In addition to a plethora of art museums, art galleries and art events abound throughout the Valley of the Sun
BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
While there are plenty of art museums at which to marvel at artistic creations, those who love art can take time to explore the many art galleries and art events offered in the Valley of the Sun. From paintings to sculptures to mixed media creations, and works from historically renowned artists to those who are up-and-coming, there is much that is artfully enticing to browse, experience, and for those who want, to buy.
SCOTTSDALE’S ARTS DISTRICT
There are more than 100 art galleries located in Scottsdale, with more than 30 of them located in Scottsdale’s Art District, an area defined as Main Street from Scottsdale Road to Goldwater Boulevard and north on Marshall Way, across Indian School Road to the Horse Fountain on 5th Avenue.
One major gallery is American Fine Art, Inc. (3908 N. Scottsdale Road; www.warhol.me). The 12,000-square-foot gallery draws everyone from collectors to prominent art museums, and showcases works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, LeRoy Neiman, and Marc Chagall. This month American Fine Art is hosting the world premiere of AtZ, the first catalogue raisonne and book on the infamous street artist AtZ. The event, which is open to the public, showcases the almost 500-page book, spotlighting the artist on the world stage. There will also be AtZ masterpieces, with special collections ranging from “Director’s Cut” to some of AtZ’s surprises on the Old-World masters. Hundreds of AtZ paintings transform the diverse gallery of masters into a street art paradise. Every era, icon, and style that AtZ works in will be seen. The exhibit will be on view through April 9.
At Bonner David Galleries (7040 E. Main St.; www. bonnerdavid.com) find a dual gallery that showcases both representational art and contemporary art from more than 30 artists from around the globe. This month have a “sweet” experience there with the Sweet Season exhibit, where noted confectionary artist Peter Anton shows his three-dimensional treats—boxes of delectably wrapped candies, doughnuts, ice cream novelties, and scrumptious cakes—all of which look good enough
to eat. This exhibit is on display through March 11. Nearby is Pavilion Fine Arts (7034 E. Main St.; https:// pavilionfineafts.com). Founded by fine art photographer Jon Wendell, the space showcases a diverse range of artistic explorations, from photography to contemporary artworks to glass, metal, and compilation pieces.
Another must-see is Larsen Gallery (3705 N. Bishop Lane; www.larsengallery.com), which features works from a variety of artists. A national leader in the secondary art market for more than 25 years, it is also the home of the internationally known Larsen Art Auction (the spring auction will be held April 20).
J Klein Gallery (7136 E. Main St.; www.jkleingallery.com) features the works of three family artists—Jim Klein, Dan Ostermiller, and Jeff Berryman. The three focus on contemporary paintings and bronze wildlife sculptures.
To view paintings and sculptures by Native American, Western, and Southwestern artists, stop by Bischoff’s Gallery (3925 N. Brown Ave.; www.bischoffsgallery.com), while Amery Bohling Fine Art (7100 E. Main St.; www.amerybohling.com) features the work of painter Amery Bohling, who is best known for her works of the Grand Canyon.
ROOSEVELT ROW
The Roosevelt Row Arts District in Downtown Phoenix is known for its public art, live music performances, art galleries, boutiques, and small businesses. The walkable creative district runs between 7th Avenue and 16th Street on Roosevelt Street.

Scottsdale's ArtWalk takes place on Thursday evenings.
GRAB YOUR SNEAKERS…
On Thursday evenings, head to Scottsdale’s Arts District for Scottsdale ArtWalk, the longest-running event of its kind in the nation. Held from 7-9 p.m., the free event is a perfect time to wander the participating galleries. Scottsdale Gallery Association members also often host exclusive events and showcase featured Scottsdale and national artists.
In addition to the weekly events, eight times a year the Gold Palette Series presents special themes that enhance the event.
For more information, visit www.scottsdalegalleries.com.
Meanwhile in Downtown Phoenix, Artlink’s First Fridays Art Walks are held the first Friday of every month from 6-10 p.m. and are one of the nation’s largest, self-guided art walks. Similarly, Third Fridays are known as “Gallery Night,” and are held the third Friday of every month. For both, visit www.artlinkphx.org for more information.
eye lounge
Art-lovers have been finding unique pieces at Alwun House (1204 E. Roosevelt St.; www.alwunhouse.org), a nonprofit alternative/contemporary art gallery, performance venue, and foundation, for 50 years.
Nearby, located in MADE Art Boutique, find eye lounge (922 N. 5th St.; www.eyelounge.com), a contemporary, artist-run space that fosters emerging and established visual artists. Each month, the gallery features new exhibits by Arizona artists. Through March 10 view Veiled Inscriptions, a Dean Terasaki project. In this body of work, Terasaki activates his photographs of WWII Japanese American incarceration sites with historical letters mailed by the camp prisoners.
Just a few steps off Roosevelt Street is FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel, which houses the FOUND:RE Contemporary gallery (1100 N. Central Ave.; www.foundrehotels.com/contemporary). The gallery showcases both emerging and established artists in partnership with Artlink Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting artists, businesses, and the community.
AROUND THE VALLEY
Beyond Scottsdale and Phoenix, there are galleries across the Valley. Vision Gallery (10 E. Chicago St.; www.visiongallery.org) in Chandler is the locale for evolving exhibitions across a variety of media, from drawings to paintings and sculptures to photography. The works featured are all created by local and regional artists, and a percentage of the artwork sales helps fund free arts education workshops for local youth.
In Tempe, the Fine Art Complex (1101 W. University Drive; www.fineartcomplex.com) presents contemporary works across a variety of mediums by local, national, and international emerging and established artists. The gallery is housed in a landmark building designed by modernist architect Will Bruder.
In Downtown Phoenix, Bentley Gallery (250 E. McKinley St.; https://bentleygallery.com), which was founded in 1984, showcases contemporary paintings and sculptures from mid-career and museumcollected artists from the United States and Europe. Currently on display through the end of the month are works by Mark Pomilio.

MICHELLEGLICKSMAN
1. MAPLE & ASH
This brunch, offered every weekend from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., is an experience. For $75 per person, enjoy your choice of a brunch entree, plus warm beignets, maple glazed bacon, seasonal scones, fire roasted filet mignon, and crispy breakfast potatoes for the table. Add-ons include boozy brunch cocktails, large format drinks, mimosa service, martini trees that serve 8-12 people, a fire-roasted seafood tower, or a Belgian waffle tower. For Easter, there’s a special Easter brunch. 7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; www.mapleandash.com
