Every new painting is a snapshot of moments that add up to become the final product of each face he captures. Every piece in his exhibition with Bonner David Galleries reveals the depth of experience both lived, and ultimately captured, by this talented artist. NEIGHBORHOOD
Located at the Omni Tempe Hotel, Neighborhood Services is an approachable, all-day dining venue with indoor and outdoor seating for savoring its menu of rotating favorites and craft cocktails. The American fare is hearty, and the Southwestern vibe, coupled with some Arizona State University nods, adds a great local touch. Lucero is Omni’s sky-high restaurant that emulates the starry night above. The rooftop destination provides the ideal vantage point to witness iconic sunsets while savoring inventive bites. The tapas-style menu features small, shareable plates, with signature dishes including crispy branzino, Moroccan empanadas, and chilled lobster. 7 E. University Drive, Tempe; www.omnihotels.com
The “little sister” of fine-dining juggernaut Anhelo in Downtown Phoenix, this newly opened Tempe restaurant is a love letter to the Tempe community from chef Ivan Jacobo, who calls the area home. Expect wine at great value here, as well as seasonally inspired specialty cocktails, and an incredible menu of land, sea, and garden dishes, including an extensive vegetarian selection. 944 S. Mill Ave., Tempe; www.flourandthymerestaurant.com
Nestled within The Westin Tempe, Terra Tempe Kitchen & Spirits offers a fresh take on modern American cuisine, under the direction of executive chef Mario Ventura. Mill Ave., Tempe; www.westintempe.com
Mastro’s likely grew up right along with the family. In 1999, Mastro’s opened as a local, family-owned, high-end steak and seafood restaurant on Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak. Soon after came Mastro’s Ocean Club and Mastro’s City Hall. All have been successes, and today, under the Laundry brand, they continue to draw crowds with their 28-day, wet-aged USDA Prime steaks, as well as their two-foot-tall seafood towers. 6991 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 8852 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale; 15045 N. Kierland Blvd.; Scottsdale; www.mastrosrestaurants.com
Tucked away in the iconic Hotel Valley Ho, this neighborhood favorite offers a unique, mid-century modern flair. From daily brunch, weekly specials, and a monthly themed over-the-top shake, ZuZu keeps it fresh while still offering its signature favorites from lauded chef Russell LaCasce. Dining on weekend nights includes live music from local musicians, perfect for pairing with light bites and craft cocktails from the bar. 6850 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.hotelvalleyho.com
James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole opened Uchi— Japanese for “house”—earlier this year, imaging it as a space offering elevated takes on non-traditional Japanese cuisine, including several multi-course tasting menus nightly. The dishes are unlike anything in the Valley, such as pork belly with Japanese pumpkin, oak-grilled escolar, and A5 Wagyu with yolk custard. 3821 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.uchi.uchirestaurants.com
Located at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, this chic, sleek twist on the traditional steakhouse and lounge founded by celebrity chef Michael Mina is a local icon. From the dramatic bar that overlooks a multi-story glass wine cellar to the open-air dining room that transitions seamlessly into a secret garden-like patio, the aesthetic is over-the-top glamorous and perfectly complements the outrageous menu of proteins, seafood, and shellfish. 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; www.scottsdaleprincess.com

Located at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Tía Carmen is the brainchild of award-winning celebrity chef Angelo Sosa. Named after Sosa’s aunt, the eatery is a tribute to all things Southwest, including local farmers, ingredients, artisans, and
traditions. Sosa also recently opened the doors to Kembara at the resort. Kembara is inspired by Asian street food flavors, and every plate looks like a work of art. At Kembara, jumbo lump crab comes standard in fried rice, and even the usually basic chicken skewers are an extravaganza of finessed flavors.

