HOPPER&FUCHS and STOCKMANS ART BOOKS The Collection

We are a haven for our artists and we build a home for their books every day. The beauty of the people we collaborate with is what inspires us. First and foremost we care for the human stories behind the façade of our operations, which motivate us to create something together with you. The myriad of art practices challenges us to make each book publication a unique one. From painting to photography, from dance or theater and opera to architecture and sculpture, from drawing to fashion and textiles. We love to take care of the artist and build an extra stage and space for them within the book. What defines us is a sincere love of paper, typography and other serious matters in constructing the anatomy of the book. Our habitat is nested in high tech print technology with the smell of dripping ink in our workshop in Belgium, surrounded by the humming sound of printing machinery, boiling with activity. Innovative technology and artisanal skills fuse into our vision to create sustainable books for the future. Bruno Devos’ signature is ‘curating art books’ and this condenses our culture and philosophy in making books and experiencing the process. Lately we have been focusing on the deepening of our relationship with artists, publishers, architects, bookshops, institutions and galleries. We are proud to present to you our books. Always welcome to visit our ateliers in Belgium!

Stig De Block

Stig De Block Back to Back: From Backyard to Boulevard I spent 4 years, 9 months & 1000’s of miles on the dash, documenting an honest & intimate story about the lowrider scene in Los Angeles, California, USA. I can vividly remember the first lowrider event I attended in Los Angeles. I had driven out on a Sunday in October 2018 to attend an event called Sunday Funday. The concept is self-explanatory: Everybody comes together to have fun on Sunday, without any bullshit, with a common love for lowriders. It was located at the intersection of Rosecrans on South Broadway, on the border between Compton and Carson, in an industrial area—a very long boulevard with factory buildings and warehouses. When I first showed up in the early afternoon, there weren’t that many people out. But within one hour, the whole place was packed with barbecue vendors and people selling t-shirts and merchandise. I feel like there were 500 to 800 people there that day. And for me it was like, “Wow, all the

things that I’ve been interested in my whole life—L.A. culture, architecture, cars, and rap music—all come together in one place here.” ... This project is a way to participate in a culture that I grew up with, but never was a part of because of the geographical distance. By documenting it, I feel a form of participation. I pursue Back to Back to celebrate the lowrider as a muse and to accurately represent the people behind it. To those who are involved in the project: Thank you. I’m forever grateful and carry you in my heart. – Peace and Love. Stig De Block

Bruno V. Roels

Bruno V. Roels Trying to make it real, part 1 & part 2 “I think images are worth repeating.” Bringing many years of work together in a single place, here on the page, rather than on the walls of a museum or gallery, we can consider both senses in which Roels thinks images are worth repeating. In the obstinate and dedicated labour of printing and arranging serial, but different, versions of single images together; and then also with regard to the overall effect of bringing these iterations of themselves into the same space. But there is another sense in which we might find Roels’s work echoing not only itself, but that of those that came before him; and that, funnily enough, is in his refusal to take himself, or his work, too seriously. Just seriously enough, it seems, to invest time, effort, and skill into the production of his complex and subtly nuanced work, but never to the point, that, like Ruscha before him, (the artist who made Various Small Fires and Milk),

he finds himself unable to resist, and more importantly, to play with, the constraints of his own logic. A little like Dalí too, perhaps, who, captivated as he was by the potential of photography to document and catalogue the world, was also sure that this very capacity would result in us never being able to see anything in the same way, ever again. From ‘the subtlety of aquaria’ as Dalí himself put it ’to the fastest most fleeting gestures of wild animals, the photograph affords us a thousand fragmentary images culminating in a dramatized cognitive totalization.’ That too, is something worth repeating.

