STOCKMANS ART BOOKS

The Collection

We are a haven for our artists and we build a home for their books every day.

The beauty of the people we collaborate with is what inspires us. First and foremost we care for the human stories behind the façade of our operations, which motivate us to create something together with you. The myriad of art practices challenges us to make each book publication a unique one. From painting to photography, from dance or theater and opera to architecture and sculpture, from drawing to fashion and textiles. We love to take care of the artist and build an extra stage and space for them within the book.

To play the role of printer-publisher is well established in the Stockmans DNA, as we continue to build on the vision and 16th century artisan legacy of Christophe Plantin. What defines us is a sincere love of paper, typography and other serious matters in constructing the anatomy of the book. Our habitat is nested in high tech print technology with the smell of dripping ink in our workshop in Belgium, surrounded by the humming sound of printing machinery, boiling with activity. Innovative technology and artisanal skills fuse into our vision to create sustainable books for the future. Stockmans Art Books stands for craftsmanship with a soul, with its history going back to 1875. Bruno Devos’ signature is ‘curating art books’ and this condenses our culture and philosophy in making books and experiencing the process. Lately we have been focusing on the deepening of our relationship with artists, publishers, architects, bookshops, institutions and galleries. We are proud to present to you our books..

Always welcome to visit our ateliers in Belgium!

Saffronaise

1 eidooier zwarte peper

½ kl saffraanzout

1 kl zachte mosterd 150 ml zonnebloem- of arachideolie 1 el gesaffraneerde azijn/citroensap

50 g zout of kristalsuiker 100 draadjes saffraan (200 mg)

Bart Stouten is a Belgian poet and writer who has made a significant impact on the literary scene of his country. As a radio personality, he has shifted his focus lately to writing, and since then, has become a prolific author of poetry, essays, and prose. Stouten’s work is known for its depth of emotion, clarity of language, and philosophical themes that explore the complexities of human experience. His poetry has been widely published in anthologies and literary magazines and has received critical acclaim for its thought-provoking nature. With his unique voice and talent for capturing the beauty and complexity of the human condition, Bart Stouten is a major force in the world of Belgian literature.

At a certain moment, Bart was invited by an organization to write seven verses that were inspired by Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze - an orchestral work by Joseph Haydn. Bart wrote text’s with a contemporary touch, approximately 250 years after the original. In this publication titled ‘Haydn, het Al en Ik’, Bart Stouten shares these writings and his feeling’s on the world today.

Thanks to publisher Bruno Devos, Bart Stouten was introduced to the artist Arpaïs Du Bois. Bart discovered that her personal and intimate, poetic and playful, reflective and still artworks matched his writing, and so they were bought together in dialogue in this publication.

Haydn, het Al en Ik is a testimonialbringing intellectual and artistic people from different eras together.

Lilith Kempynck aka, lilwaukee Universal Loneliness

Let me sprinkle my thoughts over you,and remind you of the sweetness of solitude.

“Universal Loneliness can be seen as a pocket book: a personal object that reflects my thoughts on life, my impatience, and the over-excitement for living and therefore fear of dying. Better said: a fear of being bored when you’re dead. This is a trip through my high frequency brain and the way it’s being filtered. It also engages with how to solely be somewhere and breathe, where there is nothing that keeps me busy but myself and to dwell in awareness of my own head space. It is a luxury to be in a state of boredom and it’s fascinating to create your own entertainment.

Universal Loneliness a collection of thoughts, poems and anecdotes. Why poetry? There was no plan for it, it just came into being. Because of the

way I’m thinking and writing, it naturally falls into poetry; with vulnerable texts. By showing a playful way of living, I sprinkle my thoughts over the pages, reminding the reader of the sweetness of solitude; a game you can play, a game for yourself.

My artist name is Lilwaukee. The named dawned on me when I was challenging myself to memorise all the countries by heart. During this frenzy, there was a US state called Wisconsin, and zooming in: Milwaukee. How well the sound of that town agreed with me! The -wauu and the -eeee, like real rollercoaster ride. Everyone calls me ‘Lil’, hence the merging. It has become an imaginary promise land and the name is an innerchild activation, back when nothing had to

make sense. The handwriting in my book is also an imitation of my younger self. To keep her alive.”

“Women’s tea is goed.”

“Ja? OK. Ge moet hem wel lang genoeg laten trekken anders smaakt ge dat niet.”

“OK.”

Ondertussen heb ik haar SPUITWATER -exemplaar klaargelegd. Ze bladert erdoor.

“Alleé sèg, merci, ik ga dat wel op een andere keer lezen hè.”

Zij maakt Women’s tea.

Stijn Tormans, Katelijne Damen, Ludo Abicht, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Johan Bonny, Lieve Joris, Guido Belcanto, Marie Julia Bollansée, Meggy Rustamova, Hendrik Vos, Chantal Pattynen, Liliane Saint-Pierre.

Sergio De Beukelaer (cat.)(draw.)

Discover the drawings of the creator of the fat canvas.

Leaf through Sergio De Beukelaer’s archive of sketches, designs and preliminary drawings between the years 1997-2023. (cat.)(draw.) presents the prequel to the final result. Discover how the artist plots his designs, and handles his archive of drawings. This book gives a greater insight in the heart of the matter behind his artworks. Sergio’s drawings expose him indiscriminately, hence why he has waited until 2023 to reveal them.

“What mathematics is to an engineer, drawings are to an artist. It is the seedbed from which an idea springs. When I am in a gallery or a museum, I want to gain insight and be nurtured. To paraphrase Umberto Eco, a work of art “is a machine for generating interpretations”. He believes that any interpretation can make sense and I agree

with him. A good image makes you think. That’s why I feel so good about research as the seed for an image.  An artist proceeds intuitively and then interpretations emerge. And that point where the artist touches the essence, that’s when it gets really interesting for the observer.”

Sergio De Beukelaer (cat.)

The art book as an artist’s statement. Discover the creator of the fat canvas.

Stockmans Art Books publishes the first monography of SDB, as an artist’s book. This publication encompasses the 25 year career of SDB, with highly personal insights in the restless mind of the artist. Sergio De Beukelaer’s practice is inspired by van Eyck, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly and pop art from the 60s. Since twenty years the artist has meticulously investigated the technical, conceptual and aesthetical possibilities to create his ‘fat canvasses’, which mark his position as a painter and sculptor in the contemporary art world of today. At first glance the artist uses only a reduced number of colours to bound his colour palette but in reality the colours are built up in such a large number of layers until the perfect tone is reached, that could only satisfy the artist. The paintings are always put in context with our contemporary way of living,

often dramatic, but also with a humorous touch. (cat.) has been acclaimed in Belgium as one of the best art books of 2020, from conceptual and graphic design point of view.

Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven 33 vrouwenreeksen

The art book as an artist’s statement. Discover the creator of the fat canvas.

Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven’s 754 pages book ‘33 Vrouwenreeksen’, brought together in two volumes

NICC 25 years standing up for artist’s rights

25 years dedicated to artists in our country.

The publication you are holding tells the story of 25 years dedicated to artists in our country. It is a snapshot that, in another quarter century, we believe will still be relevant.

In 1998, protests erupted against the closure of the International Cultural Center (ICC), an independent art space in Antwerp. Just a few weeks later, these well-organised protests led to the establishment of the New International Cultural Center (NICC).

Over the years, NICC has undertaken various initiatives to support artists. We co-founded institutions like Extra City and Studio Start (now known as Morpho). We actively contributed to the development of studio policies in Antwerp, facilitated social security for artists, and distributed

model documents. All of this was aimed at improving the socio-economic position of visual artists.

Filip Vervaet Sedimental Journey

Uncovering the black holes in our perception, providing a glimpse of another reality, the subconscious, the supernatural.

The last decades of the 20th century saw the proliferation of a tendency within the field of sculpture whereby many artists moved away from making autonomous or self-contained art-objects in favour of expansive multimedia installations. Although there are earlier instances of artists creating environments etc. it was in the nineties that a widespread adoption of installation occurred. This tendency was integral to a popularisation of contemporary art and prompted in part by the establishment of countless new institutions and biennials. While such inclinations remain prominent, recent years have seen the revival of traditional techniques and sensibilities, exemplified in the use of materials such as plaster, bronze and stone and the renaissance of figurative, representational sculpture. All these aforementioned tendencies are

combined in the work of Filip Vervaet; so one of his exhibitions typically consists of discrete sculptural objects framed by a sprawling, immersive mise-en-scène. Vervaet has a penchant for taking control of—and converting—the spaces in which his works are presented. This is manifest in the introduction of elements that are not artworks per se but which transform the site of encounter. Venues for recent exhibitions have been altered in a variety of ways; by covering the floor with huge quantities of sand or stones; altering light levels or draping dramatic chromatic curtains. Vervaet’s exhibitions are invitations to engage in tangible experiences that can be described as adventures in phenomenology.

Guillaume Bijl Multiples & Editions

From Souvenir to Relic, this complete series of Multiples and Editions feels like revisiting, Madame Tussauds’ style, Guillaume Bijl’s lifelong career as an artist.

The whole series of “Multiples & Editions” realized by Guillaume Bijl corresponds to his installations of a certain period: posters, small compositions, some “Sorry’s”, tableaux vivants or projects. Often, these multiples were created as an annex of temporary installations, or with the motivation to help non-profit organizations, or to cover the costs of installations in galleries.

After 40 years of practice, the Antwerp Academy was able to trace back about 80 pieces. In February 2021 the Antwerp Academy was exhibiting these multiples & editions and they are being published in a comprehensive book by publishing house Walther & Franz König in collaboration with Stockmans Art Books. The texts of David Vermeiren and Johan Pas put these

multiples & editions in context and reflect about all aspects of Guillaume Bijl’s oeuvre and career. The Belgian artist Guillaume Bijl (°1946) surprised the international art world of the early 1980s with his transformation installations. Galleries, art spaces and museum were radically transformed into ordinary looking commercial or entertainment venues like carpet stores, supermarkets or TV-Quiz decors. Apart from these, Bijl presents slices of dead pan reality as ‘situationinstallations’ and ‘compositions trouvées’. Lesser known, but widely distributed are the multiples Bijl created in the context of an installation or an exhibition. These objects seem extremely banal or kitschy but acquire a different meaning when seen as part of Bijl’s artistic strategy of staging and appropriation. Together with

the posters and books Bijl designed, all of Bijl’s multiples are collected for the first time in this catalogue raisonné.

Kasper De Vos UNO

“The boy scout of yesteryear has expanded his survival arsenal.”

The leitmotif of this oeuvre is undoubtedly nature. The romance of the artist who goes out and learns to look in the woods, but, as mentioned, takes his findings back to the civilised world. Even his food pieces began with an epiphany he experienced during a tree felling course in which a pine branch revealed itself to him as roast chicken. In addition, nature, the open air, is also the ideal environment (the world a pedestal) to present these works. When it is not on sale in shops, it often takes its place among the trees in Middelheim Park or on the Bijloke site where he went to school.

Nature is the primordial material that must be mined again and again in new ways. Be it the drawings of trees he brought back from Spain or the stone table that he and his compagnon de route Liesbeth Henderickx left behind on the Swedish

coast. Human beings leave their mark. The artist does this in a stylised way.

The boy scout of yesteryear has expanded his survival arsenal. No longer does he merely tie knots in rope or know how to light a fire. This book is proof that, over the past ten years, he has succeeded in connecting his fantasies and the images he gathers together into ever more overtly poetic gestures that can be transported both nimbly and conveniently in a backpack made of bark. In the hope of merchandising them to the inhabited world.

William Ludwig Lutgens The Bigger the Short, the Sweeter the Bottom

This highly curated artist’s book becomes a superfluous portrait of the Artist as a Young Fool

We live in hysterical times. Even when the world came to a screeching halt and the apocalypse did not announce itself with “lightning and thunder” or “archangel trumpets”, but through the silence of empty streets and lives treamed funerals, we were flooded with interpretations, opinions, soundbites, convoluted powerpoints and, as if things were not bad enough already, a newly invigorated moralism disguised in the prêt-à-porter rags of Art.

It was supposed to be a time of introspection but when the smog had cleared, we discovered there was no revolution in the air and yet we called our despair hope to mask our powerlessness. But amidst this turmoil of timeliness, we seemed to have forgotten this most untimely of all human endeavors; laughter...

... Using the formalistic conventions of an ironic heritage, he nevertheless attains the expression of something sincere. Like the philosophical idiot who did his utmost best to unlearn all the fallacies he was acquitted with since birth and now only knows he knows nothing, the artist made the world into his own theatre wherein he can stump around like a bull in a china shop with the grace of a prima ballerina. Forcing a pathway to possible exits by presenting us with the alloy of his observations, imagination and scattershot references. Not merely asking questions, which seems to be the hype in contemporary art nowadays, he is unraveling the framework wherein these questions originate. The image deconstructed by the story of its creation. Alternating between the power and impotence of the theatrical madness

at the end of the world as we know it William Ludwig Lutgens presents with his Comedy of Humours the dysfunctional family of man.

