Salt River Tubing (www.saltrivertubing.com) offers tube rentals and a shuttle bus service to the Salt River, where those ages 8-plus can then float through the Tonto National Forest.

CHILL OUT INDOORS

While in many areas of the country people head outdoors during the summer, in Metro Phoenix, we head indoors. Spend time at these fun locations while soaking up the air conditioning.

Arizona Boardwalk (www.azboardwalk.com) is a Scottsdale destination with a number of attractions, including the Museum of Illusions (https://moiscottsdale.com), Odysea Aquarium (www. odyseaaquarium.com), the largest aquarium in the Southwest; Butterfly Wonderland (www.butterflywonderland.com), the largest indoor butterfly conservatory in America; Ripley’s Believe it or Not! (www.ripleysaz.com), a unique collection of objects and artifacts; and more. There are also dining spots and shops.

For an icy time, head to the Ice Den (www.icedenscottsdale.com), an indoor ice skating rink that has locations in both Scottsdale and Chandler.

Also in Chandler, color kids happy with a visit to the Crayola Experience (www.crayolaexperience.com), which features 20,000 square feet of attractions.

After you’re done with a day of fun, book a dinner at the iconic LON’s at the Hermosa Inn (www.hermosainn.com), which opens its private underground wine cellar (kept at 57 degrees)—for a one-ofa-kind culinary experience, offered Thursdays through Sundays.

MUST-SEE MUSEUMS

Another way to get out of the heat is to tour one of the Valley’s many museums. Popular destinations include Phoenix Art Museum (https://phxart.org), the largest art museum in the southwestern United States; the Musical Instrument Museum (www.mim.org), the world’s only global musical instrument museum, which also offers a summer concert series; Arizona Science Center (www.azscience. org), which includes hands-on exhibits; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (www.smoca.org), also known as SMoCA to those in-the-know, and dedicated to contemporary art, architecture, and design; the Heard Museum (https://heard.org), a top museum for the presentation, interpretation, and advancement of American Indian art; and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (www.scottsdalemuseumwest.org), which offers the stories of the Greater Western region. Those who enjoy architecture can explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West (www.taliesinwest.org), Frank Lloyd Wright’s (1867-1959) winter home and desert laboratory. Meanwhile, children enjoy the Children’s Museum of Phoenix (www.childrensmuseumofphoenix.org), which is one of the top children’s museums in the nation.

Sweet & Spirited

5 fabulously boozy twists on ice cream BYALISONBAILINBATZ

I scream! You scream! We all scream for ice cream … especially for these frozen treats (for those 21-andover), which are infused with one or more spirits. Each is a sinfully sweet way to beat the summer heat.

1. BANANA SPILT SHAKE

Each of the Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers locations across the Valley has a host of adultthemed summer treats. A guest favorite, this updated twist on a banana split is a blend of vanilla ice cream and Howler Head Banana Whiskey. It is poured into a chocolate sauce-rimmed glass and topped with colorful sprinkles, whipped cream, and a cherry. Other favorites include the Irish Oreo, which features vanilla ice cream, Oreos, and Absolut Vanilla vodka, and the

Immersive cocktail bar Platform 18, located within Arcadia’s award-winning Century Grand, offers a full menu of boozy ice creams all year, with this one made especially for guests who are vegan. It pairs vegan ice cream with coconut milk, bitters, Sazerac 6-Year Rye Whiskey, and caramel that has been infused with absinthe, and it is garnished with a pizzelle Italian waffle biscuit. $13 at www.centurygrandphx.com 3 4

PB&J, which has vanilla ice cream, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, and Western Son Blueberry Vodka. $13.50 at www. coldbeers.com

2. FROZEN MARGARITA SOUFFLÉ

As over-the-top in its look as its deliciousness, this frozen phenom features a buttery shortbread as its base and then has mouthwatering layers of caramelized meringue and frozen anglaise made using all the traditional margarita ingredients. As a result, every bite is bursting with notes of

tequila, tart lime, and sweet agave. $12 at www.themexicano.com

3. GIRL SCOUT MILKSHAKE

JoJo’s ShakeBAR's Andes Mint Chocolate Shake is a decadent symphony of rich flavors. It is made by combining mint and vanilla ice cream until they are the consistency of a milkshake, and then adding toasted marshmallows, chocolate pretzels, luscious chocolate s'mores, and a delectable double chocolate cookie. The final touch is a generous pour (or two) of Jameson Irish Whiskey, complete with a mini bottle of the spirit upside down on the milkshake as a cheeky garnish. $20 at www.jojosshakebar.com

4. THE ADULT MILKSHAKE

The Phoenician Tavern at The Phoenician Scottsdale boasts two adult milkshakes on its summer menu. The vanilla option features house-made vanilla

ice cream blended with Van Gogh Vanilla Vodka and Kahlua French Vanilla Liqueur, while the chocolate version brings together a heavenly blend of chocolate ice cream, Van Gogh Vanilla Vodka, and Godiva Chocolate Liqueur. Both frozen beverages are served in an old-fashioned milkshake glass and topped with fresh whipped cream. $17 at www. thephoenician.com