Ren Hang

Ren Hang 我母親 - For my mother Sheer visual poetry; the naked human body represented in fragile compositions Chinese artist Ren Hang’s photographs are painfully provocative, but also inward looking and dreamily surreal. His genderqueer compositions are explicitly erotic but never pornographic. Hang depicts the human body as an abstract form, often in idiosyncratic arrangements and perspectives, referencing and simultaneously overwriting well-known motifs and traditions from Western art. He combines iconic images of William Shakespeare’s dying Ophelia in a river surrounded by flowers; of Leda, daughter of a Greek king, and the Swan; and of female nudes seen from behind using a distinctive visual vocabulary that draws on abstraction, Surrealism, Dada, and both historic and contemporary photography. Ren Hang’s analog photographs use a playful, humorous visual language to

relate the feelings, desires, fears, and loneliness of a young generation in China. His works stand as symbols of the youth’s rebellion against the conventions of a restrictive communist regime in which nudity and sexual freedom are subject to government censure and control even up to the present day. Most of the people portrayed are the artist’s friends, but they remain unnamed and anonymous, and the images bear neither title nor place nor date. Although carefully staged, they are infused with an element of fleetingness and evanescence that is often the result of the artist’s quick way of working.Ren Hang’s photographs are a rare ode to human beings, their bodies, sexuality, beauty, and vulnerability.

Ren Hang (b. 1987 in Changchun, China, d. 2017 in Beijing) was a photographer and poet. His work has gained a growing posthumous following and immense popularity worldwide. Up to his death by suicide at the age of twenty-nine, Hang lived and worked in Beijing.

Jacques Sonck

Jacques Sonck Twice Twins, twice with a twist Jacques Sonck is a discrete and introverted artist who portrays our society in a very genuine way. He shows us our fellow citizens up close, his vision is tender yet sharp; his seemingly objective approach is sprinkled with a delicate touch of humour though. Each and every one of us could end up in front of his lens. Most banal physical appearances as well as peculiar profiles, all genders, skin colours, sizes, religions, shy individuals and fully aware ones; all at once they all sense this moment of strength. Sonck’s portraits are the outcome of street encounters, no other appointments in any form are made. Jacques Sonck makes his subjects feel totally comfortable, one can witness ephemeral deep contacts in full trust in

these remarkable portraits. He has this rare human gift of being able to approach strangers and ask them to open up to be captured on film. These encounters are furtive and truthful, they come to full bloom in particularly refined gelatin silver prints. This new publication was initiated by Jean-Michel Meyers (also the graphic designer of the book) who came up with the idea of focusing on one aspect of Sonck’s rich oeuvre, in this case, pairs. All kinds of pairs: couples, friends, twins, relatives, siblings, but in the end it doesn’t really matter which link exactly binds them. In this book we are triggered to know what exactly binds the two individuals, we are secretly fascinated by identical twins, by the sometimes bizarre duos, by the

mysterious relations. I’m pleased to invite you to dive into this specific world of binômes within the rich oeuvre of Jacques Sonck. – Extract text by Roger Szmulewicz, Gallery Fifty One

Marleen Daniëls

Marleen Daniëls From Sarajevo To Paris Thirty years of backstage photography in Paris and Milano Sarajevo to Paris, fashion or reportage, deciding on the title of a book is mindboggling. I call myself a documentary photographer that accidentally ended up doing fashion. The end of the ‘80s was an interesting and intense time in world history, and a particularly creative time in the world of fashion. As a young female photographer I was interested in both worlds. I was travelling for newspapers and magazines to the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris and to the conflict zones of Lebanon and Iraq. It was during the war in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the siege of Sarajevo that I matured in documentary photography, fortunately without being injured.

Thirty years later, when looking back, those two worlds – documentary and fashion – still define my work. Both are equally represented in my archives. This book, of my fashion work, is the first to be published. I called it Sarajevo to Paris because sometimes I would travel directly from one to the other. These two cities had a big impact on my life. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS – Marleen Daniëls Published by Stockmans Art Books

Lize Rubens Discobolus What is the weight of your Discobolus? I confess: this book is not about bodybuilding. Well, not exclusively. It is about the aesthetics and mental strength underlying the sport. About the pursuit of unattainable perfection, the emergence of ideals of beauty and their influence. About mental strength and inner focus. About everyone’s particular Discobolus. I alternate between conflicting thoughts. Extreme perseverance is often astonishing as well as alarming. I am fascinated by this paradox, many questions simultaneously fight for a place in my head. I project this idea onto our daily actions and thinking and ask myself: is overcoming inner insecurity a legitimate or deceptive driving force for achievement? Why is it that we associate so much happiness with the beauty we pursue? Does the gain in self-esteem outweigh

the damage to the body or psyche? Is our outer façade our daily stage performance? What lurks beneath the skin? In the quest for mental strength, inner focus and personal balance, do we also take into account the proverbial ‘backpack’ of experiences that have scarred us? And will that backpack get lighter in time, or are we like a whale that would collapse under its own weight on land... What is the weight of your Discobolus? – Extract text by Lize Rubens