Why is it two men in boots keep trudging the mud in search of shards of the past? But a year has passed and on it goes, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes.

Finds have a strange hold over us. There’s a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we

intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there’s too much of ourselves in the object already. We don’t deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display.

The more trash we’ve dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. We’ve had to make our hands dirty and—like any good romance—half the pleasure lies in the hunt. So we go hunting for crap that’s out of place. Crap that becomes a find, simply because it was lost. A diamond is nothing very special in a jewellery store, but it’s everything when found among discarded fish.

Yet maybe the real reason for this endless trawlings for trinkets is another story altogether. Not that of a seventeenth-

century mariner tossing a coin into the Scheldt to buy a safe passage, but the belief that we’re not the ones that find the perfectly rounded rock, it’s the pebble that finds us. For all its muteness, it speaks to us.

Kaat Van Doren Waiting for: Golden Hour

Sunlight as a primary material in the oeuvre of Kaat Van Doren

This wonderful elixir of light is the thing that actually connects the immaterial with the material – that connects the cosmic to the plain everyday existence that we try to live in. Daylight. Nothing is more ubiquitous and yet many an artist has cursed under their breath in the search for a way to capture it. Indeed, which artist has not been fascinated by a unique shaft of light, a certain glow of the sun, or the shadows cast by some particular object?

It is the ambition of scientists to study light, to explain it and make it measurable. It is a primordial instinct of visual artists to follow and capture light and its beauty.

Although, as an artist, Van Doren is not loyal to any particular medium, carrier or material, she is constant in her search for light. Over the years, in works that the artist groups under the banner of

‘Waiting for, Accidents of Nature’, she has been occupied with painting the shadows that light leaves on her canvas. On other occasions she has made use of drawing materials and photographic techniques to capture ‘found’ shadows, such as those of a tree’s leaves. She invites nature itself to interact, such as in her cyanotypes, where, facilitated by a light-sensitive emulsion, the sunlight leaves a blue impression on the canvas. This gives rise to images that are literally touched by nature. These works, as abstract visualisations of time created en plein air, possess certain impressionistic qualities. Sometimes she also amplifies the power of shadows, by cutting out or perforating their contours. Holes in the shape of the shadow or perforations that let the light through: in this way, Van Doren experiments with ways of influencing, shaping or containing natural light.

Utilising a combination of such techniques, she created the artist’s book Waiting for: sitting, reading in the shadow of a tree, she allowed the sun to work its way into perforated, light-sensitised pages.

Wesley Meuris Verticality

Between imagination and reality: the conquest of a new space

Wesley Meuris’s most recent works focus on space and more specifically the way in which the machines that humankind sends into space – satellites, probes – live there. Through volumes, graphic works and seemingly abstract panels, the artist introduces a new perspective on the thousands of spacecraft that currently populate the cosmos. (...)

Wesley Meuris’s latest works – sculptures and graphic works – do not conform to these stereotypes; his representations are both more synthetic and, although he denies doing science, undoubtedly more analytical and therefore scientific. In his previous works the artist questioned the institutional architectures that surrounded us, presenting fictitious reproductions of them based on existing typologies and systems. He thus casts

a critical and somewhat ironic gaze at the phenomena of standardization at work in these architectures, and in doing so he (almost) always relied on a frontal approach. Here the deconstruction is less about the elements themselves –which retain their opacity – than about their representation in science and the imagination. For Meuris, it is a matter of shifting the gaze, of moving from a frontal gaze to a vertical gaze in the context of a fusion between humankind, the environment, nature and technology. This gaze would no longer position humankind at the centre of the representation, but would question the place it occupies in its immediate and distant environment.

Paul Casaer All We Can Get

Lipstick, peacock feathers and applauding men

All we can get, the title of Paul Casaer’s exhibition at De Garage, can be read in different ways. Inspired by all-you-can-eat restaurants, it denounces our human gluttony and desire for more. In today’s society, greed and unbridled consumerism guide our behaviour as individuals and as a species. Social media, advertising, trivial worries and boredom determine daily life.

In this postmodern world-as-a-funfair, we hardly know who we are any more. In search of meaning, we seem to be collectively stuck in our role of individualistic, self-centred consumers.

Our needs have been met, and yet a piercing sense of hollowness remains. All we can get refers to the meaninglessness of our existence and the painful lack of content, truthfulness and fundamental values. We wonder desperately: Is this it? Is this all we can get?

Monique Thomaes A VENIR

Thirty years of Monique Thomaes’ practice in installation, photography and video art

Since the early 1990s, Monique Thomaes has been investigating how the perception and experience of architectural spaces can be intensified, slowed down or questioned. For this she uses video, photography, light projection and reflective materials such as glass or mirrors. By uniting the parameters of building, visitors and artistic intervention, she heightens the sensations of and interactions between time and space. Her aesthetic strategy can be called purified and minimalist. The technological, sculptural or architectural interventions do not essentially transform the given space, but offer an alternative perspective. In the process, the functional dimension of the space is temporarily removed, making way for an aesthetic experience. In her questioning and fertilisation of space, Thomaes regularly uses linguistic

concepts. These provide her with the conceptual tools she needs to interact carefully with the environment and the scenography of the space. Because her working method is essentially sitespecific, it is also limited in time and space. The visual documentation of her interventions guarantees their continued existence. Therefore, the publication of this documentation, next to a walk through Thomaes‘ world of ideas, in a book form guarantees that her interventions come to life in another physical space—that of the book and the page.

Jonas Vansteenkiste & Joke Raes Transitoria

When two artists meet and start a dialogue, they end up with a book that is woven with the threads of their practices

Transit: the act or fact of passing through a transitional space, an intermediate space. Transitoria has a relationship with Foucault’s Heterotopia. He uses the term to describe spaces that have more layers of meaning or relationships to other places than immediately meet the eye.

In general, a heterotopia is a parallel space. Foucault explains the link between utopias and heterotopias using the metaphor of a mirror. A mirror is a utopia because the image reflected is a ‘placeless place’, an unreal virtual place that allows one to see one’s own visibility. However, the mirror is also a heterotopia, in that it is a real object.

The heterotopia of the mirror is at once absolutely real, relating with the real space surrounding it, and absolutely unreal, creating a virtual image.

Louwrien Wijers Tomorrow’s Language

Size doesn’t matter to represent Louwrien Wijers’ powerful writing, text and imagery into a powerful little booklet

Louwrien Wijers (1941) is a visual artist / writer, but she feels like a sculptor. After working with Joseph Beuys from 1968 to 1986, she sees, like him, writing, speaking and thinking as sculpture. Her main mental sculpture is Art meets Science and Spirituality in a changing Economy that she organized at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1990 and Kunsthal Charlottenborg Copenhagen in 1996. Until 2005, Compassionate Economy was her focus. It brought her the conviction that Satisfying not Maximizing, as Russian economist Stanislav Menshikov put it, is the trend in economics today. In 2010, she put her decree Don’t Lie / Don’t Steal / Don’t Kill // Grains / Vegetables / Beans as a solid foundation for a world economy, a world household. In 2012, the infl uence of food on our future became relevant with Cooking Together / Eating Together

/ Speaking Together, gatherings where Egon Hanfstingl taught how to cook fresh daily and where she had people talking to each other. “There must be a permanent dialogue about all human problems,” said Joseph Beuys. Her slogan became, Science is the Past / Art is the Present / Food is the Future. After almost 50 years in Amsterdam, she moved to Friesland in 2012. She created 100DagenBeuys (08.06–16.09.2018) in Ferwert, where people who had known Beuys well explained the many facets that Beuys had linked to his work Social Sculpture, such as Direct Democracy through Referendum, a Basic Income for All, the Expanded Concept of Art, Creativity is our Real Capital, and Everyone is an Artist. After 2018, Tomorrow’s Language and Saint Society became the topics of Louwrien Wijers. What the artists, scientists, spiritual leaders and economists

had said in 1990 she wrote on large panels so we can learn their language of tomorrow and thus shape our future, because “We live in language” said neuroscientist Francisco Varela in Art meets Science and Spirituality in a changing © Louwrien Wijers Economy. “Language is the medium in which we all exist.”

Stefan Serneels Sketchbooks

Drawings, travelling from Notebook 1 to 2 to 3... and eventually to notebook 6

I once wrote some poetry about a sleeping beloved. It features this particular verse: ‘Does anyone live there who exists when she closes herself? Everything is so conceivable in this head, I cannot get in and cannot get out’.

I remembered these lines as I was looking through Stefaan Serneels’ sketchbooks. ‘Everything is so conceivable in this head’ – it is a sentence that may very well apply to this work. But there is a crucial difference with watching the head of the enigmatic, sleeping lover, which the viewer ‘cannot get in’: through his work, Serneels does allow us to look into his head. And how. We’re getting in deep. But that doesn’t make the head any less enigmatic. Year after year, for many years, he kept a diary of his head. At least, that’s how we could interpret it. It goes without saying

that this diary, with all its sketches, is not merely an account of one’s tangible, recognizable daily existence. I rather see it as a chronicle of our unseen daily existence. And also, and most importantly,

I see how, in these sketches, the distinction between the two – the visible and invisible everyday, which I am presenting here as so seemingly selfevident – is blurred. And is obviously, at the same time, brought to the fore.

Yi Zhang Nothing

Less is less, we don’t need more.

Why we have to add so many things into one exhibition, even the space is good enough to be seen. I’m always trying to find out what interests me the most in the space, focusing on the things we easily ignore. Make the feeling strong enough to show to others. I don’t want to ruin the relationship which already exists in the space. Less is less, we don’t need more. Observe the space like an ant. The trails made by human beings in the world can’t last longer than what ants left behind. Staying, not to make, but to feel.

Yi Zhang would like Nothing more than to dissolve in the spaces which are generously offered to her. Whether this space is a sheet of paper, a post industrial building, a white cube or a street near the Antwerp Central Station, her drawings, in situ artworks or brick interventions merge organically with the natural origins or habitats of these spaces. Intertwining the horizontal and the vertical elements of different practices, Yi Zhang creates at first glance an new entropic condition, dissolving the visible into the invisible. But Nothing could me more deceiving, leading to a state of harmony.

Cindy Wright Eye to Eye

The tender mastery of fear

Eleven monumental, velvety apparitions float weightlessly in the deepest shade of black. Motionless and illuminating, they occupy the sea of space Cindy Wright created for them in the magnificent installation Eye To Eye (2020). Proudly and defiantly, the figures look us right in the eyes. They are staring at us. Once eyes, now there are only gaping holes. These arresting charcoal drawings depict human skulls. Wright presents us with our own mortality, fringed with a white border, like a memorial card. Nevertheless, death is her greatest fear. “The death of my loved ones, the idea of my own death and how it would affect them.” Standing eye to eye with our transience takes courage. Wright manages her fear as a key concept in her oeuvre. Wright’s studio illustrates this mastery. Her collection of dead animals and insects

reads like a macabre Wunderkammer and forms the basic material for her search for images to represent the fragility and vulnerability of life with the greatest intensity. It took the artist ten years to collect the desired number of skulls for Eye To Eye. She became fascinated by their origins and the way society interacts with human bones, evolving through time and culture. For Wright, her collection of skulls is something very natural. (...) The ten individual drawings were digitally combined by the artist to produce a new image: Unification. In it, the individual portraits merge to one universal skull. In its abstraction, the skull can become gratuitous and lose its confrontational value, which is important to the artist. Wright incorporates the field of tension between two display methods in the final drawing, in which the entire installation,

and if you like, humanity, is contained. This skull transcends personal reflection and has the capacity to symbolise a complete species: mankind. The world goes on even after our death.

Collect 11 high end printed skulls in one artist’s folder. Contemporary drawing at its best. €

Koenraad Tinel Tides

From myth to mythological sculptures

Tinel’s work comes crashing down into the soul of anyone who looks at it. And then it proceeds to shamelessly explore that inner being: it seizes you up like a toothless child on a landfill, seducing you all at once: like white eyes in the jet-black face of a woman, like the streamlined back of a large dog. It gives and it takes, it entices you and devours you whole. It turns you inside out.

‘I always say: La vie est terrible, mais elle est aussi terriblement belle (Life is terrible but it is also terribly beautiful)’, says Koenraad Tinel. The tiny giant surveys his surroundings with bright eyes, projecting a certain sadness. A fierce enquiring gaze, clearly wondering how his words will be construed this time. The evocative sculptures that have been our companions for several weeks already speak for him.