As much a feast for the eyes as the appetite, Pyro exploded onto the local food scene in 2023 and has been on fire ever since. The open-flame restaurant manipulates fire with wood and charcoal to roast, sear, grill, and smoke, enhancing the natural flavors of ingredients throughout the menu. Visually, the design is inspired by a 1930s Japanese supper club run by “Madam Geisha,” so it is awash in era-inspired fixtures and furnishings, luxurious velvets, floral fabrics, traditional geisha patterns, textiles, and more. 4300 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; www.pyrophx.com
Take mom, dad, and the grad on a tour of cattle country, Italian-style, at Fat Ox, which is named after and features a menu inspired by the iconic Bue Grasso cattle and wine festival hosted annually in Northern Italy's rustic Piedmont region. Highlights include all-hand-rolled pastas such as the 25-layer lasagna, and premium fish and steaks cooked over a woodburning grill. The desserts are heaven, too. 6316 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.ilovefatox.com
Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Chopped alike, CRUjiente Tacos lives up to its TV hype. From its signature crunchy tacos to its inventive street-style offerings, plus its handcrafted margaritas and cocktails, each menu item tells a unique story and reflects the chef’s dedication to a top-tier epicurean experience. 3961 E. You’ve made it to Arizona. Now take time to experience the flavors, sights, and experiences of the regionBY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
Many restaurants offer the authentic cuisine of the region. If you’re looking to indulge in the flavors of the area, here are some of the top places to treat your taste buds to a taste of the Southwest.
At Old Town Tortilla Factory (6910 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.oldtowntortillafactory.com), choose a seat in either the 75-year-old adobe home in the heart of Scottsdale’s downtown or on its 1,400-square-foot patio, which is shaded by 100-year-old pecan trees. The popular destination—where they make tortillas by hand daily—is known for options such as its Southwestern Filet Mignon, Red Chile Pork Chop, Sonoran Meatloaf, and Achiote Ribs served with Southwestern coleslaw. Pair any of the meals with a selection from their menu of over 120 premium tequilas.
In Downtown Phoenix, Carcara (320 N. 3rd St., Phoenix; www.carcararestaurant.com), located at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, embraces the traditions of the Southwest, including
Sonoran influences and the "five Cs" of Arizona (copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate). These are celebrated in the handcrafted cocktails named after local landmarks and dishes that utilize fresh citrus and locally sourced meats that commemorate the heritage and history of the region’s cotton fields and citrus groves. Enjoy plates rich in flavor in an ambiance that looks just as good. The dining experience is set in lush greenery and warm earth tones, complete with a signature 14-foot tree in the dining room’s center and an outdoor patio lined with Cara Cara Orange trees—the restaurant’s namesake.
Meanwhile, at Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill (8300 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale and 7221 W. Ray Road, Chandler; www.ztejas. com) find dishes such as Aguachile Shrimp Ceviche, Mushroom Enchiladas, Adobo Chorizo Meatloaf, Ancho Fudge Pie, and a Southwestern-inspired brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. There’s also the ever-popular Prickly Pear Margarita, made with fruit from the prickly pear cactus.
You may recognize chef Angelo Sosa from television shows such as Bravo’s Top Chef and HBO Max’s Selena + Chef. The renowned chef now has a Southwestern restaurant in Phoenix, Tía Carmen at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (5350 E. Marriott Drive, Phoenix; www.tiacarmentdesertridge. com), which is named after Sosa’s aunt (Tía) Carmen. The menu features flavors imbued from a charcoal-wood fired grill that highlights the beauty and ingredients of the region. There is a selection of tostadas, the Ember Roasted Purple Yam, and the Tía Carmen’s Chicken Guisado, which is made with chicken thigh, castelvetrano olive, chimayo chile, garlic, and turmeric rice.
Fill your day by exploring sights and activities. From local plants to artwork to Southwestern souvenirs, there’s so much to experience.
There are several museums to explore, including Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (3830 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale; https://scottsdalemuseumwest.org), which features the art, culture, and history of the American West.
Heard Museum (2301 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; https://heard. org) showcases American Indian art and exhibitions, sharing the stories of American Indian people, including the Southwest’s native tribes, through first-person perspectives and exhibitions. It also has a popular museum shop.
And, view the plants of the region at Desert Botanical Garden (1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix; www.dbg.org). The destination is one of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and showcases desert plants, including rare and endangered species.