Anniek Snoeijs Bloom “What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day,” said Pooh. - A.A. Milne Sexual transgressive behavior is a major social problem anywhere in the world and one that is terribly taboo. I had to deal with such a traumatic experience myself. For 7 years I did not dare to talk about it. Through making this book, I managed to talk about this experience more easily. ‘Bloom’ contains photos of my own healing process. The pictures show feelings I was dealing with throughout the process. The dark photos represent the somber and difficult moments and the light photos represent hope and healing. My book also shows 11 portraits of women who had to deal with sexual transgressive behavior too. Some of the women wanted to share their story in the book. The unidentifiable portraits depict the taboo surrounding this subject as where the plain portraits show

strength and courage. All the women who participated in this project played an incredibly important role in my healing process. Because of this, I have found hope and strength again. – Anniek Snoeijs

Karien Vandekerkhove

Karien Vandekerkhove Dear Light, dearest dearest Light Light doing what light does The work of the physicist might be summed up like this: to take the everyday, to make it strange, and then to recover the prosaic from the strangeness. Perhaps not exactly to make it strange, for it’s not up to physicists how the world behaves. To reveal the strangeness, then. What the physicist is asking for is a willingness to accept that there is strangeness in the everyday, rather than complaining “It can’t be like that!” The same might be said for the artist, and this collection of photographs by Karien Vandekerkhove shows why. The images could hardly be more prosaic in one sense. A glass of water on the table. Shadows on the wall. Reflections in the glass. Light doing what light does: that’s all. Offering clues, not all of them reliable.

... It’s no exaggeration to say that the shadows in Vandekerkhove’s images pose questions of the same sort. What is causing them? What do they imply about the world beyond our field of vision? If we turned around, what will we see? They too are hints of something missing, of the limits of our perception. They are traces made of light and dark, and we are mere spectators. – Extract text by Philip Ball

the underlying motivations, the origins of my perception of beauty and to reflect on my intention as a photographer.

“Growing up in Taiwan, the pressure to conform to a standard beauty in Asia was relentless and it took a toll on me physically and mentally. I was trying to be more like the perfect people I saw in the media, so that I could feel more worthy of love.

In 2019, I came across Enam’s Instagram profile and was enchanted by her charisma. I didn’t recognise her confidence at the time – being comfortable in your own skin. Then it suddenly clicked – I am a photographer. I create images. Images don’t create me. I wanted to do something. I wanted to show there is more. I wanted to make people feel good about themselves.

When I started to make photographs, I became obsessed with capturing beautiful people – in a society’s conventional ideal way. Later on, I realised I was compensating for my own struggle with a low self-esteem and began to question

I proposed to Enam to do a photoshoot and she invited her best friend Vanessa to join. I asked them to authentically express themselves. Throughout the day, we shot from outdoors to indoors, experimenting with our own various styles and props.

When it was a wrap, I was overwhelmed with joy and warmth, like I had spent the day playing with my sisters. I expressed my gratitude by saying, “Thank you for playing with me!” – Yolanda Y. Liou

Kaat Pype

Kaat Pype Stand-in “I’m only a stand in. After all’s said and done ... What a dreamer I’ve been. I’m just standing in” Kaat Pype has been making extraordinary portraits for many years. For this, she often works with an assistant, who takes the sitter’s place in advance, so that technique, pose and concept are well prepared. Pype has now collected all these stand-in images in a book. Each time the same man in front of the camera, not self-conscious. Each time the same man. Page after page. Each time the same man, functionally present, though never about him. As a result, the book of the stand-in raises questions. When does an image of someone become a portrait? Does the stand-in acquire his own identity through the hundred-plus images? Does he become a character? Does the viewer get to know something more about him? What we know for sure is that Kaat Pype is showing something here that did not want attention, something that would

not be shown. Her first book STAND-IN took shape at Katrien Anys’ work table, where the two-part cover took its current form. The handwritten, stand-in cover, surrounding the printed, bound cover. It has been a common thread in Kaat Pype’s artistic projects for years. he reverses roles, subverts perspectives. She decontextualises. STAND-IN is above all also an ode to love, a tribute to her husband.