Karen Vermeren Reverse Geology

From the quarry to the street, from reality to abstract, from construction to deconstruction

The traveller is Karen Vermeren. She is looking at the fully operational opencast mine in Rüdersdorf, east of Berlin, where limestone is removed from the quarry for commercial use in the production of building materials. A tourist leaflet describes the rugged white lime landscape of the quarry as a ‘geo-highlight’, offering its visitors a geological window into time. “By way of a concluding remark, it is difficult not to touch on recent debates about the ‘geological turn’. Scientists from multiple fields have announced a new geological age, the so-called Anthropocene, succeeding the Holocene. They argue that in this new era, the single force influencing the planet is man’s impact on the earth, for instance in terms of affecting weather patterns and planetary biodiversity.[1] Although Vermeren does

not directly point to the disastrous environmental consequences of this mancentred era, her work raises questions about the various factors – physical, social, political, economic, cultural – that act upon and transform the earth. Instead of looking at the organic processes that have shaped the earth, as geologists do, she uses stones to consider the anthropogenic processes that shape our environment. This book can thus be read as a case of reverse geology, reading time not backwards, into the deep geological time of the past, but forwards. And it thereby poses the fairly urgent question of how artists can creatively and critically respond to a changing geologic now.[2]”

Denitsa Todorova Phosphenes (Seeing Stars)

Seeing without eyes

Denitsa Todorova takes her inspiration from everyday phenomena. Textures, shapes and patterns such as water surfaces, reflections, marble structures and firework explosions attract her attention as an artist. (...) Todorova, in turn, aims to give visual shape to this, and does so with an almost obsessive dedication. As if she wants, in a way, to return sensory impressions – the intensity of imprints – to reproduce them anew, express them once more, make them visible again. Her work can therefore hardly be called abstract: rather, it is especially concrete, hyper-sensory.

That radical dedication also finds expression in her quasi-ritual workprocess. Todorova prepares the delicate paper medium with dimly shimmering graphite powder, a time- and labour-

intensive process that produces various shades of visual density. She then goes to work with them in a negative fashion, by again erasing or blotting out the surface, tearing it up, damaging it or – only rarely – destroying it. In her homeland, Todorova enjoyed an academic training in painting, where she came into contact with the sgraffito technique, in which a line drawing is scratched into fresh mortar. (...)

The book was conceptually designed and printed to resemble the works of art of Denitsa. Her drawings are made mostly on thin paper that becomes more yellow over time. This concept was executed through the ink and papers used inside of the book. The black ink was custom mixed with silver to create a graphite-like effect.

There are five different papers inside going from dark grey, to light grey, to white, to natural, to yellow. The minimalistic grey softcover is wrapped in a folded poster of her work, printed on wafer-thin paper.

Michiel Ceulers Statements

Michiel Ceulers makes painting relevant beyond 2022, transcending abstract or figurative forms by exploiting materiality and energy into his canvasses

Just as I consider my writing to be, first and foremost, always about writing itself, so I came to understand Ceulers’ work as one long exploration of the possibilities of painting itself and a playful excavation of its tradition. If our artistic practices are in any way comparable — and we have plenty conversations on this topic — it might be in the way they are both deeply buried in their respective intertextualities. These paintings never exist in a vacuum. Motifs and gestures are generously borrowed from predecessors, dead or alive, because what is crucial is not the individual painting but furthering the conversation at the heart of the craft. Pictorial emblems accumulate meaning throughout the years. The painted bird is now no longer the same one as when it was painted ten years ago. History

needs to be repeated, ironically, sincerely, as tragedy, as farce, to find out what its significance might be. With every new painting one has the possibility of changing everything that came before. We need distance to see. As such Ceulers’ work is very much modern in the way Baudelaire defined it. As a continuation of their tradition the paintings safeguard the so-called eternal and immovable that is at stake here, but at the same time they also adhere to the other side of modernity; the transient, the fleeting and the contingent. This is perhaps most directly visible in the way Ceulers names his works.

Tom Liekens Once Upon a Time in the Forest

Back in the day, fairy tales took place deep in the illustrated forest

Tom Liekens (°1977) makes monumental paintings, woodcuts and collages. He is fascinated by the o en imaginary way in picturing fauna and fl ora in paintings, fairy tales, myths and films.

Tom Liekens’ ‘fairy tales’ take place deep in the forest, far from the civilized world. However, his large woodcuts do not tell children’s stories, but are in fact fairy tales for adults. They show violent or sexual scenes of characters who seem to be hybrids of both human and animal. The spectator feels like a voyeur of a dark fantasy world that is at the same time depicted realistically in a dystopian way.

Voyeurism, bestialities, sex, power and violence rule in this magical and mythological world. Liekens’ fascinating black-and-white canvases look both provocative and mysterious.

Tom Liekens Dog Years

The dog years are not over!

Tom Liekens (°1977) makes monumental paintings, woodcuts and collages. He is fascinated by the imaginary way of picturing flora and fauna in paintings, fairy tales or movies. The artificial representation of nature in natural history museums, cabinets of curiosity or hunting trophy rooms provide an endless source of inspiration.

His art showcases animal-like behaviour in humans and anthropomorphism in animals, thereby expressing the ambiguity of the relation between nature and mankind. His work is larded with references to art history and cultural history, while also implicitly confronting contemporary topics. For more than twenty years the artist has been putting himself in an entirely unique position in the art world. This richly illustrated book,

Klaus Verscheure Black is a Color

Contemporary paintings and Video Art. The color black has never been more red.

Black is a Color is the first overview of the multimedia art of Klaus Verscheure. The notion Monography gets a special connotation with the abundant BLACK that dominates. For centuries past, artists have paid attention to death and mortality, as well as to suffering and the causes of mortality through jurisdiction and torture, war and cruelty. Klaus Verscheure’s work might appear to be unrelated to the above, yet there is a clear link. The trees that he paints are not simply the subject, due to their pictorial and picturesque meaning. The mountainous landscapes are not there for the landscape and the dwellings nor for their architectural pretensions; he paints them because of what is no longer there. Absence plays a major role. People once hung from the trees, usually after a lynching. The mountains are situated in the Bavarian Alps and experts will recognise

the Obersalzberg. The Berghof, Hitler’s holiday home built on the foundations of Haus Wachenfeld, an idyllically situated chalet, was located in the Obersalzberg. The houses, whether they be spacious villas or modernistic or romantic-looking cottages, were each the scene of a crime.

Not only in his drawings and paintings but also in his video works the artist creates a tension questioning the why, why suffer, why cause terror to other human beings; may it be for religious, terrorism, the abuse of power, greed or psychotic reasons. The why, painted in Black.

Karin Hanssen Returning the Gaze

The subject of Karin Hanssen’s work is the act of looking the gaze to be precise

Perception is central to Hanssen’s work - how the figures she selects from old magazines and photographs were once perceived, how we see them today, and how the translation into paint alters them, liberates them. (...) The sense of time, a conflation of past and present, underpins all her work, as does the sense that a woman’s role is always conditioned by the society in which she exists… For Hanssen, freedom for woman is the space to work unimpeded and the ability to express oneself through clothes and hairstyles. It is being able to move freely in public and the possibility of mutability, of not performing a stereotypical role. From the beginning of her career she has wanted to disturb the viewer’s gendered expectations of what a woman can and should be.

‘To gaze implies more than to look at it signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze.’

Koen van den Broek Through Romance

Collage, music and history

Painting transports knowledge through the medium paint on supports, and therefore also the light of the place where the paintings were made. Light and colour are sensuous components in the oeuvre of Koen van den Broek, who lives and works in Antwerp, owns a studio on the South-Korean island of Jeju, and who already as child was passionate about life in California. Three times light—that must be lots of luck indeed, and the worldwide transport of works under the influence of another light generates a discourse about the luminous impact on painting and its perception.

Frans Van Roosmaelen Andoversium

Living greedily, painting generously. Coloured fields

‘Knallen’ (to let it rip) is an expression Frans Van Roosmaelen liked. In his paintings he allowed colours and strokes to rip with outright joy, in his life he went looking eagerly for extreme experiences. To his inner circle he would admit that he needed to be charged, certainly sexually, to be able to paint. Absence of such tension had repercussions for his art. Greedily he would explore the bleak realms of life which generously bore witness in his drawings, paintings and collages.

Frans Van Roosmaelen needed the high to be creative. What he sucked from life he gave back in restless generous works of art, charged with ecstasy and violence, primal urges, but also great myths of life and death.

Ulrike Bolenz Der Ewige Mensch

Drawing / Painting

The more you are confronted with the oeuvre of Ulrike Bolenz, the clearer it becomes that her art implies that one must learn to understand the chemistry of things, both literally and figuratively. Ulrike explains her technique as follows: “I film the model in my studio. Straight from the screen, I take pictures of the video. I then manipulate these video stills on the computer.

I then treat the images chemically and apply them digitally (using analogue and digital photographic techniques) to large transparent acrylic sheets about 2 meters in height. After this, I edit these plates and install them in the room. Finally, I connect the different transparent layers with paint. Her idiosyncratic art balances innovatively between tradition and experiment. Technique and diversity of materials

unmistakably play an essential role. Ulrike switches easily from one language to another, from one medium to another. In her complex art practice, she is constantly taking new paths.

The book is divided into two large parts. The first part is printed in full-colour and shows her large artworks. The second part of the book is printed in a dark blue Pantone colour and illustrating the story behind the artist and her work. In the book, there are two interventions with paper. One side of the paper is glossy and shows a sculpted work of Ulrike made of transparent, shiny material, the other side of the paper is matte and displays an artwork of rough matter. On the cover of the book we can see the artwork ‘Der Ewige Mensch’, printed on a papercovered hardcover. Wrapped around

the cover is a plastic dust jacket with the title printed on it, to further emphasize the contrast between rough and shiny.

Cindy Wright inspires Oog in Oog

Six Flemish and Dutch authors are inspired by Cindy Wright’s monumental drawings of dead skulls

Tom Lanoye, Jeroen Olyslaegers, Erik Vlaminck, Joke van Leeuwen, Peter De Graef and Fikry El Azzouzi start a dialogue with Cindy Wright’s drawings, bringing these skulls, that once were living persons back alive.

“Proudly and defiantly, the figures look us right in the eyes. They are staring at us. Once eyes, now there are only gaping holes. These arresting charcoal drawings depict human skulls. Wright presents us with our own mortality, fringed with a white border, like a memorial card. Nevertheless, death is her greatest fear. “The death of my loved ones, the idea of my own death and how it would affect them.

It took the artist ten years to collect the desired number of skulls for Eye To Eye (2020). She became fascinated by their origins and the way society interacts with human bones, evolving through time and culture. For Wright, her collection of skulls is something very natural.

This skull transcends personal reflection and has the capacity to symbolise a complete species: mankind. The world goes on even after our death.”

Pietro Finelli Œil

Painting as in a movie

Dear Pietro, every time I come to your studio, I find your research in painting progressed, or rather, as you would say, deepened by a little. This time I was impressed by how the human figures that appear in the paintings looks isolated from the context. Whether they are sitting in a living room filled with objects, or admiring a landscape, your subjects appear as silent ghosts, presences that not everyone can see. Do you think this last year of pandemic, of forced social isolation, has influenced this aspect of your figuration? The influence of the life in which we are immersed certainly had an impact on art as well and the way of expressing ourselves. However, we must be careful to identify the social status tout-court with that of the works of the artist who lives in that place. As you say, of course, the pandemic affected me as well as everyone

else. At a certain point, I worked on smaller works on paper, on short 6-second videos, which in some ways were affected by that situation, which in March and April last year, it was particularly acute in terms of apprehension and malaise. I also created a specific work as a testimony of those days. However, the paintings you have seen, even if designed and created during the pandemic, have their own internal path, which refer to my history, my path, my choices.

Luc Tuymans Catalogue Budapest & Warsaw

Tuymans’s haunted paintings come home in a post Cold War environment

A small but excellent and unusual catalogue of the work of Luc Tuymans, with guest writers who interact in essays with the work of the world famous Belgian contemporary artist. Wonderful selection of his work, for solo exhibitions in Budapest and Warsaw in 2007 and 2008.

Luc Tuymans, born in 1958 in Mortsel (BE), lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. Luc Tuymans is considered one of the most significant European painters of his generation and he has been an enduring influence on younger and emerging artists. Born and raised in Antwerp, where he lives and works, Tuymans is an inheritor to the vast tradition of Northern European painting. At the same time, as a child of the 1950s, his relationship to the medium

is understandably influenced by photography, television, and cinema. Interested in the lingering effects of World War II on the lives of Europeans, Tuymans explores issues of history and memory, as well as the relationship between photography and painting, using a muted palette to create canvases that are simultaneously withholding and disarmingly stark. Drawing on imagery from photography, television, and film, his distinctive compositions make ingenious use of cropping, close-ups, framing, and Luc Tuymans sequencing, offering fresh perspectives on the medium of painting, as well as larger cultural issues. €

Serge Vandercam Nuclear Times

Geometric Abstraction / Painting

Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery, in collaboration with Stockmans Art Books, releases a new book about the painter Serge Vandercam (1924-2005), ‘Nuclear Times. 1953-1963’. In 1957

Serge Vandercam and Piero Manzoni joined Arte Nucleare, the Italian avantgarde movement of Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo. It is only one of the highlights of Vandercam’s informal period, situated between 1953 and 1963. This lyrical abstract work forms the core of this publication and complementary exhibitions at the gallery, showing the evolution he underwent from Cobra photographer into figurative painter. The art research of historian David Vermeiren displays and accentuates Vandercam’s position in this highly connected and international art scene. Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery, founded in 2012 in Antwerp, Belgium,

displays lyrical and geometrically abstract artists from the following groups: Cobra, Art Abstrait, Art Construit, Formes, G58, the New Flemish School and the ZERO movement and contemporary artists in line with this visual language. Gallery owners Yoeri Vanlangendonck and Brecht Callewaert emphasize the importance and the contemporary character of the Belgian artists of the 1950s and 1960s.