Another way to embrace the area’s Southwestern history is to walk through the historic swinging cowboy doors at Scottsdale's oldest bar, Rusty Spur Saloon in Downtown Scottsdale (7245 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.rustyspursaloon.com). It opened
for business in 1951, and today, the building is an officially registered historical landmark. It housed the Farmer’s State Bank of Scottsdale from 1921 until 1933, then the first office of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, followed by a real estate office, before becoming the saloon. The bank vault still remains and has been converted to a refrigerated unit to store beer and liquor. This Southwestern country saloon serves up beer, prickly pear margaritas, and live country music seven days/nights a week. Hungry? A Southwestern-themed lunch is served daily.
As you wander throughout the metro region, if you want to learn more about different areas, download and use the ListenUp app. Co-founded here in the Valley, ListenUp (https://joinlistenup. com) is the first AI audio app that tells you about where you are, wherever you are.
When you’re ready to browse or buy, there are many topnotch destinations for that, too. The Original Gilbert Ortega Gallery (3925 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale) has been nationally recognized since 1950 and features Native and Southwestern art, jewelry, rugs, pottery, and more.
Sunrise Jewelry & Gallery (7254 E. Main St., Scottsdale; https:// sunrisejewelryusa.com) also showcases a variety of Native and Southwestern items. The owners travel throughout the Southwest to curate a selection of art, jewelry, bolo ties, belt buckles, and fashions.
If you’d like to add some Southwestern style to your wardrobe, Mavericks (7237 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www. mavericksofscottsdale.com) is the perfect stop for Southwestern/ Western boots and clothing, as well as accessories such as belts, jewelry, and hats.
And, for all things leather—think belts (and buckles, too!), handbags, wallets, jackets, leather vests, and custom products— American Leather Company (7236 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; https://americanleatherusa.com) has been crafting high-quality items for 10 years.

When Arizona first became a state, five “Cs” were chosen to be on the state seal: copper, cattle, cotton, climate, and citrus. Here are six sensational ways to sip on Arizona’s most delicious of the Cs—citrus, of course!—all season long.
1. TROPIC LIKE IT'S HOT
Copious citrus, especially zesty lemon and grapefruit, collide with mangoes in this bold, bright beauty, resulting in a Sonoran Desert-meets-the-topics vibe. The fruits are complemented by cinnamon syrup, smoky mezcal, and spicy Chamoy Tajín. $16. Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, 1 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix; www.bitterandtwistedaz.com
2. VICI MARTINI
Veni, vidi, vici! At The Rosticceria, guests who enjoy this cocktail
will have “came, saw, and conquered,” a true work of mixology art. Shaken with vodka, mango, an Italian aperitivo, lemon, and orange bitters, and poured straight up in a martini glass, this rendition of the classic martini is then garnished with an orange wheel slice pierced in the middle with a sprig of rosemary, which is floated in the center of the glass. $12. The Rosticceria, 12811 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; www.therosticceria.com

3. SONORAN SPRITZ
Bold yet refreshing, aperol and sparkling wine dominate the palate in this orange dream, complemented by a hint of sparkling water and both orange zest and rind, which provide aromatics and a three-dimensional garnish. $13. Ironwood American Kitchen at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; www.scottsdaleprincess.com
Bright vegetal notes from fresh red bell pepper create a strong foundation for the complex layers in this drink, which intertwine with rum, mango liqueur, egg whites, and ample local citrus fruits. Choose between Blanco tequila or mezcal as the final spirit. $15. Bar Cena, 14202 N. Scottsdale Road; www.barcenascottsdale.com
5. SENNA SPRITZ
While orange juice and prosecco are in this cocktail, it is no mimosa! A harmonious fusion of fruity sweetness and sparkling effervescence, it also boasts watermelon liqueur, aloe liqueur, and Lillet Blanc, an aperitif with notes of honey, orange peel, and pine. It is finished with a sprig of rosemary lit on fire for added aromatics. $18. CALA Scottsdale, 7501 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; www.calascottsdale.com
6. RIO NARANJA
Spanish for “orange river,” the Rio Naranja was developed to take guests’ taste buds on a ride with lots of waves … of flavor. It features an exotic citrus offering in the tart yuzu fruit, which is blended with coconut, freshly pureed carrots, ginger, and tequila. $17. The Mission Kierland Commons, 7122 E. Greenway Pkwy., Scottsdale; www.themissionaz.com