With technical ingenuity and humor, Man Ray innovated the way clothing is depicted. His inventive processes and surrealistic winks have had a lasting influence on fashion photography and brought fashion and art closer together. Contemporary fashion designers also find inspiration in his work, in particular the Belgians with their predilection for surrealism.

The exhibition ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ (MoMu, 2023) unites his iconic photography and artwork with fashion silhouettes from the interwar period and the work of contemporary fashion designers and photographers who are inspired by his work. Karel Fonteyne

Karel Fonteyne Spell An overview of 50 years of contemporary and fashion photography Introducing Karel Fonteyne, one of Belgium’s foremost contemporary and fashion photographers. Since 1968 the artist has created an extensive oeuvre that has its place in the history of photography. His timeless visual storytelling relates to nature, darkness and loneliness, the inner world, and esotericism, while touching uncovered dimensions and layers. As a flagship figure in Belgian and international fashion photography, Karel Fonteyne’s career in that genre spanned more than 15 years. His rather experimental style gave rise to pioneering images that went beyond classical fashion photography. In 1996, he decided to give up fashion photography to develop once again a more personal work. Karel Fonteyne is a non-conformist. He plays with codes, deconstructs reality and

prefers the complex to the obvious. “I usually don’t photograph what I see but how my mind reflects it”. Spell reads like a journey through the photographer’s mind, jumping from photo to photo, from black and white to colour, from staged to spontaneous, from conceptual to fashion photography. The concept story has a direct influence on the variety of techniques. Concurrently homogeneous and heterogeneous, personal and universal, his work is an invitation to construct one’s own narrative. Karel Fonteyne’s images awaken the senses and transport us into another universe. They tell a story without words. 468 pages of the best possible offset printing techniques mastered at Stockmans Art Books.

Hanne Van Assche LUCKY / Udachny How a sleepy town in Siberia is enlightened and portraited by the snowy glitter of black iced diamonds In the far East of Russia lies a small mining town called Udachny. It is located in Yakutia, a remote region captured in the icy grip of winter most of the year. A frozen world of dense taiga and immense tundra zones — hardy pine trees, rushing rivers, and impressive mountains. Few people choose to live here, but those who do are proud citizens. Yakutia is known as the treasury of Russia. It is one of the world’s richest regions in natural resources. According to Siberian legend, God once spilled a bag of earthly treasures over this part of the country. A thick layer of permafrost covers large reserves of coal, gas, gold and – diamonds.

Kumi Oguro

Kumi Oguro Hester A brief physiognomy of images ‘so I assumed there would be, at some point, a door with a glittering knob, but when this would happen and where I had no idea.’ – Louise Glück, Faithful And Virtuous Night, 2014 One could easily establish quite a precise typology by looking at the images collected and placed in HESTER by Kumi Oguro (the word ‘image’ is used on purpose here, instead of photography or photographic work). Here, we can see – and this list is not exhaustive – female figures, parts of bodies, closed-off interiors that are often empty, abandoned or run-down, spaces, floors and wide-open ceilings, plays on natural or artificial light, the presence of mirrors that are concealed to varying degrees, trivial accessories such as fabrics, curtains, clothes, woollen

threads, cotton, chairs and armchairs that have become worn with use, small figurines, marbles or festive confetti, primary colours and other shades that are, frankly, lacklustre. But, proceeding in this manner, would we knowingly enter this world, of which Kumi Oguro shows us carefully designed and selected sections? A world – a story – that is equally about what she wants to reveal, but which she does not describe to us, and what we are encouraged to discover on our own. – Alain Delaunois

Florine Thiebaud

Florine Thiebaud Breaking Point An intimate, touching and female gaze on the refugee crisis in idyllic Greece Since 2016 I am working on the subject of exile in Greece. Here, “Breaking Point” is about people waiting for their papers. After my project “Exiles” (2016-2017) in Lesbos and Agios Efstratios, I traveled regularly on the island Chios and then Leros, Athens and Oenofyta, between 2017 and 2019. In Chios I quickly met Edmond and Feras. Both of my age and forced to live in Vial camp since a few months already, we were spending a lot of time together, and they explained to me the conditions on the island, the process to follow, and their hopes for the future. I met Mustapha at the same time and he directly introduced me to Soumaya, Sally, Razan and their family. They arrived at the same time than Edmond and Feras and were rehoused in a temporary apartment. Often invited at

their place, I followed their file processing, the positive answer for Athens, the school enrollment and their concerns for the future. Following my project in Lesbos, I witnessed the situation getting worse for people arriving in Greece. Going there regularly, I saw my contacts loosing hope and having to face a system seeking to discourage them from staying or going further.