Serge Vandercam was a Belgian photographer, painter, draftsman and sculptor. Vandercam joined Cobra in 1948 and from 1955 onwards he became known with his informal artworks. He regularly worked and exhibited in Italy and befriended artists such as Piero Manzoni and Cy Twombly, with whom he exhibited in 1959. He often appears in the overview of the informal research of the immediate post-war era –

as much in the international spectrum as in the will to promote a new Belgian artistic scene. His body of work is multi-faceted and frees itself with a liberation of movement and experimental research.

Jan Saverys Jan Saverys en de Groep Art Abstrait

Geometric Abstraction / Painting

Historian David Vermeiren worked with Saverys’s archives and offers us a look inside the Belgian artist group Art Abstrait, founded in 1952 by Jo Delahaut, Jean Milo and Pol Bury. Vermeiren’s text is supplemented with archival documents and illustrations of works of art by the Art Abstrait members. In addition there is a catalogue section with works by Art Abstrait member Jan Saverys from 1950-1975.

Saverys, son of the Leie painter Albert Saverys, was born in 1924 in Deinze. As a young man he enjoyed the privilege of getting acquainted with the cream of the Belgian art scene through his father. The Flemish expressionists, including Constant Permeke, Frits Van den Berghe and Gust De Smet, were friends of his father’s. Under his father’s wings,

Jan Saverys started as an expressionist, but he quickly started working in a lyrical and abstract fashion through his training at the Parisian Academy of La Grande Chaumière: turbulent but harmonious, sombre or bright colors and often with charcoal and colored chalk on paper. More than half a century ago he belonged to the artistic innovators. Together with painters such as Roger Raveel, Saverys founded the La Relève group in 1948. In 1952 he was co-founder of Art Abstrait in Brussels, the group of Jo Delahaut and Pol Bury.

Works in public collections and exhibitions: PMMK-Ostend, SMAK-Ghent, Venice Biennale and Sao Paulo.

Guy Vandenbranden Inner Circle

Geometric Abstraction / Painting

In Guy Vandenbranden, Inner Circle writer David Vermeiren explores the friendships between Guy Vandenbranden (°1926) and contemporaries such as Bram Bogart, Pol Bury, Gilbert Decock, Jo Delahaut, Jan Dries, Walter Leblanc, Pol Mara, Luc Peire, Roger Raveel, Michel Seuphor, Gilbert Swimberghe, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Dan Van Severen, Jef Verheyen and Mark Verstockt. A richly illustrated text and catalogue emphasizes the international character of the Belgian art scene between 1955 and 1980. This book offers an insight in the international network of the Belgian post-war avant-garde, from the perspective of Vandenbranden’s art and his close connections with avant-garde group Zero. Besides works by Vandenbranden, it presents paintings, drawings and sculptures by his friends, colleagues or what one would call: his inner circle.

The book, designed by Thomas Soete, has a very distinctive blue cover. The hardcover front and back are seemingly glued onto a paperback cover underneath. This results in a paperback spine combined with hardcover plats.

Marc Verstockt Marc Verstockt

Genesis and development of a form language

Mark Verstockt (1930-2014) played an essential role in the Belgian post-war art scene. Starting from the fifties, his work fits in with the European New Tendencies and the ZERO movement, which became evident through Verstockt’s inclusion in the exposition ‘Monochrome Malerei’ in Leverkusen, the first big ZERO manifestation in 1960. During the midsixties, Verstockt attained a geometrical visual language which was a permanent motif in his work from that point onwards. He became a respected defender of Minimal Art, with a preference for the square.

We are delighted to shed a new light on Verstockt’s oeuvre with this book and the clarifying texts by historian David Vermeiren. Verstockt’s evolution is explained, his international contacts are

discussed and the reader gains insight into his extraordinary and poetic work, from 1950 to 1985.

Yolanda Y. Liou Thank You For Playing With Me

“Then it suddenly clicked – I am a photographer. I create images. Images don’t create me.”

Taiwan-born, London based photographer

Yolanda Y. Liou’s photobook ‘Thank You For Playing With Me’ collaborates with Enam Ewura Adjoa Asiama and Vanessa Russell over the course of three years, photographically playing together.

“Growing up in Taiwan, the pressure to conform to a standard beauty in Asia was relentless and it took a toll on me physically and mentally. I was trying to be more like the perfect people I saw in the media, so that I could feel more worthy of love.

When I started to make photographs, I became obsessed with capturing beautiful people – in a society’s conventional ideal way. Later on, I realised I was compensating for my own struggle with a low self-esteem and began to question

the underlying motivations, the origins of my perception of beauty and to reflect on my intention as a photographer.

In 2019, I came across Enam’s Instagram profile and was enchanted by her charisma. I didn’t recognise her confidence at the time – being comfortable in your own skin. Then it suddenly clicked – I am a photographer. I create images. Images don’t create me. I wanted to do something. I wanted to show there is more. I wanted to make people feel good about themselves.

I proposed to Enam to do a photoshoot and she invited her best friend Vanessa to join. I asked them to authentically express themselves. Throughout the day, we shot from outdoors to indoors, experimenting with our own various styles and props.

When it was a wrap, I was overwhelmed with joy and warmth, like I had spent the day playing with my sisters. I expressed my gratitude by saying, “Thank you for playing with me!”

Kaat Pype Stand-in

“I’m only a stand in. After all’s said and done ... What a dreamer I’ve been. I’m just standing in”

Kaat Pype has been making extraordinary portraits for many years. For this, she often works with an assistant, who takes the sitter’s place in advance, so that technique, pose and concept are well prepared. Pype has now collected all these stand-in images in a book. Each time the same man in front of the camera, not self-conscious. Each time the same man. Page after page. Each time the same man, functionally present, though never about him. As a result, the book of the stand-in raises questions. When does an image of someone become a portrait? Does the stand-in acquire his own identity through the hundred-plus images? Does he become a character? Does the viewer get to know something more about him? What we know for sure is that Kaat Pype is showing something here that did not want attention, something that would

not be shown. Her first book STAND-IN took shape at Katrien Anys’ work table, where the two-part cover took its current form. The handwritten, stand-in cover, surrounding the printed, bound cover. It has been a common thread in Kaat Pype’s artistic projects for years. he reverses roles, subverts perspectives. She decontextualises.

STAND-IN is above all also an ode to love, a tribute to her husband.

Lin Zhipeng aka No.223

An exhibition catalogue with a Stockmans Art Books upgrade: includes sealed orange foil envelope and sticker

Lin Zhipeng is among the leading artists of the so-called generation of the eighties. Taking his name from a police character in Wong Kar-Wai’s movie Chungking Express, his work first gained notoriety through social media, online platforms and self-published zines. His diary-like booklets and photographs represent an emerging group in Chinese society that seeks to explore new boundaries in their lives.

Through Lin Zhipeng’s depictions of figures and nature mortes in flashy colours, flowers, interiors and nudes in soft colours, we see a new generation experimenting with novel pleasures unfamiliar to the conventional middle class world. The images are in an atmosphere of love, playfulness, erotism and joy.

This booklet is made for Lin Zhipeng’s fourth exhibition ‘Mystery Skin’ at Stieglitz19 Gallery, September 2023.

Man Ray Man Ray and Fashion

Shedding light on MAN RAY, with his fundimental, shapeshifting oeuvre

‘Man Ray and Fashion’ shows photos he took for leading couturiers such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, and major fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. With technical ingenuity and humor, Man Ray innovated the way clothing is depicted. His inventive processes and surrealistic winks have had a lasting influence on fashion photography and brought fashion and art closer together. Contemporary fashion designers also find inspiration in his work, in particular the Belgians with their predilection for surrealism.

The exhibition ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ (MoMu, 2023) unites his iconic photography and artwork with fashion silhouettes from the interwar period and the work of contemporary fashion designers and photographers who are inspired by his work.

This book was made for ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ with MoMu (Fashion Museum Antwerp).

Karel Fonteyne Spell

An overview of 50 years of contemporary and fashion photography

Introducing Karel Fonteyne, one of Belgium’s foremost contemporary and fashion photographers. Since 1968 the artist has created an extensive oeuvre that has its place in the history of photography. His timeless visual storytelling relates to nature, darkness and loneliness, the inner world, and esotericism, while touching uncovered dimensions and layers.

As a flagship figure in Belgian and international fashion photography, Karel Fonteyne’s career in that genre spanned more than 15 years. His rather experimental style gave rise to pioneering images that went beyond classical fashion photography. In 1996, he decided to give up fashion photography to develop once again a more personal work. Karel Fonteyne is a non-conformist. He plays with codes, deconstructs reality and

prefers the complex to the obvious. “I usually don’t photograph what I see but how my mind reflects it”. Spell reads like a journey through the photographer’s mind, jumping from photo to photo, from black and white to colour, from staged to spontaneous, from conceptual to fashion photography. The concept story has a direct influence on the variety of techniques. Concurrently homogeneous and heterogeneous, personal and universal, his work is an invitation to construct one’s own narrative. Karel Fonteyne’s images awaken the senses and transport us into another universe. They tell a story without words. 468 pages of the best possible offset printing techniques mastered at Stockmans Art Books.

LUCKY / Udachny

How a sleepy town in Siberia is enlightened and portraited by the snowy glitter of black iced diamonds

In the far East of Russia lies a small mining town called Udachny. It is located in Yakutia, a remote region captured in the icy grip of winter most of the year. A frozen world of dense taiga and immense tundra zones — hardy pine trees, rushing rivers, and impressive mountains. Few people choose to live here, but those who do are proud citizens.

Yakutia is known as the treasury of Russia. It is one of the world’s richest regions in natural resources. According to Siberian legend, God once spilled a bag of earthly treasures over this part of the country. A thick layer of permafrost covers large reserves of coal, gas, gold and –diamonds.

Kumi Oguro Hester

A brief physiognomy of images

‘so I assumed there would be, at some point, a door with a glittering knob, but when this would happen and where I had no idea.’

Faithful And Virtuous Night, 2014

One could easily establish quite a precise typology by looking at the images collected and placed in HESTER by Kumi Oguro (the word ‘image’ is used on purpose here, instead of photography or photographic work). Here, we can see – and this list is not exhaustive –female figures, parts of bodies, closed-off interiors that are often empty, abandoned or run-down, spaces, floors and wide-open ceilings, plays on natural or artificial light, the presence of mirrors that are concealed to varying degrees, trivial accessories such as fabrics, curtains, clothes, woollen

threads, cotton, chairs and armchairs that have become worn with use, small figurines, marbles or festive confetti, primary colours and other shades that are, frankly, lacklustre. But, proceeding in this manner, would we knowingly enter this world, of which Kumi Oguro shows us carefully designed and selected sections? A world – a story – that is equally about what she wants to reveal, but which she does not describe to us, and what we are encouraged to discover on our own.

Florine Thiebaud Breaking Point

An intimate, touching and female gaze on the refugee crisis in idyllic Greece

Since 2016 I am working on the subject of exile in Greece. Here, “Breaking Point” is about people waiting for their papers. After my project “Exiles” (2016-2017) in Lesbos and Agios Efstratios, I traveled regularly on the island Chios and then Leros, Athens and Oenofyta, between 2017 and 2019.

In Chios I quickly met Edmond and Feras. Both of my age and forced to live in Vial camp since a few months already, we were spending a lot of time together, and they explained to me the conditions on the island, the process to follow, and their hopes for the future. I met Mustapha at the same time and he directly introduced me to Soumaya, Sally, Razan and their family. They arrived at the same time than Edmond and Feras and were rehoused in a temporary apartment. Often invited at

their place, I followed their file processing, the positive answer for Athens, the school enrollment and their concerns for the future. Following my project in Lesbos, I witnessed the situation getting worse for people arriving in Greece. Going there regularly, I saw my contacts loosing hope and having to face a system seeking to discourage them from staying or going further.

“Breaking Point” comes from the time I spent with Feras, lively talks with Edmond, afternoons spent with Mariam and her sisters, explanations from Mustapha, empty days and some full along Diallo and Sylla, difficult times, wonderings in Athens, exchanges inside Oenofyta camp with Nazar and in Vial with Sadam, and from the time granted by so many people. I see the publication of this

book as a necessary achievement and allowing me to pay tribute to their resilience.

Cuba Photography Missions Where

are you from?

