Clearing the Way A new year, a new to-do list
Mini boArD MAMbA forever “Omg! is it true about Kobe??!” seemed like a strange post to read the day after leBron passed his scoring record. so i googled Kobe and nothing was trending. There was one article from New York Post. i didn’t really want to show luis. i don’t think i’ll ever forget that we were watching Empire Strikes Back because he had just been talking about han solo’s hair and i had been about to say that i can’t believe harrison ford is alive and carrie fisher is not. i shared the article, but not the thought. my uncle, who never shied away from asking luis how he was able to be a Kobe fan wrote some nice words. “i strongly believe in second chances. ... Kobe not only continued to thrill basketball fans

filtering A connection Betty loves to play with “chapsnat” as she calls it. One day before school, there was a filter to age your face. When she laughed at her reflection, i couldn’t believe how much she looked like her great-grandmother. i took a bunch of screenshots. Betty really does have light eyes and an underbite like my grandma (and almost the same birthday— July 8 and 11), but they were practically identical when Betty genuinely smiled. —MV

terrAin of boreDoM The first week back to school after the new year, i decided to keep track of the license plates we drove past. This map is from the first day, though Delaware and D.c. should also be highlighted. We saw 26 plates, including hawaii. While there are michigan and indiana plates in our neighborhood, i think the amount of out-of-state plates in other parts of Brooklyn is an indicator of how much renovation and gentrification has taken hold in those neighborhoods. —MV

For most of the time we’ve had this office, we haven’t been able to see its floor

Paints over here, photo equipment over there, the room houses materials for just about every kind of project

after many attempts, it was time to organize it all for real One 7-foot tall set of chrome shelving seems to have been the last kick in the butt this office needed. I mean, that and a serious goal in mind beyond being able to walk to the desk. There is a giant wall to shoot against without all the junk in the way.
The room has always been cluttered. When the basement flooded in January 2019, I had to move even more boxes into the office. The same way our list of projects includes podcasts, videos, recap issues, and side projects, the actual space includes a litter box, the dog pen, a photo studio, boxes of fabric, kids’ art supplies, old magazines, unread newspapers... Weeks of going through boxes led up to buying the new shelves. Then one day I took everything from the office and moved it to the living room to start over. Four days later, I think we’re ready to accomplish all those projects this year. —Madeline

was my most liked and retweeted illustration of the year. My personal favorites are my take on Tyrion (Game of Thrones) and Enfys Nest (Solo). All are 11x17 comic art board with Micron pens with Pentel brush inks.
sketching a plan
Inspired to draw more often, Luis walks us through what he created in 2019 and what he plans to accomplish this year I’m always incredibly inspired by the quick sketches artists do at New York Comic Con. This year, I decided I would do 5-minute sketches at my desk every day. I came out of the box very strong with one week devoted to Into The Spider-Verse, and another devoted to Batman villains. Since then, the results have been slightly more sporadic. Between the holidays and me being more critical of my art (which defeats the entire practice of quick sketches), I haven’t finished a full week since. At the peak of me feeling bad about my artwork, I came home and realized my wife had not only carved out a new work space for me, but also hung up some of my art. It was a great kick in the ass to realize I should stop criticizing myself. As we start 2020, I have relatively lofty goals for my art. I would love to produce 20 large pieces and 120 quick sketches.

improve your work environment. help luis record some good
office banter Do you work in a quiet office? Maybe one of these new open concept spaces that are supposed to breed collaboration but achieve the opposite. Do you barely know the person who sits next to you but crave the old days where you knew your coworkers and would share water-cooler talk? If you need a break from the monotony, listen to Office Banter, our new podcast about everything and nothing all at the same time. It’ll help break the tedium of the day while feeling like you work in a friendly office. Also, if you have a fun story, or consider yourself an expert in a specific field, give me a shout and we will get you in the Battery Park studio to banter. quick sketch
My goal is to add a new Sharpie sketch every day with themes like Batman villains, Into the Spiderverse, and Fantastic Four.