Eva Faché

Eva Faché Que Deus Reparta A Sorte A tale of bulls and horses, prayers and family Eva Faché had never attended a bullfight before. Nor was it her deepest wish to do so. Yet when the student exchange program Erasmus brought her to Lisbon, it somehow happened. In the afternoon of the 17th of February 2017 Eva had an appointment with Antonio Vacas de Carvalho (º1991) in front of Campo Pequeno in Lisbon, Portugal’s most prestigious bullfighting arena. Antonio presented himself as the ‘cabo’ (captain) of the Forcados Amadores group of Montemor, a small town in the Alentejo region. Before they embarked into a conversation, he gently asked Eva to clarify why a young Belgian photographer was interested in bullfighting, and what would be the purpose of her documentary photo project. “I explained I didn’t know much about bullfighting. That I was curious

and wanted to find out how the ‘corrida de touros’ or ‘tourada’ as the Portuguese call bullfighting survived so many centuries, and why it’s still so important to him and his friends. That I was eager to photograph their reality, with an open mind.” This is key to Eva’s general approach: “When people decide to share their stories with me, I consider it my duty as a photographer to be open to whatever they come up with. I capture the raw, unfiltered visual aspects of a story. Analysis and interpretation are for later.” This is also how Eva started her project in Portugal, for which she would be immersed in the bullfighting world. Soon she would realise to what extent this is a world apart, with its own rules, hierarchy, rituals and realities. And how exceptional it was she had been given full access to it.

here is a pauze exactly at the heart of T the book. Here you find the story of the bulls, families, tradition and culture that takes place in the ring. This was printed on brown paper that resembles the colour of the Portugese sand.

Hanne Lamon

Hanne Lamon Until the End, I will follow you The photographer creates images that throw light on a fragile and intimate world For two decades, Hanne Lamon (°1982) has been making tranquil photographs of her everyday life that possess an unruly beauty. For Lamon, photography is a neverending process. For the artist’s book Until The End ___ I Will Follow You, she tried to reveal the foundation of her photographic production, which turns out to be fragile and contradictory. This fragile, precious gem was created on the basis of intuition and rationality, on a fast and unconscious, yet similarly deliberate and slow way of thinking. Some thirty ambiguous images were printed on wafer-thin paper, like photographic ice crystals in which time has been frozen. Tina De Souter gave the book a sober and elegant design, further enriched with a poetic text by Birsen Uçar - also known as the voice of the atmospheric dream

pop band Hydrogen Sea. The various production phases were carefully executed in consultation with Bruno Devos, the driving force behind publishing house Stockmans. Lamon’s poetic universe evinces great sensibility and melancholy. The photographer creates images that throw light on a fragile and intimate world. Lamon focuses on human body language, subtle touches and draperies as well as mysterious landscape scenes and abstract compositions. She experiments with film photography, specific types of paper and manual, graphic printing processes. Her choices are well thought out and attest to a longing for an artisanal and tactile beauty. The images are deeply rooted in personal struggles, turbulences and feelings of loss and hope. The photographer translates her struggles and conflicting emotions into a metaphorical and often dark imagery

that conceals and reveals. Even though the photographs emerge from the artist’s very own personal environment, they are nonetheless timeless, connective and universal. They suggest narratives and memories that possess a moving familiarity. – Sofie Crabbé

Oxiea Villamonte

Oxiea Villamonte Next of Kin Rock n’ Roll photography with a strong front woman. Next of Kin tells my story through three different generations of women. It’s not a linear one, neither a chronological one. It is an intertwining story where the past and the present try to connect with each other as well as disconnect. My identity is deeply influenced by my mother and how she has raised me. When looking in a mirror I see my mother staring back at me. While embracing these similarities, there still runs a fear through me of repeating similar choices. This path of finding my own identity has lead met to Chicago, the place where I was born. By using the archive of my mother when she was my age, I try to deceive the viewer into thinking we are one person. This feeling even gets reinforced in the similarity of the style and the people we choose to surround us with.