The Cuba Photography Missions and the idea of documentary photography

Like photography itself, the Cuba Photography Missions is slippery, complex and multi-layered. It is self-defined as a project in documentary photography; it is a collaborative international exchange among institutions and artists; it is an educational initiative; it has resulted in art. As someone whose knowledge of Cuba comes, in part, from direct experience of the place and more from photographs of it, it has been my pleasure to take part in this effort, adding some historical context as well as a personal perspective.

Towards, the end of this project, in the beginning of 2020, I took part in a symposium about it in Havana just before we all locked down. Now, a year later, I am writing for the catalogue. It’s dark March in Cambridge; Cuba and the person I was when I went there seem very far away.

As usual I turn to photographs and the ideas around them, hoping to figure out how I know what I do about Cuba and how that relates to documentary ideas and ideals.

Eva Faché Que Deus Reparta A Sorte

A tale of bulls and horses, prayers and family

Eva Faché had never attended a bullfight before. Nor was it her deepest wish to do so. Yet when the student exchange program Erasmus brought her to Lisbon, it somehow happened. In the afternoon of the 17th of February 2017 Eva had an appointment with Antonio Vacas de Carvalho (º1991) in front of Campo Pequeno in Lisbon,

Portugal’s most prestigious bullfighting arena. Antonio presented himself as the ‘cabo’ (captain) of the Forcados Amadores group of Montemor, a small town in the Alentejo region. Before they embarked into a conversation, he gently asked Eva to clarify why a young Belgian photographer was interested in bullfighting, and what would be the purpose of her documentary photo project. “I explained I didn’t know much about bullfighting. That I was curious

and wanted to find out how the ‘corrida de touros’ or ‘tourada’ as the Portuguese call bullfighting survived so many centuries, and why it’s still so important to him and his friends. That I was eager to photograph their reality, with an open mind.” This is key to Eva’s general approach: “When people decide to share their stories with me, I consider it my duty as a photographer to be open to whatever they come up with. I capture the raw, unfiltered visual aspects of a story. Analysis and interpretation are for later.” This is also how Eva started her project in Portugal, for which she would be immersed in the bullfighting world. Soon she would realise to what extent this is a world apart, with its own rules, hierarchy, rituals and realities. And how exceptional it was she had been given full access to it.

There is a pauze exactly at the heart of the book. Here you find the story of the bulls, families, tradition and culture that takes place in the ring. This was printed on brown paper that resembles the colour of the Portugese sand.

Jeroen Robert Kramer Une Femme

Beirut, years before the explosion. Who are you? Would you like to join me for a walk?

“Une Femme shows that ‘truth’ is irrelevant. Une Femme is an enigmatic and evocative story with a remarkable dénouement. It is also a beautiful exhibition, in which the present and the past are interwoven in Jeroen Robert Kramer’s poetic photographs of Beirut.”

This unique limited edition book is both a photo book and a novel. It is compiled of 170 pages of text and 170 photos. Designed in the style of the famous Editions Gallimard novels, Une Femme takes you on a road trip in the streets of Beirut, in search of meaning, in search of oneself.

Jeroen Robert Kramer (1967, Amsterdam) lived and worked in Beirut, Lebanon for more than 10 years. Today he lives and works in Amsterdam. After studying

French literature in France, in 2000 he started working in the Middle East as a documentary photographer for Getty Images, de Volkskrant, Der Spiegel, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and others. His photographs were used in articles on the Middle East, Africa, Afghanistan, Burma (now Myanmar), and the Philippines. Today he focuses on his artistic practice as an art photographer.

Sam Asaert Iran, Bardasht Tasviri, a photographic perception

A photographic journey and perception of contemporary Iran

A photographic perception of Iran by photographer Sam Asaert, who frequently travelled to Iran and spent long periods of time in this vast and mysterious country between 2014 and 2017.

Being an assertive and open minded human being, the artist connected easily with the Millennial and artistic generation of Tehran. Living there in close contact with his contemporaries, this book brings a unique and warm testimony of the generations that will build the future of Iran.

“This book is not about Iran. This book is a photographic perception of Iran. A book about Iran would imply the conveyance of ideas and notions about it. Yet within these pages, you will find nothing of the historic, linguistic, political, cultural, or

any of the broader context necessary to obtain substantial and deeper insight into a place as rich, as diverse, and as old as Iran. There are many different perceptions of Iran and, depending upon the reader of this book, the photographic representations of people and places in the following three chapters can be interpreted as adhering to any one of these.”

Denis Rouvre Sâdhus

Mystical photography, Indian colors, where orange and black live together in harmony

The Sadhus are enlightened by the captivating images of Denis Rouvre. The photographs go beyond the superficial beauty of the human beings, and their clothing.

Black eyes, haggard, exhausted, possessed. Flowering beards on bodies adorned with bones. A bowl for a bowl and the saint will have sacrifice for mantle. The sadhus, eternal clichés of Hindu mysticism, watch over Indian imagery. They are projected guardians of the Ganges and its sacred waters, guiding the souls of the dead, impassive vigilantes reciting mantras before prostrate crowds or fasting in the wet belly of caves.

It is their way of being in the world, in reaction to the world, to carry their

burden on a parallel path that Denis Rouvre admires among the Sadhus. In a form of nonidentity straining towards annihilation, they oppose a resistance to the inevitability of their birth. They are those who are born to die, to no longer be. Individuals who brave the ordinary, the common lot. Of those who populate the portraits of the photographer. Of those who by their will, by their heroic posture, rise among the gods.

Bram Van Stappen RATIO

How to portray 117 human beings in black and white, who turn their backs to us

“A glance and a silent body, trapped in a common, but non-reciprocal situation.”

The work Ratio consists of 117 images featuring the same number of naked men and women photographed from behind. Bram Van Stappen made the series as part of the exhibition Back, organised in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2021. Over a period of six weeks, the photographer set up a field studio and invited visitors to undress and take place in front of the camera, yet face the opposite direction. Set in a generic surrounding and central composition, evenly lit and tightly cropped, the resultant black-and-white images display a form of (anti)portraiture that seems above all to be a study

in paradox. For how do we read this collection of head- and legless torsos that do not even face us? How can bodies this naked and exposed appear so walled off and private? So unique and at the same time universal?

Charlie De Keersmaecker Down by the River

Endless Summer

Down by the River by Charlie De Keersmaecker evokes a melancholic feeling of an endless summer, a metaphor for a not lost yet youth. 18 images reflecting sunlight on the river Scheldt near the city of Antwerp, the soft skin and staring gazes of model like millennials echo a post ‘Catcher in the Rye’ noise. The black and white images are bathing in a timeless atmosphere. The protagonists are connected, not only by the landscape and the surroundings of the unworried water, but especially through the lens the viewer throws upon them, a perspective of coolness and undecidedness we all long for… Charlie De Keersmaecker is able to confront us with these short periods in life when we could still feel untroubled and unworried, and the future would always be bright and golden.

Pascal van Loenhout UN/CUT

Uncut, cutting edge portraits in black and white, and sharp haircuts … in style

In UN/CUT, the second monography by Pascal van Loenhout, Pascal showcases his ‘unhairdressy’ cuts. No traditional preface in this book, but an uncensored version of his life story. A testimony of his road so far, including the demons that accompany success and the creative crises he had to overcome along the way. This open and honest approach creates an even deeper impact on everyone who reads the book.

The work of the unconventional Antwerp hairstylist was photographed by Charlie De Keersmaecker and given a cutting edge design by Paul Boudens. Bright red hues against a backdrop of black and white images with pages that are cut in half at the book’s centre. The result is a timeless book published by Stockmans, that every fashion/hairstyle fan will want on their coffee table.

Pascal van Loenhout is an internationally acclaimed Belgian hair stylist and global creative director. As owner of the seminal boutique salon and academy Pascal van Loenhout Antwerp, he travels the globe to share his signature style of bespoke minimal cutting on iconic stages from the Royal Albert Hall to Milan, Cape Town and Las Vegas. Globally revered hair stylist Kevin Murphy – the inventor of ‘beach wave’ style and founder of the namesake brand – has worked closely with Pascal van Loenhout for years. He appointed Pascal to the position of ‘KEVIN.MURPHY global design director’ in 2014, a position Pascal continues to hold.

Steve Dean Mendes Emotions In Between Emotions

A tear tore apart the mask

This art book invites you to step in an emotional journey through Fine Art portraiture. Since 2018 Steve started working on this project. In a world where Photoshop creates the stereotype of perfect and flawless images, he decided to row against the stream and do just the opposite as a photographer. By deciding not to retouch his images and not to use makeup for his models, only using natural light in the studio, Steve Dean Mendes created a safe environment for his protagonists, initiating a process of removing all masks. In this series I prefer working predominantly with women and I try, through art, to facilitate the experience for self-discovery and acceptance.

He captures raw and unaltered emotions and presents a story of love, joy, but also of pain, suffering and abandonment.

Inspired by the great Flemish Old masters and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he wants to show real human beings with all their natural fragility and beauty of the soul.

Emotions In Between Emotions is a book about love and hope. This art book invites you to step in an emotional journey through Fine Art portraiture, while guiding you back to the roots of your own self… just like it did with Steve himself.

The book was bound as a hardcover with pale, skin-toned linnen. Asymmetrically placed you can see an image that represents the inside of the book: comfort and consolation. The title was embossed into the cover with black hotfoil and invites the reader to touch and feel.

Dirk Lambrechts

Flemish Light

Clouds, a visible accumulation at some height above the earth’s surface

Photographer Dirk Lambrechts’ book Flemish Light arose out of something that surrounds us. It is evidently the light and the sky, the tonality and the density of the Southern Netherlands. Impenetrable, on the one hand, and characterised by a specific luminosity on the other.

The publication is presented in vertical layout, not as a panoramic book, as opposed to Sugimoto’s work for example, the book concerns cloud formations without a skyline. The image has been brought to the front and rises up, indicating an apparent statement concerning monumentality.

While the images have been photographed and might be interpreted as capturing a given moment of something fleeting and perpetually in motion, they accomplish

something quite different. Rather, their effect is pictorial and the indefinable qualities and almost intangible nature of what is displayed lends them a certain gravitas. The image’s concept presents itself, yet is only partly disclosed, thriving mostly on what is suggested, while postulating itself within a specific framing that despite its ambiguity also wishes to instigate identification with the image.

Paul D’Haese Borderline

Photographing markers on the edge of the coastline

This new photo series was carried out during hiking trips along the northern French coast. He has focused on the borderline between the built-up land and the wide sea.

The northern French coast is ‘marked’ by history: the Atlantic Wall, the liberation, the refugee camps. With this in mind, he explored all kinds of interactions in a non-documentary way: between land and sea, solid and turbid, internal and external, confinement and liberation. Paul D’Haese linked these themes to the search for identity, with the ‘borderline’ personality disorder at its extreme. Three years ago he conceived the idea of exploring this boundary line. Since then, he has followed a route from Bray-Dunes to Le Havre, approximately 350 km as the crow flies.

He crossed some fifty villages and towns, first by car, then by bicycle, and finally on foot, with the camera. Borderline follows Winks of Tangency, the project where he merely ‘touched’ the surface, the screen, the wall, the border. This time he ‘perforated’ the boundary line while photographing.

As with his previous project, the exhibition is the subject of a publication: “Borderline”.

Paul D’Haese Winks of Tangency

Drawing a tangent in the architectural landscape

In Winks of Tangency Paul D’Haese unites three recent photographic series and guides us in seemingly desolate landscapes. Hoaxing us is his way to engage us. Paul D’Haese’s photographs are ideal images. They do not require any text. Adding words to images is tricky, as words tend to evoke different images or even examples as justification and, consequently, explain the image in question based on a different framework. It is probably no coincidence that these photographs do not have titles, a code at most, enjoy the protection of a wide white framework and uniform colour treatment and have the rhythm of a series that comprises a project. These projects do, however, have titles. They have the ambition to totalise something, not externally, not an encyclopaedic or scientific series or quasi-infinitive total

of a collection, but a totality determined by the photograph and the process of photography itself. The cultural landscape, the built-up environment with all of its demarcations and flight lines, forms the perfect subject matter.

Hanne Lamon Until the End, I will follow you

The photographer creates images that throw light on a fragile and intimate world

For two decades, Hanne Lamon (°1982) has been making tranquil photographs of her everyday life that possess an unruly beauty. For Lamon, photography is a neverending process. For the artist’s book Until The End ___ I Will Follow You, she tried to reveal the foundation of her photographic production, which turns out to be fragile and contradictory.