In the meanwhile my grandmothers’ voice echoes throughout the book in the form of questions right before she died. My grandmother and mother shared also this almost identical relationship as I do with my mother. Next to this search in finding similarities, I also try to find a way to distinguish myself. This distinction I find in my alternate self, that I call Zillah… – Oxiea Villamonte TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Binding Measurements Weight Language Number of pages

Bram Van Stappen

Bram Van Stappen RATIO How to portray 117 human beings in black and white, who turn their backs to us “A glance and a silent body, trapped in a common, but non-reciprocal situation.” – Michel Foucault, in: The Birth of the Clinic The work Ratio consists of 117 images featuring the same number of naked men and women photographed from behind. Bram Van Stappen made the series as part of the exhibition Back, organised in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2021. Over a period of six weeks, the photographer set up a field studio and invited visitors to undress and take place in front of the camera, yet face the opposite direction. Set in a generic surrounding and central composition, evenly lit and tightly cropped, the resultant black-and-white images display a form of (anti)portraiture that seems above all to be a study

in paradox. For how do we read this collection of head- and legless torsos that do not even face us? How can bodies this naked and exposed appear so walled off and private? So unique and at the same time universal? – Dominique Somers

Steve Dean Mendes

Steve Dean Mendes Emotions In Between Emotions A tear tore apart the mask This art book invites you to step in an emotional journey through Fine Art portraiture. Since 2018 Steve started working on this project. In a world where Photoshop creates the stereotype of perfect and flawless images, he decided to row against the stream and do just the opposite as a photographer. By deciding not to retouch his images and not to use makeup for his models, only using natural light in the studio, Steve Dean Mendes created a safe environment for his protagonists, initiating a process of removing all masks. In this series I prefer working predominantly with women and I try, through art, to facilitate the experience for self-discovery and acceptance. He captures raw and unaltered emotions and presents a story of love, joy, but also of pain, suffering and abandonment.

Inspired by the great Flemish Old masters and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he wants to show real human beings with all their natural fragility and beauty of the soul. Emotions In Between Emotions is a book about love and hope. This art book invites you to step in an emotional journey through Fine Art portraiture, while guiding you back to the roots of your own self… just like it did with Steve himself. The book was bound as a hardcover with pale, skin-toned linnen. Asymmetrically placed you can see an image that represents the inside of the book: comfort and consolation. The title was embossed into the cover with black hotfoil and invites the reader to touch and feel.

Paul D’Haese

Paul D’Haese Borderline Photographing markers on the edge of the coastline This new photo series was carried out during hiking trips along the northern French coast. He has focused on the borderline between the built-up land and the wide sea. The northern French coast is ‘marked’ by history: the Atlantic Wall, the liberation, the refugee camps. With this in mind, he explored all kinds of interactions in a non-documentary way: between land and sea, solid and turbid, internal and external, confinement and liberation. Paul D’Haese linked these themes to the search for identity, with the ‘borderline’ personality disorder at its extreme. Three years ago he conceived the idea of exploring this boundary line. Since then, he has followed a route from Bray-Dunes to Le Havre, approximately 350 km as the crow flies.

He crossed some fifty villages and towns, first by car, then by bicycle, and finally on foot, with the camera. Borderline follows Winks of Tangency, the project where he merely ‘touched’ the surface, the screen, the wall, the border. This time he ‘perforated’ the boundary line while photographing. As with his previous project, the exhibition is the subject of a publication: “Borderline”. Collaboration between Hangar Photo Art Center and Stockmans Art Books.

Paul D’Haese

Paul D’Haese Winks of Tangency Drawing a tangent in the architectural landscape In Winks of Tangency Paul D’Haese unites three recent photographic series and guides us in seemingly desolate landscapes. Hoaxing us is his way to engage us. Paul D’Haese’s photographs are ideal images. They do not require any text. Adding words to images is tricky, as words tend to evoke different images or even examples as justification and, consequently, explain the image in question based on a different framework. It is probably no coincidence that these photographs do not have titles, a code at most, enjoy the protection of a wide white framework and uniform colour treatment and have the rhythm of a series that comprises a project. These projects do, however, have titles. They have the ambition to totalise something, not externally, not an encyclopaedic or scientific series or quasi-infinitive total

of a collection, but a totality determined by the photograph and the process of photography itself. The cultural landscape, the built-up environment with all of its demarcations and flight lines, forms the perfect subject matter. – Francis Denys

Cuba Photography Missions

Cuba Photography Missions Where are you from? The Cuba Photography Missions and the idea of documentary photography Like photography itself, the Cuba Photography Missions is slippery, complex and multi-layered. It is self-defined as a project in documentary photography; it is a collaborative international exchange among institutions and artists; it is an educational initiative; it has resulted in art. As someone whose knowledge of Cuba comes, in part, from direct experience of the place and more from photographs of it, it has been my pleasure to take part in this effort, adding some historical context as well as a personal perspective. Towards, the end of this project, in the beginning of 2020, I took part in a symposium about it in Havana just before we all locked down. Now, a year later, I am writing for the catalogue. It’s dark March in Cambridge; Cuba and the person I was when I went there seem very far away.

As usual I turn to photographs and the ideas around them, hoping to figure out how I know what I do about Cuba and how that relates to documentary ideas and ideals. – Alison Nordström

Sam Asaert Sam Asaert Iran, Bardasht Tasviri, a photographic perception A photographic journey and perception of contemporary Iran A photographic perception of Iran by photographer Sam Asaert, who frequently travelled to Iran and spent long periods of time in this vast and mysterious country between 2014 and 2017. Being an assertive and open minded human being, the artist connected easily with the Millennial and artistic generation of Tehran. Living there in close contact with his contemporaries, this book brings a unique and warm testimony of the generations that will build the future of Iran. “This book is not about Iran. This book is a photographic perception of Iran. A book about Iran would imply the conveyance of ideas and notions about it. Yet within these pages, you will find nothing of the historic, linguistic, political, cultural, or

any of the broader context necessary to obtain substantial and deeper insight into a place as rich, as diverse, and as old as Iran. There are many different perceptions of Iran and, depending upon the reader of this book, the photographic representations of people and places in the following three chapters can be interpreted as adhering to any one of these.” TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Binding Measurements Weight Language Number of pages

Denis Rouvre

Denis Rouvre Sâdhus Mystical photography, Indian colors, where orange and black live together in harmony The Sadhus are enlightened by the captivating images of Denis Rouvre. The photographs go beyond the superficial beauty of the human beings, and their clothing. Black eyes, haggard, exhausted, possessed. Flowering beards on bodies adorned with bones. A bowl for a bowl and the saint will have sacrifice for mantle. The sadhus, eternal clichés of Hindu mysticism, watch over Indian imagery. They are projected guardians of the Ganges and its sacred waters, guiding the souls of the dead, impassive vigilantes reciting mantras before prostrate crowds or fasting in the wet belly of caves. It is their way of being in the world, in reaction to the world, to carry their

burden on a parallel path that Denis Rouvre admires among the Sadhus. In a form of nonidentity straining towards annihilation, they oppose a resistance to the inevitability of their birth. They are those who are born to die, to no longer be. Individuals who brave the ordinary, the common lot. Of those who populate the portraits of the photographer. Of those who by their will, by their heroic posture, rise among the gods. – Thomas Flamerion

Pascal van Loenhout UN/CUT Uncut, cutting edge portraits in black and white, and sharp haircuts … in style In UN/CUT, the second monography by Pascal van Loenhout, Pascal showcases his ‘unhairdressy’ cuts. No traditional preface in this book, but an uncensored version of his life story. A testimony of his road so far, including the demons that accompany success and the creative crises he had to overcome along the way. This open and honest approach creates an even deeper impact on everyone who reads the book. The work of the unconventional Antwerp hairstylist was photographed by Charlie De Keersmaecker and given a cutting edge design by Paul Boudens. Bright red hues against a backdrop of black and white images with pages that are cut in half at the book’s centre. The result is a timeless book published by Stockmans, that every fashion/hairstyle fan will want on their coffee table.