This fragile, precious gem was created on the basis of intuition and rationality, on a fast and unconscious, yet similarly deliberate and slow way of thinking. Some thirty ambiguous images were printed on wafer-thin paper, like photographic ice crystals in which time has been frozen. Tina De Souter gave the book a sober and elegant design, further enriched with a poetic text by Birsen Uçar - also known as the voice of the atmospheric dream

pop band Hydrogen Sea. The various production phases were carefully executed in consultation with Bruno Devos, the driving force behind publishing house Stockmans. Lamon’s poetic universe evinces great sensibility and melancholy. The photographer creates images that throw light on a fragile and intimate world. Lamon focuses on human body language, subtle touches and draperies as well as mysterious landscape scenes and abstract compositions. She experiments with film photography, specific types of paper and manual, graphic printing processes. Her choices are well thought out and attest to a longing for an artisanal and tactile beauty. The images are deeply rooted in personal struggles, turbulences and feelings of loss and hope. The photographer translates her struggles and conflicting emotions into a metaphorical and often dark imagery

that conceals and reveals. Even though the photographs emerge from the artist’s very own personal environment, they are nonetheless timeless, connective and universal. They suggest narratives and memories that possess a moving familiarity.

Oxiea Villamonte Next of Kin

Rock n’ Roll photography with a strong front woman.

Next of Kin tells my story through three different generations of women. It’s not a linear one, neither a chronological one. It is an intertwining story where the past and the present try to connect with each other as well as disconnect. My identity is deeply influenced by my mother and how she has raised me. When looking in a mirror I see my mother staring back at me. While embracing these similarities, there still runs a fear through me of repeating similar choices. This path of finding my own identity has lead met to Chicago, the place where I was born.

By using the archive of my mother when she was my age, I try to deceive the viewer into thinking we are one person. This feeling even gets reinforced in the similarity of the style and the people we choose to surround us with.

In the meanwhile my grandmothers’ voice echoes throughout the book in the form of questions right before she died. My grandmother and mother shared also this almost identical relationship as I do with my mother. Next to this search in finding similarities, I also try to find a way to distinguish myself. This distinction I find in my alternate self, that I call Zillah…

Mike Van Cleven Dear Motel

The day would be a long one, and shit, was it hot…

Mike Van Cleven (°1976, Belgium) unfolds the story that wants to be told. He takes you to intriguing settings where surprising tales slumber. His imagery is an escape from the ordinary day-to-day routine. It allows the viewers to get lost in their own thoughts and dreams, in what could be. His models are their own directors, only limited by their own boundaries. To his main characters, he offers space and time to search and feel. He only frames the moment, from a distance, with trust and experience. Call it voyeurism, allowed by the protagonist. Photographer Mike Van Cleven signs his personal work with Voncleef. Having worked for more than 20 years for international brands, he styled and directed photographs of many global athletes, artists, and models in mindblowing settings.

He lived the crazy stories; he went the extra mile - literally. He developed his craftsmanship and cinematographic style in the stopovers of his own road trip movie, creating images that demand time from their creator and spectator. It reflects his personal stance, unrestricted by society’s or clients’ expectations. Spending a lot of time in roadside motels on commissioned assignments, he started to photograph the scenery where he ended up. “To keep up with where I was, to capture these amazing but mysterious places, I found that I was living a story. A story I felt compelled to tell visually, without words.”

Danielle van Zadelhoff Survivors

An archive of survivors from the devastating AIDS epidemic of the late 80s

Survivors! The ‘AIDS Since the 80s Project’ commissioned artist Danielle van Zadelhoff to make portraits, which were first shown at City Hall in London in an exhibition created by the Project founders Adam Roberts and Paul Coleman. The subjects are people who have given filmed interviews for what will become one of the largest archives of its kind, documenting experience of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. There will also be a feature film to distil these remarkable stories.

This limited edition magazine features images from the exhibition, printed partly on Munken Polar Rough and on Arctic Volume. To stay true to the atmosphere of the original prints, a large size of 34 x 46 cm was chosen. The magazine comes in a plastic folder, with handwritten title and edition number. Only 100 issues

are available. “This project is close to my heart because these survivors are witnesses to our history. In these pictures I have tried to capture a reflection of their souls and strength, of the fragility of beauty in their imperfection: in search of the connection between the landscape of skin and the inner soul.”

Cornelia Stahl The Flaneur

A stroll through Antwerp

How to portrait an overshot city as Antwerp? Cornelia Stahl takes your hand and as a real flaneur you join her on a promenade through this historical city. The black and white photographs are printed in a duotone of black and grey and carry you around the city, wondering and wandering, from the historic harbor dockyards towards the city south, home of the arts.

“Do you remember - how, as children, we explored our surroundings step by step with curiosity and completely immersed in ourselves? We were simply guided by our instincts, all our senses and drifted away. In exactly the same way, I invite you to stroll through the wonderful city of Antwerp - follow me unobtrusively...”

Cornelia Stahl has wandered for years in the city of Antwerp, both with the eye of the tourist as with the eye of the resident. In this beautiful designed book by Reg Herygers of Undercast Studio, the photographer takes the right distance, highlighting details of City life and architecture through a black and white lens.

Welcome to the world of broken dreams and paradise lost Downtown LA, 2005, financial district, just around the corner, a few streets along, Skid Row Los Angeles, house of around 10,000 “lost angels”. Homeless, drug addicts, down-and-outs, psychologically damaged people on the edge of society of all ages, a melting pot of backgrounds, in an almost hopeless situation. Powerful, confrontational images by Italian photographer Alfredo Falvo, who spent months in this ‘dump of human remnants’. Falvo’s photographic practice focuses on an inexhaustible search for humanity, which he proves in this epic document of both misery and hope for a better future. 16 years later nothing has changed and Skid Row Los Angeles is still a ghetto for some, a refuge for others, but never innocent, never a shelter or safe haven.

Nick Claeskens Bus Stop

Unwind and explore the life and meaning of small family-owned touring bus services in Belgium

‘Globalization’, a commonly used word these days, is the reason of changing global landscapes. Larger firms buy small, authentic companies, the small companies that want to keep doing what they do, and don’t want to be bought by larger firms, struggle to compete, and eventually disappear. Nick Claeskens’ view on this phenomenon is displayed in his first book, Bus Stop. For decades, sons and daughters kept the bus company that was started by their mothers and fathers alive. For 2 years he travelled through Belgium to document their activities, to feel the atmosphere on board and to show who they are. What’s evolving and what could be lost in a few years. Safe travels!

Nick Claeskens spent two years travelling with about 35 small bus companies that had been in the family

for years. He captured a phenomenon that is currently disappearing. The small and colourful bus companies are increasingly being taken over by large holdings. In a humanistic and social way he showcases their strengths and vulnerabilities.

Maarten Mellemans Fools With Dreams

A year of living through trades, told by images, interviews and stories

The story: Maarten Mellemans gave up his job and apartment for a year and spent the year living on trade. In exchange for his services as a professional photographer he asked for a place to sleep, some food and transportation to the next place. The result is ‘Fools With Dreams’, a book about his social experience with over 3.000 photos of what he experienced that year, combined with interviews of the people he met and short essays about life on the road. The book comes with 32 separate photo prints. Fools with dreams offers an intimate look at the photographer’s life and that of the 62 ‘fools’ he met along the way. Another interesting aspect is that the book was partly financed through a crowdfunding campaign. Without trade and exchange there would have been no book.

Nico Dockx Ouragan Opera NOT FOR SALE

“Everything in this world exists in order to end up as a book.” — Stéphane Mallarmé

Chris Dercon, director of the Foundation Cartier, long-time friend of Nico Dockx, and one of the text contributors, warmly presented Ouragan Opera in conversation on archives with Nico on 30.09.2023 at the Be-Part Pirate Pavilion in Waregem. Included is an extensive interview with curator and art critic Hans Ulrich Obrist and a unique watercolour intervention by Rirkrit Tiravanija that splashes through this impressive (+1100 page) living archive, in a concept by Nico Dock and Bruno Devos.

Ouragan Opera by Nico Dockx is a book as a gift, it is not for sale.

WHY?

Nico Dockx knew from the start that this prospective catalogue should not be exchanged for money, in order to underline that art is not persay a commercial activity. Nico Dockx rarely sels books because art should be a gift sometimes. In a society that is swamped by financial logistics, we are fully behind this non-purchasable book; but we want to show it off anyhow...

This is a 3kg, +1100 page book, printed in pms 199, pms 2035, process blue and black with some pages layered with phosphor ink with a glow-in-thedark effect. Printed on Munken Polar 80gsm/300gsm, Ouragan Opera has a spine that is 5,7 CM thick and measures 26 x 25,8 CM. It is a numbered edition of 1000.

Maarten Inghels Gelieve in de kelder te kijken - Veuillez regarder dans la cave - Please look in the basement

A quirky collection of posters of lost cats, dogs, birds and other pets

It was my lover back then who taught it to me fifteen years ago. She collected posters of missing pets. She had them with cats, dogs and even a ferret if I’m not mistaking. Since then, I started doing it too and I came to love it. More specifically, I love the awkward typography, the heartbreaking pleas and the photos that tell us something about a person’s private life. After years of collecting, I decided to call the owners and ask them what happened to their critters. I wanted to know the story of pets that one day decide to go their own way.

When I installed a temporary ‘monument to lost pets’ on the façade of Unik community centre in Antwerp, with a selection of stories and posters, I met Jan Lemaire who was so generous in sharing his collection of posters. He brought in designer Jean-Michel Meyers,

who happened to have a brother Denis with, if possible, an even bigger collection, mostly from the streets of Brussels. Via these connections, I came across Nicolas Marichal, who had been removing posters from trees and electricity cabinets in Ghent for 10 years. The people behind these posters also told me unlikely stories of friendship and loneliness in the big city. I now suspect that there are more people out there collecting posters of missing animals all over the world. Rarely do we get a negative response with regards to taking them with us. There are plenty of duplicates in the area and from my conversations I now know that most animals are eventually found. Only once did I feel remorse, when I pulled a unique poster of a lost cat off a façade in Venice between two canals. The shaky handwriting was patently

original and not a copy.‘Nera paurosa, bella madonetta’ — anxious black, pretty little lady. I am going to call her now and pray that the kitten found its way back home.

‘GRAPHIC DESIGN of Scheld’apen’

Currated collection of experimental and punchy graphic design

From 1998 till 2013, a former railwaycanteen on d’Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp that was transformed into a cultural hub by youthful idealists, hoodlums and enthousiasts who called themselves Scheld’apen, was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring in those 15 years, before inevitably being demolished by city expansion plans. All those events produced a flux of visual communication, an enormous flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld’apen aficionados Benny Van den MeulengrachtVrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. Collecting items and building upon an already existing physical archive, they decided to pour a selection of works into a book: Graphic Design of Scheld’apen.

‘Graphic Design of Scheld’apen’ is the result of two years of collecting, three archival residencies at Het Bos (the new home of the still existing Scheld’apen organisation) and a short scanning residency at Frans Masereel Centrum. The book contains over 200 graphical works from a variety of different artists, a preface by Pieter Willems and texts by Roel Griffioen and Pia Jacques. All work was done voluntarily and ordering your book in presale helps solidifying its existence even more. The book launch will take place Thursday, May 18th at The Royal Academy of Antwerp, accompanied by an exhibition displaying key works taken from the archive. You will be given the option to have your book sent to you, or pick it up at the book launch.

The project is a collaboration between artist Benny Van den MeulengrachtVrancx, musician Bent Vande Sompele, Het Bos and The Royal Academy of Antwerp, under the guidance of Nico Dockx. ‘Graphic Design of Scheld’apen’ is published by Stockmans Art Books.

Het Lintfabriek Archieven 1982-2007

Commoning Club Culture in the Contemporary City

In this essay, I seek an answer to the following question: what could be the ingredients for a new wave of powerful, underground and sustainable club culture in the contemporary city? In other words, how could an adventure such as Het Lintfabriek be reenacted in our current time and space?

As I will argue below, contemporary club culture is subject to marketization, sometimes even to mere suppression. But I believe that club culture cannot be fully eradicated. Without succumbing to nostalgia, Het Lintfabriek saga could and should be continued in new ways. So again: what could be the ingredients for a new wave of powerful, underground and sustainable club culture in the contemporary city? In this essay, I combine my different existential roles

of sociologist, urbanite, musician and sympathizer of ‘everything underground’ in order to reflect on this issue.

Common spaces are the hidden chambers where aesthetic experiences tickle the participants’ imagination. Clubbers get charged with energy, and subsequently turn that energy into action. How many times would people, united in the heat of the moment, have nodded to each other in Het Lintfabriek, expressing their admiration for a certain artist, without the use of actual words?

Lacking a methodological apparatus to substantiate this claim, we can be sure that Het Lintfabriek – even to this day –constituted the birthplace of fresh ideas, love affairs, peer-to-peer collaborations, artistic ventures and wild dreams.

Club culture is more than entertainment; it’s more than time-passing and more than mere consumption. It’s a way of life and a political statement. Let’s unite and keep the culture alive, sustainably, in the contemporary city.

Christophe De Pelsemaker & Paul Ibou Letters as Symbols

International collection of lettermarks, an international selection from A to Z

The logos featured in Letters As Symbols are a combination of work made by the greatest of all time and of work by contemporary known and unknown designers or agencies. Looking purely at the aesthetics of these logos, they are all equal and have the qualities a good logo must have. Because Paul and I did not want to make a distinction between famous and non-famous designers, the logos are arranged in a non-specific way. The only order that is used is the alphabetical order per letter. This gives you the possibility of being surprised to see the same level of quality between some of the respected leaders and the less known designers.

– Christophe De Pelsemaker

The idea for the book first came about in 1991 thanks to Belgian designer Paul Ibou, a bit of a design legend of his time – yet one who’s perhaps not been given the recognition he deserves – whose work can be found in numerous design books and magazines including 1977’s Trademarks & Symbols of the World by Yasaburo Kuwayama and Yusaku Kamekura, Logo Modernism by Jens Muller and R. Roger Remington, published in 2015, and many editions of Idea magazine, Back in ’91, Ibou had already created the concept, cover and layout for the book; which draws together numerous logos from various submissions by the leading brand and identity designers of the time. However, the book was never released until now, since a collaboration between Ibou and fellow Belgian designer (though of a rather younger generation) Christophe De Pelsemaker was established

in 2017. Letters As Symbols takes a simple premise, showing logos each based on a single letter of the alphabet from A to Z.— 306 trademarks, logos and symbols, each of which is “a celebration of breaking and pushing the boundaries of typography,” according to De Pelsemaker.

Paul Ibou 1001 Owls

A scrapbook reflecting the OWL IN MY LIFE, dixit Paul Ibou (1939), a constructivist multi-artist and designer, living and still working in greater Antwerp

1001 Owls is a scrapbook, rough in its essential mission to present a myriad of roughly scanned images, drafts, logos, art works, collages, sculptures, covers, christmas cards and other playful pieces that came out of Paul Ibou’s creative mind. Composed at the age of 80 by the artist himself, this highly personal selection is casually thrown into the platform of a book. Let the owls surprise, seduce and inspire you!

PS: Paul Ibou’s name refers to the French word for owl, HIBOU, but also stands for Inventief Boek Ontwerper en Uitgever, hence IBOU.

Since the first day my career began in Antwerp 1962 as individual professional graphic designer and practiced plastic art, I frequently made use of my own mark. Afterwards a wide freely expressed variety of owl figures followed. These were reasonably easy to utilise for graphical work, advertisement and artistic expressions.

Opera Out of the Box The Cahn Years at Opera Vlaanderen

Opera Out of the Box challenges and questions the relevance of opera today. Meet Aviel Cahn

The breakthrough years of Aviel Cahn at Opera Vlaanderen have been collected in a book. As it turns out this is not your regular publication. Gesamtkunstwerk is a description often used, sometimes even leaning towards the cliché, but in the case of Opera Out of the Box it fits well. In 2008, Aviel Cahn is appointed as the youngest opera intendant in Europe at 33 years old. Concerns about his age are countered by the highest expectations about Cahn being a visionary personality and a magnet to address and attract highly talented artists and performers on an international level.

And so the story goes, ending in a 720 page book about his period at Opera Vlaanderen, the result of a consistent and daring practice, of out of the box thinking. This monumental book is housed in an

arty slipcase with three different covers. Opera Out of the Box takes the reader on a trip of seventy productions from the last decade. Moving from text to image, the book then turns into a 200 page photo gallery, a true feast for the eye.

This book is not a mere retrospective of Aviel’s period at Opera Vlaanderen, it guides you through the corridors of the house, but also through the mindset of the creative people behind the scenes. It shows the importance of the good eye and gut feeling of the opera intendant when casting the performers or stage directors: how sustainable crossovers with other creative disciplines build a legacy in the long run, how daring it can be to introduce a first timer in the process of directing an opera piece. The book is enchanting for the opera aficionado and

other passionate people in the performing arts scene, for both students and academics, but it also takes you onto an adventurous and compelling journey in a universe that is normally only discovered behind the stage.

Will Beckers The Outsider

There is a place where nature becomes art

Artist Will Beckers says that by opening himself up, by translating, reinterpreting and re-imagining his observations, he knows that he is connected to something big, which we call ‘our world’. Now, his connection between nature and art is so strong that the boundaries between them are blurred. We, human beings, are not meant to live as outsiders, but to connect. Yet a view from the outside does provide perspective and consequently helps us to know ourselves better. That is how real connections are established. Will’s art can help us understand the importance of the position that human beings occupy on mother earth and our relationship with nature.

A sketch of one of his works adorns the cover, embossed in copper hotfoil. The contrast between this large imprint

and the rough, linnen hardcover creates a tactile link with the nature works and sculpted works inside the book. The book was printed on high-end paper and the first edition was printed in 1000 copies. There is also a limited edition of 100 copies, which has inverted colours in linnen and foil and includes an exclusive print, hand-signed by the artist.

Roel Vandebeek It’s a Roel / Objet Portrait

A Roel you say? Discover 20 years of design by award winning product designer Roel Vandebeek

Design object or book? Sides with a slanted cut and black edge painting create a black object that is immediately recognisable as a book. Still it makes the viewer do a double take to make sure that first glance was right. Fragile due to the deconstruction of the classic book shape and yet also emanating a sense of mysterious power. Handle with care. In It’s a Roel, we are given an overview of designer Roel Vandebeek’s career. What makes his designs so extraordinary? What makes them special enough to deserve their own name: a Roel? The design method of his new project Objet Portrait perfectly illustrates this.

Roel designed two objects based on conversations he had with 9 Belgian public figures: Stijn Meuris, Tom Van Dyck, Guy Mortier, Tom Lenaerts, Phara de Aguirre,

Kim Clijsters, Lieve Blancquaert, Lize Spit and Wouter Torfs. For each of these nine persons he developed two objects, one practical and one art installation. One is functional, the other symbolic, but both express something of the soul of the people involved.

Joanna De Vos & Melania Rossi Nasi Per L’Arte, Palazzo Merulana

Nasi per l’arte is not about noses

Nasi per l’arte is not about noses. But how can we say that, when noses of all shapes and sizes will accompany you on your visit?

The nose itself, the nose as a form, is not the essence of the curatorial concept. Is a nose just a nose? René Magritte would ask.

The exhibition Nasi per l’arte was born from the encounter between two curatorial noses belonging to Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi. We met many years ago and found that our noses for art were connected somehow. The title of the show indicates that both our lives have always been directed toward—indeed dedicated to—art. The nose is a navigator, guiding us through life; a delicate vehicle that detects and determines. It narrows and

dilates at the same time, creating circular communication between the inner and the outer world.

Curious self-portraits, drawings, paintings, figurative and abstract sculpture, sculptural installations, reanimated cinema, video works, photographs, artworks that revive tradition and mythology or inquire into the human condition… these are the fragrances of the exhibition. Their perfume spreads through the rooms of the elegant Palazzo Merulana, wafting past the pieces in its wonderful permanent collection.

The most beautiful thing that could happen at Nasi per l’arte would be for all the artworks to breathe as one, creating a meeting that generates new meanings and new feelings. Two noses got together

and now, with nostrils open wide, they sincerely hope you will enjoy experiencing their and your noses for art.

– Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi

History repeats itself

Gerard Alsteens has been creating graphic and visual work all his life. His oeuvre is extremely broad and includes drawings, paintings, sculptures, book designs, stamps and posters. The quality of his graphic and visual work is beyond dispute: in 1980, for example, he participated in the Venice Biennale. And he is also the creator of an ever-growing collection of wondrous objects, painted bottles, panels and other curious creations. A collection that until now, unfortunately, was rarely or never on display.

Some time ago, I wrote a book about amazement. Among other things, I talked about the fact that we are all naturally curious and that, as children, everything seems like a miracle. Unfortunately, most of us lose that open-mindedness somewhere along the road to adulthood.

The fire of curiosity is gradually extinguished and there is little room for imagination or amazement in everyday life. The most interesting people manage to hang on to their open-mindedness. That is what often makes them so good at what they do. Gerard Alsteens has always kept an open mind, which is what makes him such an interesting artist and such a wonderful man.

Flemish and Belgian painting in the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba

Tracing a painting’s journey from Flanders to Havana

The history of the publication ‘The Flemish and Belgian painting in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba’ started in November 2007.

When I visited the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba in Havana for the first time, I was stunned to discover dozens of works by Flemish masters on the 5th floor of the ‘Arte Universal’ section. In collboration with the curators of the museum and the collection of Flemish and Dutch Art, Oscar Antuña Benítez, the Belgian embassy in Havana, the Rubens House and the city of Antwerp and also with the support of ‘Kunsten & Erfgoed’, Flanders State of the Arts, the Verbeeck Van Dyck gallery in Antwerp, we decided to invest in a scientific publication about this

unexpected collection. After a journey of almost 3 years, mutual visits and research in Cuba, Belgium and the Netherlands it resulted in this book.

The book was officially presented in 2017 in Havana by Didier Reynders, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, after it had already been digitally introduced at the Semana Belga, organized by the Belgian embassy in Havana.

Palace of Justice The Art of Justice

A monumental building made on a human scale?

Once the largest Palace of Justice in the world... a 19th century architectural extravaganza installed in the heart of the city of Brussels, today capital of Europe, looming over the people and imposing itself as a separate power. No building is more representative of Belgian genius and folly. Symbol of the exceptional wealth of Belgium at the time of its construction, it was intended above all to reflect the ambitions of this young democracy.

In 2016, on the eve of the 150th anniversary of the laying of its first stone and the 200th anniversary of the birth of its architect, Joseph Poelaert, we decided to pay tribute to this majestic edifice. Very soon, we realised that it was essential to maintain the international aura of the courthouse by calling on personalities and artists from all over the world to

comment on Justice-related themes: Climate Justice, Justice and Water, Justice and Women, Justice and Rights of the Child among so many causes that Justice must defend. This book is aimed as much at those who love the courthouse as at those who love Justice itself, defenders of its key role in democracy. May it long be an awareness-raising and reconciliation tool for future generations.

Erik Vernieuwe & Kris De Smedt A layer for my throat

Cooking with typography, spiced with a touch of opera

Antwerp 2014, Erik Vernieuwe and Kris De Smedt, a wildly creative food stylist and a renowned fashion photographer, go to the opera for the very first time. Blame it on Richard Strauss’ Elektra. They feel right at home in the limitless universe. It’s a match that almost instantly makes them part of the house, like pieces of furniture. They haven’t missed a production since Elektra. All those hours spent in the red velvet seats made their brains do a crossover to other creative disciplines. Research into the plays and the time and place they were originally set in brought to life historical recipes, adapted to the vegetarian and vegan now. During the creative process they kept thinking about a classic French and Saunders sketch, where the two brilliant comedians play demanding opera divas that grind Kylie Minogue’s ‘I should be

so lucky’ into a symphonic monstrosity. When the Dawn French character keeps asking for food, she says she needs ‘a layer for my throat’. Hence the name of the book. Brain food turned into real food in this unique publication that entwines the Aviel Cahn years at Opera Vlaanderen, with images made in the Antwerp opera house, and a playlist to accompany the recipes and exquisite design by award winning designer Mark van Wageningen of Novo Typo (Amsterdam). This publication is a vegetarian and vegan feast for the eyes that keeps both food and opera lovers interested. It’s red chili pepper hot, so to say.

Staf Pyl Picturale Dialogen

Passie in Glas en Lood

Some friends and relatives of Staf Pyl have taken the initiative to organise an exhibition in his city of Sint-Niklaas, Belgium and to publish a book as a tribute, in which we meet again the man and artist Staf Pyl.

A classical artistic education shaped him as a born painter and draughtsman, and a curiosity for art and culture inspired him throughout his life. He shows himself on canvas in oil paint, in his small designs, his drawings and graphics, in an intimate series of tonal works on paper, in ceramics, glass mosaic and sgraffiti, glass in concrete and stained glass. These various techniques shape who he is in the landscape of art.

Staf Pyl passionately felt that the brilliant palette of coloured glass was a challenge to show that which he could not say with words. He developed a rhythmically, constructive, visual language; where a new reality formed out of the darkness into the light.

Working with the hard, yet extremely fragile coloured glass, encased in rigidly pleated silver-grey lead, the artist managed to evoke poetry in a sparkling and vibrant palette of colours, from spiritual blues to passionate reds; an unruly game between the craftsman and the seer.

Baracoa, bakermat van Cubaanse cacao

A history of Cuban cocoa

The publication of this book is at least as adventurous as the history that precedes the book. The journey through time and the wonderful traditions and history of chocolate takes us to Cuba’s most eastern city, its first capital. With its 500 year history Baracoa is Cuba’s oldest city, with the footprint of Christopher Columbus. Via collaboration with various universities an attempt is made to stimulate the immunity and growth of cocoa plants. A new history…

In collaboration with chocolatiers Pierre Marcolini and Jitsk Heyninck, Cuban visual artist Maria Cienfuegos and Chocolate World.

Jef Van Campen 85

The painter as an Aquarius

The supposed overview book resulted in a selection of recent paintings by the 85 year old painter Jef Van Campen. His creative temper keeps on storming. “Painting is my lifeblood. I’ll only stop when my right hand falls off.”