Pascal van Loenhout is an internationally acclaimed Belgian hair stylist and global creative director. As owner of the seminal boutique salon and academy Pascal van Loenhout Antwerp, he travels the globe to share his signature style of bespoke minimal cutting on iconic stages from the Royal Albert Hall to Milan, Cape Town and Las Vegas. Globally revered hair stylist Kevin Murphy – the inventor of ‘beach wave’ style and founder of the namesake brand – has worked closely with Pascal van Loenhout for years. Dirk Lambrechts

Dirk Lambrechts Flemish Light Clouds, a visible accumulation at some height above the earth’s surface Photographer Dirk Lambrechts’ book Flemish Light arose out of something that surrounds us. It is evidently the light and the sky, the tonality and the density of the Southern Netherlands. Impenetrable, on the one hand, and characterised by a specific luminosity on the other. The publication is presented in vertical layout, not as a panoramic book, as opposed to Sugimoto’s work for example, the book concerns cloud formations without a skyline. The image has been brought to the front and rises up, indicating an apparent statement concerning monumentality. While the images have been photographed and might be interpreted as capturing a given moment of something fleeting and perpetually in motion, they accomplish

something quite different. Rather, their effect is pictorial and the indefinable qualities and almost intangible nature of what is displayed lends them a certain gravitas. The image’s concept presents itself, yet is only partly disclosed, thriving mostly on what is suggested, while postulating itself within a specific framing that despite its ambiguity also wishes to instigate identification with the image. – Luc Tuymans

Mike Van Cleven

Mike Van Cleven Dear Motel The day would be a long one, and shit, was it hot… Mike Van Cleven (°1976, Belgium) unfolds the story that wants to be told. He takes you to intriguing settings where surprising tales slumber. His imagery is an escape from the ordinary day-to-day routine. It allows the viewers to get lost in their own thoughts and dreams, in what could be. His models are their own directors, only limited by their own boundaries. To his main characters, he offers space and time to search and feel. He only frames the moment, from a distance, with trust and experience. Call it voyeurism, allowed by the protagonist. Photographer Mike Van Cleven signs his personal work with Voncleef. Having worked for more than 20 years for international brands, he styled and directed photographs of many global athletes, artists, and models in mindblowing settings.

He lived the crazy stories; he went the extra mile - literally. He developed his craftsmanship and cinematographic style in the stopovers of his own road trip movie, creating images that demand time from their creator and spectator. It reflects his personal stance, unrestricted by society’s or clients’ expectations. Spending a lot of time in roadside motels on commissioned assignments, he started to photograph the scenery where he ended up. “To keep up with where I was, to capture these amazing but mysterious places, I found that I was living a story. A story I felt compelled to tell visually, without words.”

Nick Claeskens Bus Stop Unwind and explore the life and meaning of small family-owned touring bus services in Belgium ‘Globalization’, a commonly used word these days, is the reason of changing global landscapes. Larger firms buy small, authentic companies, the small companies that want to keep doing what they do, and don’t want to be bought by larger firms, struggle to compete, and eventually disappear. Nick Claeskens’ view on this phenomenon is displayed in his first book, Bus Stop. For decades, sons and daughters kept the bus company that was started by their mothers and fathers alive. For 2 years he travelled through Belgium to document their activities, to feel the atmosphere on board and to show who they are. What’s evolving and what could be lost in a few years. Safe travels! Nick Claeskens spent two years travelling with about 35 small bus companies that had been in the family

for years. He captured a phenomenon that is currently disappearing. The small and colourful bus companies are increasingly being taken over by large holdings. In a humanistic and social way he showcases their strengths and vulnerabilities.

In exchange for his services as a professional photographer he asked for a place to sleep, some food and transportation to the next place. The result is ‘Fools With Dreams’, a book about his social experience with over 3.000 photos of what he experienced that year, combined with interviews of the people he met and short essays about life on the road. The book comes with 32 separate photo prints. Fools with dreams offers an intimate look at the photographer’s life and that of the 62 ‘fools’ he met along the way. Another interesting aspect is that the book was partly financed through a crowdfunding campaign. Without trade and exchange there would have been no book.

The work of doctors and caregivers makes a deep impression on him. In March 2020, his life is at stake, but the healthcare workers pull him through in dire circumstances. Zeger is bursting with energy and to show his gratitude, he has organized an exhibition of portraits of doctors and caregivers at Ghent University Hospital and other wellknown personalities who have cooperated with him. His aim is to immortalize the portraits with accompanying stories and experiences in a luxurious photo book. He has already determined the title of the book for some time: ‘THANK YOU’.

The proceeds of the financial benefits of the project will go to “Habbekrats”, an organization that offers young people aged between 8 to 18, meaningful leisure activities, but also a listening ear, friendship and warmth.