Jef Van Campen is a man of few words, but what he says is spot on. That’s also how he paints: from a gut feeling, averse to every influence or fashion trend. He is an authentic artist and he wants to touch the soul of whomever views his canvases. Jef is an Aquarius. That’s his zodiac sign, but that one word says so much more. He has a passion for ships, for water, for the port, etc. He has painted maritime subjects his whole life. As a boy he jumped on his bike, rode around the port of Antwerp and was fascinated by what he saw.

Ward Nijs Wild

Wildlife, loaded with a painter’s brush

Already published in a Dutch, German and French version, Ward Nijs’ WILD is waiting to be adapted and published into an English version.

Going back in time starting with historical illustrations, the author draws and paints the main protagonists of today, the hunter, nature and wildlife, brought together in their colourful habitat. Action style drawings, combined with still life painting and portraiture are part of his practice in this beautifully and generously illustrated book. The powerful images of Ward Nijs bring you face-to-face with the animals that are so beautiful and show great strength.

Part of the message is trying to balance the contemporary hunter in his conservation strategy, where he helps to conserve

species, habitat and biodiversity. Preserving, guarding and protecting in this context are the key words and main goals to keep hunting sustainable in 2021 and beyond.

Piet Goethals Belgische cinema in beeld

A portraiture and who is who of the Belgian cinematic landscape in the early 2000s

A book that becomes an archive, that is how we look today at ‘Belgische cinema in beeld’, after wandering again through these images of the early 2000s. Time flies, sometimes escapes us, but humans stay humans and creatives stay creatives. The portraits taken and staged by Piet Goethals show us theatre and film directors, choreographers, artists, actors and musicians in surprising environments, sometimes in their personal biotope as in the cityscapes they once belonged.

Piet Goethals (born in Ghent, Belgium) is a master of History of Art and Art Philosophy and a bachelor in Dutch and English literature and language. He made his paper about Fiction and Reality in Film, illustrated by Zulawski’s ‘L’important c’est d’aimer’. After university he studied photography at the Academy of Fine

Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Piet Goethals works as a film- and art critic. As well as a photographer. He published and publishes photographs in several newspapers and magazines in Belgium and abroad.

Thierry Bonnaffé A Sensitive Touch

An academic approach

“I always strive for a well balanced, restful composition, in which the technical aspects get as much attention as the aesthetic ones,” states Thierry Bonnaffé, a Belgian artist who works in the tradition of figure painting established during the Renaissance and pursued until Impressionism. In his search for harmony and balance in the representation of feminine beauty and sensuality, Bonnaffé manifests affinities with postromantic art. His charcoal and sanguine sketches combine a rare delicacy and sureness of touch with creativity of vision. Thierry Bonnaffé comes from a multidisciplinary background. He studied architecture in Saint-Lucas in Ghent, Belgium. He received a degree in cinematography as well as studying drawing with R. Delrue. Although he continues to work

on architecture and film, Bonnaffé is most passionate about drawing and painting the female figure.

Maaike Ottoy Over poezen met vleugels en andere alledaagse waanzin

When chaos makes sense and creates a mad balance

A beautiful book about the wonderful world of Maaike, where cats have wings and surreal scenes are everyday life.

Maaike is 25 years old and has autism. Two years ago, she was not feeling well and ended up in the hospital. This was the start of a long series of hospital visits that eventually lasted 1 year. A difficult period that she bridged thanks to her family, friends and a new creative outlet. Since Maaike knows this, things are going much better and she is getting the right therapy. She has been making collages. Contrary to what you might think, the collages are very light-hearted, with a touch of humor.

With this book project she wants to bring a hopeful story to everyone who is going through a difficult period. She has been able to realize her dream with

this book and Maaike also wants to encourage other people to follow their dream. Everything is possible. Above all, keep believing in yourself.

Enjoy the colorful world of Maaike.

Nanna Reseke Taking a book for a walk

Offering my sketchbooks to nature

Taking a book for a walk displays a selection of Nanna Reseke’s sketchbooks and drawings made during her studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (2016–2020). Like the sketchbook, which is often carried around, the books and drawings presented in this publication were taken for a walk and documented in their natural state and in natural environments.

Drawing is the most direct way through which a thought or an idea can be visualized. It represents the first step towards creation either in the form of a scripture, a sketch, or a series. Sometimes intuitively as an incitement to something else, sometimes well thought out as an artistic medium in itself. Drawing can function as a thinking process, as a research method, and as visual output.

For the students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, drawing is a way of unlocking, discovering and questioning images and thoughts. Often the drawings do not leave the studio.

Publishing house Stockmans Art Books wants to make these otherwise hidden drawings visible through a biennial prize. The 2019 Prize Stockmans Art Books was won by Nanna Reseke (publication) and Yi Zhang (exhibition at INBOX, M HKA, Antwerp).

The edition took place on Wednesday May 22, 2019, and included jury members Philip Aguirre y Otegui, Arpaïs Du Bois, Bruno Devos, Paul Verrept, as well as chairman Johan Pas.

Nathalie Deboel Comforting Homes, second edition 2022 OUT OF PRINT

Interior Architecture

Comforting Homes illustrates the work and philosophy of interior designer Nathalie Deboel. She aims for soothing, timeless interiors with a well-considered palette of precious materials. The aim is to create a personal and familiar place that fits the clients’ individual needs. This publication visualizes a curated selection of residential projects in Belgium as well as abroad. ‘I strive to create a comforting refuge, a place that feels familiar and soothing to come home to.’

Throughout the book, it will become clear that Nathalie Deboel looks for balance instead of controversy. She aims for soothing, timeless interiors with a well-considered palette of precious materials. The choice of finishes can range from eclectic and exuberant to minimal and quiet. However varied the characters

of her clients are, the aim is to create a personal and familiar place that fits their individual needs.

An abstract play of shapes symbolize interior on the cover. On the back of the book, they become a play of lines, embossed in the linnen hardcover, creating a tactile link with the interiors seen inside the book. The book was printed on high-end paper and the first edition was printed in 1000 copies ans sold out mmediately.

Danielle van Zadelhoff’s monography collects a selection of photographs in a luxurious art book. The book is filled with 127 full colour pictures in a black background and this contrast makes the images pop out even more, high end printed in Staccato screening on Heidelberg LE-UV sheet off-set printing machines. The reproduction process on matt coated art paper, the use of intense black, the sharpness of the images in combination with the fragility of the photos necessitate the use of gloves, which are included with the book. The gloves not only protect the images but simultaneously create a sort of slow ritual for experiencing the artist’s work. With references to art history, from Old Master paintings to Cindy Sherman, Danielle van Zadelhoff captures the need in these fast and furious times to stand still, freeze

moments in time and to create comfort and hope for the homo sapiens. While depicting a range of different models, from children to the older generations, Danielle searches way to depict the human soul.

Tom Liekens Souvenirs Exotiques OUT OF PRINT

An Egypgian temple can also be a souvenir Liekens paints motifs of artificiality and collocation, and to this end uses a medium that itself is now doing no more than vegetate in solitary confinement. The exotic zoological-garden pavilions in the most recent paintings are thereby given an interesting allegorical function.

As a matter of fact, they talk about the painting itself. The Egyptian temple and the Moorish palace: these civic buildings dream of things foreign but are in essence places of imprisonment. They are artificial paradises (Charles Baudelaire) which only give the illusion of freedom.

The 19th-century middle class discovered with astonishment the fragments that had been handed down from ancient Egypt, and used them to build a colourful stable for elephants and giraffes.

Mohadjerin Freedom

Is Not Free OUT OF PRINT

This book is only political, presenting a voice for the woman who make silent revolutions day by day.

What does freedom mean? Through the lens of her camera and through a kaleidoscope of history of women in resistance in the Middle East and North Africa Mashid put together a multidimensional work which, through its varied formats such as photography, collage, text, and historical images, takes the viewer on a dreamlike journey neither bound by space nor time. Mashid’s work is permeated with the duelling nature of documentation and art, past and present, pain and joy, war and peace, loss and creation. This artbook focus on the private and public world of Iranian women who grew up after the Revolution of 1979 and on places of significance from Mashid’s childhood. For these women the political can no longer be separated from the personal - their bodies, their private and public life have been and continue to be

influenced by the Revolution.

Mashid Mohadjerin’s works is part of an Artistic Doctoral Research at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Antwerp, which started as a research on female freedom fighters and culminated in a very personal journey to her native Iran.

Lara Gasparotto Solstices OUT OF PRINT

A diary, ‘this is my life’, direct, energetic, framed, bathing, captured in soft emotions

Solstices is the fourth publication of the Belgian photographer Lara Gasparotto. Only 30, but already active since ten years and continuously presenting her work in the Stieglitz19 gallery in Antwerp, she has developed an intimate universe capturing moments of sweetness, companionship and melancholia. Like memories turning into dreams, the narrative of her pictures comes to life through the atmosphere coming out of the relation between light and silence. We read her pictures like we remember the seasons: the place and time do not really matter, moments become memories according to the way it affects us. Lara Gasparotto creates her own biotope of relatives and friends, in Belgium or Ukraine, and she moves on the rhythm of a wild flower, touched by nature’s elements. Investigating the art of photography, she recently has been

creating visible new dimensions on her photographs, evolving into mixed media artworks or collages. Going back to her original roots as a painter, the artist reinvents her own practice, where the final images still converge into her unique visual language.

An intimate love story in a boiling city. A collector’s item for photographylovers.

At first glance this small book is filled with blank white pages only; that is until you sneak a peek between the pages and discover a black and white photo series, hidden through the Japanese binding technique. Thomas Vandenberghe calls himself a diary photographer. Using a compact film camera with flash, his aesthetic style is the one of the private snapshot. His work deals with the psychology of the image as much as the psychology of relationships and is driven by longing, love and loss. His quick snapshots tell intimate stories that we are perhaps not supposed to see, And Thomas is not entirely sure about sharing his personal love stories. This doubt is present in the concept of his book ‘Bangkok’. The Japanese stab binding features sections that have not been cut, creating inner pages that can only be seen by peeking

in between. Having the photos on these inner pages requires an effort from the reader and makes the viewer an integral part of the intimate atmosphere the photo series breathes. The book comes with two polaroid pictures from the series. With a limited amount of 150 copies on Munken Print White, packed and sealed in a plastic envelope, this edition is a real collector’s item for collectors of photographybooks.

Tim Volckaert Wall Flowers OUT OF PRINT

The act of painting, making the figurative abstract in a luxurious and grand folder

Here and there Volckaert has painted over a part of a reproduction, thereby revealing the composition. I ask him why he has covered the hands of three ladies with red paint. “They’ve got blood on their hands, if you ask me,” he replies. “In my opinion, the arrogance of these renaissance people is responsible for global warming. When you see them posing like peacocks against a landscape backdrop, which represents land they have conquered or acquired in some other way, I take special pleasure in having them swallowed up by the background or smothered by an invasive landscape. I call these works ‘couple pieces’ because I try to recouple the figures with their surroundings, with the landscape or with the world. Only I don’t know exactly how I’ll do that yet. Having the landscape flow over doesn’t work.

Firstly, because you just end up with a pastoral landscape and lose that captivating confrontation. Secondly, the compositions are so well-balanced that they disintegrate if you simply paint the figure out. It’s difficult to tamper with it and at the same time make a good painting.”

I draw the artist’s attention to the reproduction of a painting in which he successfully allowed the female figure to merge with an exquisitely painted background out of which she occasionally seems to reappear. I would really like to see this work in the flesh.

Volckaert: “Maybe I’m looking for something like that. I don’t want to make punk-like, pamphletary works. Sometimes I think of Matisse’s tablecloth that flows into space and forms a sort of backdrop...

Sometimes I’m tempted to abstract certain parts. I love abstract art, but somehow we don’t manage to make abstract art that is totally unrelated to some anecdote or story... Sometimes I work with the shape of a jigsaw puzzle. Perhaps that’s a possibility: piece things together.”

Modemuseum Hasselt Activewear OUT OF PRINT

Fashion

More than ever before, fashion is finding inspiration in the world of sports. Cycling shorts, hoodies and sneakers are conquering the catwalk. Designers experiment with tulle and with technical materials such as neoprene and elastane. Fashion houses enter into lucrative collabs with athletes and sports labels. Activewear explores this exciting relationship between fashion and sports. It examines the fascinating divide between sports clothing, streetwear and activewear, and invites the reader to reflect on why this success story is taking place.

Elodie Ouédraogo and Olivia Borlée, Belgian athletics stars and guest curators of the exhibition that accompanies this publication, united their passion for fashion and sports in 2016, launching their

42|54 label. Immortalized by the camera lens of Ronald Stoops, they are not only the face of activewear in Belgium, but also of the exhibition and this richly illustrated magazine. Together with other designers, fashion-conscious musicians, fashion actors and international researchers and journalists, they offer a glimpse into the wonderful world of activewear.
